Riley Cooper suspended

This Riley Cooper story has gone from laughable to ludicrous. The 25-year-old Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver was drunk when he used a racial slur at a country music concert. Cooper spazzed out at a black security guard who wouldn’t let him backstage to meet Kenny Chesney. “I’ll fight every nigger in here,” Cooper said.

Normally when a redneck drops the n-word in a room full of rednecks, no one raises an eyebrow. But a concertgoer captured Riley’s tirade on a cell phone and uploaded it to YouTube.

The response from the professional football league was swift. Cooper was fined an undisclosed sum of money, and he was forced to apologize more than once.

But that wasn’t enough. In a tweet posted today, the Eagles front office announced that Cooper will be suspended from “all team activities” so he can “seek counseling.”

An Eagles spokesperson elaborated on the suspension:

“As we have said, Riley Cooper will be seeking counseling and we have excused him from all team activities. This is all new territory and we are going to evaluate this timetable every step of the way. He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates.”

Cooper also released a statement after his suspension. “Right now, I think it’s important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation,” he said.

He added: “During this time I’m going to be speaking with a variety of professionals to help me better understand how I could have done something that was so offensive, and how I can start the healing process for everyone. As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, I’m going to try to make this right.”
