Celebrity Style: Monica Brown

Even though she is a mother of three, R&B Diva Monica Brown makes sure she keeps up with the latest fashions. Last week, Mo’ was spotted hanging out in Atlanta with her bestie Tameka “Tiny” Harris. Monica wore her favorite Clover Canyon top which she matched with black leather pants and royal blue thigh high boots. She completed her classy look with a $3,200 classic Chanel flip bag.

    aRoTh says:

The U.S. Army is catching heat for encroaching on unfamiliar territory: Beauty routines.

On Monday, it released a memo titled Regulation 670-1, which outlined new appearance guidelines for men and women that some say discriminate against female African-American troops. Those updates have quickly spurred some heated backlash, as well as a petition, posted to the White House website, urging for changes to the rules “to allow professional ethnic hairstyles. As of Wednesday had received more than 7,400 signatures. Petitions require 100,000 signatures in order to receive a response from the White House.

The petition, created by an Army sergeant named Jasmine Jacobs of the Georgia National Guard, specifically takes issue with the fact that, under the new rules, hair twists (defined by the Army as “two distinct strands of hair twisted around one another to create a rope-like appearance”) and dreadlocks are not authorized. Multiple braids and cornrows are OK, as long as they’re bigger than a quarter of an inch in diameter, and women with banned hairstyles do have the option of covering them with wigs and hair extensions, but that’s not ideal either.

The idea is that by having neater hairstyles, headgear can fit more easily. Check out a graphic from a Power Point presentation the Army released in mid-March (above) illustrating some banned hairstyles deemed “faddish” and “exaggerated.”

“More than 30% of females serving in the military are of a race other than white. As of 2011, 36 percent of females in the U.S. stated that they are natural, or refrain from chemically processing their hair,” writes Jacobs (who wears her hair in twists) in the petition’s summary. “Females with natural hair take strides to style their natural hair in a professional manner when necessary; however, changes to AR 670-1 offer little to no options for females with natural hair…These new changes are racially biased and the lack of regard for ethnic hair is apparent. This policy needs to be reviewed prior to publishing to allow for neat and maintained natural hairstyles.”

Although on Monday, Army spokesman Paul Prince told the Army Times that deadlocks and twists have been banned since 2005, these new guidelines are much more specific.

“I’ve been in the military six years, I’ve had my hair natural four years, and it’s never been out of regulation. It’s never interfered with my head gear,” Jacobs (who wears her hair in twists) said in the same Army Times article. She added that she’s not sure what to do with her hair now. “Most black women, their hair doesn’t grow straight down, it grows out,” she said. “I’m disappointed to see the Army, rather than inform themselves on how black people wear their hair, they’ve white-washed it all.”

On Monday, the current Sergeant Major of the Army, Raymond F. Chandler III, posted the new guidelines to his Facebook page, which has since prompted more than 200 comments, many of them from female members of the Army, who shared their frustration: “I have twists and now because of this new regulation I am out of reg. I deployed I had them never stopped me from doing my duty and serving my country,” noted Rena Wilkins. Joan Dawson wrote, “When saying a female soldier cannot have an afro is ridiculous. How are you telling a woman that they cannot have their hair the way it grows naturally.”

Other commenters on the page criticize another update to the guidelines: new tattoo restrictions. No petition on that one yet …

They checking the braids up undaneef sew ins down in Fort Bragg, NC our local news said….

Many black female soldiers at Fort Bragg say braids and natural twists are not only stylish, they are lifesavers in the field.

“I just came out of the field Friday, so it was better for me to just pull mine back,” Staff Sgt. Lakashka Moore said. “But if I had it braided, it would have been a whole lot better because I don’t have to comb it. I won’t have to do anything. If we’ve got to go do something, I’m just able to get up and go.”

Spc. Shanell Tillis said the new regulations are forcing her to rethink her next hairstyle.

“I wanted micro-braids, so (I) can’t get those now because of the new regulation,” she said.

The updated grooming policy has some black female soldiers scrambling to come up with ways to wear their hair in regulation, especially when they know they’re going into the field for extended periods.

“A lot of my military clients, because they do PT or because they do a lot of working out, or they’re outside, they wear sew-in,” said hairstylist Denise Granberry of the L3 Salon and Spa. “So, if I can’t braid their hair down, they can’t get the sew-in.”

Now, I do agree that natural hair can look very professional but when you are taking your hat on and off anytime you step outside your fro will look crazy as hell and that is what they have to do. With the traditional styles like micros they go and buy larger hats so the braid fit under the hat but the hat under up looking like a little kid in their dads hat. THAT does not look professional.

From what I remember they can wear it short enough so that it doesn’t touch their collar (but not so short that she looks like a man) or they could wear braids that didn’t extend below the collar (you had to pin them up) or a bun. I dont want to put your business in the street, but you can contribute…You call your hair wolf hair and I honestly laugh because your hair is manageable. Simply put. You could be ready for regs without a second thought. I know it might not “lay in the shade” like you “want” it too without a bit of manipulation, but in all honesty your hair is not the hair that threatens…you could pull it back and be on your way and no one would say “OMG Crazy ass fro”.

You are vocal that you don’t want girly soldiers to protect you, and that its the “Army”, one must follow the rules. Yet you don’t acknowledge that your hair could simply follow these rules where as other hair cannot simply follow the rules. It would take “extra”. Above and beyond the measures other women have to take.

And some woman scolded me for wearing my purse on the wrong arm while in uniform. Military life is not civillian life. There are strict rules and conditioning to prepare military personnel to have the balls to go to war. Sorry I ride for the military and wanted to be a T.I. back when I was in. I can’t take whining. Cuss me out if you will. As you can imagine, I can take it. (hitting submit with trepidation)

No slayage necessary..back when you were in things were different. I’ve been in 13 years total. I didn’t to much care for active duty so I am a reservist. I can figure out something to do or “man up” as you say one weekend a month..No biggie for me. We didn’t like berets, voiced our opinion and guess what..we dont’t wear them. I know there are alot of females that go crazy with hair and I’m sure the spritely old male that wrote the regulation didn’t care that our hair is different. French braids are braiding. If you braid afro hair over and over in the same pattern you are almost guaranteed to have a bout with alopecia. two strand long twists don’t look messy to me and we can’t wear micro braids but oh well…LOL I had a belly button ring when I was active. I got in a car accident with a friend of mine and our SFC came to the accident site and my friend was wiping glass away scared to lift up her shirt. SFC said its ok and lifted up her shirt to show us her belly ring. Alot of senior leaderships equally do not agree with the regulation either but of course they can’t let lower enlisted know that.
