Pregnant Pakistani Woman Stoned to Death By Her Family for Marrying Her Lover

Pregnant Pakistani Woman Stoned to Death

A 25-year-old pregnant Pakistani woman was stoned to death by her father and other relatives for marrying a man without their consent.

Farzana Parveen and her husband Mohammad Iqbal, 45, were attacked at the court house in downtown Lahore on Tuesday. Her father, Mohammad Azeem, had filed an abduction case against Iqbal, which the couple was contesting, said her lawyer, Mustafa Kharal. He said she was three months pregnant.

The couple was attacked by her father, brothers and about 20 male relatives as they exited the high court of Lahore. Azeem yanked Parveen by her arm to talk to her, but she resisted.

The relatives began beating Parveen to death as bystanders looked on. The attackers hit her with sticks, rocks and bricks from a nearby construction site.

Iqbal, who wasn’t the source of their rage, escaped serious injury. He said he started seeing Parveen after the death of his wife, with whom he had five children.

Arranged marriages are customary among conservative Pakistanis who don’t believe in marrying for love. The bride’s parents expect a dowry (usually cash or property) to be paid by the groom for their daughter’s hand in marriage.

“We were in love,” Iqbal told The Associated Press. He alleged that the woman’s family wanted to fleece money from him before marrying her off.

“I simply took her to court and registered a marriage,” infuriating the family, he said.

Police investigator Rana Mujahid said police were working to apprehend all those who participated in this “heinous crime.”

Parveen’s father surrendered to police but the others fled after the attack. Azeem called his daughter’s death an “honor killing.”

“I killed my daughter as she had insulted all of our family by marrying a man without our consent, and I have no regret over it,” the father told Mujahid.

“Pakistani law allows a victim’s family to forgive their killer,” said Wasim Wagha of the Aurat Foundation. “But in honor killings, most of the time the women’s killers are her family. The law allows them to nominate someone to do the murder, then forgive him.”

Being stoned to death though? That is an awful way to die I would assume that’s a lot of stones and being hit repeatedly like that?? Just horrible and to call it a honor killing? I don’t know much about their culture but I’m going to have to disagree with their methods… As I’m sure they disagree with the idea of westerners marrying for “love”

I read that it was over marrying outside of her religion which is forbidden. Its no secret how serious Pakistani’s are about family honor and religion, once a part of India it split because of religios conflict. My daughter has a classmate whose black mother was murdered in Atlanta because of family shame when she married an Indian. Family shame is not being able to live in certain places, go certain places or schools. You become a ****roach and have to die to be redeemed. My question is, she knew the law and consequences, why did she do it?

    Good morning everyone

I agree with mistaken LHHATL and this situation is not the same thing at all. I am not sure who people are questioning why she married this man if she knew she was going to die because we all have our own thoughts on who to marry over here and even people in other cultures have the same thoughts. We all do things that are against norm but we do it anyway because we want to and just because you are in a culture that has stiffer rules doesn’t block you from your own thoughts of how it should be. I wonder how many would have still gotten married here if you knew the possible consequences of that is death?

  38. 38

@Spicey :cosign: We all know that people fought against things that were wrong to them but the mainstream and people in positions of power thought were wrong. If we all accepted what someone told us as right without educating and researching for ourselves we would be even more lost than we are now. Just because your parents are a certain faith or religion does not mean that you have to be as an adult. I decided to still serve and love the Lord as an adult of my own volition NOT because my mom told me to. I know plenty of people raised in the church who now are Muslim, Buddhist, non denominational, etc. They did what works best for them and their soul. So should they be stoned to death because they changed and married someone of another faith or without permission? Let me answer that for you. NO.

No but the secks tapes, scantily clad women, glorifying on break babies, drunkenness, physical violence (I laughed my head off when The Bam punched that girl) are real. And what’s worse to me is that people are debasing themselves, their children, and their VOWS for fakery for entertainment. Selling their values for some screen time. It’s it the SAME, of course not because a life was lost. I don’t respect the values of these me but they take them seriously.

We don’t value human life and dignity here either. It’s still throwing stones in our glass house.

    spiceykay says:

Black men used to be hung for sleeping with a white woman and yet still they still did it anyway. Just because society at that time didn’t accept it and also some of them screamed rape but that’s a different story. I’m just saying some people can’t help who they love, like or lust over and long as they are of age and consensual it shouldn’t matter about race or religion. To die by the hands of your own family in this manner is something I will never fully understand.

Understood. But guess what. You can turn off the tv. You don’t have to watch it. This woman could not escape the stoning. She was born into that life. She had no choice. When she exercise her right to have a choice over her life and body she was killed.
I get the points. REALLY I do. I just do not think they are fair to use in the same analogy. One you have an option another you do not. And also since when is it not ok to point out a wrong just because you also might have done wrong? I get it we are speaking as a whole and since I am an American I live in a glass house and shouldn’t pointing out injustice because that can make me a hypocrite. At the end of the day I am still going to go to church, be married, have kids, watch LHHATL  , read a book, make sure my kids get a good education, drink on the weekends, go to work and not stone my kids if they decide to marry someone I do not like :shrugs: I will be a :hater: all day I guess. I am ok with that. God bless AMURICA (Chris Rock voice)

  46. 46

@MissyJ: I am so sorry  that we have forced you into the gutter with us :hahaha: No I get it. LHHATL is not something to aspire to be. PERIOD. I do not let me kids watch it at all. But when we were growing up there were plenty of songs, tv shows and movies our parents didn’t let us watch either. Now as a grown-up we know why. Over the break I was at a family member’s house and were playing around and put on some of that blue light in the basement music. Them heffas was nasty  and fast. That is why we as parents need to educate our kids on values and what matters. You can blame tv/outside forces all day but 7/10 the household and environment you create matters more. I originally typed 9/10 but then I realized that kids these days ain’t body ish
