Floyd Mayweather

Over the weekend, one of my loyal readers emailed me audio of Power 105's The Breakfast Club poking fun at boxer Floyd Mayweather's alleged illiteracy. It wasn't easy ignoring the trending topic of 50 Cent's ignorant public humiliation of Mayweather on social media platform Twitter.com. But I managed to ignore it -- until I received emails from loyal readers who gave me a different perspective on the ignorance.

For instance, did you know that nearly half of all black people can't read? The irony is that half of the people who laughed at Mayweather can't read above a 4th grade level themselves.

Mary J Blige

Here are a few more facts that aren't a laughing matter:

1. Over 70% of America’s inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level.

2. 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read.

3. Nearly 85% of the juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate

I don't have to tell you that the majority of these statistics involve black people.

So when we laugh at Floyd Mayweather (or Mary J Blige), we are laughing at ourselves.

Good Afternoon Sandra,

I am a hit/miss reader of your blog, but have always appreciated the effort you put into it. Anyway, I don't know why.... But the Charlamagne/50 Cent vs. Floyd thing has been on my mind all weekend. I see that you haven't posted the dialog from Friday's Breakfast Show on your site, but the comments have been rampant on social media. A LOT of people think it's funny, but I don't in the least! Here's my problem... Why are we the only race that will volley up our "so called" success stories for the sake of a laugh??? When in actuality, when you (the black community readers) finish your HeHeHes & HaHaHas, the noise you hear in the background is THEM laughing at you!

I will be the first to say that Floyd is a clown! But to place his illiteracy on display for the sake of a few laughs is shameful. What's even worse is Floyd's so called response! Yes, everyone knows that Floyd has money!! My hope is one day he will learn that money does not make you successful. It illustrates what you have accomplished, but TRUE SUCCESS in life is measured by the life's you've changed!

I really want to see on Monday (after the BF Club has had time to reflect) if they will issue some sort of apology for their role in the matter. They probably won't, but you can't preach "Do Better" and when it's your time, not Do Better! Just thought I'd share my thoughts as I'm anxious to read (no pun intended) what your readers have to say!

~B Well

Loyal reader Omar Slim White writes:

It baffles me that our people would chastise another brother in public because you may feel his reading skills aren't the best.
"We're trying to demoralize a black man in a country where it was prohibited and illegal for us to READ/WRITE; and a country where, if a BlacK man was caught trying to read or write, would receive from 40 lashes up to 100 in the deep south. If a slave tried to write for another slave he received 200 lashes on his back for the 1st offense and 700 lashes for the 2nd offense. If a slave owner taught his slave the basics of reading and writing, he was fined $250-500 which is valued at $7500-$15,000 today. The same illegality of education we had to undergo back then is still reflected today w/all these poor schools, careless teachers, insufficient supplies. This is a systematic agenda just like it was back then because masters feared smart slaves communicating and reaching revolts w/ other slaves. We should be ashamed of ourselves for even trying to disparage Floyd for something like this especially when just 60 years ago James Hood was met with guards with a shotgun when he tried to enter the UNIV of Alabama, where Brown v. Board of Education left black communities with 1 teacher attempting 2 teach 60 students with 3 to 4 students having to share books; and where just 2 years ago the students of Frederick Douglass Academy in Detroit protested for better education and they got suspended for it. Wisen up my people. We must uplift our brothers and sisters, not mimick our oppressors and belittle them.

Floyd didnt have a problem humiliating his ex-gf on an internatational platform...but i'm supposed to spare him the embarrassment of not being to READ?!?!? i think not. He's an idiot and proved it even more when he lflashed those checks. That money can be taken from him at ANY point. I blame some of this on parents. In the 4th grade, your kid should still be required to read out loud to you and you as a parent should be checking homework. How in hell does someone's child get to the freaking 6th grade and can't read?! And if the parent can't read, and has school age kids, y'all should be learning together. My grand pop did not go to school beyond the third grade in Jamaica, but can read his ass off. His momma taught him at home. It can be done. But mind you these kids and parents can be on IG and play madden and be on fb like life depended on it. A hot mess.

I don't sympathize with Lloyd for being illiterate because that is a choice at this point. There is no reason for him not to have improved his reading skills so many years after becoming wealthy. But I will say this, anyone that thinks of themselves as a friend of 50 is a fool. This is the second time that he has publicly humiliated a former friend with inside information that they made the mistake of sharing with him. If he has any high profile friends remaining they better be very careful what they say around him.

But sympothizing with an abusive womanizer because he can't read is not something I can pull off.

Here's my thing. There are those who grow up not knowing how to read, because their parents lacked the brain power to even care. But once you reach adulthood, there are MANY programs that are available and free to help those who are struggling. If you chose not to do better for self, then that's on you. as far as Floyd is concerned he has money which gives him a better advantage than most. he can get a at home tutor, if he is ashamed. he can take many different avenues to correct his literacy but chooses not to. The babies are the ones I feel for the most, because if you have no one pushing you or trying to help, when you cannot help yourself. Then you will fall behind, and that's just sad. I push my baby as much as possible and she HATES to read. Sorry but there is no excuse for Floyd, Mary or whoever else that is a big grown adult

If our uncles asked us about our GRADES as much as they pull our 13 year old a$$es to the side and ask if we've had any p*ssy yet, life would be better for black folk as a whole because the standard for the most a$$ would not be that which we measure our manhood. Hence, Floyd's $2 million dollar purse closet for potential hoze is evident in his inability to get right with himself.

On the flip side - there is a secondary video I've seen of Floyd flawlessly reading a teleprompter repeateadly.

Lastly, there are many people who read VERY well, but simply don't have the ability to read out loud without the words jumping on top of one another and sounding like a bumbling fool.

  • OutsidetheBox

I don't think Floyd has a literacy issue..like tutor me and I will be better. Yes, I'm sure one COULD tutor him and he would maybe improve but I think its an actual learning disability.

Not just "that nigga cant read.." cause he didn't practice enough..or whatever. #armchairdiagnosis

Here’s my thing. There are those who grow up not knowing how to read, because their parents lacked the brain power to even care. But once you reach adulthood, there are MANY programs that are available and free to help those who are struggling. If you chose not to do better for self, then that’s on you. as far as Floyd is concerned he has money which gives him a better advantage than most. he can get a at home tutor, if he is ashamed. he can take many different avenues to correct his literacy but chooses not to. The babies are the ones I feel for the most, because if you have no one pushing you or trying to help, when you cannot help yourself. Then you will fall behind, and that’s just sad. I push my baby as much as possible and she HATES to read. Sorry but there is no excuse for Floyd, Mary or whoever else that is a big grown adult

Slim :pc: Floyd ain’t never had a lash nor been a slave other than mentally. So miss me with that he can’t read cause we were slaves. If that’s the case then how can I --- along with most of my family ….all from humble beginning read? I would say don’t worry I’ll wait but I want to finish this post today.
We can read and have an education because we CHOSE TO DO BETTER AND NOT MAKE EXCUSES. You can’t keep pointing the finger at everybody else for your situation and not strive to do better yourself. Floyd has had PLENTY of opportunities with his MILLIONS to do better and learn how to read. While I do not celebrate 50s antics I do not excuse Floyd’s response of $72 mill makes it all right. If Floyd doesn’t care about trying to buy a Teach Your Baby Can Read DVD for himself and he has the means miss me while I won’t shed a tear for him. I got REAL kids at home that can read and are about to start reading. I will make sure I TAKE CARE OF THEM. THEY ARE MY WE. And anyone one else I continue to mentor, love and tutor. :tea: I can’t save the world. I can only do my part for those I am responsible for and in my community. I can only help those who want to be helped. Save Floyd???? FOH. Respectfully.

Where the sidewalk ends omg that was one of my favorite poem books growning up jenie. I used to love the one about the man with all the hats.

My daughter hates to read because she has issues with her cognitive learning. So although she can read fluently, she's still not where she's supposed to be. Once I really took a step back and realized there was an issue with her, I got her evaluated, so now she is getting extra help at school. And I had to scale back on the types of books that I brought her. So that she can enjoy reading much better than she did before. She's picking up a little, but it's definitely a process..

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Seven people were charged Wednesday with trespassing at former Miami Heat player Ray Allen's home while his wife and four young children were asleep upstairs.

Police say 18- and 19-year-olds were attending a party next door when they entered throughout the front door of the unlocked Coral Gables home last week. Shannon Allen said she woke up and heard male voices with large flashlights loudly discussing their personal property. The terrified mother screamed, the intruders ran and she called police, according to a statement from the couple.

The group told police they thought the Allens had moved and wanted to see how a professional basketball player lives. Police initially released the teens because there was no forced entry, no intent and nothing was taken. At the time, the Allens' attorney said the couple was upset that charges weren't filed because a crime had been committed that left the family feeling scared and vulnerable.

Shannon Allen gave sworn testimony to the state prosecutors to support the filing of charges, her attorney Gregory Victor said. The couple could have declined to press charges.

He said the Allens did not have a position on what specific charges should be filed, saying that decision was left to state prosecutors. If convicted, the seven could each face up to a year in prison for the first-degree misdemeanor trespassing charge. Victor said none lived in the Allens' neighborhood and the couple did not know them.

"Nobody's upset with the police and we're satisfied that charges have been filed and there will be consequences for the actions," Victor said.

It’s not her fault :shrugs: Even if he isn’t there my husband calls and even facetimes with her to go over things. I understand Floyd did not have the same type of parent. That is terrible. But it is not an excuse today at his tender age of almost 40. That to me is like me saying I should be a stripper or whorish my father wasn’t there. That’s the excuse some people give. Uh no… That was an obstacle that I learned from and move forward from. At some point it falls on you to be the agent of change you want to see. A lot of African woman are like this. When I used to work at Harlem hospital many of them could not read, nor write English. They would have their kids with them to fill out forms (which was unacceptable) or their nasty arse husbands. And if no one was their with them, we had to get an interpreter to help them. Just sad as hell.

its true but one thing I can say about the african population in harlem is that they make sure their kids get the resources. the parents may have missed out but them kids be on it! cant barely get a spot at a charter school because the africans have that lottery on lockdown. momma may be braiding hair on 116th but baby Fatou is about to be an engineer, honey! :champ:

Oh this is VERY true. Anytime me and DTTS go out to eat I ALWAYS have them bring her a picture menu. She read just fine until she has to read on the spot or in public.
Waiter: What would you like to eat ma’am?
DTTS: EYE EYE Would like pppppppp pp ppppp
    Waiter: Pardon?

They are BIG on education for their children, and they push for college. Even the ones that struggle at first get their life together, but that's because they want to do better! They say that back home education is not free, but over here it's so much easier but we do not take advantage of the opportunities we have.

I will be one of the ones to say yes I laugh because someone needs to show these kids that just cause you have money dont mean that people respect you. Parents need to ensure that the quality of your child's education is given the same importance if not more than their extra-curricular activities. Yes Floyd didnt have the type of parents to care but how about self pride, how about stepping about from your ignorance and doing something to better yourself, not because it will make you more money but because it will make you a better individual. Floyd is a perfect example as to why these athletes go broke when their career is over - they dont focus on making themselves all-round individuals. In order to success at something you should know it inside out, just not the craft but also the business of it. Too many of these athletes are not literate or do not want to take the time to educate themselves so they rely on Mr Goldstein who invest their money the way he wants because he's making 30% upfront from every venture and at the end of the day when he's run off laughing, these poor fools are stuck with very little to show for their hard work and sacrifice

I REALLY FEEL that most of the problems in our Community is due to illiteracy and functional literacy UP in our ranks!
(No one wants anyone to find out that he or she can't read as it carries a stigma. So what she or he does is overcompensate for this void [at times] by acting out!)

In the case of This Boxer, no one should have put him on BLAST like that . . . and in addition I understand that The Boxer is not illiterate but that he suffers from a severe stuttering problem.

That rapper shall get his due . . . in due time!

For the first poster: It's "lives you've changed" not "life's".

For the second poster: It's specifically because Black Americans have a history of illiteracy that I find this whole "Spare Floyd" issue to be repugnant. It speaks to how skewed our priorities are that the man has millions of dollars but didn't spend enough on it to educate himself.

Typically I'd completely feel for the underdog, but we have a whole bunch of "ig'nant", ratchet-loving, overly materialistic folks out here who need to see that being stupid is NOT cool. Even if you have to read those hood romances, read SOMETHING. Learn something other than how to stay broke and ignorant.

Riches will buy you many, many, many things, but it won't buy you intellect, class, a good personality, or spiritual fulfillment.

  • pointhimout

nope i didn't laugh at the recording either. im embarrassed about not being good in math, so i'm less likely to laugh at anyone else's educational flaws. i'm horrible in math, i mean horrible. clearly, i can do basic math, algebra, but beyond that, i'm like schit, my kids will need tutors.

u know when it's a celebrity, when have to find something wrong with you and use that to tear you down as best we can.

  • Afro Goddess

VDOT, maybe if you could write English better than your average African I'd be willing to consider your opinion. Until then, you and Floyd need to hold hands and swing your ignorant @sses around a mulberry bush.

We black people laugh at everything that is wrong about us. I don't feel a bit sorry for Floyd He should use some of those millions to educate himself instead of throwing it away in strip clubs

  • Stephen Hale

I guess it's time to get your sh*t together, my brethren. One cannot continue to blame the previous generation for the faults of the current. Learn to read and write, do math (even Jethro could do his ciphers). It's time that all black men and women take the bull by the horns and demand that their children learn to read and write and become productive citizens of these United States instead of whining and crying about how they are tread upon by the white establishment. Get it together my brothers and sisters. Your time has come and no one can stop the continuum of stupidity and helplessness save you.
