Aging singer/songwriter Elton John is calling for a worldwide boycott of openly gay clothing designers Dolce and Gabbana. The openly gay father-of-two who is "married" to his longtime partner, David Furnish, was incensed when he heard about Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce's definition of a traditional family.
Dolce and Gabbana promoted traditional families and criticized gay adoptions via surrogate mothers and what they called "synthetic children" grown in laboratory test tubes.
"We oppose gay adoptions," said Dolce and Gabbana. "The only family is the traditional one."
Elton and Furnish have two children who were born via surrogate mothers. Neither child has ever known their biological mothers.
Dolce and Gabbana, who once considered using a surrogate themselves, said children should never be deprived of a mother.
"You are born to a mother and a father - or at least that's how it should be," Dolce said in the interview. "I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalogue."
"How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children." He signed off with: "#BoycottDolceGabbana"
Dolce and Gabbana seemed to walk back their comments in a statement on Sunday, saying their opinions on traditional marriage and families "weren’t intended to judge the choices made by others."
Dolce said “it was never our intention to judge other people’s choices. We do believe in freedom and love.”
But on Monday, Gabbana called for a boycott of Elton on his Instagram page.
In a post Monday Gabbana shouted "Fascist!" and took direct aim at the singer: "#boycotteltonjohn". On his Instagram account, as you might expect, there was quite a lot of support for his criticism of Elton John among the hundreds of comments. Polina Yaguzhinskaya says: "We live in a free world and if Stefano wants [to] express his personal opinion it's his right. So just mind your own business." Source
