Hip hop mogul Jay Z was all smiles in NYC yesterday, despite the dismal failure of his recently launched TIDAL app. In a scathing article published on Bloomberg.com, writer Devin Leonard raked Jay Z over the coals. It was a hit piece that described the downfall of a businessman once considered so influential that he counted billionaire Warren Buffet among his friends. “They totally blew it by bringing out a bunch of millionaires and billionaires … and then having them all complain about not being paid,” said Ben Gibbard, of the rock group Death Cab for Cutie.
Jay Z's only hope to save TIDAL from financial ruin was a partnership with Sprint. But in a carefully worded statement, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure said Sprint and its parent company Softbank were not making an investment in Tidal and that any talks Jay Z had with Claure were purely platonic. “It is NOT a financial investment or exclusive partnership,” said Claure.
But most damaging of all is the fact that Jay Z has no distribution deal with Sony Records, meaning his wife Beyonce's music may soon be pulled from TIDAL. That would be a crushing blow to Jay Z's business, man.
