Entertainment Weekly

The media continues its fascination with transsexual men. Laverne Cox covers Entertainment Weekly dressed as the Statue of Liberty, which symbolizes hope and freedom for many immigrants.

The heavily Photoshopped cover was photographed by Alexei Hay, who captured the bleached Orange Is the New Black cast member wearing a green gown that exposed his breast implants.

In her thought-provoking article for the NY Times, writer Elinor Burkett examined the sexist male privilege behind the media’s obsession with transsexuals.

“The ‘I was born in the wrong body’ rhetoric favored by other trans people doesn’t work any better and is just as offensive, reducing us to our collective breasts and vaginas,” Burkett wrote.

“That’s the kind of nonsense that was used to repress women for centuries. But the desire to support people like Ms. Jenner and their journey toward their truest selves has strangely and unwittingly brought it back.”
