I had to create a login just to say how disgusted I am at the lack of respect for our lives, children, education, self esteem, justice, financial stability, physical security, etc, etc, etc is shown. Fields put the student in a chokehold, flipped her chair over, dragged her caveman style, then bodily hurled the girl against a wall before placing her in handcuffs………

Most times when kids are defiant it is because they themselves feel disrespected or unheard. Talking to her like a human being most likely would have deescalated this whole situation. She is not some wild beast. More likely if someone outside of the teacher had stepped in and said lets talk about whats going on and whats bothering you should would have responded in a much more positive manner.

I’ve set in the junior high and high school classroom with my son because I couldn’t believe the stories he came home with. Disobedience is something that teachers complain about tremendously. They are at a loss to the point where they are turning their licenses in and entering other fields because parents do not understand what they endure on a daily basis. My question was never violence is the answer. My question is how do you control students who are disruptive to the point where talking does not work? But thank you because you offered a suggestion.

I started typing a response about all the appropriate ways to deal with these kids but thats a waste. This is not about that little girl. This about a grown man acting like a thug. I’m a black mother of a black male and I understand what the world offers him because of his complexion. However, I raised him to be obedient and to not defy authority. One of the issues we see in this story is not only was she treated roughly, but the girl simply disobeyed the teacher to the point where the principal wasn’t called, but authority. Talking to her did not work.

He treated her like she was a convicted inmate at Rikers with a shank try to stab somebody. He absolutely used excessive force…. He should have received the training on HOW. I was trained on non-violent ways to diffuse situations with adults who were drug offenders. Nothing she was going exhibited violence . She may have been disruptive and still mouthing off but his training was either non existent or he didn’t use what he learned. She could have sustained a head injury…

I keep reading students tweets saying that this is common to this officer, it’s just the first time he was caught on video. Also saw one student tweet that the rest of them were in shock watching it and scared that they were next because he put another girl in handcuffs for standing up. And this dude does powerlifting as a hobby! He is too damn strong to be slamming a grown man, let along a teenage girl.

The kids being whipped and abused are the ones “killing us at gas stations or breaking into stores with bricks to steal computers or home invasion.” Just check the stats on inmates who were physically abused as children. When you teach a child that using violence is the way to get what you want, don’t be alarmed when that child does what you taught him to do.

People don’t know the aggressiveness of the inner city students in South Carolina. Teachers are in fear and for real reasons. These days when students do commit violence in school you cant be too careful. This is a bold student to disregard the teacher’s and the officer’s orders. Also it could be a set up where she hoped to provoke an assault for profit from a lawsuit. Racism and black lives matter are big business.

Did it ever occur to you that this student didn’t want to be there.Many children are forced to attend these Education Containment Centres against there wish , that in itself is abuse.With advance technology students shouldn’t be held in these institutions for so long.Many students are now self taught.What they do lack is social care due to Corporate promotion of Gangsta Rap, Reality TV programming.Beyonces Nicky minaj a trois, miles , gaga. Kids are unruly and they have attitudes. They do not always listen. I don’t have kids and I know this. If you cannot handle this without excessive violence then you do not need to be a police officer. If your only option to remove someone who is committing a nonviolent crime and is unarmed is to drag them out by their legs after choke holding them, you have selected the wrong career. Violence should always be a last resort.

In the cop’s defense, he had no way of knowing if she was armed with a weapon. I’d imagine the recent rash of school shootings has most resource officers on edge.

When a subject ignores a police order and is non-compliant, an aggressive takedown is usually the next step.

I am sorry for my blunt candor, but this is the dumbest correlation I have ever heard. You are trying to paint behavior as this linear entity where good students only exhibit one type and bad students the other, which is erroneous.

Students are people. People exhibit good and bad behaviors because humans are complex. This does not mean that one person is all bad or vice versa. Also, going into the hallways to view them on their off time doesn’t tell much about how they behave in the classroom. That’s like telling me to go into your home when you are no longer working and observing you with your family or your friends. Perhaps cursing, perhaps making asinine comments, perhaps watching suspect tv shows that don’t align with my narrow subjective views of something “intelligent” people watch, and then making biased judgments based on these small details.

Maybe instead of raising a fist, we can ask questions. We can ask why. Send them to the guidance counselor, earn their trust. There are other avenues than physically harming the student and then possibly not only harming them but causing yourself to get sued.

Where did they ask her to turn the cell phone off? Didn’t see that in the video. Either way, SO WHAT. When I was twelve, I was quiet and kept to myself. Didn’t start any trouble, but I always had a Discman (heyyy throwback) and my headphones on even though they were against school policy. And when the teacher asked to take it from me, I said no. It’s my property and I wasn’t disrupting the class as it was on low. (I would have, however, turned it off and put it away but the teacher did not give this as an option to me either.) I still wouldn’t expect to be bodyslammed because I didn’t want to give up my belongings. That’s more disruptive to the class – taking the time out to address someone who is not interrupting you, not making any noise, and chooses to check out of the class.

The issue is not what the student was doing when said student was nonviolent. Disruptive kids are a freaking given when you are a teacher. Hell, I also have taught adults. Adults who are PAYING to take the class and guess what? They are also disruptive. When they are disruptive and non-compliant (I’ve taught a director of a financial corporation who was always on his cell phone and disruptive to the class even though I’d asked him multiple times to turn his cell off or please leave), I DO NOT GET AN OFFICER TO BODY SLAM THEM.

There were plenty of alternatives. Ask questions. Wait until the class is over to address them. Take a break. As a teacher, it is your job to teach the material but you can’t expect good retention if you are not engaging your students. As a teacher, you should hope to reach every student, and if you are not, perhaps you need to ask ‘What am I doing that my students look bored,’ than punish every student who looks disinterested or is disruptive in a nonviolent manner.

I debated on this topic via IG until after midnight (like a dummy)…the officer’s actions were brutal and unwarranted. This was a young girl who had not committed a crime and was not under arrest. The fact that he, a grown man, could not handle a situation without restraint is disturbing at best, and unjustified.

Race is not the main factor in this. If the young girl was white and the officer white, I would still have an issue with his actions. If the officer was black and the young girl black, I would still have an issue with his actions.

When I worked with the state with “At Risk” youth, they taught us non invasion moves. its works.

We need to have full authority to parent our children at HOME. The

children BEFORE they go out into the world. I am currently raising a 15 teenager (my sister child who passed away) who regularly acts a fool. My concern with disciplining him is will he call the damn cops? When a parent is concerned with consequences of disciplining a child, We have a problem. Do I agree with the actions
of the officer not at all. I do however believe that if this child
FEARED the consequences of her actions at home. The teacher would never
had gotten to the point of requiring assistant to have the child
removed. when I was in school if you got out of line they would break
out the wooden Paddle and pop your behind in FRONT of the class there

While I do believe we have a definite problem with police brutality against citizens in America, I don’t believe there is much to see here. The police officer didn’t decide to come to the classroom by way of telepathy. She was obviously being disrespectful to the point where the teacher had to call for security. Even in the video I saw, he told her to get up and walk out. These folks are at school now, not at the mall… What would have been the alternative other than having her removed.

One thing I don’t tolerate is some disrespectful azz kids. They no longer have respect for their elders. Had that been me getting body slammed in the video, I would have still caught a two piece from my mama as soon as I walked through the door.

These kids think they are entitled to do whatever and say whatever and have no respect for authority. Oh I agree. I have teenagers and I tell them all the time there is no way I could be a high school teacher. I would be on World Star myself. But I cannot condone what is in that video because of what I know kids- acting ignorant- do. There are multiple layers going on. Parents not parenting. Kids raising themselves and feeling grown. Everything being posted online so folks want to put on a show. People looking for a 1 line solution. Societal injustice making people feel like it’s every man for himself. School administrators not supporting teachers who want student removed because it messes with student/classroom attendance and therefore funding. Lawsuits being brought on. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who won’t show for graduation or homework help but will come to the school DEEP to kick a teacher’s arse. The list goes on. Everything above and so much more needs to be addressed for things to change permanently.
But as adults operating in a broken system and choosing to work with kids..we have to rise above the temptation to lay hands. We can’t preach “behave yourself regardless of anger, antagonization, etc. use your words not your hands” and then do this here. I really believe if each person chose regularly to rise above a difference could be made and felt.

This is the same justification that was used for Sandra Bland ending up dead in a jail cell. She didn’t listen. She didn’t comply. Sad to say, ANY movement or what someone who sees themself as judge, jury, and executioner can land you not only in the back of a cruiser, but in the back of a hearst.

The administrator and the teacher failed this child that day. They failed her. Period.

Very sad. As a PARENT. I know my child. So the few times I have been called by the teacher, I knew she was being completely honest with me because I KNOW MY SON. I thanked her, offered my assistance, reinforced my support and dealt with him accordingly. Now, had this happened to my son, I would have dealt with ALL parties accordingly.

My parents did a great job raising me. I graduated with honors, was a first generation college student on both sides of the family, held a job since I was 15, etc. Have I ever popped off at the mouth in school. Best believe. However, my parents were called and I was disciplined at home. What this man did was WRONG. PERIOD.

There are rules to living no matter where you go. They apply to all. But if a person of authority asks you to comply with a rule of a place, comply. His level of aggressiveness was unnecessary, but so was her refusal to follow instructions.

But since you want to mention Walter Scott let’s look at the facts:
Driving and unregistered car he was supposedly going to buy (no harm no foul)
Pulled over for a turn signal
Jumps out of the car and runs (seems suspect)
Wrestles with cop when caught and ALLEGEDLY takes the taser after being tased (sounds a little shady)
Court documents reveal that Scott was under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time of the incident

He WAS ON DRUGS, DRIVING A CAR ILLEGALLY, RAN, FOUGHT.

Should he have lost his life? NO. Did he PUT himself in a bad predicament? Absolutely

I still wonder if the parents or legal guardians knew this was going down and also given the chance to get there before these extreme (uneccessary) measures. I would hope if she is being completely quiet and not speaking, a counselor would come (or on-site psychologist even and try to stabilize the situation…we had one at our campus growing up) to dig deeper. Sometimes kids are struggling with intangible issues. NOT saying that is the case but sometimes when a child acts out of character, there are usually signs leading up to shutdown behavior.

Not to mention that Sleepy claimed he had been in love with Mama Butter for over 20 years. He was just waiting on a valid reason to call her. I got into it with a girl at school one day, and I told her that when I saw her in the streets, I was going to fugg her up. He thought by threatening to call Mama Butter would calm me down. You are asking for something that on the surface appears to be simple, but, in reality its not that simple. There was clearly an issue that started with the instructor. The administrator, should have simply asked the student to hallway or office to discuss the issue and resolve it with discipline or return the student to the classroom. We don’t know what happened that caused this situation to spiral so far out of control. Regardless of what I would do, there are other means and methods to deal with non-complaint kids other violence especially in a classroom environment. What does that teach exactly?

Zeta when I woke up I found emails and comments that I and police said its harassment. A report was made on the individual. In order to file online report my local police has to make their report first. I never knew it would get to this level but it did. I told officer if anything happen to me then they know who this person is.
I notice the person tried to erase the comments but I had them still in my emails. That lets me know they knew it was wrong to make such comments. But I forward everything to the police.

I am online filing a report to the FBI on their comments and email.
I don’t want to miss up anyone’s future but there is a way you can talk to people without intimidation and harassment.

Sure wish Rev Jackson et. al .were as quick to express “outrage” when black children are not merely “roughed up” but KILLED by BLACK males rather than white officers.. In Cleveland in one month alone, three babies, 5 years old, 3 years old and FIVE MONTHS OLD were shot dead by young black men. Not a peep from a single black “leader”, though this is happening across the country. There is a culture of violence and anarchy among black youth — a culture that says “bucking the system” is funny, shooting into crowds and murdering babies is funny. On a smaller scale, it is the same anarchic attitude displayed by this young woman who feels that she too is above the rules, above the “law” and may do whatever she wants. What is wrong with teaching your children that SOCIETIES HAVE RULES and “responsible” members of society must follow those rules. But black people ALWAYS have to act as if they don’t have a single functioning brain cell in their heads and cannot VERBALIZE their complaints. I was suppose to come out of one class for a test for 2 points. You know I had the SCHOOL BOARD to pull each and every test of every student of all AP History classes. It didn’t end well…for that teacher. I made sure to sit in front so that I could see them eye to eye EVERY day!

This officer hated the students. This officer was the total opposite of my daughters officer when she was in school. Everybody loved that officer, and his dog. ( including me.) What a shame. He had the ability to help young people, and didn’t.

The FBI has taken the case…. I hope he burns for all of it.

I went to a white school. We had security. It was in the suburbs of a well to do area. We even had to have the SWAT team come because the white kids were threatening to pull the fire alarm and shoot everyone who walked out. Also this white kid I went to school with was arrested for running a meth lab out of an apartment. I’m not refuting the idea that minority schools are wrought with violence and such, it’s just it’s more overt. There were plenty of fights and violence at the white schools they are just painted differently.

The world is becoming more & more desensitized…look how the kid in the seat next to her, never even moved from the position he’s in…smh! U can tell he’s already become desensitized to violence…

I challenge you to go volunteer at a school for a few months and you too will get an up close and personal view of the fuggery that ensues not so behind the scenes with the staff at these schools. These shenanigans include drunk teachers, high teachers, teachers sexing kids, the principles sexing teachers, stealing from the districts and so on. Don’t think for one minute that kids don’t know this stuff because they definitely do. It’s not what you say to a child but how you say it. I personally would’ve left her.Then at the end of the lesson ,rather than embarrassing the student.ask if she’s OK then enquire if things are alright at home. If she’s having an off day.I would remain calm. .Once I’ve gained her trust explain in a calm voice your not allowed your phone in class or headphones. Sometimes kids will make a compromise.They will say if I have my headphones on but complete the school work would that be ok.I then would seat student at the back of the class to avoid distracting others.Many times students have been abused or emotional. This method calms them.If you know your student and they storm out the class let them.Make sure they have a safe place to go.If they feel they are going to have an outburst find a quiet place where they can work in peace.There isons of solutions.The amount of times I’ve rescued fellow teachers from getting a azz whoop because of their approach to our kids. I’ve worked with kids for twenty years I would never dream of treating a student this way ,unless I’m out of Control.If at times I feel frustrated remove myself from the situation. The student was being disobedient .. I agree with that but at the same time the officer was using excessive force that was not appropriate to handle the situation. I am appalled to see such behavior by adults towards children.. That was more disruptive to the learning process than the girl who didn’t put her cell phone away. Also I think that it should have been a female officer who dismissed the student not the over aggressive male officer who treated this child like she was holding the class room hostage..

Thanks for telling your side. Nope at my school it was usually just bomb threats. We locked down the school a few times a year. But yes, you’re right who knows they may have covered up a lot. That is what they like to do…But I know for damn sure we didn’t have permanent security at the school and I never saw drugs, guns, or violence in any of my classes. Ask another cop on campus to pick her up out of the chair and remove her from the classroom. If she would resist, take her in the chair from the classroom. However, this would possible risk injury to her and myself as well, in addition to the other students because what if she tried to get out of the chair while we are moving her. What we saw in the video wasn’t an officer trying to remove her, but send a message to her that this is the consequence for disobedience to adults and authority. Very unfortunate nonetheless.

The drugs I noticed were prescription drugs passed around at school. Taken at parties usually or during school events such as dances, sporting events/trips, and field trips. I think sometimes – with the minorities – some of their issues are blown up a bit too. It’s rarely the majority of the school that is acting a fool, and usually just a select few. I agree though, the reasons are likely from an unstable home life. And for this reason, you may have to go the extra mile to get your point across with them versus answering every issue with a fist. None of her disruption were verbal or physical, it was not paying attention by being on her cellphone. There is no justification for his reaction. The second student arrested was arrested for protesting the young girl’s treatment and being manhandled. I know teens can be vulgar, disrespectful, rude, bad, or all types of attitude but guess what it’s not a crime. She’s not a criminal, we are allowing our children to be treated differently because they have an attitude. She’s culpable for her actions but at end of day it was not criminal and his response to her was not called for at ALL. You need a special training to work with children, especially teens, he obviously don’t have it and should not be working with students.

Seriously? I’ve only ever visited Cali and never encountered issues. That’s one place I wouldn’t expect there to be so much racism since politically it tends to be more progressive and left wing. Which part if you don’t mind me asking and what have you encountered in your adult life? It was on my list of places to consider moving to. And no I never felt mistreated in any of the cities I’ve lived in in Cali (except the one I’m from lol) as they are rich cities and are more concerned about how much money you have. NOT saying race doesn’t play in, but I don’t think as much. Because in SF/LA you could have a lot of money and spend a lot of money in different places and people WANT your money so they treat right. There are always other places you can go to to spend that money. But dressing the part does come into play too. I noticed when I dressed “basic” (shorts, tennis shoes/sandals, tank top) I got treated way different than if I had just got off work with my business clothes on.

Ain’t no breeze in LA! That’s the damn desert! I’m sure most of Europe is like the Northeast…dreary days, overcasts, and can count hot days on one hand. That IS NOT California and especially not southern Cali. There is no such thing as seasons in southern Cali. That song…”it never rains in southern California” is true! I can count on one hand as many times it rained when I lived there. I didn’t miss having seasons after living in the Northeast but I did miss the trees and flowers blooming all over the place from back home. My mom pissed me off sending me a pic of the backyard tree blooming lol. If you live closer to the ocean it’s not as bad but I lived at the base of the mountains so it got HOT. Might be a few cities/neighborhoods that have blooming flowers but it’s not very much in LA as my city was not that bad and had trees blooming.

I worked for the state department at the time. I work for the govt still but I am in IT right now. It’s hella boring and not what I went to school for so while I love the design aspects of it, it just doesn’t hold my interest much. Plus I mostly telework which has made me kind of lazy lol. Of course the money in IT is always great, and you don’t even have to do your job that well. But I have always been more artistic. I’m really trying to be brave enough to separate myself from the material, live a more minimalistic lifestyle and do more traveling and gain more experience. I’ve got into stocks now for secondary income and to fund some dreams. I don’t want to be one of those older people who gave up.

That’s the question I have been asking. People keep saying she was just sitting there. Yes, she was sitting there being defiant. That sends a hell of a message to the other kids in the room. I say someone said call her parents. I’ve called every phone number on file before and none of them worked. I’ve called and had parents tell me Ms. Howard he/she is with you now, handle it. Absolutely not. But as a kid and an adult now, I didn’t act like these kids. I have so many associates that teach for a living and the stories they tell…. If people decide to be teachers they need to realize that there are kids who are going through things and kids that are going to disrupt the class. What you need to do is keep teaching the class because really, if i am playing candy crush saga on my phone with no to little volume is it really annoying everyone in the class that much that you have to stop teaching to talk to me. You can talk after class. This little girl did not need to be thrown around like that. The teacher knew better. He or she knew they should have just kept teaching the class and definitely should have stopped the police officer from touching that girl. If you were really annoyed with her being on her phone you should go to a different class (and yes Doink_Ahanahue, DHoward1913 it is not going to kill anyone to move there butts to a different class in 1-2 minutes). The police officer should definitely get fired. That is some ignorant and excessive shit that he pulled. He needs to get fired. Schools do not normally even have police. My schools had S.O.’s that stayed in the school (1 or 2) and they would never put there hands on you unless you were fighting another student but they would never go that far.
