Police have arrested a “person of interest” in a shooting that wounded Travis County District Judge Julie Kocurek on Friday.

Police detained Chimene Hamilton Onyeri, 28, on an unrelated fraud charge in Louisiana. He is being questioned in the Kocurek case.

Kocurek was targeted by the gunman as she returned home after attending a high school football game with her family.

The gunman stepped out of the shadows and fired four shots at a white SUV that Kocurek was a passenger in. All 4 shots missed their target.

Kocurek was hit by shrapnel and glass, but she was not directly shot.

A neighbor across the street told The American Statesman he heard 4 gunshots ring out in “rapid succession” on Scenic Drive.

Judge Kocurek was transported to a local hospital where she is listed in stable condition with a serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Onyeri has a rap sheet that includes arrests on fraud, identity theft, and evading arrest charges.

Judge Kocurek was considering a pending motion to revoke a plea deal in a 2012 fraud case involving Onyeri. The plea deal stems from Onyeri’s arrest for using a stolen debit card in Louisiana.

If the judge rejected the plea deal, Onyeri’s bond would have been revoked and he would be sent back to prison.
