El Chapo

The massive manhunt for Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo is over. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was reportedly captured by Mexican authorities on Friday.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced Guzman’s capture in a tweet today.

“Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained,” he tweeted in Spanish.

No other details were provided.

Guzman escaped from the maximum security Altiplano prison in Mexico on July 11. Several prison guards were arrested for turning their backs while Guzman’s associates dug a tunnel under his cell.

Guzman’s brazen escape drew comparisons to the movie Shawshank Redemption.

The complex tunnel took a year to dig. Authorities found earth moving equipment, electric power strips, ventilation ducts and a motorbike on rails inside the tunnel.

Guzman managed to elude capture for 7 months, while his son thumbed his nose at Mexican authorities by posting photos of his dad on social media.
