Sashalynn Rosa

A New Jersey mother and her 1-year-old son died of carbon monoxide poisoning after sitting in a running car during a blizzard.

Sashalynn Rosa, her son, Messiah, and her 3-year-old daughter were waiting in the running car while the children's father shoveled snow around the Mazda.

The tragic incident occurred at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Passaic, New Jersey.

The children's father discovered the motionless bodies when he opened the car door. Emergency personnel at Saint Mary’s Hospital Passaic worked hard to revive Rosa and her son, but they were pronounced dead.

The 3-year-old girl was transported to Saint Joseph Hospital in Paterson, N.J., where she is listed in critical condition.

“They were staying warm while the father was shoveling the vehicle out,” Detective Andy White said.

Detective White said the car's tailpipe was blocked by snow, allowing deadly carbon monoxide gas to back up into the car.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that causes irreversible brain damage and death within minutes if there is no adequate ventilation.

Symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, confusion, shortness of breath, and loss of consciousness.

At least 28 people died in the snow storm that battered the east coast this weekend.

  • Beyawnce

well how long does it take to shovel snow around a car? i've never been in snow

  • Buttercup

It depends on how much snow is there. I think they had 2+ ft of snow, so it probably took 45 minutes to an hour. He should've dug out the tailpipe first, but it probably didn't cross his mind.

  • Afiya

Heartbreaking :( I know the dad is going to need alot of therapy...so sad and they so beautiful. Hope the little girl doesn't have long-term affects.

  • Angela

In normal snow fall, not long. But this was a BLIZZARD. Not normal. Who knows how long it took him.

  • Milani

A woman here at work was just talking about her carbon monoxide detector going off at odd hrs and was joking about it. It's going off for a reason, I'm not sure why she thought it was funny. Please check your carbon monoxide detectors (if you have them) people.

  • GTFOHWTBS

did the car had exhaust issues and/or was the tailpipe of the vehicle covered by snow

  • LibraGirlonly

Oh my, this is heartbreaking. GOD bless this family.

  • harley_quinn2.0

The tailpipe was blocked by the snow

  • Angela

How can weather be evil? It's a normal part of life and it's something that we need in order for the ecosystem to function properly.

  • Buttercup

Yeah, that's no laughing matter. I get annoyed when folks post videos online and their smoke detector is beeping. Put a 9 volt in that thing and stop being lazy!

  • Mrs. Sunshine

So sorry to hear this terrible news..

  • MotherOfDragons, GetOffMyENuts

This is tragic. I pray for the health of the little girl and for the family as a whole.

  • http://www.sandrarose.com Django the God

Most people start shoveling the back tires. Especially if the car is rear wheel drive. I don't understand this.

  • Too Many Colors

There was a hotel here years back, that the occupants would occasionally report of a beeping in the room. One man was found dead in the room. They kept renting same room out. Same thing. A mother and her son died. Only did, did they realize, admit etc it was the Cm detector that had been going off in that room. National hotel chain. NC mountains.

No its not funny. It's called silent killer for a reason

  • harley_quinn2.0

Lmao. Hey Afiya! I hope Blac Chinese food and Fat Rob do get together. #Petty And Anber and Scott don't even look like they go together.

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

I shalt not change it.? Lol I try to keep batteries in the house but if I run out you might hear it for a day. Mine usually go out around the same time.

My detectors are hardwired with a battery backup. I try to go ahead and get the replacement in.

  • Buttercup

Every Christmas, I buy a large back of each size battery and I have to re-up around summer. It's not something I would remember to get, so I make sure I always have some on hand like soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.

  • LeBrick James

I'm kinda surprised that this kind of thing still happens.

    R.I.P. to all, though.

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

I'm trying to figure out why they decided to wait in the car instead of in the house. I'm not victim blaming I don't understand the logic behind this decision.

I hope the daughter improves and that her and her father are able to find healing.

  • Buttercup

Hahaha. But folks have the time to make a video but not pick up new batteries? That chirping drives me batty. One of mine started last week at 3 am. I had to replace it right then so that I could rest.

  • http://www.sandrarose.com Django the God

Mine are hardwired too. That should be code. If you making people wear seatbelts...

  • VV

    Ugh, this is just heartbreaking!

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

I don't know about in your area but here it seems everybody's battery goes out at the same time. Sometimes it's hard to find a 9v. Though the beeping drives me crazy, I'm not paying $10 at Target for the same batteries that are $5 at Walmart.

  • VV

He will forever carry that guilt I'm sure. I pray for him, what a terrible way to lose your family.

  • iWasteTime

That is while Kylie put up the pic of the Devil and said it was her brother.
    I'm here for Rob's Petty!

  • free

30 people died from shoveling snow, car fumes, sliding off the road, and sledding. UNNECESSARY!! while the media is showing all of these pics of folk shoveling and playing in the snow, please show an equal number of reminders that this shyt is hazardous!

  • Buttercup

They probably do go out around the same time since folks urge us to change the batteries when the time changes. I loathe Wally World, so I guess Target always has them when I need them. Lately, I order stuff like that on Amazon Prime Now.

  • nucynu25

Girl, Rob is getting closer & closer to not giving a single fugg & writing a tell-all.

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

    Unreal smh

  • Buttercup

The thing is I'm not sure if it would've crossed my mind either. I've only lived in a place where it snows heavily for 3 years and I always had a garage. I could've easily made the same mistake.

  • SummerBaby

? That's terrible! That is negligent on the hotels part.

  • LeBrick James

Years back I remember a young couple in NY where I used to
live both died after falling asleep in their car in the wintertime.

This carbon monoxide stuff has always scared me.
Maybe there need to be more Public Service Announcement ads
warning people about this kind of stuff.

  • AnonymousRose

you want Whyte media to show you this?

  • nucynu25

The petty side of me is like okay lil Korean but the adult in me is like bish let it go u let A 12 yr old steall yo baby daddy , get over it. Hustle , succeed & take care yo child .

  • LeBrick James

Hopefully there was a lawsuit because of that. They need to pay a price for that.

  • TheRealLee

"Detective White said the car’s tailpipe was blocked by snow, allowing deadly carbon monoxide gas to back up into the car." I was wondering if something was blocking the tailpipe, and there it is. Condelescences to the family

  • THE OLDER SISTAH

I agree with you. Public Service Announcements about the dangers associated with winter couldn't hurt. Hell, it might save someone's life.

  • Just Keya

Wish he would hurry up and get to that place. Half the book would be stuff we already figured anyway.

  • Just Keya

Prayers for this family. This is so very sad.

  • LeBrick James

A few people even died while shoveling snow too.

Not me. I’d rather pay somebody to do it for me, or make sure I have an electric snow shovel in
    my garage.
Not risking my life like that.

  • Ria

3 people at one time? That's awful.

Anyway, I'm going back to TeeMzee, where you can state your opinion without getting ganged up on. I feel like I'm in High School, here. ??

Black women of Sandra Rose don't like for your hair to be longer than theirs, or they'll attack you and call you Sybil the freak. ??

  • Jessica

Remove the snow from the tailpipe FIRST and then remove it from the other parts of the car. RIP to this mother and 1 year old son.

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

    Take Care hun

  • SummerBaby

    Wait whet?!

  • Buttercup

    Don't feed the troll.

  • Just Keya

How would we know if your hair was longer? I'm confused. But God speed and God Bless.

  • SummerBaby

I honestly could see my son or one of my nephews not realizing to clear snow from the tailpipe first. This is just a tragic accident.

  • SummerBaby

Thanks for bringing me back ?

  • Str8tUpMenace

Awful. Carbon monoxide is no damn joke. RIP to the mom and baby. Well wishes to the baby girl. Praying she pulls through.

Folks, please be sure to remove the snow from the tailpipe before even starting the car. Also be sure you have carbon monoxide detectors in your homes, and be sure that the batteries are good.

  • Buttercup

I just said the same thing about myself. It probably wouldn't have crossed my mind.

  • SummerBaby

Not at all especially with all the snow they had.

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

To be honest .... I would have never thought about it ... you can tell we don't get much snow here at all

  • LeBrick James

True. I've seen some Public Service Announcements about some relatively (to me) trivial stuff.

This stuff here is life or death. There needs to be more public awareness of this.

  • Str8tUpMenace

Like that whole family of cum-buckets aint the damn devil. SMH Old witches

  • Str8tUpMenace

It happens a lot. Especially this time of the year. Sad.

  • LeBrick James

She was just 23. I'm assuming the father was in the same age range too.
Probably just one of those things that life-experience would tell you you shouldnt do... but at 23, they probably werent even aware of the danger.

  • millz

yea i was thinking the dad is going thru it sooooo sad

  • SummerBaby

Exactly my son will make 22 tomorrow & I know his azz wouldn't have thought about it.

  • http://www.sandrarose.com Django the God

Maybe he had a heart attack shoveling and just didn't tell anybody. This had to take awhile right?

  • Str8tUpMenace

People have died from carbon monoxide poisoning even from the use of generators. Having them too close to the windows of the house can kill you.

  • Just Keya

I'm thinking of some twist or braids for the summer. Child. Smh

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

Girl I can not wait to sit in his chair ... I haven't pampered myself since August ... lawd .... I haven't had braids in a while ..... I'm sure it's going to be cute either way

  • Just Keya

The Mr told me he got stuck while driving Saturday. Had to keep getting out and shoveling. It was serious up here. That man up top was probably just trying to hurry up and get home. This is sad.

  • MotherOfDragons, GetOffMyENuts

Had my father not said it repeatedly the winter after I got my first car I know I wouldn't think to do it either. He went on and on about never turning on the car in the snow unless you dig out the back first and make sure it's clear. I should thank him for being so dang irritating.

  • Just Keya

    Go girl! Treat yourself. Shoot.

  • Buttercup

I think the lethal dose can take a very short amount of time such as 20 minutes.

  • Str8tUpMenace

Some places in Jersey got 30 - 34 inches, and cars were buried not only from the snow, but from snow plows riding past too. He was outside of the car, trying to dig it out, and carbon monoxide poisoning can take minutes.

  • VV

Right, any of us could. I lived in Chicago for 6 years and I'm from Texas. I still remember my first big snowfall and I was worried, I was all alone and not fully prepared. I remember trying to go outside to hop on the train and one of my neighbors stopped me and said: "Girl, you aren't from here, huh? You'll freeze to death, go back inside your apartment" I was like oh, ok O_O

  • SummerBaby

    Yes indeed!

  • VV

Hopefully they can get him some therapy because this was not his fault.

  • http://www.sandrarose.com Django the God

I used to shovel peoples driveways growing up. That was the most money I made as a kid. 20 minutes is a long time to be shoveling, for a grown man. He wasn't trying to clean the car off, just get it moving...

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

One of the best ways to kill someone is by running a hose from the car's tailpipe to a bedroom while they're asleep. They will never wake up, and the CO can't be detected in autopsy. The cause of death will be listed as natural causes.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

I really hope he didn't kill them on purpose.

Crazy thing about the carbon monoxide is, it's supposedly odorless. That is SCARY!

  • 1/8

How to get away with murder: make it look like an accident. Certain elements of this story are illogical.

    1. Why didn't they wait inside their home, while the snow was cleared around the vehicle?

    2. Why did it take him 20 minutes to notice his family was unconscious?

    3. Few people are able to shovel snow for twenty minutes without taking a break. It's logical to conclude that at some point, the father had to take a break and at least glance inside the car.

Well, if this really happened the way they said it did, this is clearly a case of natural selection.

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

Terrible..my heart goes out to their loved ones.

  • ArDnAhC45

They say you should make sure the exhaust pipe is free from snow when shoveling.

  • ArDnAhC45

    Me too.

  • CaliYoruba

yaaaaaas I was waiting on this! LOL

  • NAYB

Took me about 25 minutes just to clear my steps. We got 30 inches here.. It could have been almost an hr or even more if the plow trucks threw even more snow against their car.. Unfortunate they didn't think to just keep every one in the house until shoveling was done.

  • Mel

    Such a sad situation

  • imright

damn!!! she didnt get woozy?! sad

  • Torae

Jersey got about 30 inches of snow...it took my husband two hours to dig his car out....

  • WetPntees

But why would he be shoveling the snow AROUND the tailpipe instead of OUT of the way of the tailpipe?! Sounds suspicious to me... The Feds need to check his google history. May show something like "How to kill someone in their car during a snow storm."(scratches head)

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

A lot of people succumb to the elements while shoveling snow. Maybe they didn't want him by himself out there. I used to watch my dad the same way when he was shoveling snow. I sat in the car listening to the radio.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

Yes you can. Ask me how I know. You 'bout to get some folk hemmed up. ABG's and CBC's can determine that.

    Yep, even outside.

My cousin got CO poisoning once from the water heater. Thank God she was able to get herself and the kids out. They started really sleepy and nauseous. The water heater had been emitting low levels, but had they just thought it was something like a cold or flu coming on, medicated themselves, and went to sleep...
