religious freedom bill

After 3 hours of sometimes heated debate, the Georgia state Senate passed House Bill 757 by a vote of 38-14 on Friday. The House previously approved the religious freedom bill 161-0.

But Georgia's state Senate merged that bill with another more controversial bill.

The new bill adds protection for pastors who refuse to perform same sex weddings.

Additionally, the new bill exempts business owners from renting their facilities to gays for ceremonies that violate their religious beliefs.

The bill passed despite the U.S. Supreme Court legalizing same sex marriage across the land last year.

religious freedom bill

Gay groups such as Georgia Unites Against Discrimination referred to the bill as "state-sanctioned discrimination."

Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle declared a victory over "radical atheist groups."

In a Facebook post, he wrote: "the Senate passed legislation that will protect religious liberties of all of our public school student athletes."

"This sends a clear message that Georgia is still God's country," he added.

The bill is now on Gov. Nathan Deal's desk awaiting his signature.

No one should be force to do something against their religious beliefs just to please pop culture. You can respect people without being caught in their choices and beliefs

  • Divame

What about equal rights, religion is so dinosaurian with its practices. I say equal rights for all

  • Jean Paul Le’vonne

It’s just beyond stupid, a law made by morons for morons! Only Republicans would enact this type of legislation! I doubt these religious freedom fighters will withhold service to divorcees and adulterers!

  • Jackie Byrd

I agree no one should be forced to do something that they don't want period. If you don't want to deal with me that is your right. I got to where I am welcomed. Tired of people wanting to throw things down someone throat. Go where you can get the job done.

Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom to marry who the heck I want... Go to Eddie (Long) he'll marry ya...

  • Queen B

    Thank you God!! ????

  • starbright9449

No one is saying gays shouldn't be able to get married. They can, supreme court already took care of that so they have equal rights. But what calirose2501 is saying no one should be forced to do something they don't want. Meaning if I don't want to perform the ceremony/marry a gay couple, I shouldn't have to. What about my rights or the pastor's rights?

  • https://instagram.com/calirose2501/ calirose2501

Gay people should be able to get married if they choose to do so, but clergy should not be forced to marry them . If clergy can refuse to marry heterosexual people for religious reasons, it should be extended to gay people as well. Besides, why would you want to be married by clergy who don't share your same religious views anyways?

  • starbright9449

You little mad or big mad? People are always preaching equal rights for gays but what about the people who are uncomfortable marrying them? If a certain minister won't marry you then go to someone else who happily would and smile during the ceremony. It's that simple. There are plenty of them out there. Trying to force someone to do something against their will is ridiculous whether you're gay, bi or straight.

  • Empress

Agreed. A family friend's Pastor just refused to perform the wedding for her and fiance because he stated the groom was "not ready' in his Biblical opinion and he wouldn't reconsider it again for two years!! Her mother is livid, and they are going to another Pastor and that's exactly what a same-sex couple should do. No one, other than a County clerk/gov officer, should be forced to perform your marriage regardless of their reason.

  • hotntot95

Truly a sign of the times...when sexual preference becomes induced into government and law...despite what scripture says in black and white. Love whomever you want and God will still love you but that does NOT make the sin invalid.

Religion has no place in public policy. This is Kim Davis all over again.

  • Alicia.Ashe

Nothing but a bunch of religious hypocrites.

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

Clergymen were always exempt from performing the ceremony. That's why they can reject non members from their services along with other reasons like homosexuality. This is about the state passing unconstitutional laws that allow people to invoke their 'religious rights' so they don't have to serve gays. Just like they can invoke their religious rights not to serve women who are unaccompanied by a man, or blacks, or protestants, or j witnesses, or Muslims..again no religious institution can legally be forced to marry gays.

  • Zizzle

Go where you can get the job done.

Like the BLACKS ONLY water fountain?

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

Pastors were ALWAYS exempt from performing the ceremony. Seperation of church and state guaranteed that centuries ago. This is an attempt to allow your local grocery or bakery or roller rink to deny devices based on their religious beliefs. No service to Lutherans and Catholics because of my personal religious beliefs. No service to women if their heads aren't covered cause my religion.

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

That's why the politicians are making you believe this is about religious rights when religious institutions have always had the right to refuse gays. Gays getting married did not change that. This is about allowing religion as a right to deny services at your non religious institutions. When you can't fill up your car cause you're a woman and the shell gas owners religious rights are violated by having to serve you....you can thank this law

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

We all have our beliefs and that's all I've got. What I accept some shalt not anywhoo I had a ball in there today.

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

Pastors have the right to refuse service. They always had that right. (Separation of church and state). This is about secular businesses being able to invoke religious rights to deny services. Again, pastors always had the right. Georgia politicians figured people don't know the constitution so they could lead with this 'religious rights' (which were never in jeopardy), so they could pass this unconditional law.

  • Here for the comments

    To God be the Glory!

  • JJ

I agree that pastors should be allowed choice to deny marrying who they want but the second part of the bill I don't agree with that's a slippery slope. So business owners can deny allowing gay weddings? They're a business not a religious institution providing a religious ceremony! Businesses should not be given the same protection as religious leaders doesn't matter what owner believes in that sets a dangerous precedent of businesses being able to deny service to anyone they deem different, an abomination or whatever.

I see a lot of homosexuals are big mad in here tonight. Why though? Y'all don't want equal rights y'all just want to infringe on the rights of others. You all are never satisfied with what's given to you. Then some of y'all have the audacity to bring black people into it. IT'S NOT THE SAME THING! STOP COMPARING THE TWO! Black gays are seen as BLACK first then gay its never the other way around. They gay fight isn't a black one ,they only use the black gays for numbers. Like the white feminist who use black women for numbers as well.

So if they don't marry across faith, why you think they gotta adhere to the gays? If they weren't legally mandated to marry interracial couples in certain states either, I view this as the same. Unfortunately all 50 states are going to have to resort to this. Why? Because you have gay people suing bakeries because they don't want to bake them a cake! Yes, it's wrong but you can't force someone to do what they don't want to do based on their religious beliefs. If I were a card decorator I most certainly wouldn't want to do one for a Satanic group. This could also be some people's way of getting money out of innocent folks too.

There are even heterosexual couples that pastors refuse to marry without being sued.

  • Jahnée Gill Mr.Eddie Murphy

I'm not a christian, nor am I religious. The bible doesn't deal with religion if you read it you'd know that. Religion is a man mad construct used for division and to conquer. I'm a Hebrew Israelite like the people in the bible , you tried it though. If you spent as much time as you do spreading miss information, researching the truth you'd have a way better argument. Again you tired it!

  • 1/8

People shouldn't be forced to participate in anything that is in direct conflict with their beliefs, religious or otherwise.

Taking it a step further and perhaps, a bit more controversial, I believe a business owner should have the right to refuse ANYONE service; whether it's on the grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

However, if your company decides to exclude certain people, your policies should be made public, so everyone is aware of your business practices. In addition, businesses or organizations who engage in discriminatory practices, should lose the right to any taxpayer-funded money.

If Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle truly believes Georgia is god's country, maybe he should ask God to pay taxes and keep his hands out of the gays' pockets.

I think that most laws(just like most if not all of the Bible) can be interpreted in many ways to suit the agenda of the person using it. Black people are always being told that our rights will be violated if we don't support the causes of special interest groups' such as Women's Rights, LGBT. But our rights are already being violated regardless and when do these groups support us? As far as the LGBT community is concerned, I will get agitated about this law when I see them get agitated about #BlackLivesMatter. As far as I can see they have remained silent on White privilege and police violence unless it directly impacts them. They want to see Black people in the streets with Rainbow Flags, They want to see African Leaders abolish laws against homosexuality, Loving them is not good enough so they want to force old Black Church grannies to "accept" their personal way of life but at the end of the day the power and money and the true benefiters behind the LGBT movements are White Men and and no matter how nice their nail varnish and lace front is they still benefit from being White and DO NOT and have NEVER cared if a Black person is refused service, unless that person is LGBT(so it might happen to them). Our movements and focus is undermined by Women's Rights and Gay Rights and then when these rights are supposedly achieved our people are still catching hell. Race is the common denominator and I think that Black LGBT getting all in their feelings about these laws that still won't get them basic human rights in America is like fighting for right to run on a particular track when you don't have legs.

  • Empress

Black people are the Consumer Nation. Our labor built the Western World and our dollar, which we can't seem to get to rotate even once within our community, sustains it. If you think that major Corporations are EVER going to refuse Black people services you are mistaken. We are refused loans, housing, and basic human rights but they want our money to buy their BS products they just don't want us as neighbors. Why do you think you hardly EVER hear an LGBT story about fighting against unfair home or business loans for gays? It's because White LGBT can get any loan they want. The gross income disparity between a same-sex white couple and a Black one is huge. Why aren't they fighting for that. Our people are being maintained within a socio-economic box that will absolutely not be impacted at all by LGBT rights. When I see LGBT fighting for "Human Rights" that is when I will gladly put my rainbow cape on. You want some real okey doke study the impact in the long term on the Black community when Black women joined the "Women's Rights" movement and were promptly abandoned once Becky got her "rights".

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

I totally agree with you but again there was never a law in place that forced clergy to marry gays. Clergy are and have always been exempt from doing so.

This religious rights law is not about gays. They're the smokescreen (and it's working). This is about secular (non religious) businesses denying service based on religion. Let that sink in. Explore what that means for black people. I'm not here for the gays. I'm here about my people. The bible can easily be interpreted to not mix the races and you all will see people invoking their religious rights not to serve us. I wouldn't care if we actually had our own infrastructure but we are still at the mercy of others. Again this law is about us. Our (black people) civil rights are in jeopardy but I see most are blinded because they thought gay marriage rights meant their pastors would be forced to marry gays which is absolutely false.

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

Girl nothing you are saying is wrong. Again, this religious rights law is using the lgbt as a smokescreen. Again, pastors were ALWAYS exempt from performing same sex anything because of the separation of church and state. Yes! all these other groups piggy backed on our movement but that doesn't mean we stop securing what WE fought for. These are our civil rights in jeopardy. We already don't get loans which you can successfully sue if you qualified, now the bank can invoke their religious rights not to give loans to blacks ever and there is no recourse because of this law.

    For example
Gas station: I can't serve women whose heads are uncovered
Bank: I can't give loans to interracial couples
Employer: we don't hire women (they are only to be mothers per my religion)
You picking up what I'm putting down or nah

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

Exactly, this law does not secure anything that wasn't already secured. Clergy, despite same sex marriage being legal, are exempt from marrying them because their religious institutions are separate from the state. Too many emotional posters are arguing a non point like this law intended. Smokescreen on blast.

  • suganspice68

  • Leigh John

This is an absurd statement from a minority. There are people who believe, religiously, that white people were Gods chosen people and that they were justified in slavery.Passing a law to condone discrimination is a slippery slope.I have always said, if you do not believe in peoples free will(as did God) you are not a christian, you are a selective christian.God gave us free will, he has the power to make us submit but he doesn't, so what gives you the right to usurp God?Also, this is ONE sin that you so called Christians like to pick on, but while we are at stopping marriages, liars, cheaters, fornicators, those with tattoos , those with piercings should not get married either. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory if God, Romans 3:23, the bible is not trail MIX, stop picking a choosing what you want.

  • https://instagram.com/calirose2501/ calirose2501

Being a minority has nothing to do with my opinion sir. As stated, gays should be allowed to marry, but forcing someone who is not a public/gov employee is absurd. After blacks received their "rights", that did not stop discrimination from occurring from the non-minority at all. A boss can hire or not hire someone for any reason in real life, and we wouldn't know the real reason unless it is obvious or a pattern established. Civil Rights and discrimination laws prevent discrimination from being obvious, but no law will eliminate all discrimination. Clergy can reject marriages on any "religious" basis because that is controlled with private funds. As stated before, why would anyone be married by anyone who doesn't support the marriage anyway?

  • Leigh John

I am a girl, and being a minority has everything to do with it.No, discrimination is not eliminated, but its also not legalized. That's like saying Chipotle is a private business so they don't like black people, cool, they don't have to serve them.Laws set precedent. Most people are ignorant to the fact that legalized discrimination sets precedent for all discrimination. Most businesses are privately owned, does not mean they can pick and choose who to serve.America gives us the right to choose our religion or have no religion at all. That is why we have separation of church and state, this law negates that.As someone said before , pastors have always had the right to refuse to marry someone, this is about the so called "private" businesses that want that same right.

  • Leigh John

No one has the right to do what they want! I might want to kill someone, doesn't mean that I can, its illegal.Discrimination us also illegal, period .

Oh monyetta was a stupid bird tryna hang on to a nigga who had clearly moved on. SHE made choices that didn't pan out like she thought. Fuck what a nigga SAYS...use your brain and make smart life choices.

  • It’s Taurus Season

I've never seen it described as that in the news. Have you? It normally says previous. I've seen it twice today.

  • whitty hutton

The lgbthjklmnop are a bunch of whiny ass bullies. They have the legal right to marry, meaning they can obtain a marriage license, file taxes together, etc. Why they want to force businesses to bake their cakes, host their "weddings", etc. is just another attempt to shove their lifestyle down our throats, and frankly I'm sick of it. There's plenty of businesses that will gladly service them ...patronize them and leave the rest of out of that messy bullshyt.

  • whitty hutton

We heard u the first time dammit!

Interesting observation. Gold star for you?? That's that SR type of word play that the media uses to manipulate folks,,,and they don't even know...Its effective...Persuausive...Meanwhile, I drove past a group of chanting Asians and media vans en route to class. Something about seeking justice for...Nvm...That's not what this is about...Relax...Relate...Ejaculate? Tell Jen I said her coochie smells like hemidemisemiquaver,,,It's code...She'll know??

  • http://Copblock.org aDingoDrankMyBabies

Hi. I could add on, but, what's the point?? The good ol CKKK. Whatever though. I've actually been studying African religion...I ran accross some material that explained how the Hatians were able to defeat that lil White man...Napoleon something? Anyway, fascinating stuff. One day. Not in our life times...One day though. Black churches deposit billions to banks annually...Same banks that turn around and...Anyway, this ain't about that? I hope your day was??? Good...Mine was kool. Aiight mayne, lata??

  • beba micou

Everybody is entitled to their opinions about what they feel their religion tells them; so long as it does not encroach upon the civil and humanitarian liberties of another. And if you are gay, then why would you want to give your money to someone who doesn't want it because of your sexuality? What's sad is that we have to make a law in order for people to exercise their right to refuse. That's like me wanting to go into a bar that hates blacks, then getting mad cause they don't wanna serve me... f*ck em... what one won't do, another will. This ain't Jim crow days... we ain't goin for that.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

I don't see the issue with pastors chosing who they do or don't want to marry. They've always done that.

The real issue is probably hidden in this bill. Because declining to marry the gays gets the people going that's all they're focused on.

There was a law passed here in NC where the headline was that there were no more safe havens for illegal immigrants, cops had to follow the law. People were mad, protesting and the like. Really the law didn't mean much... the headline got the people going 'illegal immigrants' but the real issue was that in that same bill food stamps were being cut. Nobody was talking about that. That was the important part of that law.

  • NeverSurprised

I always find it amusing to see the gays attempting to force fundamentalist Christians to marry them, or bake their "wedding" cakes, or do their floral arrangements. Why don't they ever go into a MOSQUE and demand that fundamentalist IMAMS marry them? Why don't they go into MUSLIM bakeries and demand that MUSLIM bakers bake gay "wedding" cakes? Why is it only CHRISTIANS whom they target? Because they know Muslims would start slicing some heads in a heartbeat, that's why.

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

Back when NC was having their debate about amending the constitution to allow gay marriage, I knew a black man married to a white woman who felt strongly that they (gays) shouldn't be allowed to get married. .. bumper stickers on cars and all. I told him he was ignorant as fawk considering 50 years ago he wouldn't have been able to marry that melanin deficient hoe because it was illegal.

  • Dimpies

What about the Christian couple fined $135000 for refusing to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding or the Jewish store owner sued for refusing a to cater a gay wedding???

  • Jusstlookn

    Ha

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

No I've never seen it like that smh

  • It’s Taurus Season

  • Jusstlookn

Girl, you werent far off, like who gets their tubes tied for their boyfriend. Where they do that at? Queations Gal iz you foolish? Where iz her Aunties, her mama, a wise radical girlfriend like me...you? He would have had to pay me enough to rebuild entire reproductive system.

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

Tew murch? Can you tell I don't like that bish?

  • Auditor

Lol what she do to you

  • MzFutureLCSW

Good. The main issue I see with this is many of these same people will pervert God's Word to justify poor treatment towards Blacks.

  • Neverendingstory

Partially. Regarding banks, the ECOA prohibits any kind of discrimination, even religious. I hear you though.

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

    I cannot stand Kenya I tell you I can't

  • Jahnée Gill Mr.Eddie Murphy

You don't read the bible more do you believe in the most high. Rebruke yourself.

  • Blaque Mahogany

Yeah...same here. I started late...but I will say Kim did not deny it...unless they edited it out. She did not explicitly say he is not gay.

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

I missed some of it because my stream was acting up but she was getting on my nerves. If he is that way it's none of her business.

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

Not much its what ive seen done to other people. She's a grimy dirty hoe. I don't talk to him anymore so she is no longer an issue for me.

  • Blaque Mahogany

None. She's had a real boyfriend for all of 2 minutes. I went to her IG and she actually has pics of him up. I remember when she had the alleged boyfriend before and all you saw was a pic of his arm, nose, back of his head. Never an actual picture of the man. She's pathetic.

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

Lol let's not forget Walter was paid for by Bravo ???????

It's either killed or be killed. I tried watching TWD but these zombies are a no lol. Po feller tho he ain't want to do it.

  • AJ

In 2016, there are state laws that make it ok to discriminate against gays in the housing and employment arena. It is ok to fire gays for being gay and prevent them from getting housing for being gay. This exists in 2016. You are mistaken if you think AAs being refused loans, housing and basic human rights is not a big deal. And yes, with these laws on the books discriminating against one group makes it easier to discriminate against another. There still exist those who do not want us to come to their neighborhoods AND come into their businesses. Despite what you think, GREEN does not always trump the ignorance and stupidity of others. There are those who do not want us here. Period.
It was fine to have us here as slaves building this country, but there are those who feel that we are no longer needed, if the free labor is not guaranteed. Hence, the efforts to destroy our community: the unbalanced prison system, school to prison pipeline, subpar education, subpar housing, food deserts, lack of employment opportunities, contaminated drinking water, etc. If you think these anti-gay laws have nothing to do with discrimination against other groups, you are sadly mistaken. We do not live in a vacuum.

  • 88

Be aware that 300 years ago Christianity taught black ppl that the holy bible said they were supposed to be slaves.

  • Jusstlookn

My take why deny what is not true. Certain type of folks, Ill call them high brow. Dont have time, for such nonsense. Wish I could ignore folks.

  • whitty hutton

See...the way my petty is set up...high brow woulda took a back seat while I put my foot down Kenya's thoak -LITERALLY!!

  • lahla s

This is Georgia! Did anyone expect anything different?

  • Noirluv45

Yes, I understand that's what was being taught, but definitely is not true. Interpretation is key, 88.

  • Noirluv45

That's quite interesting. What did he say?

  • Blaque Mahogany

Yeah and I get that, but she did not respond like that was the first time she had heard it. If that had really been the first time I would think a "What?!", at least, would be appropriate. So maybe she's just had enough experience with the accusations that shes no longer phased.

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

He started talking about the bible. It's against the Lords wishes etc. I reminded him that I too am Christian but let's not forget that the bible is frequently twisted in whatever way man sees of benefit to him. Let's not forget slavery, the supremacy of white people, our friendship started to fall apart when I realized he was truly an idiot. Spewing whatever rhetoric he heard around him.

  • Fendi

I see you preaching my gospel in my absence. Bless you.

  • Well.well$well

    +1.

  • Jusstlookn

    LMBO

  • Jusstlookn

Get what you saying I've had pass associates aka jealous types saying things about abc. I gave one response, we never spoke again. THIS person reminds me of Kenya but add 250 pounds.

You can't pay some people no mind, unless you really care about them. But if a group of 100's of people are doing that, let them talk. You can't change their opinion. You be tired, stressed and maybe in bald.

To add, Kenya has mental issues, lastly effects of what her mother did to her, she projects that on to other women. Po Thang

  • free

can someone explain that pic to me?

  • YES I SAID IT…

Exactly! The gys should have their rights but just bcuz they have rights shouldn't take away from those that are against it to have their rights

  • Mel

Why I thought that was a pic of Neyo in the hat and mama dee ?

  • 88

    True dat.

  • Genia Gouch

To have one group's civil liberties threatened is a threat to all's civil liberties..that's what a lot of people don't understand......

    From the lectures of Niemöller

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

  • whitty hutton

    "add 250 pounds..."

    **hateful** ???

  • CJ413

    Amen!!

  • butchie4ever

This law will never be implemented...There will be an injunction until it is challenged before the courts until it gets to the supreme court where it will be overturned...

  • Liah

    I agree

  • Liah

    Right!!!

  • LordeAmbler

The threat to black people freedoms lie in the hands of black homophobic pastors and white supremacy. This is a slap and now they can legally slap you. Yes it should be optional for you to have a differing opinion but this opens the door to hide the real agenda behind beliefs. Now I could hate your black ass because your black. But I can't say that so I can say my religion allows me not to serve you or have you in my establishment because you serve a different belief system then me. Smh.

  • LordeAmbler

There using the gay agenda to cover up hate.

  • starbright9449

Back then whites didn't have to serve blacks. We grew our own food and cooked our own food. This is like people complaining about the golden globes being prejudice with their picks. Why go to white peoples award shows? Go to your own or come up with your own. Why go to someone who doesn't wanna serve you or respect you as a person? I have dignity and self respect. I went into a pharmacy a few weeks ago and the white lady who owned it didn't want my hand to touch hers. I didn't know she was racist but when she did that foolery I walked out, spread the word she's a racist and never went back.

  • 1/8

"Why go to someone who doesn't wanna serve you or respect you as a person?"

That is precisely my point! Why beg some @$$hole to take your hard-earned money?

When a cashier is rude to me, I withdraw my purchase and contact their corporate office or go online and write a bad review.

  • Larae

Why not patronize someone else. Itsva win win

  • Scroogwap

But the Bible never said that so carry on

  • Scroogwap

Nobody has to marry same sex if they don't want to. Stop forcing alternative lifestyles down everyone's throat.

  • Oya Shango

What good is a person's religious beliefs and taboos if the state can impose any law it wants to override them? . . . No one should be forced to choose between their faith and what is culturally popular. I am still reeling over being forced to share a bathroom with a biologically born male. I will never agree to that. . . .ever.

  • Joe Thompson

If we are supposed to have a freedom of choice in this country then if we choose not to participate in something we dont believe in just to satisfy the desires of others no matter what they may be then why is there so much controversy about this bill. It seems to me that this bill is just making it legal to choose for ourselves whether we want to participate in something or not
