Shaniaya Hunter

A Georgia high school teacher is in hot water for calling one of his students "the dumbest girl I have ever met."

Shaniaya Hunter, a junior at Greene County High School, has an eye condition that caused her to miss a number of days from class.

After a few unexcused absences, Hunter asked her teacher if she could take a makeup test. But the male teacher allegedly said, "I have been around for 37 years and clearly, you are the dumbest girl that I have ever met."

The unidentified teacher added: "You know what your purpose going to be? To have sex and have children, because you ain't gonna never be smart."

Hunter told WSB-TV the teacher was known for insulting other students. So she recorded his outburst on her iPad.

"It really hurt me inside," Hunter said.

"This man does not need to be teaching young children," said Hunter's attorney Ben Windham. "It's not a gray area. End of story."

"This is about a school system that is failing our children and allowing these acts to go on," said Hunter's aunt, Christie Lockhart.

"We're gonna fight. We're gonna keep fighting until it's over. It's not over yet," Hunter's mother, Cathy Wright, said.

    Wow...

  • Auditor

At least it wasn't another case of molestation...

  • jussaying

oh my gosh what in the blue eff. teachers are supposed to inspire and encourage kids. to challenge them to be better and shape their minds. not kill their spirit. this makes me really sad. people do not understand the power of their words. she's going to remember that forever.

ugh that teacher needs to go play in traffic.

  • That’s Interesting

He should be ashamed of himself. However, the teachers and school systems aren't failing the kids. It's the parents!

  • brooklyn23

    I concur

  • brooklyn23

Omg stop putting all blame on parents.
i get it its human nature (I guess) to put blame somewhere even if its not warranted, but you didnt even have the decency to say some parents.

  • jussaying

    LMAO.

  • That’s Interesting

It is the parents fault. Period. If your child makes it out of elementary school and they can't read, it's your fault. I'm not talking about the parents whose children will do well (even tho they possibly could have done better in a better school) in any setting, and have no other choice but to send their kids to these failing schools. The teachers can't teach cause the children don't know how to act. The schools have no discipline because the homes don't. Who would you rather pass the buck to?

  • McLovin

Yeah but this is still abuse.

  • Tammie Reed

So sad for this young lady! I hope she moves on from this and becomes something great! Similar story happened to me when I went back to college to finish my degree! The professor I had used to tear my papers up and said I would NEVER work in any form of media.

I explained to her that I had a lot of adversity growing up and went to an inner public school in Cleveland, Ohio so the teachers weren't really trying to help us back then, they just wanted a paycheck. I had lots of issues in high school because of that and I didnt have the resources to prepare me for college. She didn't care lol.

Well we know what happened later on. Five years later, they invited me back to speak at my college and who was sitting front row? That Caucasian professor looking pretty red in the face! I never uttered one word to her either, smh! I got a standing ovation after my speech too. Don't let anyone dull your shine young lady!

  • Wuts got Petty Davis Eyes..

It is sad.. there are some teachers who truly LOVE kids... and then there are the burned out ones who should not be teaching anymore or never should have started...

  • Yoni

AT least the school. All else will fall into place. Hell go to the girls page. I'm SURE all the info is there WITH sound.

  • Angela

And your comment is why these kids are running around here straight out of control acting like wild uncaged animals outside the zoo. Just curious, who's to blame if it's not the parents?

I want to be like you when I grow up. I wouldn't have passed up an opportunity to gloat. My former bestie's mom told me that I wouldn't be able to finish college, work, and take care of Lil Butter on my own. Each semester I made Dean's List, I made a copy and sent it to her. I also sent her a graduation bulletin (since I didn't care to attend.)

  • Luv Pitties

Hell I used to have my 7th grade teacher tell me that I was a day late and a dollar short; simply because I was struggling in math and had gone from being on the honor roll to D's and F's because my mother's (now ex-husband) husband kept trying to make it my responsibility to "give him some" when my mother wouldn't give him any.

  • LeBrick James

Does that teacher still have his job?
    And if so, why?

  • Milani

What a shame, smh...for some of these kids, teachers sometimes take the place of a parent, as far as guidance, etc. It's a shame that this teacher felt the need to tell this girl she's the dumbest girl he's ever met and all she's good for is sex and making babies. What an asshole...some things don't need to be said. YOU are the adult.

If a child frustrates you to the point to where you have to put them down and insult them, then maybe you don't need to be teaching...maybe you'd be well suited to teach men in prison. Try telling some of those dudes they're the dumbest mofos you've ever met....

I was young so I obviously digested the seed he planted and felt like I was nothing. Fast forward with hard work Well have you to know I work in the legal field where my specialty is contracts and numbers and currently in school for accounting and over exceeded all of my math test that I have ever taken in school and college. And currently I invest in stocks and bonds.
I am where he said I would never be.

  • imright

dammmmnnnnn thats how yall do n GA?? ?

  • Branch Davidian

If you cannot restrain yourself from insulting and berating kids you shouldn't be teaching...at all. We all know teenagers do dumb shit and are a pain in the ass but to belittle a young person like that is despicable. And nowhere in the article did it mention what her actual grades were so you really don't know what to "blame the parents" for. All that being said, the best lesson you could give the kid is to let that stuff go and SUCCEED just to stick it to that P O S teacher. Don't try and turn that guys stupidity into a lottery ticket. Just get his ass fired and move on...

  • lil goodie

She wasn't to damn dumb. .she recorded his azz...

  • Brook York

    Homeschooling, can't go wrong.

  • Amel

    Disgusting.

  • Amel

Its the parent fault the teacher said this? How?

  • fresnostateofmind

Thanks for the visual and olfactory descriptions.

  • 88

That's how a white teacher spoke to a Black student.

  • BZandaz

What's his name and what school does he teach at that's all I need to know......

  • _perfectly__incomplete__

because you ain’t gonna never be smart
    ....................
Is this the teacher that said this cause she cant talk

  • Sheyonce

Completely agree! EVERYTHING starts at home.

  • Sheyonce

    LOL yes!

  • THE OLDER SISTAH

    +1000

  • Sheyonce

RIGHT! That threw me off as well. How are you going to call someone dumb and SOUND DUMB while doing it? Smdh...

  • ?Patty Kakes?

Its because of teachers like that some black kids fall through the cracks

  • Vonn

“You know what your purpose going to be? To have sex and have children, because you ain’t gonna never be smart.” I hope that this is not a verbatim quote from the teacher. If so... He sounds like he graduated from Pookie's College For The Functionally Illiterate.

  • jussaying

Lol he sounds like the evil villain from the hood in a Tyler Perry flick. I'm just imagining him with high arched eyebrows and a mean snarl with dramatic music behind him.

  • Raechele Brown

I was thinking the EXACT same thing!!! "... You ain't gonna never be smart." WTF?! The worst grammar!

  • Vonn

Don't forget the hairy mole on his face.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

    Noooo

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

I promise I would have stated what she said and thanked her from the podium for giving me strength. I would have told the students don't ever let anyone, even your momma deter you from your dreams and goals. I swear I tell Baby Freebush this. Chile, goodness forbid, what if the Alltimer's came knocking and momma is talking out of her head? Don't let momma tell you what you can't be. Hayle, momma don't know who the hayle SHE is.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

I see what you did there.

  • Stan4NoOne

Lord forgive me but... is she dumb?

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

I would have asked her to stand and thanked her. I swear it. She deserves a big ole Kudos for that.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

But he will. Same as the occifer. He will. It would be different if these type of people would turn their lives around and say I USED to be an azz.

  • Vonn

They should revoke his teaching credentials for that quote.

  • That’s Interesting

    That's not what I said.

  • barbeez

Okay. What is this eye condition? Why weren't special arrangements made by her mother and the principal to make up school work. Imma say it. The kid is dumb. He wouldn't just say that. I was a sub and I was surrounded by teenagers who couldn't read or speak correctly. It was exhausting. Yeah...some kids just are dumb. Maybe she'll be inspired to study harder. These kids nowadays are coddled. We were paddled and had to go back in class and sit on our sore butts.

  • barbeez

No her mother should have made arrangements with the teacher or principal. If she is known for "missing" school then school officials should have been aware of it and special arrangements should have been made due to her mysterious eye illness. Maybe she missed one too many tests and he was tired of it.

  • barbeez

I agree. Most kids who have "medical conditions" have special arrangements made with the school administrators. It sounds like this girl just misses a lot of school. I smell b.s.

  • Auditor

Yeaaa...Auditor here...I hate when folks think that's math...real math does not use numbers. When you use nothing but symbols that's REAL math!

And sidenot...I'm highly upset that I learned all that accounting garbage for no reason. I don't even deal with numbers maybe less than 5% of my job. Audit should be emphasized more since that's the main career people go into...all that other ish is for the birds...

  • ramosyo

$$$$$$$$ listen the money will ease the pain!!???

  • Auditor

Assuming that she could...I've always loved math and science...for one reason only...no one can tell you 1+1 is not 2 or that O2 is not oxygen. All those other subjects are subjective and up to the teacher on what you get. I've had teachers miscalculate ONLY my grade like it was an accident or downgrade my ish like I didn't follow directions or didn't know what I was doing.

  • Auditor

Exactly folks need to find their kids strengths EARLY ON and cater to it. BUT that could also hinder a child...you haven't been exposed to everything (one reason why you get exposed to so many different subjects in school) and may have undeveloped talents. So it's a catch-22...

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

Interesting. You were a sub. So you didn't stay in one class or school for any given time, no?

Just asking so that I can understand.

You didn't feel the dumb students were a reflection of the school or the teachers who are charged with teaching them and identifying what works to help them learn? The teachers are suppose to be the educated ones. The students are there to learn.

Just asking so that I can understand.

  • Auditor

It's actually pretty hard to become a teacher nowadays. Numerous tests and education courses have to be taken in all states. Might be able to slide through as a special education, math, science teacher BUT you still need either a major in it or test out of the subjects.

I thought about being a special education teacher when the economy tanked and they were paying damn good.

  • Auditor

Suing for what? Cause somebody told you about yourself...for every one person that said some ol bullsh*t to me...chile I'd be rich!

  • HisLovelyOne

How is he a teacher, when he clearly can't speak proper English?

  • Auditor

    Go head!

  • Auditor

Lol woulda been like "and I would like to give a big thanks to the woman who said I couldn't do ish...please STAND UP"!

  • Jusstlookn

My son use to go to public school, All the teachers aren't that smart. A hurt dog can bark.

  • Auditor

Yea are they "newer" teachers or older teachers? I don't know if the old teachers have to fulfill all the new requirements. But I know since at least 2009 you've had to complete a lot of requirements...very costly too. Thanks to No Child Left Behind...which is some bulllsh*t in itself...

  • Jusstlookn

Yeah, both in my opinion, my husband was educator for a brief period after finishing undergrad and before becoming an attorney. I've also worked in the school system and I'm very aware that many teachers stay doped up all day on "calming" meds. The system needs a complete overhaul, there are MANY children that are passed through and can barely write a complete sentence. I pray for children in school now. So sad

  • Jusstlookn

    Being "cheeky"

  • Auditor

Eh I'll say it's a combination of things...large class sizes, mixing slow kids with faster kids, parents aint sh*t (you have to REINFORCE daily or teaching something one time is not going to do it), kids don't want to learn/be there, teachers ain't sh*t, AND the curriculum ain't sh*t (minorities getting one thing while white schools get another).

  • phillyrick

Who said she couldn't read? This child had an eye condition that made her miss lessons. Nowhere does it say she didn't know how to act or she can't read.

  • phillyrick

She had an eye condition. What part of a medical absence gets him upset? The fact that shes trying to make up lost work is a sign of good parenting. A bad parent wouldn't have instilled the work ethic into the child to even consider making up the missed lessons. I see plenty of you people have a limited ability to assess a situation from both sides.

  • phillyrick

On top of that it doesn't say she was "known" for missing school.

  • more

It's not always the case I came from. A school that did not give a fawk..they passed you no matter what aND the teachers did not care. Although it benifits me later on in life it's still (greatful) it's still more than just bad kids not wanting to learn and passing out bad grades that don't work

  • JayCee087

I think it's an awful thing to say to a child (regardless if it's true or not), but I completely agree with you.

Me being raised in a two-parent household, with one half being Igbo/Nigerian, hell would freeze, pigs would fly, JLo would sing like Mariah, and whatever Idiom you can come up with before they would allow me to act a plum fool in public, especially in a classroom. Many of these children lack discipline, respect and hometraining, and these are things that (should) come from anyone's first teachers: the parents.

  • That’s Interesting

And nowhere did I say she couldn't.

  • phillyrick

"It is the parents fault. Period. If your child makes it out of elementary school and they can't read, it's your fault..."

^^^^^ Those are your words when you blamed it on the parent. And if you say you weren't referring to her then that means you are just making up scenarios that don't apply to justify your rant. Either that or you're on drugs and can't remember what you said.

  • That’s Interesting

Wtf are you talking about? You must have gone to one of those schools. Do you even know what a rant is? No, I was not referring to her and I'm not sure why you would even think I was. Reading comprehension is fundamental. Good night ma'am or sir.

  • phillyrick

So you make up a hypothetical situation that doesnt apply in order to justify your rant about it being the parents fault. Hmmmm. Then you try to distance yourself from your own position. Wow. Please explain again how this is the parents fault.

  • KayNicole

The teacher said, "You ain't gonna never..."

  • morenYAHdelsur

    Damn, Gina!

  • Shana

It's funny to me. Really, lemme see the report card receipt proving him wrong? Let's keep it all the way real - if you have an eye condition (medical) keeping you from school, you should never have an unexcused absence...
    Parents -DO BETTER

  • LotusFlowerBombOne

Could be paraphrasing and not verbatim... Either way what he said was wrong.

  • LotusFlowerBombOne

    Agreed...

  • TOO REAL

Lets talk dumb. He's been teaching for 37 years and still was not offered a job to be principal.

  • Guess Who

LMMFAO! I don't think it quite works that way but I feel you!!!!

  • HelloToni

I do hope that they student does re-evaluate her education .....The teacher said it; however grossly inappropriate, for a reason. Reality check.

  • Noirluv45

The reason could be that he's a jackass. The reality check is that he need not talk since his grammar isn't top notch.

  • Softballumpire

Anyone who didn't do a thing for this child needs to be fired from the school

  • Softballumpire

really who fail the student insulting the student not allowing her make up? say that again

  • Softballumpire

its your parents fault your a liar and can't see the real problem is teacher and you be ignorant as a douche

  • Softballumpire

you are defeding by saying its parents fault shut your yap

  • Softballumpire

your just full of it to agree with this person

  • Candance

    So Sad!!!!

  • CaramelDrop

You have to be an educator to understand! I totally agree with you - I can't say all parents but ALL the parents that I deal with, and the child has NO MENTAL disability causing behavioral problems.... yes, 10 times out of 10, it's the parents influence/environment/circumstance that is the primary (sole) contributor. Case in point: cursing, disruptive, unruly children usually come from a home full of cursing, constant fussing, no regard for rules, authority or the law - it is, what it is. We have to stoping just "having" kids and start raising them

  • CaramelDrop

Her point was NOT HYPOTHETICAL at all. This is the situation in so many schools and so many homes. The program I am affiliated was created specifically to encourage learning in the home before school - reinforcing the FACT that parents are their child's first teacher. Unfortunately, too many parents think it's the teachers job to teach the student EVERYTHING. The teacher is there to set the building blocks, expose the child to the state mandates curriculum.... Everything else is on the parent. If your child is in good mental health and starts kinder without know their first and last name, how to write it, primary colors and can't at the least count to 10 - the PARENTS have failed their child

  • That’s Interesting

    Amen!

  • Ssik am

It's also the food we eat. Junk food is bad for your brain. Asians are so smart because they eat a lot of fish which is good for your brain.

  • phillyrick

Her point WAS hypothetical. Nothing she said pertained to THIS situation involving this girl. She spewed some hypothetical scenario to support her rant which had NOTHING to do with the FACTS of this case. She invented an issue to defend. Just like you are doing. What does any of that have to do with this particular case? Please explain what part of this story involving THIS girl is in direct correlation with anything either of you are ranting about. Nowhere was it mentioned that this child couldnt read, write or know her first and last name. None of that applies to this girl. You both are inventing issues to defend as you go on your unsolicited rants.

  • Jennifer Johnson

"because you ain’t gonna never be smart.”....lol.
I think this 'educated' (I use that word loosely ) moron's ridiculous and grammatically incorrect statement pretty much says everything, no?
    What a prick.

  • Jennifer Johnson

    Lol
