Bob Poe

Congressional candidate Bob Poe, of Orlando, announced he is HIV positive.

Poe, who is running for a seat in Florida’s 10th congressional district, made the announcement on his Facebook page Friday.

The former chairman of the Florida Democratic Party said he was motivated to announce his HIV status to the public after he met a woman who told him her HIV status was a death sentence.

He said he wanted her to know she wasn't alone.

In the video, Poe said he was diagnosed with HIV 18 years ago, and he is “perfectly healthy.”

Poe, 61, is openly gay. He tied the knot with his partner of 8 years, Ken Brown, 60 (pictured far right), in 2015.

Poe has an adult daughter, Virginia Poe (pictured above) from a previous relationship with a woman.

In 2011, Obama, pictured above left, asked Poe to be the finance chairman for his 2012 reelection campaign.

Good evening. I appreciate the lack of negativity on this post.I am HIV positive and married with children that are negative. Medical science has come a long way and it really is no more different than diabetes. No one shoul want this but it isn't a death sentence. I am really glad people are coming out about it. Do l wish l negative of course! However l am happy and healthy ( undectable)with God blessing with a wonderful husband and children. Please everyone stay blesses educated.

One problem; diabetes is not an infectious disease.

  • <—Doesn'tTalkToStrangers

I think she meant it's manageable

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

In what way? People with diabetes type I can die within minutes if they don't take their insulin on time.

He is not perfectly healthy, he is reasonably healthy. Some words people should not misuse.

  • Gail West

Hi .Thanks for the response. Very trure.l meant in terms of health management, quality of life and longevity. I have current and reputable sources that show that people have a less than 1percent chance of transmission if undectable and less than 4 percent if having anal. This is without using prep. I will be happy to share if you want not to sure about posting links.I really enjoy your site and the majority of your commenters

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Exactly. Like saying HIV is "no different than diabetes." I have diabetes type 2, and I didn't get it by having unprotected sex.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

How is HIV undetectable without using Prep or another antiviral drug?

  • Gail West

Blood didn't start getting tested till 1985. ...that being said everyone who is poz did not get it from sex we shouldn't just assume that.

  • http://Copblock.org aDingoDrankMyBabies

    What people? Link??

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

For the sake of argument, I am an RN who actually cared for HIV/AIDS patients, Every single one of them -- every last one -- contracted HIV through unsafe sex. So, just for the sake of argument, don't spread false information on this blog or twist the stats to fit your agenda.

  • Gail West

Prep is for people who are negative in a serotype relationship. The only way you can be undectable is with anti virals. That is what l meant by the diabetes comparison. If you take your meds and take of yourself you can live a long productive and healthy life and unlikely to transmit.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose
  • Gail West

That is inaccurate because prior to the 90s it was in the blood supply because no one knew what it was. Peopl who shared needles i.e drug addicts and l know health care professionals who got it through needle sticks. However l encourage you to do the research yourself.

  • http://Copblock.org aDingoDrankMyBabies

    Healthy! Seriously!

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Maybe you should do some more research. The virus that causes AIDS was discovered in 1984 -- the same year that I was in nursing school. Every doctor in the hospital where I worked knew that the virus was spread mainly by gay sex. It was known way before 1990 how HIV got into the blood supply. That's why the gays were banned from giving blood. Try again.

I am glad that you are able to live a good life. There is a fine line between normalcy and truth. We want people to be open but we cant down play the risk. Its an expensive illness. Depending on how far along person a was detrimens how person b will have to deal. People need to take it seriously and they dont. Its not manageble for everyone. So please dont say its like diabetes. Maybe for you but ive seen some people that their body just couldnt adapt. I am glad that you and others are doing great.

  • Gail West

Please go on AIDS.gov it explicitly tells you when we discovered was in the blood supply and when the test was created I truly respect your pov and l believe in facts . However working with people and living with HIV is is different and l made it a point not to spread false information because l for one know how dangerous that can be but thank you for the respectful exchange.

  • <—Doesn'tTalkToStrangers

Manageable as in you can live a somewhat normal life IF you take your meds.

  • Somewhat

    Exactly

  • lovelygamour

In my travels I met a guy who was very flip about it. He thought that he would be like the others. The keys to being ok are money and genetics. Some people live for years and others make it for 5. This guy got really ill and he only made it 3 yrs.
We want those with it to live full lives but at the same time people need to understand risk. I also met a lady who got hepitis from a surgery.

  • Somewhat

So sick of people with HIV saying their healthy really smfh then why are you taking meds everyday. I don't want that kind of "healthy" smfh

  • side_i

    I wouldn't doubt it.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

They lurk on this blog waiting for the opportunity to spread misinformation and downplay the role of random sex in this epidemic. Meanwhile, the HIV rates are skyrocketing in the black community.

  • Gail West

Thank you. My intention wasn't to downplay but some people dont take care of themselves out of fear that it is a death sentence. We want people to be responsible but my truth that is not end. Thank you for your feedback

  • Somewhat

Exactly!!! People trying to play down HIV like it's cool or something. They should start increasing the charges of people out their sleeping around knowing what they have smfh

  • lovelygamour

If it works for their body. Some people cycle fast. And some people cant use the standard cocktail. When it gets to that point it becomes super expensive.

  • ReadingIsFundamental4Real

right. manageable is not healthy. same as me not wanting herpes or any of that other "manageable" shitt. you can be smart with it but, you are not healthy with it. you can live a productive life but you are not healthy. saying "healthy" gives a false teaching to people as if it isn't still just as important to make positive and safe choices in their sex life. communication is key and i'm glad he came out but, his choice of words are misleading. you can have HIV and AIDS and still be good human beings and productive to our society but, damnit, you are not healthy. ... own that.

  • Somewhat

Exactly because it was suppose to be a disease for gays then it spread like wild fire

  • Drunkby6

I don't know....I just feel as though people like him try to "downplay" the disease, like it's not a big deal.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

From your link, under HIV timeline >>> https://www.aids.gov/hiv-aids-basics/hiv-aids-101/aids-timeline/
    1984 -

In June, Dr. Gallo and Professor Luc Montagnier, from the Pasteur Institute in France, hold a joint press conference to announce that Dr. Montagnier’s Lymphadenopathy Associated Virus (LAV) and Dr. Gallo’s HTLV-III virus are almost certainly identical and are the likely cause of AIDS.

In plain English, the virus was discovered in 1984. I explained to you that I worked with AIDS patients as a student that same year. I was there when researchers got their data from my patients. Every patient said they contracted the virus from another individual. We asked them for names so the health department could follow up with their partners.

I continued to work with AIDS patients for years as a RN. We all knew that gay men were the missing link to the disease even before the virus was discovered in 1984. That is why gay men were banned from donating blood.

  • ReadingIsFundamental4Real

so he is undetectable, not healthy... right? there are cancer "survivors" who are undetectable but, they have to be checked the remainder of their lives to confirm it hasn't come back; which means they are not healthy in that manner but they can manage.

Y y'all being so ignorant and judgemental?? I'm glad he did it to spread light on the issue. I wouldnt say he's PERFECTLY HEALTHY, but the point I think he was trying to make is that he is living a "normal life" with what can be a deadly illness. You know how many "normal looking" people have HIV walking around silent and silently spreading it?! THE PERSON YOU SLEEPING WITH RIGHT NOW COULD HAVE HIV. This is 2016, people should be more grateful that their promiscuity didn't leave them with HIV and stop being so judgemental. All I can say is I'm so grateful to Jesus, my Lord and Savior (yeah I said it) that I'm not HIV positive, because I've definitely had unprotected sex with more than one guy, so who am I to judge. And who are you to judge this or any other man/woman? Please.

judgmental because it was noted he should have chosen a better reference to his health instead of saying he is healthy or something else that makes you judge people as being ignorant on here?

  • Milani

    True^^^

My brother is a cancer survivor. Had Leukemia when he was a teen and BARELY made it. After a failed bone marrow transplant, I had to donate my stem cells & T cells via transplant 4 times before the cancer went into remission. It was awful, but he survived. He has to get tested every now and then to make sure it doesn't come back.

For now the cancer is still in remission, but that doesn't mean he's healthy...he still has a host of other issues because of it. My stem cells attacked his organs and caused problems, skin issues, he's blind in one eye, etc.

    Undetectable doesn't always equal healthy.

  • lovelygamour

Its based on country too. Cause almost all the cases in africa was from tainted medicine and blood transfusions. While in the usa most adult cases were sex and the youth were transfusions.

  • lovelygamour

Everyone just wants everyone to take it seriously. No one is judging. But no one is going to let it slide. Its costly and life robbing. They have to worry about the general publics germs. So, if you ever saw someone in pain you would take it seriously.

  • barbeez

It's good to give people hope but we have to be careful. This new generation is contracting the disease and that's senseless. They think that a couple of pills will keep them "healthy." AIDS is a deadly disease. I think we need to go back to what they did in the 80s and show people dying from it. When you give AIDS a positive spin...you endanger lives. It should be made clear that it can be deadly and limit your life in various ways.

    Is Magic Johnson "healthy"?

Is this man as happy/healthy as he can be? Are any of us?

I didn't get the impression from him that he is telling people to run and be bug chasers. What I heard him say is you don't have to lay down and die, but you can go on with your diagnosis and live accordingly. Would it had been better for him to say you are doomed? How is he any different from people who have cancer, renal failure, hepatitis, diabetes, heart failure, liver failure, diverticulosis or addiction, food included?

I have said this before, I've met MANY people to test positive. Some were lost along the way because they said no more treatment (and that is their choice). But then there are the others who have been positive since the late 80's, early 90's and are just as fat and happy living life to the fullest and educating others.

Get tested. Protect yourself and others.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

Discovered earlier than that. The five men who had been connected to the flight attendant who frequented the bathhouse was in the very early 80's. There is documentation of the virus throughout the 50's.

On another note, health professionals knew it was primarily 'a gay man's disease', yet many refused to treat them (even though they weren't having sex with them) because they DIDN'T actually know how it was being spread. No one knew.

You're absolutely correct. People in L.A. may get confronted by people in wheelchairs or news reporters for using disabled placards that they were legitimately issued for injuries rendering them disabled.

"This woman entered the gym..." IDK a doctor who treats disabled patients who DOESN'T suggest his/her patient exercises. If it isn't at a gym, it is a with physical therapist. That's the only way to rebuild your body after an accident.

  • Auditor

Diet and exercise is the key. I stay exercising with my crippled ass. If I hit more than 2 days I can really feel the hurt. Pain will drive you insane...mental and physical.

  • Fendi

People would rather take pills than do the work to get themselves better. It's called "pain management" for a reason. There's no cure. You just have to do your best to work though the symptoms. Proper exercise helps.

    I hope you feel better.

  • That’s Interesting

I think it's admirable that he was inspired to let this presumably young woman know that she wasn't alone and could still live a prosperous and happy life. I also think it's brave for him to come out as HIV positive. There's nothing better than living in your truth.

However, people don't die from HIV, they die from AIDS. EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. And it's never pretty. Neither is the work that goes into prolonging HIV, and I'm sure there are some physical symptoms. Young people do not need a cavalier attitude towards catching HIV, especially since it's 100% preventable. HIV is NOT what you want. Period.

The word "perfect" is subjective on its own.

The word "perfectly" is an adverb; adverbs are used to modify or qualify "an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc". The word healthy is an adjective. Perfectly is defined "in a manner or way that could not be better". The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in 1948 (broad review) within their constitution as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity"; "good health" is an invalidated phrase. The word "well-being" has many meanings
/definitions, but not an official definition. One definition is that it is “...a special case of attitude", or how a person feels which is one factor WHO has considered. The definitions vary from subjective to objective including environmental, social, and economical factors etc.

Candidate Poe's remark is both grammatically and technically correct based on the rules of grammar and WHO's definition of health which considers a person's active abilities in maintaining their health.

However, following the context in which Candidate Poe used the word "perfectly" it is both correct and incorrect for Candidate Poe to imply that his health "could not be better". If Candidate Poe had not contracted HIV 18 years ago perhaps he would be in better health. However, after contracting HIV, an infected person's health after having an undetectable HIV viral low, and keeping AIDS at bay, could not be better given the circumstances of a compromised immune system unless there other health complications. This is the process of deductive reasoning.

Perhaps, Candidate Poe should have remarked instead that since his diagnosis he has been leading a healthier lifestyle; as WHO also considers poor health and lifestyle choices, as having unprotected sex or intravenous drug use does apply.

Bren, I share your same type of skin and sensitive. This is the regime that I rotate through.

I use this as a scrub-- "ACURE" Organics Brightening Facial Scrub Sea Kelp, and wash w/ black soap to lighten up spots. The oil control facial moisturizer from the same line is Excellent.

Also, as counterintuitive as it might seem--Have you heard of oil cleaning method? For me, I either use organic coconut oil or castor oil to cleanse. I switch b/w the two. I also do a mask once a week w/ Egyptian clay mask w/ ACV. I do this 2x-3x a week.

The time that my face was not oily was when I was taking this supplement, coral legend.

Are you implying that all "white folks" skin tones/complexions are naturally pale? If so, I will have to respectfully disagree with that implication. Skin tones vary greatly from inherited genes, environment/geographical locations, altered health status, behaviors, etc.

Yes, Caucasian people or white persons can naturally be pale in skin tone but not all. There are Caucasian people who have pale to medium or olive skin tones etc.

I only remarked on the comparison of Candidate Poe's and Senator McCain's likeliness due to your original implication that two could be mistaken for one another. The premise for my remark was that both individuals have very pallid skin tones and that it maybe due to their health complications, not their race origin group.

I have a 'biracial' boyfriend whose mother was biracial, father is white, grandmother was biracial, grandfather was Irish/white, and he has pale skin/tons of freckles, but I also know Caucasian or white persons whose skin tones are naturally not pale. Personal anecdotes aside, people have divergent genes that affect skin tone as well.

I use Moroccan clay...I've tried the Indian and didn't like it.

I come straight home and rinse my face with water. Then later I put the clay on let it sit for about a hour. Then just rinse it off in the shower and follow it up with argan oil. Seems to be helping my skin since I've moved to the desert. Had perfect skin before with just water and Shea butter. Took me damn near a whole year to get it right ?. Now I got acne scars...never had whiteheads so bad in my life! I wear argan oil during the day too...Shea butter now clogs my pores ?.

  • DivineMsM

    Gotta get that soul right.

Not gonna argue over white folks and their raggedy genes.... especially since they're mutants and come from Black folks anyway.

I know an albino whose mother and father are Hershey's color. Wouldn't even know he was Black. He married a white woman and his kids look pure white with white skin, blonde hair and blue eyes, stringy hair, thin lips, and pointy noses. THAT'S how white folks were made...raggedy genes.

I am in agreement that I did not intend to have an at
length intellectual debate on the topics at hand; however, I firmly believe in addressing all matters intellectually. I am a critical thinker.

I don't engage in using colloquialisms, ebonics, slants, personal attack ad hominem fallacies, dysphemisms, etc. to outline a point as I believe it undermines the message; neither do I support it.

I will not expound on any further anecdotes (personal or otherwise) in this thread; nor will I comment on them.

However, again genes or DNA is divergent, and may be latent as it pertains to skin tone.

Using abrasives on your face is never a good idea. Your facial skin is very sensitive and using abrasives can damage your skin and leave it susceptible to bacteria and cause your skin to age faster. My daily cleansing ritual includes a mild cleanser, Cetaphil, which I apply with exfoliating pads from Amazon. Make sure the package says "exfoliating" and the pad has the little ribs on it. Be blessed.

  • Auditor

I have tried all that crap and it leaves my skin dry and horrible looking. I gave up on all that commercial stuff years ago and just wash with water. I don't use baking soda everyday only 2-3 times per week to exfoliate. I've been using it for years with no problems. Even tried that new fad with the sponges...did nothing for me. Cetaphil is the worst for me...I can't use anything with that sodium laufate (sp?)...why I don't use commercial products anymore they all have it.

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

This may be as close as we get to a trophy lol congrats.

  • Low E. TUH!

SO ARGAN IS A LITTLE BETTER AND MORE LIGHTWEIGHT THAN SHEA?

  • Auditor

YES...I've fell in love with it. It's expensive though for a little bottle...that's why I said I would rather use shea butter during the day and argan at night. Plus shea butter is a natural SPF. Argan is lightweight and soaks right into your skin. Should be no clogging pores as the comedogenic scale is 0. https://www.beneficialbotanicals.com/facts-figures/comedogenic-rating.html

  • Low E. TUH!

DIG! THANKS FOR THAT EDUCATION BECAUSE DRY SKIN HAS BEEN A CONSTANT STRUGGLE

  • Auditor

For dry skin...I've tried everything since I've moved to the desert...when I used to use just Shea butter. You need to lock in moisture. Glycerin and lanolin helps. My go to is lanolin right now. I have cut showers down to once a day which sucks cause I like to exercise in the morning. Lanolin has been a BIG help but it comes from sheep. Smell doesn't bother me much but people are different. You can always melt it and add an essential oil to cover up the smell.

  • http://Copblock.org aDingoDrankMyBabies

2 different vitamins shoppes but neither had the scrub? I picked up the oil control and facial toner just to test them out...thanks again??

  • http://Copblock.org aDingoDrankMyBabies

Oh and also, do you use sunscreen? What's a good one for y(our) skin type?? Never been big on using, but have been advised to do so...

  • DivineMsM

You're very welcome! The scrub is available at Tar-Jay! Do you have one nearby? Also, as with any scrub, you don't want to over do it. With our skin type, the oil glands go crazy, and tend to overproduce to compensate.

  • DivineMsM

Yes, this is what I use--La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. I think I go b/w 45 & 60 SPF. This is the only thing I found that will not break me out, or leave that white streaky film once you rub it in (A physical therapist I was seeing turned me on to it).

  • http://Copblock.org aDingoDrankMyBabies

Ordered it online already but maybe I'll stop by Target? Google was telling me the only place near me that carried it was The Vitamin Shoppe?
