hot air balloon crash

A hot air balloon carrying 16 people caught fire and crashed in a field in Texas early Saturday. The accident occurred just before 7:40 a.m. in Lockhart, Texas, about 35 miles south of Austin, Texas.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were at the scene investigating the cause of the crash. An NTSB official said there were no survivors.

Pictures taken at the scene show the charred basket laying on the ground directly below high voltage power lines that span the field.

A propane tank attached to the basket (below the balloon) likely exploded when the basket struck the high voltage line.

A homeowner near the scene told a reporter she was letting her dog out into the yard when she heard several loud pops. She looked up and saw the hot air balloon descending with the basket on fire. The flames were at least 4 stories high, nearly reaching the balloon.

The woman said she occasionally sees hot air balloons in the area.

According to hot air aficionados, hot air balloons are usually flown in the morning when the air is cooler to give the balloon more lift.

Multiple news outlets linked to old videos of past hot air balloon accidents. There is no video of today’s tragedy in Texas.

This did not have to happen. It’s tantamount to dummies climbing Everest and the Himalayas and dying there,it just did not have to happen. There are things that God created, that are meant to be for sight seeing purposes only!

What kind of fool will hop their azz in a BALLOON in the first place? These folks burned to death and for what,I ask?

It’s their fault they were in an accident? Cars can explode, but I can bet if you haven’t driven one you’ve been driven in one at some point(s) in your life. You can walk down the street and get hit by a car if someone loses control. The only thing promised in life is death.

These people were getting to see God’s creation from a different perspective, which is beautiful. Life is meant to be lived, and they were doing just that. Unfortunately, there was an accident and they lost their lives. My prayers and condolences go out to their families.

Sad that it happened. But think that it is ok to be curious. Technological advances and pushing the limits are why we can have this discussion instead of still crawling around in caves like Neanderthals.

  • Wildcat34

    You sound dumb as hell

  • Elevated Soul

Actually i sound REAL as hell…REAL people get exactly what I’m saying….

  • Elevated Soul

Think what you want but it’s stupid to get in a balloon.

  • i troll it like i see it

This is a really old fashioned way of thinking. so how do you plan to keep your judgemental self fully protected 24/7, 365? Please share! These people were out doing something mildly adventurous and disaster occrured, give them a break.

  • Elevated Soul

Chile I’m talking about people getting and depending on flight by way of BALLOON,,,,Life is meant to be live but there is no reason to be stupid.

  • Elevated Soul

My way of thinking is not old fashioned,it’s called COMMON SENSE.Many people would have less problems if they used COMMON SENSE.

These people burned to a crisp and for what,I ask?

  • i troll it like i see it

Ok cool, just stay wrapped in cellophane both physically and mentally, mistake your limited thinking for “common sense.” To each their own….

  • SellieBaby

    Horrible way to go

  • Brownie

That’s what I was thinking. Even a helicopter has a weight limit. This is tragic. I’m STILL not taking my a__ up there.

  • Jen_n_juice

Huh? So you think they depended on flight by way of balloon???? I think you missed Fendi’s point

  • morenYAHdelsur

I understand what you’re saying completely. It just seems like a very unsafe hobby.

May they rest in peace. I’m sure nobody intended for this to happen so it is very unfortunate.

No roller coasters and No hot air balloons for me. Never.

Fendi, you worded this so compassionately. Many blessings your way.

What the hell were 16 ppl doing in a hot air ballon anyway?!!! Mayne prayers for the families of the departed…

  • SaltineCrackers

    Condolences to all the families.

  • Elevated Soul

Oh yeah I’m sure no one intended for it to happen…It’s just stupid and unnecessary for anyone to get into a balloon for any reason.

  • Queen B

Damn me and my bf are on vacation n Cali and I started to get on a hot air balloon but i said nnnnaaahhh!! RIP ?

  • ramosyo

Greed! Knowing damn well the weight was tipping capacity smh I mean what a way to go. I would rather have a heart attack and go quick that watch myself burn alive and fall to my death RIP

  • TaylorFinallyMadeIt

Great way to look at it

  • BrittBrat2005

Omg just went to the hot air balloon race last weekend in Longview Texas..how sad.. and just to think I was about to get my A33 in one, No Thank You..

  • Lisa daniels

    Exactly.

  • Lisa daniels

    Exactly.

  • Lisa daniels

I rather be shot then burnt alive.

  • Lisa daniels

I really don’t understand why so many people were in this balloon. I wouldn’t get in an elevator if it has too many people. I literally will press the closed door button if I am on an elevator by self. Too many accidents happen because folks want to pile in like sardines. Ain’t no way I would have be in that balloon especially with 16 people. Ijs.

  • Fendi

You’re right, there’s no reason to be stupid, yet you keep typing. God bless you.

  • Fendi

Thank you. Blessings to you. I need to get out of my home and live a bit more. I’ve been a victim of my own circumstances for years. I’d hate to finally take a leap one day and lose my life as a result. But if I did/do, then I consider it God’s will and my time on earth was complete. I’m blessed to have gotten the majority of the things I want and to have love in my heart and in my life. Everything else is extra. I would jump out of a plane if I could (prob tandem). If someone thinks that’s stupid, that’s on them. Without taking risks, you’ll never see a reward. I would love to do more to conquer the few fears I have and actually live truly fearlessly. When I see stories like this, that’s just my perspective of how I view the people who died. They were being fearless and enjoying their lives. They don’t deserve to be bashed, but heralded.

  • Kia

God bless there souls. That’s such a terrible way to go.

  • Rhyme and Reason

This is sad, so now I’ll take it off of my list. My question would be how do they avoid hitting power lines, when we have more than ever? So, this is a no!

  • Readytochokemothernatureonout

Many wonder why I endure the 20 hump to NC I’m so afraid of heights but yet cars are worse….prayers for the families

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

All balloon baskets (gondolas) are not the same size, it depends upon the cargo. They come in varying sizes.

    ~balloon enthusiast~

  • the guest

I wouldn’t call the victims stupid, I would call a hot air balloon an unnecessary risk of life.

Some risks are necessary. We may have to walk, we may have to drive, we may have to go to work or the store, we may enjoy running marathons, we may enjoy going to the movies or to a rock concert but although the risk is slim many people have been blown up or shot or hit by a car by doing ordinary things that have proven risk of fatality.

I personally would not enjoy a hot air balloon ride or roller coasters but I do not think people who do enjoy those activities are stupid.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

You can ride just yourself or with a group. The gondolas come in varying sizes. Some go short distances, others have made oceanic flights.

Depending upon what you view as exciting and beautiful, there’s nothing like breakfast for two at sunrise, watching the sun come up on the horizon in a hot air balloon in flight. Nothing.

Also, our family had a member who was apart of the Balloon Corp in the military. We used to CLOWN when we first found out. I MEAN clown. So ignant ?.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

I said this below. It depends on the size of the gondola. All are not the same and hold different amounts. Some can carry a LOT more than 16 passengers. Think of it as you would anything else. Different sizes for different amount of cargo.

  • Unita Lucinda “Lucy” Freebush

Sixteen wanted to see the view?

  • AriesSun

I get what you mean.I would compare this to hitch-hiking.Yeah you can do it,but it’s unwise to do so.

  • Maya

Prayers to their families. I live in Austin which is 35 miles of Lockhart . What a horrific thing to happen.

  • jussaying

Plenty of people have gone hot air balloon riding (myself included) without any issues. Your thinking limits mankind’s innovation. Surely if everyone ascribed to your thought process we’d still be chilling in our caves and modern civilization would cease to exist.

  • jussaying

I’m curious to know why they are riding near lots of high voltage lines? Anytime that I’ve gone it’s always been out in the middle of nowhere and in vacant fields to minimize hitting obstructions. And yes you do have to wake up super early to go in a hot air balloon..

  • jussaying

I don’t know. If you are burnt alive its not the burning skin that kills you, it’s the lack of oxygen and that happens rather quickly. Depending on where you are shot, it might take longer for death to occur.

  • It anytime

    This is sad…RIP
Well, I can scratch that off my “to do” list.

  • Lisa daniels

Again I would welcome a bullet.

  • jussaying

LOL. She said I got no qualms or questions about this here.

RIP…this is on my bucket list.

I’ve went helicoptering twice…volcanoes and Grand Canyon. If I died I would have been happy as a lark!

May those on this trip have been so lucky.

  • Gina

I was just talking to my coworkers about being more adventurous and going on a hot air balloon ride , paragliding.or skydiving but I’ve since changed my mind since reading this…

  • Auditor

    YOLO

  • Becky

Who would get in with 15 people? That was crazy!

  • che’lint

Oh no! I am sorry to read this…what a way to go..may they rest in peace. I am planning a trip to the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It will be for my birthday in October, this year. I was thinking about going on a morning ride. ???Well, it will be a beautiful trip regardless.

  • che’lint

    Where in Cali? ?

  • Transitioning

I have seen them floating pass my house in the early mornings. I’m in the Austin area. I always thought they were too low. The good part my area has underground wiring so no tragedy. I could hear the fire when they want to go higher. I’m not that adventurous.

  • NovemberFling

    Me either.

  • Mystery User

16 people in one basket? Seems like a bit much…

  • Mystery User

Don’t not go because of this! I have a co worker who went to military because he wanted to fly. He said when he got into an Air Plane for training it wasn’t what he expected and the G forces were too much on the body for him to pursue that forever. He said when he got into a hot air balloon, THAT was the sensation of flying he was looking for – he’s never looked back! Owns his own balloons and everything!

  • Mystery User

Winds shift quickly with Balloons, which is why you never should fly near lines and usually you have a truck following you below in case of emergencies.

  • YaYa

I don’t know if I should laugh at this comment but I did

  • jussaying

yeah lol that’s why I said what were they doing near lines during either take off or a landing.

  • SouljaSociety

What an awful way to die…. wow.

“Ok cool, just stay wrapped in cellophane both physically and mentally…” Well put ?

Did these poor people burn to death or were they electrocuted? Please tell me that either way it went very, very quickly. The thought of minutes passing with a group together in flames, screaming, is haunting my dreams. I swear sometimes I think it is necessary to seek therapy after some of these news stories. I used to want to take a balloon ride. No more. God, please comfort these people’s spirits and comfort those they left behind who loved them.
