Baton Rouge police

Multiple Baton Rouge police officers were shot and at least 3 have died during an ambush at a shopping center less than a mile from police headquarters at 9 a.m. Sunday.

CNN reports 7 officers were shot, and 3 are confirmed dead.

There are conflicting reports from multiple news outlets on the number of officers who were shot and killed.

Police say the officers were targeted early Sunday morning.

Fox News reports one suspect is dead and 2 other suspects are on the loose.

A police union has drafted a letter asking the governor of Louisiana to ban open carry weapons for at least a week.

The mass shootings came a day after the last of 5 Dallas cops were buried, and 2 days after Baton Rouge resident Alton Sterling was buried.

Sterling was killed by 2 police officers while selling CDs outside a convenience store.

His death triggered a deranged army reservist to shoot 12 police officers on July 7.

Four suspects were arrested — including a 12-year-old boy — in connection with a Baton Rouge pawn shop robbery on July 12.

One of the suspects told investigators they stole 8 firearms in a botched plot to murder Baton Rouge police officers.
