Lil Kim Royal Reign

An Instagram.com user mistook Li’l Kim‘s 2-year-old daughter, Royal Reign, for a boy due to the child’s closely cropped hairstyle.

Reality TV star Cardi B. rushed to the child’s defense and rudely got the IG user together.

I see why some of you avoid the ‘Gram. The people over there are far too ignorant and uncouth.

Royal Reign was born with a birth defect called congenital ptosis, aka eyelid droop. Congenital ptosis is caused by weakness of the muscles that raise the eyelid or nerve damage.

Nerve damage can be caused during childbirth, such as forceful use of forceps.

Damage can also be due to trauma such as dropping the baby on her head, or brain and nervous system disorders.

Surgery to repair the eyelid droop should wait until the child is 3 or older. But surgery is required as soon as possible in severe cases to prevent lazy eye (amblyopia).

Some children may be required to wear an eye patch to strengthen the eye muscles, or glasses to correct the uneven curve of the cornea (astigmatism).

Sometimes more than one surgical procedure is necessary to correct the drooping eyelid.

This has been your Medical Minute.
