Solange Knowles

Your auntie took a moment to listen to Solange Knowles‘s new album to see what the hype was about.

Yes, the album is introspective, soulful, ambitious… etc. But it isn’t anything we haven’t heard before.

If you like singers who sound like they’re struggling to do too much with too little, you will love Solange’s new album.

It wasn’t a disappointment, but the album doesn’t chart any new ground.

She sounds like Beyonce‘s little sister — and that’s not a compliment.

As usual, my people follow the crowds instead of listening with their own 2 ears.

The entire album gets a B for her husband Alan Ferguson‘s visuals, and Solange gets a C for effort.

Grade C roses

LMAO @ you all falling for this fake deep, fake hipster bullshit. I skimmed through the album. It was just OKAY. Her collabs her horrible choices but the album was not that bad. It sounds like any of these other alternative hipster R&B albums. I will say she has a better voice than her screaming sister.

And the promo photos for the album is terrible. Solange looks like SIRlange in these photos. She needs to return the style she jacked to Janelle Monae, Kesha, and all the other hipster black girls she ripped off of.

If you wanna listen to some real alternative R&B check out Maxwell’s new album, KING, Jesse Boykins and Kaytranada.

  • Tammie Reed

I like her and some of her style in fashion but her music….

I’ve heard one song from her current release. I like it. However, if you spend 4 years working on a release, it better be stellar.

    Got it !

  • SG

I had to listen today in the office to see if it lived up to the hype. Its cool. I like certain songs.

  • Trice

I liked the few songs I heard. All of the negativity is not needed. Just congratulate a sister and move on, or don’t congratulate and move on…

  • semaj24philly

Smh! it’s all subjective when it comes to music so I can’t fault anyone for their opinion but man some people love tearing others down & its sad.No one wants to listen to Maxwell outdated material but that right there is my opinion.Every thing isn’t for everyone.Sad post tho smh.

This dumb azz hateful B wouldn’t know where to start on congratulating her fellow black women. You notice the only black women ms. roses praises are those washed up. And I don’t even mean that as shade but anyone currently doing their thing and successful sandra spews hate unless of course their shading another black person or the black community then she completely cosigns. Ms. Rose doesn’t even have anything decent to say about the first lady. I don’t come to this site anymore but occasionally the truth needs to be spoken.

Dang, Not even a plus on that C? Well I like her and her style of music and her period. She dares to be different. People put too many standards of her living up to her sister and all that fanfare Bey brings, but some people just like normal, low key C kind of music.

  • HoneyyGoodMoneyy_

    i love it

  • Jessy

The album is great! I’ve never listened to a Solange album and said that. Usually, I like a few songs and the rest I never care to hear again. This is different. She found her voice. Her writing and production has improved. It’s good music.

Now, I still find her videos partly cringeworthy tho. It’s half YES and half Napoleon Dynamite dancing to me (lol) but that album gets an A.

  • That’s Interesting

Umm…she can’t sing. That was super lame. Don’t like the song. Don’t like the video. I doubt her purpose is to be the anti Beyoncé but her sister is actually visually and artistically brilliant. She gets no credit for it because people would rather view her as an overrated booty shaker.

  • Buttercup

*lip quiver* Maxwell is wearing the gorilla suit too? I’m glad I didn’t purchase those tickets to see he and Mary yet.

Office as in don’t touch my hair. WINK

Office I use a small speaker are ear phones. NO need to let others hear what I’m listening to, it may be Solange one minute or Mississippi mass choir, Tupac or teachings of the Truth the next. But it time permits and they walk in it just may be Bach D minor.

  • Tiffany Miller

It was a good break from the other more popular norms. How deep can you be when you haven’t struggled by force financially? Any deeper would not be believable. But it can sometimes come across as contrived as if she purposely wants to be different from her sister in reference to the genre.

She ain’t chile. Anon just threw out a bunch of different names. Kesha is a damn pop artist that makes bubble gum rap songs. Jesse Boykins and King are dope, but sonically they should not be compared to Solo. And maxwell’s album…he coulda kept that one. And Kaytranada is a producer sooo. Why we comparing his work to Solange’s IDK…

I think she may have it hard following behind Beyoncé but she tries to carve out her own niche. She just can’t hide her crazy nothing to be jeoulous about. She is fashionable and beautiful . I like her clothes and style way better than Beyoncé and Tina and her is on point!!!! But her medication needs to be adjusted often or she needs to change her diet and try some natural remedies too.

If I can find in all this

I’m gon be who I be
And I don’t feel no faults
For all the lies that you bought
You can try as you may
Break me down when I say

That it ain’t up to you
Gon on do what you do

kesha is not rnb. kelela is electronica. maxwell is neo soul and so is KING… girl bye.

  • jussaying

    lmao i’m like whaaaat…

  • jussaying

bey and solo are completely different. solange is an artist. beyonce is more of an entertainer… both great in their own right so i don’t think they’re comparable at all. if bey was making erykah badu, janelle-esque music [although janelle downgraded herself imho when she released yoga…] it’d be a different story. but i never really took bey as a ‘serious’ musician.

  • Blue

Yeah, ain’t nobody gon tell Solange that when its just you and her in an elevator.

  • jussaying

she is SOOOOO good live. i saw her earlier this year and she did a bunch of covers that i loved. she did drake hotline bling, aaliyah’s rock the boat, and my faves: chaka sweet thing and roy ayers everybody loves the sunshine.

Why don’t you post your exquisite taste of music on here Sandra?

  • Slim Goodie

It’s something different when everything sounding the same. It was refreshing. I dig it.

I love it! Her album is great! People always want to be negative

  • Renee Bee

    Bwahahaha!

  • hi-liter

But why she gotta be fake deep? People kill me trying to define other people just because they don’t see you in a certain way. That’s thier problem. I like the song, and it’s great she has been able to do her own thing opposite her sister.

  • SoChlo

I hate to say it but it wasn’t great. I think people want it to be good so they’re pushing it but it’s not. She sings in a high pitched voice to cover the fact she’s not a strong vocalist. The songs were boring and unremarkable. I had to listen to Landshapes Blue Tac to zap some life into me after listening. I like her style though?

  • zawnn

I’m still stuck on sandcastle… Bay bay ba ba ba ba bae…

  • KcoolMuziq

LOVE the album. It’s VERY eclectic like her style. Plus she sings rings around her sister… Like how she gives zero f—-s about what anyone thinks of her including her sister apparently. Since she beat down her husband in front of her….

  • Nicole

Ok so I have seen mostly awesome reviews on the album from IG….I was at work and decided to listen to what all the hype was about. The album from start to finish was ok I expected better. The beat seemed the same throughout the album I liked the message but I feel like ppl r making this out to b a classic when I didn’t feel that way. Maybe I need to listen again or something to b convinced.

Some ppl like chitterlings others like steak… This album is steak… This ain’t for the chitterling circuit ?… She did a GREAT job? She is Solange not Beyoncé. Let her live ?

  • middleagerant42

I like it and I like the video. I don’t think she is trying to hard. I think this is who she is. I love her style. I just need to hear a few more songs before I buy the album.

  • Yada Yada and etc.

You googled an article? That’s impressive. But these rumors of a joint album have been circulating since Lemonade came out in April, and there are thousands of Google articles that confirm that too. Also, the first time an official release date was put out there was like back in August?

Anyway Solange still got her shine…whether Bey and Jay release an album in Dec or not, her time is now. I’m personally not feeling the album like a lot of people are, but I guess its the right fit for the mood right now.

  • Anji

It failed to challenge my musical ear. The music was pleasant and quite predictable and worked for her small vocal range. Definitely nothing groundbreaking but good for her I guess. I love this style of music, but she needs to take it up a few notches.

  • leapyearpisces

I am very impressed! Awesome. If I had to describe the album in one word-ethereal. Makes me feel like I am in another realm. ??what you say to me????. Love it.

  • mela.reign77

I actually like it… it’s eccentric, soulful and calming. I think people will always see her as Beyonce’s little sister and that alone will set the tone. Her sound is different and I get it.

  • Overpower Radio

I listened to it. Fell asleep at one point. Picked it up where I left off …didn’t find anything I wanted to hear again, but it was indeed a tolerable work of art. It reminds me of an album that wouldn’t have been tight enough to go gold back in the day, but strong enough to earn the artist recognition. Like, there are no real hits on this album. Nothing that moves me to hit that rewind button ..but I did let it play without skipping tracks, even if I was ready to, for the most part.

  • Allihave2say

Sandra you stole that comment off of Rhymes with Snitch.

  • Jusstlookn for Social Grace

thought we agreeded that sandra writes/owns that too.

  • Overpower Radio

I felt that (finally) sounding like Beyonce’s little sister shows growth in her as a vocalist. She finally has an album that I think is worthy of her opening for her sister with.

  • Allihave2say

Say what now? Learn somethin’ new daily.

  • Anji

The higher echelon in the history of music ranks “crazies” as the most successful, whether popular or not. Variations of bipolar and autism rank highest. Drummers have the most insane IQs while being quirky as h^ll. Just the nature of the arts.

  • Anji

Sounds better with visuals. It’s mostly the mix in the production that needs tweaking.. It all had potential. I’m not a Bey fan (musically) at all and can’t see any reason to compare the 2 sisters. Go Solange.!

  • The Truth

Loved her song from way back T.O.N.Y. But wtf is hipster music? She is a neo-soul artist.

  • http://totallifechanges.com/PurTEA VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

Reminds myself that drummers have two drumsticks and that means two potential weapons if they are not properly medicated or having a flashback, hearing voices, auditory hallucinations , psychiatric break etc.

  • http://totallifechanges.com/PurTEA VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

After working at the State Hospital and observing hundreds if not thousands of mental patients I know crazy. Even those that look sane I can sense when it’s time to back the heck up. Even if they are a size two and way 90 pounds I’m backing all the way up. Solange snapped in that elevator and no one did a thing. Jay just blocked her a little. Why? Because she is crazy and that’s how you handle crazy people. You try not to harm them or let them harm themselves , get them some Thorazine ( preferably an injection) and get them evaluated, a medicine adjustment or a psyche hold. Sometimes it takes all three. They probably have an on call doctor for her.

  • DeeFromLA

She has grown a lot as an artist. The idea is to evolve and move in new directions with art and sound. This album reflects the times and actually should be applauded for the boldness of the lyrical content. It’s pretty disruptive and innovative for R&B. Hope she gets Kaytranada, Goldlink or Anderson Paak for a remix of Don’t Touch My Hair. I think it’s FIRE

  • Pamela

  • http://www.batman-news.com NotTheRapperFuture

It’s clearly more about the message that makes everyone love the album so so much. Maybe if you dwelve into the lyrics and not just lazily listen to it you’d understand the deep connection African Americans are feeling to this album. Yeah everybody has a right to their opinion but if you didn’t even mention the meaning and lyrics behind the album in your critique you failed as a critic. I give you a D+ in critiquing albums. Also you use a quote from someone who said they “skimmed” through the album, how idiotic is that. How can you judge how good an album is by skimming? I’m not sure what you do as a living but critiquing albums is not your strong suit.

  • Sriracha In My Bag,

I do think that some people are just on the bandwagon and haven’t even fully listened to the album, but LOVE IT because they feel like they’re suppose to-for the culture..lol.

I like that she’s different and I like the message, but I’m not about to say she just snatched my edges and soul with her album..lol. I like that she’s in her own lane though and I like a few songs on the album. I will say that I think that Bey is influenced by Solange’s quirkiness.

Never really followed this girl but in all honesty it is a great album it’s one of those that the house is clean, the fall Breeze is coming in and your frying chicken give it a try Sandy

  • Lola

Whoever wrote that review clearly has different taste in music.. Because you can’t compare Solanges’ music to Maxwell smh. She sounds nothing like Beyoncé … Her album was great.. Everything isn’t for everybody .. Some black people are so quick to judge and critizize black artists who don’t try to fit in .. It’s so ignorant

I swear I feel the same way! I saw all the great comments on Instagram, so I listened to the sample of the ENTIRE cd and nothing moved my Princed-crazed azz. So I listened again, still nothing. So, Solonge ain’t for everyone. And she does look kinda ugly in that shot with the hair clips. Sorry…

I like amel. Maybe I will give Solonge a third try…it just didn’t grab me.

The “What’s Next” billboards are promos for the next season of America’s Next Top Model not a Jay-Z and Beyonce album. Hence why the article on Thatgrapejuice has a question mark in the title and doesn’t make a definitive statement. You’re reaching…..

  • Lovelove

I do applaude her for her effort…she means very well.

  • EYESOFLAURAMARS

  • TheWildChild

After seeing her video snippets on IG, which reminds me of an adolescent teen acting out. Maybe had I not seen them, I could actually listen and like the song. ? ?? But, what is on my Spotify #rotation is Common’s #LoveStar ?? which samples MTume’s “You, Me & He” song.

  • http://www.gogirlastrology.com ThaGuru

Love the album. Just what the world needs. Original, creative, and conscious music. Solange sounds like Solange and if you listen to what she’s saying she put her heart into it. The music is composed beautifully and even if she isn’t the strongest vocalist she lets us take a ride with her that is great for the black soul. It’s a healing experience. Mary J Blige, Nina Simone, and Keyshia Cole weren’t always everyone’s cup of tea but God gives all of us a voice and we have the right to express it any way we like. I happen to like the sound and the visuals are beautifully constructed.

  • kekeb

Stop it! I LOVE Solo!!! I think people subconsciously compare her to Beyoncé hence all the negativity. If she weren’t Beyoncé’s sister, y’all would embrace her her different style, like Janelle Monae.

  • kekeb

That song was AWESOME! my white coworker LOVED that song!

  • AListDiva29

I’d listen if she didn’t seem to have such a horrible attitude!

  • Lena Justin

I have ‘Cranes in the Sky’ and ‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ on serious repeat. Everything else on the album is just, blah.

  • Munchosgirl

Thank you, this has always been Solange. I love the album, even the interludes, which make the music more appreciated.

This mess looks fake and unauthentic and the video is weird. I couldn’t even take her thin vocals enough to listen to the whole song. Sorry, she’ll always be an underground artist which she seems to be fine with. She certainly doesn’t need the money.

  • IBJuliet

I agree with auntie. This album isn’t anything we haven’t heard before and Solange is too contrived. She just comes across a gimmicky to me.

  • Shade Fest

I love the fact that she has interludes on the albulm…the last time I heard a good good album like this was The Miseducation of Lauyrn Hill…that’s just my opinion.

  • @djangothegod
  • JayCey

she doesnt sound like “Beyonce’s little sister”. They both have soulful voices but sound n have completely different styles. Her music isnt pop…It isnt for the popular or mainstream ears. Its for people who enjoy this genre of music, jazzy sounds, easy listening, and the message being displayed.

  • TOOREALFAYA

Her sound is okay…but every damn song sounds the same…n what the fluck is Lil Wayne doin on that collab??? He sounds like a cheap azz Young Thug…Its alternative R&B soul….why would she have him on the song….it sounds like two different songs when he comes on…I can’t… I like how her sound is mature and soulful..but there is literally no excitement in any of the tunes…

  • Rhyme and Reason

I finally got a chance to listen to Solange’s whole new album, and I was totally impressed! Yes, she took a whole lot of identifiable influences from Amel Larrieux, Badu, Tweet, Janelle Monae, Minnie Riperton, Denise Williams, The Emotions, En Vogue, smooth jazz artists, you name them! As Aiko Jhene, Andra Day, Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae also did! She meticulously gathered (over a long period of time) her ingredients and select cuts, seasoned, brine, marinated, harvested and gave birth to a beautiful piece of work! Some will think it’s not a big deal, but for black music it is [what is out there, really]! She didn’t pander to radio, didn’t try to make music to chart [definitely not], but people are loving it’s laid-back tone, in an age where many people can’t stand slower tempo music, but she keeps it jumping quietly with backstory music and interludes that don’t disrupt the flow of the music!

Cranes in the Sky is what so many go through or find relatable, and other joints that makes this CD relevant track for track! I’m not into the black movement aspect of this project, but for those who are, great! Real empowerment is self-empowerment (education, volunteerism, not trashing your own hood or people, and financial boycotts (the money always talks). I believe this CD brings something potent for a variety of listeners, not everyone, of course! She found her inner (soul-sound) and studio voice, mission statements, and a paved lane beyond all her other past musical efforts! Congratulations!!!

  • God is working on me!

There is a market for her music, I’m not part of that market but I wish success with this album.

  • randbee

Welp it’s #1 on the billboards so that “hype” was beneficial.

Wow, don’t touch my hair was an amazing song and a powerful statement. I love her voice…in comparison to beyonce and her howling and belting solange’s voice is like a smooth silky glass of chocolate milk. And I love cranes in the sky. Anyhow….solange is a way better, creative, actually talented artist that I can take way more seriously than beyonce.

  • luvpolitics

  • SA ThirtyThree

Or Kung foo fighting in the elevator

  • justatwist

I don’t see what all the hype is about Solange album! It is not the worst thing I have heard but, certainly not worth all this hoopla that it’s causing! One thing I know that solange can’t do is dance in her videos it a obvious to everyone that she can’t dance at all! The facial expressions in her videos are not very alluring either but, I must give her props with the fact that her voice is a lot nicer than her sister Beyonce whose voice is in my opinion one note, sounds the same in every song she sings!

  • justatwist

I agree she is a weirdo & she is the type of black that hates all white people she gave an interview about this rude white woman who was sitting behind her at a concert and she kept making rude comments because solange kept standing up in front of the woman dancing (which wasn’t good ) and blocking the woman’s view solange insisted the woman had a problem with her doing this because solange is black it didn’t cross her mind that she might have been blocking the view!

  • justatwist

See what I mean she hates white people!
