Chicago is reeling from the gang-related triple shooting that left a 2-year-old boy and his 26-year-old uncle dead on Tuesday. Lavontay White, Jr. and his unnamed uncle were passengers in a maroon sedan driven by 20-year-old Breunna Devonte.
Devonte and her boyfriend were driving and listening to rap songs by Lil Durk and Chief Keef when another car cut them off in an alley in Lawndale on Chicago’s West Side.
Devonte later told police a gunman jumped out of the car, approached the passenger side door and sprayed the vehicle with bullets.
The shooting was live streamed on Facebook.
Little Lavontay and his uncle were each hit in the head. The man died at the scene. Lavontay was revived by paramedics, but he was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 2:43 pm.
Devonte, who is four months pregnant, was hit once in the abdomen. She ran to her boyfriend’s apartment nearby to summon help.
Chicago police confirmed the Facebook video was related to the triple shooting. Facebook deleted the video early Wednesday.
Witnesses in the area told police they heard 10-15 gunshots in rapid succession at around 1:30 pm.
Devonte was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where she is listed in stable condition. Her unborn baby survived the shooting.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is confident the gunman will be apprehended.
“We have very promising leads, we have video,” Johnson said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll find him.”
