Cedric Anderson

Police say Monday’s shooting at a San Bernardino, Calif. elementary school was a domestic dispute between a man and his estranged wife.

Investigators say Cedric Anderson, 53, wasn’t targeting students when he walked into a classroom at North Park elementary and shot Karen Smith to death.

Anderson, 53, then turned the gun on himself inside the classroom.

Smith, 53, was a special education teacher at the school.

Also shot was student Jonathan Martinez, 8, who later died. Another student, a 9-year-old boy, was wounded in the shooting. He is listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

Police say the boys were standing behind Smith when they were shot by stray bullets.

15 students and two adult aides were in the class at the time of the shooting at 10:27 a.m. CST.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said Anderson followed procedures by signing in and showing his ID at the school’s main office. He then proceeded to the classroom where he opened fire without saying anything.

Chief Burguan said there are no metal detectors at the school.

Police executed a search warrant at Anderson’s Riverside, Calif. home on Monday afternoon.

In a Facebook video in February, Anderson professed his “love” for Smith, whom he married a month earlier on January 28, 2017.

“What I love about my wife? Oh boy, she is making me really happy,” Anderson said. “She knows when to ignore me. That makes a happy marriage.”

He also posted videos and photos on Facebook taken during their honeymoon in Sedonia, Arizona.

Despite their amorous imagery on Facebook, the couple separated after only 3 months of marriage. They both leave behind adult children from previous relationships.

If Smith had done a simple background check, she would have discovered Anderson had a long criminal history that included domestic violence, weapons and drug charges.

Anderson has ties to Georgia. He divorced a woman in Gwinnett County in 2011. They both had mutual restraining orders.
