Shanta Jordan

Police in Bridgeport, Connecticut are calling Shanta Jordan a hero after she dived in front of a speeding car to save a boy she didn't know.

CCTV footage of the horrific accident shows a woman walking along a sidewalk ahead of two boys.

Seconds later, Jordan comes into the frame as she threw her body in front of the second boy just as a car barreled toward him.

The car struck both Jordan and the boy, crushing them against a stone wall. They survived the impact but they were hospitalized with multiple fractures and internal injuries.

The other boy was also hit by the car and knocked to the ground but he escaped without injury.

The boy's frantic mother assisted her other son off the ground before running for help.

Police say Jordan's quick thinking and bravery saved the boy's life.

She realized she didn't have time to push him out of the way of the speeding car so she sacrificed her body for his by absorbing the impact of the crash.

“She is a heroine. That’s what she is,” said Bridgeport Police Chief A.J. Perez. “She is a great person, and she is an asset to this community.”

“If she did not step in, the child would be in direct contact with the motor vehicle against the wall and most likely, he would have perished,” said Perez.

Police and local leaders will honor Jordan at a ceremony at City Hall next week.

“Amazing woman, she is so brave for that,” Jordan’s friend and neighbor said. “If it wasn’t for her, that boy would not made it.”

Doctors initially feared they would have to amputate the boy's legs, but they were able to avoid amputation.

The driver of the car was also hospitalized. He faces several charges, including reckless driving.

Key to the City, NAACP Image Award, Cover of Essence, Meet Oprah, Tea with the Queen of England, invitation to the White House... this sister deserves every recognition and every blessing and then some.

I'm so happy she and boy will recover fully. Blessed.

  • V Dubb

All of that...but why can I only think of beating the drivers ass? Unless you were having a a seizure(which you shouldnt be driving)?!?!?!?! Ugh!

  • Dani B.

Thank GOD they are both alive!. Praying for their total/speedy recovery...NOW, to this "driver" of the vehicle. Was there some type of medical issue?, was it on PURPOSE?, or just can't drive!!!!? What was it?!!!

  • RespectSelf

It actually does if you pause the video. Her arms were in a motion to suggest she was throwing her body more in front of the vehicle than away.

  • RespectSelf

Wow that was very hard to watch, but I glad that were both able to make it out alive. wow! You really never know what life may bring you. Might I add, that the driver would have had to get a beat smh.

  • NeverSurprised

My prayers go out to them both.

There are many recorded cases of women doing things like this -- selfless, life-endangering acts to save a child . Running back into burning buildings, the case of the Brooklyn woman a few years ago who stepped in front of gang fire to save children. Women do this instinctively because of our mother instinct, even when the child is not our own. It is one of the many ways in which we are different from men, and why simply putting a dress on a man does not make him a woman.

Does anyone know if there is a crowdfunding account set up for this SHEro?

  • NeverSurprised

It would be good if a local car dealership donated a new car, a local developer donated a new home, a local supermarket donated a year of free groceries, etc. These are just some of the many ways in which she should be rewarded.

  • Noirluv45

Stories like these remind me that there are still good and decent people in the world. Negativity takes over the news, so this is refreshing. I'm so happy the both of them are okay.

  • Quitedeliteful

Now you know he needs a good and proper beat down!!! Driver needs to be charged with attempted murder or something...

  • Mbailey

    THAT woman is amazing.

  • millz

Na not the White House... the Obamas house ?

  • Reina1718

    So scary.

  • growingviolet

You could probably send cards, flowers, etc. to the police department there and they'd get them to her hospital or home. I haven't seen a Go Fund Me for her yet.

  • Wile E. Coli

    H E R O.

  • Diva4lyfe

OMG if that was my son I would forever be indebted to her. She is some awesome. God Bless her for being in the right place at the right time. She is truly a HERO. May they both have speedy recovery. I will tell you God keeps his Angels nearby. You will never know that your Angel is right there at all times

  • Chicagowise

    A real Wonder Woman!

  • Lolalao

  • MistaO

Yes, she was confused and panicked, as anyone would be with mear milliseconds to react. That's why from what I see she wasn't trying to necessarily protect that boy. She just turned in the wrong direction..

  • MzTee

Now this is news I enjoy reading about.

    Thank goodness everyone is safe.

  • V Dubb

    Yessssss.....pisses me off.

  • Monique B

    Attempt Murder!!

  • Clopretty

Wow!! Simply Heroic! You can see in her face her only concern was saving that child! God bless her heart!

  • Nita

Wow she is amazing for that. I'm glad they are ok, God bless her.

  • FallenOne

Now lets see tge gofund me for her with millions raised? Anyone breaking they neck to help her the black herione?

  • BlueHousen

There is a lot of debate as to whether she tried to save him, save herself, or incidentally appearing as she is saving herself with the child incidentally behind her. This is from people all over the place, not just here in the US. So what's the real story. My question is, why would she Not jump to her right to safety as the car is coming from the left right at the kid. If you take it frame by frame, it looks like she is running at the car. When heroes do things, self preservation goes out the window. To me what she did was heroic. Thankfully neither died but crushing traumatic injuries are tricky, so pray for them.

  • Informed

It appears that you are joking or an idiot.

  • Queen B

Im so happy everybody is alive and will heal!! Thats y I always mk sure my child is on the opposing side of traffic next to me....i can take a hit before she can

  • VM

Yes, I would like to send some appreciation her way.

  • VM

Thank you so much for this tip, this didn't cross my mind.

  • bhavana

I know that you mean well, but it's not safe to give an address online like that. There are too many crazy nuts out there.

  • VM

Thank you for understanding my intent and I agree that there are some dangerous people out here.

  • DoctorRemulak

The video shows she actually ran past him while trying to get out the path of the car. My screenshot shows the truth. I don't blame her, but there was nothing heroic here. I will file this one under "fake news."
