Facebook math test

The creator of a math challenge that is sweeping Facebook claims that only one in 1,000 people can guess the two possible answers. Your auntie must be one in 1,000 because I guessed the answer on my first try.

The math challenge is very simple if you don’t think of it as a standard addition problem.

The test, created by Go Tumble, is sparking heated debates all over the world, according to London’s Daily Mail.

Can you guess the very simple answer?

Update: For those of you who had trouble answering this simple math test, the answer is below. To those of you got the answer: you are one in 1,000!

    It’s pretty simple.

    Add 1 + 4 = 5
    Add 2 + 5 to 5 = 12.
    Add 3 + 6 to 12 = 21
    Add 8 + 11 to 21

    Answer is 40

    1+4 (1x)= 5
    2+5 (2×5= 10+2) =12
    3+6 (3X6= 18+3) = 21
    8+11 (8X11= 88+11) = 96

    (3 is the number to be added to the 1st number)

  • Ain’t Misbehavin

    I came up with 40

  • RespectSelf

    I can see 40 being the answer… but 96 makes more sense because you can apply the same math for all of them even with the 1=4=5. Where as if 40 is the answer then there is an assumption that nothing special was done with 1+4=5.

  • JV

    I got the same number, but in a different way: Instead of addition, I turned it in to a multiplication question. Add plus one to the second variable. So originally it is
    1 + 4 = 5
    2 + 5 = 12
    3 + 6 = 21
    8 +11 = ?

    I read it as

    1 x 4 (+1) = 5
    2 x 5 (+1) = 12
    3 x 6 (+1) = 21
    8 x 11 (+1) = 96

  • Miami8981

    Nah, I wasn’t referring to Rob. I was referring to one of her sidepieces that side all he had to do was buy her some wings and she was busting it open. But yeah, Rob’s mama and ‘nem probably repossessed all her shit.

    BTW, what is white liver? Never heard that term before.

    (3 x 6) +3= 21
    (8 x 11) +8= 96

    The answer can either be 40 or 31….
    To get 31
    1+4= 5
    2+5= 12
    3+6= 21
    8+11= 31
    The missing numbers are 7, 9, and 10. The answers go up by these numbers…
    5 + (7) =12
    12+ (9)= 21
    21 +(10)= 31

    I got 96

  • Overpower Radio

    The answer is not 40. It’s 96.

    It’s not asking us what is 14 + 26. It’s asking what’s 8 + 11.

    There are two conclusions you can draw based on the SEQUENCE of the first 3 statements.

    THE FIRST CONCLUSION: For each line (on the addition side) you add one to each value on the following statement. Starting at 1 + 4 …the next line is 2 + 5 …the next is 3 + 6 [keep going, because this same pattern leads to 8 + 11]. {4 + 7}, {5 + 8}, {6 + 9}, {7 + 10}, and finally {8 + 11}.

    THE SECOND CONCLUSION: When you divide (the number to the right of the = sign), by (the first number on the addition side), the result also goes up sequentially, by 1.

    where 1 + 4 = 5 { 5 / 1 = 5 }
    where 2 + 5 = 12 {12 / 2 = 6}
    where 3 + 6 = 21 {21 / 3 = 7}

    …now that you have 2 working sequences that apply to math logic, keep going until you get to 8 + 11:

    The answer to 4 + 7, will have to be the number that you can divide by 4 to get “8” as a result (to continue the sequence) “32”.

    where 4 + 7 = 32 {32 / 4 = 8}
    where 5 + 8 = 45 {45 / 5 = 9}
    where 6 + 9 = 60 {60 / 6 = 10}
    where 7 + 10 = 77 {77 / 7 = 11}
    ..and finally,
    where 8 + 11 = 96 {96 / 8 = 12}

  • Overpower Radio

    You’ve missed something in the way you’re looking at it. I’m trying to figure out how you developed this. The answer is 96. The thing that’s wrong with your 31 answer, is you’re following a pattern where 5 (plus the addition table in the following line) + 7 = 12 …then 12 (plus the next addition table) + 9 = 21 …………but then you broke the pattern. Where do you get “10” to add to “21” to make it equal “31”?

    8 + 11 = 19

    I posted the solution above.

  • Overpower Radio

    You were right. The answer is 96.

  • Dallas Kennedy

    ????? ya be going in on mfs but cant do simple math… That why ya so mad…the slow mf always angry… Called math…og math. Binary … All the left plus all the right equals all the numbers ?

So if u got this wrong them pasty face chalky casper the ghost poof cracka be gone scaley skin like dried up rolled glue less than melanin Poppin n the sun folks done got u…. I’m a day late but a MF never a dollar short ???

  • Lady

    It’s 96 it’s 8 x 12=96 they are multiplying the number after it.

  • Overpower Radio

    I’m not with the 40 crew. “8 + 11” is not a random number. If the objective was to get a running total, “8 + 11” wouldn’t follow the sequence of the addition side of the first 3 statements. It would also be pointless for the first 3 statements to be in sequence.

    If I were a teacher, I wouldn’t fail the 40s, but that was an easy way out. Analyze the data.

    I don’t think people realize that this is one of those questions that allows for multiple solutions based on right brain/left brain thinking. I looked at all the numbers being added in each equation to find that the numbers 7,9 and 10 aren’t being added. However, the product of every line goes up by these numbers.
