Rihanna's Movie 'Valerian' Disappoints In 5th Spot

Girls Trip

Queen Latifah's female-bonding movie Girls Trip landed the #2 spot at the box office this past weekend. The movie about 4 girlfriends taking a trip to the annual Essence Music Festival in New Orleans raked in $31.2 million.

Universal's Girls Trip, which also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish, beat out Spider-man: Homecoming for the 2nd spot on 1,539 less screens.

Coming in a disappointing 5th was Cara Delevingne and Rihanna's Sci-Fi action thriller Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. War for Planet of the Apes edged out 'Valerian' for the #4 spot.

War film Dunkirk was the #1 movie in America this past weekend with an estimated $50.2 million in ticket sales.

Despicable Me, Baby Driver, The Big Sick, Wonder Woman and Wish Upon rounded out the top ten movies at the box office this past weekend.

  • Kanyade

is it just me or...is Rih...looking fabulous???

Girls Trip - heard it was great.

Valerian - plan to see on DVD.

Dunkirk - just talked about it with a coworker; love Christopher Nolan but I'ma miss this one. Not surprised it was #1.

  • Blaque Mahogany

Is Valerian really Rih's movie? I have seen several trailers that didn't even have her in it.

I don't think Rih is fat but ummm she is getting thicker. In the face. Like a pregnant person.

  • Kanyade

It's Luc Besson's film but Rih's has a part so it's "hers", just as it is Cara's and that other dude and oh yeah, Clive Owen of all people. Rih's the biggest name/star...outside of the director.

  • ThisIsWhat40LooksLike

Saw Girls Trip this weekend with my favorite cousins and we loved it!!
    Go see it!!??

  • sunni_daze

And that dress is not helping.

  • Dowoop

I was thinking the same thing

  • sunni_daze

I'd go see this again. It was really funny.

  • Hell_On_Heelz

Glad to hear the movie did well. Hopefully I'm able to see it this week. I've heard it was extremely funny. Rihanna is pregnant.

  • MissHarlem

Can't wait to see my wife tomorrow on the big screen ?. Going to watch it with my mom when I hit up Miami tomorrow. My bestie ?

  • ???TheRider???

IMO - Either RiRi is pregnant or she cut out alcohol and/or drugs.

  • Cheese eggs

I don't think that she's pregnant. She is just in denial about her real size.....happens to all of us. ?

  • Mojo2

    ? RiRi looks pregnant. !!!!!

  • Faithz

Rih sure is looking preggo. The amount of money spent on a movie don't mean Jack. The Movie Rih is in for a few seconds was a high budget film,
and a while ago that Movie Slumbdog, Won all the Accolade, and it wasn't a high budget movie. I'd say to Rih and Cara keep right on plugging away
It's not over until it's over for them!!!!

  • Rayne

    She's carrying high.

  • YES I SAID IT…

This was a really good movie. I plan to go see it again

  • Darkandlovely617?

    Hey doll ?????
    Have fun!

  • ThottyPippen

The only good reviews for that Valerian movie was Rih's part. Cara just doesn't do it for me as an actress.

  • ThottyPippen

I'm so glad Girl's Trip went well. So many critics preemptively thought is was gonna flop because its white sister film, Rough Night, did. Hollywood needs to quit undervaluing how black movie goers (particularly black women) can make or break a film's profit (*cough* Birth of a Nation *cough*)

  • ThottyPippen

Also, how many times are ya'll gonna call Rih pregnant...LOL. She's been pregnant since the NBA playoffs, according to ya'll. She just dresses in questionable outfits and the next day she'll wear a crop top or some ish..lol.

  • Shira Harding-James

    Good for them!

  • JerseyMom

Did you see Girls Trip, Sandra? It was actually really good. I enjoyed it.

  • Alisa

    She might be pregnant

  • Hell_On_Heelz

After I turned 25, I was in denial. Now, I'm in that gym??

  • Jen_no_juice

    Is Rihanna pregnant??

  • Jen_no_juice

I saw it twice myself. May go a 3rd

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

I saw Girls Trip with some of friends from church. I enjoyed it and Ms. Haddish really stole a lot of the scenes. I will warn the Roses this movie is full of cursing, and some vulgarity. There are ALOT of cameos in the movie and because it's set Essence Fest there are a lot of singers on the stages and in the scenes. I laughed with all my friends , except one who is uptight. The movie can be raunchy but overall it was good....

  • Diva_woman

I want to go watch this movie again. I had such a good time seeing this movie. I have not laughed that hard in a long time.

  • Diva_woman

This is a good warning because the movie is raunchy for sure but it was hilarious

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

If she isn't her breast are ! I think they are having a coming out , gender reveal party , the twin girls are here and ready to be seen! Rihanna looks all right though !!!

  • Miany

Enjoy the trip and the movie!

  • BacktolurkingIgo

    Enjoy.

  • BacktolurkingIgo

Me and my babies are going to see it.

  • MissHarlem

    Thanks hun ?

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

Not for the faint of heart .....

  • V Dubb

It's not Rihannas movie she was just in it. And I'll watch before I do Girls Trip

  • Lisa daniels

Sandra, do you ever get tired?

  • Miany

I liked girls trip just because.. I really did not find it all that funny to me (i like my comedy subtle not really obvious) but, I related to the movie. My girls and I saw tid bits of us in each character so it was def worth the experience. I am glad they did well. I am glad they shiiied on the lil yt girl movie because #BlackGirlMagic

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

This movie is definitely for grown folk.... even if you were visually impaired the cursing is off the chain. It is profanity laden as well as a little bit of frontal involving a man. And before you ask it isn't who you think or MAY want it to be... Although you may get a taste of chocolate ...????

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

Girls Trip?! Two of those "girls" are middle-aged and one of the old biddies is a lesbian, pretending to be interested in men. This movie is too much of a stretch for even my fertile imagination.

  • Platoon

Another stupid movie to dumb down our people. All of them are a bunch of sell outs.

  • Quitedeliteful

I wasn't going to see this movie but I've heard nothing but good reviews. I'll check it out this weekend...

  • Dr. P

I wonder when Rihanna is going to announce her due date? The gender? #ponders

  • Cheese eggs

24 hr fitness in the house?

  • Noirluv45

As much hype as I'm hearing about "Girls," I wait for it to come out on Netflix or On Demand.

  • Noirluv45

Regina was on Trevor's show talking about penises. LOL!

  • Please Stop The Madness

Awe MAN I wanted them to be NUMBER ONE. The movie was PACKED. and then it was packed from previous show based on the folks coming out and in the incoming one based on the amount of folks waiting. Get em girls! Hopefully next week

  • Please Stop The Madness

Actually in the movie they were all degreed professional women who met...in college. But okay. You keep living with that stick up your ass.

  • my view

    You think so?

  • my view

its a dang on movie relax

  • Dr. P

When's the last time you saw her stomach??? She's been walking around looking full and satisfied for weeks now and her face is fuller. She be pregnant.

  • my view

what the heck does their personal life have to do with a dang on movie? i'm sure you have supported worst stupid

  • ?Royalty?

    Or Redbox.

  • Judas & GOD

    people are sensitive ..lol

  • C Mack

....go see the movie before you try to label. What an irrespnsible comment.

  • C Mack

"Girls" as in friends. Smh. QL may be a lesbian, but she's an actress. Please tell me your comment wasn't serious

  • RICHIE_RICH

    How so?

  • Platoon

The image above and the preview is all I need to make my comment. Plus, reading the reviews here confirms my thoughts.

  • RICHIE_RICH

Wow it's just the a movies!!!

  • Simone

Girls Trip - Not my kind of movie. I prefer Low Down Dirty Shame or Set It Off Jada. Dunkirk was beautifully shot, acted and written. The best war movie of all time without being overly long. A masterpiece and will receive Oscar nominations for sure. See it in Imax!

  • Platoon

So a degreed person validates what? I can find more non-degreed folks that can contribute more value than thesw characters in the movie.

    You're sensitive to opinions?

  • C Mack

So a picture and other people's thoughts are enough for you to make a judgment. Cool

  • Platoon

Lol. There you go with the "judgement" word. I shared an opinion. Intolerant to opinions?

  • Platoon

Profanity, hyper sexualized images and jokes. 4 women lusting over a male's member is what our young sisters and brothers need to be seeing? Just my opinion

  • C Mack

Not intolerant. I just think it's somewhat unfair to make statements about a film that you have not seen. There is a lot of positivity in the film. The promotion of self-worth, sisterhood, and balancing all aspects of life are all prominently featured in the movie.

I'm not a Jada Pinkett fan at all, so I went into the movie with negative expectations, but I was surprised

  • ChocolateChick84

Not just college but an HBCU at that. Like, what are they talking about sellout!?

  • Renee26

Ri Ri's dress is a hot red mess...it's poorly made. The top part wouldn't even fit a flat chested woman, it's too short up top and the straps can't even go over the arms properly....it looks like she squeezed into a too small night gown but it's so big it's swallowing her at the same time...No No No

  • Platoon

That's your opinion. Rat poison contains 3% poison and 97% food. What you listed is minute compared to what else the movie promotes.

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

Regina proves black don't crack ! She is beautiful , I know she had makeup on but she has aged well. On the other Kate who played her manager in the movie is aging in the forehead area rapidly! I sw a clip of Tiffany Haddish on Jimmy Kimmell and she is very real and has traits like her character! She is like the best friend you can't contain at a get together!?

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

A character, even on film, needs to be believable. Middle-aged women acting like sorority girls, is ridiculous. And don't get me started on blatant homosexuals playing straight roles!

  • Please Stop The Madness

Im non degreed. My owndamnself. So it validates not shit with me personally. But I dont shake a stick at it. By far. Those who have one. But lets be real here. A lot of young folks DONT make it. A lot do. But its a whole entire population that do not. If they did then groups etc such as UNCF which has been up and running since the 1940s, would not exsist. A movie showing unity and sisterhood amongst LONG TIME FRIENDS who MET at an HBCU is not all that negative. Its a movie about letting your hairdown and LIVING and having a good time while STILL living up to your responsiblities. In fact, Regina Hall WORKED the whole movie. That was her storyline. She was at work.

Once again. You keep living with that stick up yourn now.

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

Grown women shouldn't refer to themselves as girls. The best role QL ever played, was in Set it Off. She was believable because she portrayed her true self.

  • Jen_no_juice

Right! That ain't no push up

  • Platoon

Y'all don't know how to handle an opinion. That's very sad. Good day

  • Coco

And the fact that cara keeps getting these big roles in high budgets movies while her acting sucks. I love Rihanna but I'm not seeing this.

  • ThottyPippen

Was NEVER my intention to see the movie..lol. I'm sure someone will have Rih's performance part on Youtube or something..lol.

  • ThottyPippen

I loved Girls Trip. I'm glad that Tiffany's character was the only over the top character though, because it would have been TOO MUCH. I'm glad the other characters were more subtle to balance her's out (probably how a lot of friend circles are in real life).

  • C Mack

It's a term of endearment. You know that.

  • hottlanta

Or the black beauty salon near you.

  • my view

smh at how silly you are

  • hottlanta

Yep that is what they need to be seeing and what is wrong with that. As if going to church and reading the Bible is safe. Just ask the Eddie Long and Catholic church victims. Don't get me started on the Mormons with their child brides and 13 wives.

  • my view

    And neither do you.

  • hottlanta

Middle age. What age constitutes middle age. Ain't nothing more sickening than a bunch of middle age men acting like frat boys talking about back in the day I was the man etc, etc, and couldn't get that thang up with a plunger. Got their stomach hanging out all over their belt looking like molten lava and shaking like jello when they walk.

  • hottlanta

If it is raunchy I am all in. But where I live it sold out quick.

  • Platoon

    lol. ?????

  • Platoon

The scriptures are safe. Can't blame the scriptures when the wrong people are handling it.

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

I agree with you. My comments were not restricted to women. Im an equal opportunity offender.

  • Smith Jane

I think I understand the point that that poster is trying to make. When they say "negative"(because I have a similar opinion - or rather "bias" when it comes to these types of comedies), they tend to be one dimensional, lacking in both depth and context. If I had to guess (& the reviews support my assertion) Tiffany probably acts like a real archetype off of one of the L&HH or ROH franchises - ghetto, uncouth, ratcett, loud etc - the other characters probably reenactment the same roles we've seen in the Best Man/Act like a lady etc., with a predictable storyline. Also, having a degree (particularly one from an HBCU) has not one damn thing to do with intelligence or (ratchet/ghetto) behavior. I don't know if it's because this type of comedy has been oversaturated (from yt ppl) or what, but I'm just bored of seeing the same predictable storylines with the same type of character archetype. It's like they only allow certain films to be created and the ppl who play them have no depth and require little to no acting.

I'll still support ?? It this weekend but I think I know how the other poster feels

  • hottlanta

Just like profanity, hyper sexualized images, jokes and lusting after a dyck is safe as well. It is just how people handle it.

  • Noirluv45

Yep, you got that right! Oh, I first saw Tiffany years ago on that show, "Whose Got Jokes" and she was and still is hilarious! I love her.

  • SunRiseBlossom

I been thinking about cancelling my Netflix account.. they do not have good movies (my opinion).

  • nekkkyj

Girls trip preview looks boring i won't waste my time going to see it

  • Full Monty

    Riri pregnant than a mug.....

  • ?Royalty?

LOL! They will have it before everybody else.

  • Please Stop The Madness

Thanks for this dissertation. I totally appreciated it.

Folks kill ME. Yall dont be liking NOT shit. The comedies are "one dimensional, lacking in both depth and context". Umm issa C-O-M-E-D-Y. We dont need anymore slave movies. Black sports biopics are played. No more civil rights movies. WTF DO YALL LIKE? But I bet you or Platoon or BOTH of yall laughed your faces off at Bridesmaids. Or The Hangover. FOMF.

When you have time borrow the stick from @platonicluvonthebrain:disqus. For your ass.

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

It was sold out where I live, we actually got a group rate and ordered them on Fandango.com. Skip the line and go straight in with my phone and the tickets barcode gets me in. Usually there is a service fee but it's minimal if your getting several tickets.

  • Platoon

Bridesmaids and Hangover are in the same mess pile. Thanks for making it a color thing.

You're another of example of someone who cannot handle an opinion.

  • Platoon

    Thank you.

  • ThottyPippen

Just like I predicted, Rih just posted a video of herself in a BRA top, flat stomach, skirt, and a glass of champagne...LOL. When ya'll gonna just let her announce when she's pregnant instead of speculating...LMAO.

  • Misslaydj

it was GREAT!!!!! the movie has jokes for days. trailer is VERY dry compares to movie. you will be impressed. so good i saw it twice

  • hottlanta

I know right. Lil HOt had me rolling when she said she saw a friend of her's on Facebook at home with her friends and some food looking at the movie at home. I was like whoa that was quick. I wonder which beauty shop they got it out of.

  • Misslaydj

girls trip best movie in life!!!! rooting for this one!!! tears throughout the entire movie. gasping for air through most of it. trailer does it no justice and i never go see movies.

  • hottlanta

Thanks because these men in the ATL be killing me every summer. Can't wait for winter so they can cover it up.

  • ThottyPippen

She just posted a video of herself in a bra top and skirt, while dancing with her champagne..lol. She trolls. I think she knows everyone is ALWAYS saying she's pregnant.

  • IamAllnatural

Definitely not boring, this is probably the funniest movie I've ever seen. The whole movie was great, I wanna see it again because I missed parts due to people laughing so loud.

  • Elevated Soul

#BlackGirlMagic....I will most definitely go see the movie again within the next 2 weeks.I just wanted to make sure I supported it the 1st weekend...

  • IamAllnatural

Get a bootleg Amazon box, great investment.

  • hottlanta

Will do. I am glad to see the movie do well. Lil Hot told me about the scene when sexual chocolate was walking down the street and the women went crazy. I told her just like when I went to see the movie Best Man and the lady screamed in the movie and we saw Morris Chestnut on the wide screen. That was Oscar worthy. She said YEP mom you got it.

  • IamAllnatural

It's not for kids, it's an adult movie.

  • IamAllnatural

    Yolo, enjoy, have fun, laugh...

  • IamAllnatural

Umm, it's not that serious to have a whole discussion about why you don't want to see a movie.

  • Platoon

You actually live more than once. Stop following the world.

  • Platoon

    Understood

  • IamAllnatural

    And too serious

  • ThottyPippen

Just like I predicted, Rih just posted a video of herself in a BRA top, flat stomach, skirt, and a glass of champagne...LOL. When ya'll gonna just let her announce when she's pregnant instead of speculating...LMAO. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a68ef339525afd44325d64647aa1928f8e721c4d02580f7673159a7d246e9778.png

  • Platoon

I made a comment and just replying to folks. U good?

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

Morris makes an appearance in this film....

  • Please Stop The Madness

THE PREVIOUS POSTER MADE IT A COLOR THING. "I don't know if it's because this type of comedy has been oversaturated (from yt ppl) "
    FROM SMITH JANE.
    I RESPONDED ACCORDINGLY.

  • BlackGirls EatGreen

I tried not to gossip about her alleged engagement and pregnancy but I did listen to the gossip. LOL

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

Didn't you read my comments on those old @$$ men mingling with those young women in that new Baby Face video that Sandra posted? I think grown ups should act and dress age-appropriately.

I have acquaintances in their 50s, dying their breads, walking around with unlaced Timberland boots, and chasing after women who are young enough to be their daughters. They look like desperate fools.

  • Platoon

    Ok. My bad.

  • Elevated Soul

Actually the movie is a lot of fun but it also has good messages too.Black people like you need to
relax and omprehend that like other races Black people deserve o ne entertained too.

This movie is an adult comedy...This movie is not about "revolution",so why be negative at a movie you didn't even see...

I rarely go to movies but I do like to watch Black people star in movies.I do plan on watching "Detroit" next month and that's an entirely different type of movie....Later this year I will be checking out Geo Storm and that's on some apocalyptic type ish. Don't make assumptions about people based on the movies they watch.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

I agree. I would have preferred ALL the actresses be Tiffany Haddish's age or YOUNGER. I am tired of seeing the same 10-20 Black actors and actresses in EVERY film. Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah need to be ashamed for accepting the roles. Give some young blood a chance.

Side-note: Regina Hall still looks like she's in her 30s so she's the only one I'd let slide for this role....the rest of them....nahhhh

  • BlackGirls EatGreen

I use it for the TV shows, most of the ones I like are BBC. I am really enjoying Orphan Black right now. The Get Down, Crazy Head, Black Mirror, and Cleverman. As for the coins, I have family in three Countries and five households using my account. I just have them hit my a 5 in my paypal every now and then so it only costs a few bucks a month. Worth it!

  • IamAllnatural

Well in your case, enjoy one of your lives

  • hottlanta

Stop and I heard Mr. Breakfast himself Lorenz Tate in the movie as well. Gonna be a dyckfest for me. I am enjoying the movie already and I haven't seen it yet. Gonna be worth every dime.

  • Platoon

    Thanks for your opinion

  • Platoon

    Thanks :)

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

I know Hollywood isn't very generous with black entertainers, and the number and quality of roles are limited. However, someone needs to use common sense when filling these roles. I'm still angry that Angela Bassett wasn't given the part of Storm in the X-men series. Storm is a black woman with dark skin but they picked Halle Berry to play the part?!

  • Elevated Soul

No problem.....Always state your view no matte if people agree o not.I....... do get whee you'e coming from but I just disagree this time.

  • hottlanta

Yep these ole men in the ATL still be trying. I put my shades on to keep from staring because I ain't trying to get into a fight, I am going to a 70's party this weekend so ya know brothers gonna be up in there cutting up all over the place. They up in the attic right now puling all of that stuff outta the trunk. I don't believe in hoochie because I believe in being sexy. I will be sexy until I die. They can die that beard black all day but we ladies still know that is an ole gray dyck.

  • ThottyPippen

She's just trolling us at this point..lol. That red dress did NOTHING for the rumors..lol.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Yeah, that Storm mess is one of many examples. Taraji has a movie coming out called "Proud Mary". It appears to be some kind of Tomb Raider/Colombiana role. I don't think she's a good fit. Many have mentioned how she looks "hard in the face" in the previews but they were going to support anyways bc it's Taraji lol "Hard in the face" is code for OLD lol

I don't have a problem with older actresses playing age appropriate roles but many have stepped over their boundaries.

  • Platoon

    No doubt fam. Respect

  • ZRoJoTheLezBeyond

Right? I didn't like her in Suicide Squad either.

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

Not "hard in the face!" I haven't heard that in years! ?

  • https://twitter.com/Chicagowise Chicagowise

    "Old gray d/ck!" ?
I should ask my friends if they dye their pubic hairs too.

  • BlahBlahBlah

Dana don't want this stick right hur.

  • Li

Good movie. I laughed until I cried.

  • Dane

You gotta go! Really, it's the best movie I've seen in a theater since Best Man Holiday.

  • Karen Brady

Not molten lava. And shaking like jello?

  • Karen Brady

Have fun!!!! Love the 70's and 70's parties!!!

  • Karen Brady

    Bejing.

  • T3

Gooooooo if you need a good laugh! It's really a great funny movie.

  • speakinmymind

Ashamed to take a job in their profession?!?

This has got to be the dumbest shit I've read today.

  • hottlanta

I plan to. I am going as my alter ego Pam Grier. Got my afro wig and Imma put on my jumpsuit where I can tie a knot and show off my abs. Only thing about that is I gotta eat light because I don't want my stomaching showing a budge because I been dranking and eating all night.

  • Dane

    The Queen still rules!

  • hottlanta

You know the stomach that is so big as he is coming towards you, you can see his ocean waves in his stomach.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Are you dumb or are you slow? What did you not understand about my statements that they were too OLD for the roles!? They cannot play every age for every movie.

  • VanillaCaramel2shotsExpresso

Mr Tate is in there .... yes . Morris scene is funny .

  • Rahab

Actually, they would have been the correct age for 1995 college graduates. Middle aged women in the prime of their lives.

  • Rahab

Tuh, homecoming weekend with the Flossy Posse is real for 1990s HBCU alum. The energy takes control as you see old friends and remember how it all began for you to where you are now!

  • Rahab

Yes, saw it on cable and it was an excellent movie.

  • Darkandlovely617?
  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Tiffany Haddish would have been approximately the correct age. The rest of them are too old to have realistically completed or been in college in 1995 lol Hell, Jada Pinkett was playing a college student in 1992 on A Different World. Unless she was a super senior or non-traditional student, there's no reason she would have still be on anybody's campus in '95.

And Queen Latifah went to high school with my godfather....they graduated from HS in like '85 lol

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Last but def not least, for the subject matter of the film, I felt the actresses were too old. Stop grasping for straws to make them fit the roles. It is what it is. Glad y'all enjoyed the movie though lol

  • Noirluv45

You know, they sure don't. Every time I try to find a movie (usually an older one) I want, they never have it available. It is kind of a waste of money. I might do the same.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Not yet. I'm trying to find somebody to go with.

  • JerseyMom

    I went by myself. ?

  • Rahab

1992 college student to 1995 graduate is not grasping for straws. Had to be there kid.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

You are grasping for straws....them biddies are too old for this type of movie. I understand that the premise was friends who graduated in 1995 but that's irrelevant considering they are all truly different ages. Any who, I loved Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah in Set It Off....25 years ago lol

  • Rahab

Which makes them 45, if they were supposed to be 20 on Set It Off. It's not grade school where everyone is the same age. People matriculate and graduate at various stages of adulthood. Not grasping for straws, just aware of things on life outside of what others may witness. Maybe that's the target age the writer's were gearing the movie towards. Accomplished middle aged women.
