Wendy Williams kicked off Season 9 of her popular Wendy Williams Show by lighting the Empire State Building in NYC on Saturday, Sept. 18.

“I chose pink and purple, they literally gave me the color palettes to choose from,” Williams told ESSENCE.

The 53-year-old talk show Diva wore a floor length crushed velvet gown for her tower lighting ceremony.

Wendy shared the honor with her parents, Shirley Williams and Thomas Williams Sr.

She explained to ESSENCE what inspired her dream to light the Empire State Building.

She said when she first met her husband, Kevin Hunter, they drove around the city after having dinner in Times Square. “We got together and it was electric. We were insane about each other immediately,” she said.

During one of those drives, he pointed up to the Empire State Building and promised, “I’m going to get you up here, I’m going to get you up here.”
