Tchiya Amet Neil DeGrasse Tyson

A former student is accusing famed astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson of raping her when they both attended the University of Texas in Austin.

Tchiya Amet, a self-described “musician, healer, and teacher” was studying Galactic Astronomy in the graduate program when she met Tyson. She said she hoped to become the first black female astronaut.

In a blog post in 2014, Amet claimed Tyson drugged and raped her in his apartment.

The scandal surrounding disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has renewed interest in Amet's 3 year old blog post.

Amet said she was a regular visitor to Tyson's apartment, but one visit altered her life. She recalls blacking out after Tyson offered her a drink.

He offered me a glass of water. I accepted a liquid in a cup made out of a coconut shell. I recall coming back to consciousness briefly, then next thing I remember is seeing him in the hallway the next day. I have lived in this nightmare for 30 years, and it stops today.

I know this will be difficult for many of you to believe, understand or to know. However, know that this is the truth. Those who know me well can attest to the fact that I lived with undiagnosed PTSD of [at] least 25 years.

She said the sexual assault is the reason she didn't complete her studies at the university.

She also accused Tyson of offering students passing grades if they gave him oral sex.

"He talks about obstacles to reaching his goal of astrophysicist. Did anyone slip him a mickey? Perhaps this was his way of eliminating the competition… what a scam YOU are Mr. Tyson," she wrote.

Hontas Farmer, of Science 2.0, called out the double standard, saying Amet's original post was met with "deafening silence."

"This sounds just like what Bill Cosby was accused of and his accusers are more or less uniformly believed in the popular press and by the general public," says Farmer.

She added that Tyson's tactics were "something young men did way too often. My mother still reminds me to watch my drink when I go out with anyone."

True statement lol I do try to give the accuser the benefit of the doubt, but it seems like it's starting to get crazy with these accusers. That's not to say there lying. My dad played football in the early 70's and I remember him telling me stories of how they tried to stay away from white girls cause if they got caught the girls would always scream rape. That's not to say rape is not a very real thing in our society but part of me feels like it has to be some accountability involved. In my humble opinion

Just another terrible experiences that some women go through but remain silent about. The revelation timing whether it happened 30, 40, or 50 years ago is irrelevant. Some take it to their graves. It doesn't mean it didn't happen. And yes, many women will lie or confabulate, but this woman's claims date before Cosby and Weinstein, so she is not jumping not the #metoo train.

I'm not a Bush fan but old man Bush is confined to a wheelchair with Parkinson and dementia took group photo with wife and a bunch of people including a young lady who later claimed sexual assault after he placed his shaking arm around her. One later apologized. She is now part of the #metoo. I would recommend she never visit a nursing home with old folks and their shaking arms lest they might make contact with her.

  • Kanyade

I perused her Facebook and website. Interesting woman.

MY INTERPRETATION: She did say in one post that she came forward (in part) because she didn't want deGrasse Tyson to run for office.

WHAT I GLEANED: Also she believes that continued silence for all who suffer harassment continues to perpetuate the notion of "yeah, i might've drugged that person and had sex, but I didn't get caught and thus, it's okay because I'm not the only one whose done it."

MY CONCLUSION: Patriarchy reigns supreme. Also, the good ol' boys will continue to be good ol' boys. If she wants to call out deGrasse Tyson, then by all means do it. Also, she has a program or something called "Blue Lotus" something or other "healing" where she does help victims of sexual assault, abuse, violence, etc. Also, there was mention of wound-healing. She's legit in her practice of Rasta/Healing/Crystals/Moonbeams/Kemet/Native American/Hotep.

    Power on, sista.

  • RealATLPeach36

There is so much going on in the world we live in.

My mother says: "things been going on, you were just to young to notice, that's part of keeping a child in a child's place. Children worry too much. Once you became a woman and had a child of your own, and social media took off, it's now more in your face".

I said mom but we never had a president like Trump...she said "yes we did, he wasn't as vocal as Trump. Ronald Regan drop crack in our communities, Atlanta murders (our black kids coming up missing) Wayne Williams was the blame, but everyone knew it was the KKK, Gov't assistance was introduced, and the man/father/husband was taken out of the home if they wanted their children to eat with Food Stamps assistance, that's the start of broken homes.

It was hard for a black man to find blue collar work in that time".

Then she said you think Trump is HELL, HOOVER managed to kill everyone that was against him and his organized crime and he WASN'T the president.

I just looked at my son and held him tighter because I'm so afraid for him.

For the past 5 months or so I have asked God to watch over ALL MY MEN, and when I say ALL, I mean ALL. Every man, the man I know, the man I don't know, the man that don't love me, the man that love me, watch over them and protect them in your armor head to toe.

And I was like well, what did you expect? You took a drink from a stranger, or didn't watch what he was doing. These women, don't know the men and trust them with all their heart and soul and see what happens?

  • MookieFly

Good for her hopefully finding her peace, but the problem is that you would never know with some of the guys out here. Mfers will really live a double life. Doing charity working by day, and date raping by night.

I think one of the major reasons many victims don't come out is because they don't want to be blamed for the assault. Victims are knows to be questioned about what they wore, their sexual past/present, and what they did to bring it on, especially if the accused is in a position of power.

  • Phillybruh

Even if you haven't the accusation follows you forever. In every story about Kobe Bryant somewhere in it will be the accusations.

Just because it's a terrible situation doesn't mean you don't speak up. Timing is EVERYTHING. Those that have taken it to their grave chose that option. Is it right? Okay, I appreciate your comment.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

Unless the woman has mental issues or has been known to make false accusations like this in the past, she gets the benefit of the doubt almost every time. CURIOSITY?????

Don’t you mean COWARD? A Self Hating Coward?

The ONLY way you could EVER be with a Black Goddess, a true Celestial Being, not just one that talks about them, would be by DRUGGING HER, THEN DRAGGING HER TO YOUR BEDROOM, WHILE FULLY UNCONSCIOUS, TAKING OFF HER CLOTHES, AND THEN, WHO KNOWS WHAT WITH HER, OR FOR HOW LONG, WHEN
SHE AWAKENS, UNABLE TO MOVE, YOU CONTINUE YOUR DEMONIC ACTS. Is this what you mean by curiosity?

I really wish women would report these crimes as they happen. Anytime I've been a victim, I ran to the police for help as soon as I could after it happened, not several years later. I realize that women are scared and most feel as though they won't be believed or don't want their personal lives put on trial in court, but women need to be more courageous and report these assholes when they commit these sick crimes. We need to encourage women and children to be brave by speaking out when they are violated. Sexual assault is NOT okay nor is it ever acceptable.

  • NicoleZee

The theme song of EVERY prisoner around the world is that they didn't do it. While "some" people are in prison and did not commit the crime, I'm convinced that "most" people in prison are exactly where they belong. Criminals lie about everything. I could never trust someone like that; I've lived long enough to learn that the hard way. It is not that difficult to obey the law, it makes me sick that people think the rules don't apply to them and then they want to complain and hate cops because they can't follow the law. Ridiculous.

Kenneka is what it is. She needed people...and her people failed her. She had on a bra top to begin with and her breast popped out--understandable given the circumstances. her jeans and panties were on and to her waist; not pulled down as people are saying, but low-cut. she had a shoe off which was in the corner. i mean the girl didn't just lie down and go to sleep. no doubt she may have tried to bang on the doors with hand and foot. she literally froze to death; that's painful. the lowest temp was 8 degrees. 2 hours later after they open the doors the shyt was still at 30 something. people expect her to look good for some reason. i just hope her full understanding was impaired and her body was behaving but her brain wasn't aware. that is the most i can hope for.

  • Coffee1st

    *hard sigh*...I don't know.
I just don't get the rationale of telling the world about this sooo long after it happened. I could even see 2-5 years, but this is just....it makes no sense. The only thing that makes sense is that the truth will always make its way to the surface, maybe this is what this is. It's just the way it's being done just makes for an especially messy and confusing situation.

  • free

she said she woke up [in the apartment] and he was still doing whatever he was doing while she could not move, and all of this had to happen in his wife's presence mind you, then turns right around and says she doesn't remember shyt but seeing him at school the next day.

now if more women come out saying he wanted head jobs for As then that would add more credibility.

  • Shannypoo1976

As a woman who has been violated before this sinks my heart. People ask why did she wait so long to talk about it and the truth is, when something like this happens to you, the first emotion you have is guilt. You start thinking what did I do wrong? What could I have done to prevent this? Plus, if you notice, when women do come out sometimes they get talked about and blamed. You've already been hurt physically and now, when you tell someone you have to go through being shamed. It's a catch 22. It happened to me as a child and I never told anyone until I got married. It's a lot to deal with internally. If you have never been violated in that way be thankful because it's a tough thing to deal with.

  • RealATLPeach36

    Well keep the post coming

  • Noirluv45

Yours is one of the most thoughtful comment on this subject. You are so right. If a person has never been violated, they have no idea what it's like to expose their pain. There's nothing worse than being discredited.

  • Noirluv45

You were able to go to the police right away; not everyone woman experiences the same courage. I don't think it's as easy as being "brave." There are countless reasons many people don't report sexual abuse. I'm not going to judge those who choose not to come forward right away because we never what their particular circumstance.

  • TheOwley

I'll check it out. But yes, we are too polarized to agree the blue sky is actually blue, and then duke it out about the shade of blue.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

True, but my point is that rape is probably the only crime where a man can get convicted and lose his freedom just based on the word of one other person, without needing corroborating evidence. I remember a veteran cop told me that he's seen cases of women who accused their boyfriend/ex-boyfriend of rape, and but then felt guilty about it and later admitted they had made it up because they wanted to get back at him for one reason or another. So I'm sure there have been many cases where the woman didn't recant her testimony and the guy got convicted. That's not the majority of cases, but it happens.

  • TheOwley

You asked what was the message or the point. What you said is not a rebuke to what you said, specially since I've asked myself the same questions, ""why now?"" I answered myself and sharing what I believe. Sometimes speaking about it is cathartic for the person, or liberating. Some people take secrets to the grave after forgiving others, feeling shame, who knows. Neil (assuming he did it) has had time to think about it and come to grips with his actions. It won't relieve her misery, he won't be arrested. I still think he's a brilliant man and like many others, skeletons in the closet.

Still don't. I wonder what else she has that is undiagnosed.
Seriously I don't know if this woman was raped or not but if her PST is undiagnosed then how can we say whether or not she has it. Also if she has a police report or something it would make it a lot easier.

  • NicoleZee

That is very true, well said. I guess being a victim taught me to be brave and my family taught me to report crimes right after they happen or tell an authority figure who can help. In most cases the police may not be able to help much nor will the system, but I think it's better than keeping things bottled inside. But I completely understand why some women stay silent because there is no justice half the time, which is very sad. I think for me, being assaulted and abused made me stronger, I fight back and try to get help even if I don't win. But these shitty lawmakers, police officers, lawyers, and judges are the problem. They need to keep these sickos off the street permanently, but that's too much like right!

This. is getting ridiculous. So now it's Everybody who was raped, sexually harassed, assaulted going back 50 years, come out and tell our story. Do these women want to ruin and destroy the man's (woman's) career and reputation?
If I were the men, I would fight back. I wouldn't apologize and quit a job, just fight back, because it's getting ridiculous. I was raped too, but I'm not going to name names (he's probably dead), and I was touched appropriately by men, I'm not going to yell it to the public. Time for these women who are looking for 5 minutes of fame to just stfu and go on with their lives, which it seems they've done.

  • Li

My thoughts too. I was raped and I've been touched inappropriately but I'm not yelling names and talking about it. I brushed it aside and went on about my business. Survived. Karma will get the men anyway, so why bother -- esp. after 20-30-50 years!!!!

  • Jahnée Gill Mr.Eddie Murphy??

You and him are both stupid. Him for believing a monkey is his ancestor. And you for asking me such a dumb ass question.

  • MythCalledLove

Yes they are. When I had to testify before the grand jury (I was raped & kidnapped by a police officer). In DC the jury can ask you questions. I'm on the stand and every single woman asked me questions. Like why didn't I run? And I told her if someone has a gun pointed at you safety off and it's in your face and your pinned down. Where was I going to run to? One asked why didn't I yell for help or try to make noise so that someone would hear you and call the police. I wanted to crawl across that table. He was the police and he was speeding and got pulled over. Here I am crying no shirt just a bra. You would think the cop would hv been suspicious but nope he flashed his badge and end of story. I was in court to get my restraining order extended. The judge was a woman and she said Oh I see your a officer here in the district and I can see why you would want your gun back you can go back to work. I asked her to repeat what she said & what does she mean by that and if she was aware of the case and if denied I will file a formal compliant. You seem to be bias because he is a officer of the district. No disrespect your honor but I believe it would be wise to err on the side of caution. Needless to say it was extended. But you would think a woman would show compassion. People look for reasons as to why a rape occured. If the victim was at fault in some way. It is the most hurtful feeling when someone picks apart what the victim should or should not have done.

  • klutz

    slave to religion

  • klutz

    she could be lying

  • MythCalledLove

I thought so too. I had faith in the system that it worked. I had the biggest wakeup call. I was in law school doing my internship when I was raped. It hurt so bad to believe in something for so long. To believe that if I need the help it would be there. Every single encounter was another jab. Even the programs that are there for victims of crime see rape differently. If I didn't hv knowledge of the law I would hv been screwed. Even the district attorney only saw me as a case number. I removed the victim me aside and used all that anger to get me thru. When he was found guilty on all counts and the judges said bailiff take him away. I went limp and just broke down crying. I kept saying they didn't believe me, they didn't believe me. From that day on I vowed to be the person I wish was there for me.

  • sealsaa

Evolution is "wrong", but you choose to believe in magical sky beings, virgins births and talking snakes??? You're clearly retarded. Hold this L.

  • NicoleZee

Wow! I'm glad you survived and I'm glad you seem to be okay now. I still have days where it bothers me how the system just gives these sick losers a slap on the wrist. I've been the victim of sexual assault and domestic violence and no one was really there for me but me. Your family will try to be supportive, but they can never understand what you went through. What sickens me is that the laws are not tougher for these pieces of shit. Rapists and woman beaters should be executed if you ask me, or at least get life in prison. Violating someone is NOT okay in any way. What's even worse is that people support these sickos making excuses for them. I just take things day by day.

Pasts traumas will affect you emotionally, which is probably why I seem to attract losers into my life like I have in the past. I never thought my assaults might play a role in my relationships with others, but I think they have. I'm just thankful I survived every time I was violated by someone because some women didn't live to tell their stories. But hey, if God is still waking me up every morning, I must have a purpose for still being here. He blessed me with a son, so I have to live for him even if I have days when I don't want to keep going for me. God is the only reason I have survived this long; had it been up to me, I wouldn't have, I assure you. Having my son saved my life in more ways than one. Miracles happen every day, I just never thought God would send me one but He did :)!

  • Oya Shango

That is a big part of the problem.

Women being shamed into perpetual and eternal silence, by other women, just so these men's careers are not damaged. What about these women's shattered lives and careers?

I am from an older generation, when women had no voice and no chance of being heard, no matter how many years she waited. How long are we going to allow these men to get away with this?

How many women have to suffer acute depression, suicidal ideation, self-esteem issues, paranoia and other psycho-spiritual and social dysfunctions so that these sexual predators can enjoy their lucrative careers, while raping another generation young girls? . . . .When does it end?

When other women condemn them and condone their silence, it simply magnifies just how deeply complicit we have learned to be in our own oppression. I commend these women for speaking out. We still speak out about slavery and its horrors. What is the difference?

I was molested by an older cousin until I was 10. He went to jail for something else so that is when it stopped. I was ashamed and would not talk about it with anyone until I was about 35. I found that I was finally coming into my own as a woman and was able to speak on it.

  • Shannypoo1976

I don't feel like there's a wrong or right way. It depends on the victim and her feelings and circumstances. But what I am saying is WHENEVER a victim decides to come out with a story about sexual abuse there's a fear that if she says something that people will blame her or feel like she shouldn't have let it happen. The proof is in the pudding. Read the comments on this post. I would never discredit a person's story about abuse. If it comes out to be untrue then shame on them. But it's not for me to say I don't believe them.

  • Shannypoo1976

Yep, and water could be dry, but if she said it happened then at this point in time that's all we know. If it turns out to be untrue she has to answer to a higher power for that vicious lie but for now it is what it is.

  • Shannypoo1976

    God bless.

  • Shannypoo1976

    Nice. Thank you.

  • Noirluv45

You know what, Nicole? I think your story of abuse is very encouraging, and you might be the very person able to encourage others to report crimes. I think having experienced it yourself you can be a blessing to others. I don't know if you already do it, but maybe you can volunteer or something, you know? Like you said, we do have a shitty legal system and as long as victims/survivors of abuse are made to feel guilty about what happened to them, many will continue to remain under the radar.

  • Doink_Ahanahue

If this is real, she should take proper action. Social Media is not that. In addition, per her own recollection: "He offered me a glass of water. I accepted a liquid in a cup made out of a coconut shell. I recall coming back to consciousness briefly, then next thing I remember is seeing him in the hallway the next day." does not say he raper her.

I feel any person that assaults another in ANY way should pay for it, but do things the RIGHT WAY if you want credibility. Go to the authorities FIRST, the media frenzy will follow if it is a famous person.

Ladies, do NOT allow anyone to take from you what you have not offered.

  • Noirluv45

"Read the comments on this post." YES. I've noticed that whenever there is a story about a woman being sexually assaulted, the vast majority of people question her validity. I know there are women who accuse men of rape (Lord knows many Black men throughout history have been falsely accused) they are off the top disregarded or questioned. That's why many women don't come forward as you expressed in your comment. We won't even begin to discuss boys/men who have been abused.

I was on Twitter once going back and forth with A.J. Benza about Mary Kaye Letourneau and how she sexually abused her now husband of child abuse, and he said it was NOT abuse because Villi was a boy and I didn't understand boys and their sexual nature. I'm like ??, you've got to be kidding me! He did not believe Villi was a victim of child abuse! We went back and forth and he got angry. He didn't say what Mary Kaye did was right, but to him, Villi was not a victim. I'm like, "Replace Mary Kaye with a man and Villi with your daughter. Would you not call that sexual abuse?" He said (paraphrasing) that he'd be in jail if it was his daughter! I just shook my head and realized that there is a double standard, and that's why boys probably never tell their stories of abuse because of that sick mentality.

  • Shannypoo1976

    SMH. I just don't know....

  • Chocolate

Of course not, and that is much easier to do when u do not know the rapist, or when the rapist isn't well known.

  • Chocolate

Exactly. This is why the story of the coach with HIV who molested 42 boys was only discovered by a parent intercepting texts. None of those boys ever told anyone smh!

  • Noirluv45

It's a damn shame that boys feel as if they have to hide the abuse they face because society is so narrow-minded and stupid.
