Spencer Brown John Wilson

Appalachian State University officials have apologized for derogatory statements made by a white male tennis player during a tennis match against a black opponent at a HBCU.

College officials issued the apology on Monday after John Wilson, the black player, complained on Twitter.com about offensive racist statements made by Spencer Brown, who's white.

Wilson tweeted that Brown told him, "at least I know my dad". The tweet included a photo of Brown, according to the NY Daily News.

Brown was suspended indefinitely after Sunday's match with North Carolina A&T State University, a historically black college.

Wilson is A&T's senior class president.

A spokeswoman for Appalachian State said there would be no other statement from the school.

  • Readytochokemothernatureout

Oh now come on...nobody would be in school in my day if this were the case.

  • hottlanta

Should have told that white azz make sure your nephew is not your younger brother because your sister got pregnant by your dad.

  • HIS4EVA

sounds trivial but i would like to know more of the context/convo

  • Ms.Vanilla

The statement was ignorant. That's like saying to him at least my dad isn't a serial killer because most serial killers are white males. That was so ignorant.

  • ReadingIsFundamental4Real

At least my dad isn't my uncle!

  • i troll it like i see it

I bet he won't be running his mouth next time, if there is a next time. Racist little pr*ck.

  • Liah

Yall better stop letting #45 put batteries in your back!...Im sitting here like TRY ME...PLEASE!

  • Ozad

Appalachia...land of the coal miners and poor white hillbillies..not surprised

  • Liah

    Or a cave dweller...Yes it was...Very ignorant!

  • Ryan

I stopped reading as soon as I saw Appalachian State.

  • Liah

Right!!!....Get wet and smell like Dogs!!#CAVEDWELLERS

  • Ozad

that's what should have been his comeback ......a common occurrence in Appalachia

  • Ryan

There's not even coal jobs up there anymore. All they do is scam the government for checks and steal copper pipes to sell for meth.

  • Kanyade

    LOL

  • the guest

The truth is white people derive great satisfaction from the unfortunate social standard and norm of child abandonment by American black men.

"At least I know my dad" is a very common derogatory phrase directed at black youth by white youth who are very prideful and smug about having two parent homes (yet literally can't function when parents divorce).

The only people who can fix this are black men by making conscious, deliberate, and determined commitments to being present fathers.

It's become an expectation that a black father is not in the child's life and an exception when a black father is. This should not be the case because black people have a great history of family bonding and survival.

  • Trey

    lol...was it true?

  • Anunnaki

Dear john, here is your strength NEXT TIME SAY

"Well u MIGHT be right but atleast my son wont be shooting up no schools, or running up in churches, killing folks. And end it with, thank god for my melanin skin, and texture hair, i dont have to worry about those little critters yall get in ya hair...NEXT

  • hottlanta

I would have said "tick tock, tick tock" and he would have said what is that. I would say in honor of the Menendez Brothers and in a matter of time you will kill you dad.

  • Anunnaki

Yessssss, gotta have a clap back

  • SweetTEE

He should have let him that white boy KNOW HIS HANDS. #AGGIEPRIDE

  • Noirluv45

One thing I know about White folks is that they twist facts and deflect. The one thing that isn't publicized, and never will be by MSM (they have to protect their faux images and will do so by any means necessary) is that many of these so-called "two-parent homes" are riddled with abuse of all kinds, but of course they have to keep up the facade that all is well in White America.

  • ThottyPippen

I would told that mayo-face "Well you should know ya daddy because I'm piping ya mama down every night. Now respect me as the man of Your house...and work on your game son"..lol.

  • 1BlueStar

Questions: what lead up to him making the statement? Not that it would be justification but just wondering. Question: what did the investigation involve? I mean what proved to the school that yes he did say that?. It sounds to me as if the school just wants to say okay we'll take the blame and suspend him for a minute; now let's move on.

  • SweetTEE

Listen, white boy, the only reason you know your daddy is probably cause its yo DAMN UNCLE. Appalachian? Exxxxactly..... AggiePride.

  • hottlanta

I know right. Black coal slush runoff water drinking SOB. He just mad because his family lost his affirmative black lung provision under Obamacare.

  • Ms.Vanilla

This is so true. I have many white friends that constantly complain about abuse, alcoholism, etc in their homes when they were kids. I can't tell you how many of my friends don't even speak to their parents because they say they were bad parents. I'd rather grow up in a loving 1 parent home than to be victimized on a daily basis by an abusive mother or father. Having both parents does not always equal love.

  • Simone

At the end of the day how white people feel about black people always come out. One way or another.

  • Ms.Vanilla

    Good night Roses!

  • Ms.Vanilla

    Or grand daddy...

MOST CERTAINLY ONE OR THE OTHER

  • shun king

thats what i would like to know?

  • EyeIsTellintheTruthThisTime

LOL. I wish I didn't know my daddy. POS. Though the reason we see all this deviant in the black community is because of lack of fathers. This is systematic thing, done purposely through introduction of crack cocaine into our neighborhoods and the incarceration of us at astronomical rates.

  • Noirluv45

Here, here! When I was a CASA, the number of dysfunction White homes I entered is mind-boggling! Funny how they never talk about that, and if they do talk about dysfunction, it's never a "White" thing.

  • Bonsai

So this white boy reads statistics and automatically thinks he got one up on yah? Well I hope he’s not one of those with the 50,000 downloaded child pornography on his computer. If so, pick out a tree and go hang yourself like the rest of your buddies.

  • shun king

i have said it time and time again its not always the dads abandoning the child

  • Phyllis

I truly think racism will never go away. I’ve experienced it since the early 80’s thanks to my “friends” parents. It’s so taught to folks when they are young.. smh?????

  • Sunnie?

I’m sorry that young man had to go through that!

  • hottlanta

Well I was watching the news last night and one of Atlanta's better neighborhood mom/dad/son and all 3 were selling drugs. I can only the conversations around the dinner table every night

  • hottlanta

He will have a helluva time buying a birthday card.

  • White trash

He should have told him a nice and simple fukkk you or kiss my black a$$. He was mad to lose at TENNIS to a black opponent at an HBCU. Pure jealousy and an attempt to put him in his place I’m shocked he didn’t call him a ni**er. I think John handled it maturely. Many would have whooped his ass, and it would have been deserved.

  • Breitbart_Savior

    Boo hoo hoo.

Why do we still care about what these sociapaths think or say?

Don't we all know that after spending 20 minutes with these monkeys we can also find the holes in their lives?

  • JRock

See he need his ass whipped. I don't condone violence in any form (fighting, shooting, ass whipping, etc) but he need his ass whipped. If his dad is in his life he probably is an old white guy on the DL taking it from behind and he prolly a pedo too. White trash. Yes, I said it. So sick of this crap and how people always coming for our race like we just gonna sit down and take it.

  • hottlanta

The one who does the stats fudge the numbers in their favor to make them look superior over everyone else. I have always said that.

  • hottlanta

20 nana-seconds is all I need. 20 minutes is toooo long.

  • shun king

lol this sure has triggered alot of people i see wonder why?

  • Jen_no_juice

That was the class president who said that???? Just throw the whole school away.... but sadly he will probably become a politician

  • PLEASEDontTellMe

right! i am no longer shocked by comments of this nature

  • Phyllis

I know this isn’t an open post as I have already commented on this article... but why do I keep getting multiple alerts about the worker who triggered Hawaii’s false missile alerts?!?! They are coming back to back on my phone !!!!

  • PLEASEDontTellMe

He should have responded with... "DO YOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUU???" or some dumb ish like... "YEAH most victims do know their molesters"

  • EyeIsTellintheTruthThisTime

Wilson, the black athlete who the insults were directed to, is the class president here. He attends A&T.

  • Jen_no_juice

You sho right. Reading is fundamental chile

  • EyeIsTellintheTruthThisTime

What do you mean, my brother?

  • the guest

And they crumble when faced with any type of adversity, while black people have resilience. It'll be interesting how that white kid who made that comment will handle being suspended. Trust, not well. While the young brother he insulted is thriving as president of his class REGARDLESS if he knows his dad or not.

  • the guest

    Beautifully stated.

  • Noirluv45

Yes, they do. I'm willing to be he's whining and crying about how he's the victim. He's probably complaining about how Black people are so sensitive, blah, blah, blah. No, I don't think he's handling it well at all. Uh huh! Yep. The young brother is probably better off that the jackass who insulted him.

  • shun king

just read some of the comments
    below

  • the guest

It is ignorant but its a common ignorance among whites. But really the comment was just plain cruel because mocking something like child abandonment is heartless and evil. That white kid is a mean evil bigot. That white kid would literally die if his parents separated which is something completely out of his control.

  • the guest

    Harsh.

  • the guest

    Thank you. I agree.

  • the guest

    LOL

  • Breitbart_Savior

Yeah. The whining is getting old. Just hit 'em back in like.

  • the guest

That's what he should have said. But the young brother is a class act. He's brilliant and president of his class. Notice how whites love to try intellectual and refined blacks. That white kid deserved a pop in the mouth like someone else said on this thread. I agree with them and I also don't believe in violence.

  • SumthinSweeter

    facts...

  • Precious Kitten Heels

Ya'll know that dude was right! Why get mad at the truth.

  • Breitbart_Savior

Maybe for you and your kin.

  • Precious Kitten Heels

You know the majority of black children don't know their dads or have a part time dad. Stop trying to look over the fact that it's true. 72% of black children are born out of wedlock and or live in single parent households. Stop getting upset because other races are noticing the dysfunction in the black community and pointing it out.

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

THats my favorite insult because it hits directly in the guts. Did the white boy randomly say it or was brown fawking with him? If you don't know your daddy you should watch who tf you talking to because not all of us are illegitimate

  • Oretta Grace Smith

But is his dad an effective father. Or one that abused all of them since birth and the crazy son will shoot up the school, church or movie theater!!!

  • Ryan

    Truth.

  • Renee26

That’s what’s that cracka azz cracka get! Lol

  • ReadingIsFundamental4Real

    stupid just arrived; I'm out.

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Not really!!! There are some positive black fathers. And all white fathers are not good fathers. Just as many or more of them are on welfare.

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Dysfunctional has no race. It is in Every race. Have you heard of trailer parks? Out of wedlock or single parents doesn't mean they Don't know their fathers. Again, All white fathers Are Not positive, like All black fathers are negative. Look at The ID channel sometimes.

  • You Could Never

Saw this on our statewide news. Listen. Im not surprised. Klan marches up in Boone, NC where AppState is located.

  • Precious Kitten Heels

But can you explain why a majority of violent criminals and criminal activity occurring in the black community i.e. Chicago, Detroit, and inner cities mostly populated by blacks usually come from black fatherless homes?

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Now, he will have more time with his dad!!!

  • stav

Thank you! I see it daily. Kentucky has one of the largest populations of white people that none of the children are with their parents due to them being heroin junkies, the grandparents and even great grandparents have them. With this opioid epidemic (just one instance) plenty of white kids don't have either parent, but like you said ID Discovery, 48 hours, etc. these shows speaks volumes. White people think if they keep telling the same old lies, that somehow they become truths.

  • ???TheRider???

You mean his dad/uncle? Piece of trash will be working in the mines now with no education.

  • Rayne

You and dad bout to be spending spesha time together lol

  • stav

20/ 20, 48 hours, American Greed,Datline, ID Discovery etc, can you tell me why so many white men kill their wives, and commit violent crimes. Snapped.. can you tell me why so many white women kill? West Virginia ..why are so many imbred whites so violent and junkies, and that goes for many, many other Red states in those rural areas and cities. Ask yourself that!

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Probably why they are serial killers, shoot up the schools, churches, etc. And the fathers are in the house? As I said, it's Not about race or the father in the house.

  • BadAss Will

I wouldve said I know your dad too.... Jared the guy from the subway commercials

  • pure_rachet

    LOL

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Too bad dad couldn't keep him in school.

  • Y’all Jealous Cuz I’m Prudy

Right! I know plenty of black fathers who are in their kids lives. My father and all my uncle's and both grandfather's were always there. Yes, they are all married to the mothers of their children. All black fathers don't take off when their child his born. Many do stay around and help raise their kids. And at one time black fathers being there for their children was normal. Today things have changed and unfortunately some men are not as family attentive as they use to be.

  • Lorenzo Chaps

This is probably just a sound bite. I laughed when I read the caption though. Guys are ball busters, jonin, get under your skin characters...especially in sports. I can't say if he shouldn't be offended, but me personally, I would've walked it off.

  • Phillybruh

I tend to agree with walk it off but that crossed the line.

  • Phillybruh

But in this case its apparently not.

  • stevetheque

Dude should have forfeited the match by going upside his head with his racket! F#ck breaking serve, break his head!

  • Lucky8

Lol no he did right, they would have arrested him and then the white dude wins

  • Lyn

He should have told him you know your momma too because you sleep with her.

  • Lucky8

The Vegas gunman was white, timothy mcveigh was white ( he killed a lot of kids) the fella that shot up the elementary school in connecticut is white, all the church shooters are white, all the mass murderers are white. Could you tell me why white folks commit mass murder almost every month?

  • stevetheque

He wins with lumps on his head!!

  • NeverSurprised

I laughed too. If we're being honest, we have to admit it is funny and, in all too many cases, TRUE.

  • Holler If Ya Hear Me

I hate living in this racist country. It really cheapens life.

  • NeverSurprised

She didn't say all. She is quoting statistics that cannot be ignored. There is a huge difference between the percentage if black children being raised by single mothers (73%), and the percentage of white (29%). The problems affecting black families will never be solved if we keep pretending they dont exist.

The most recent numbers from the CDC's last report in 2012 show the breakdown by race:

    Racial or ethnic group
    Percent of births considered "non-marital"

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders - 17 %

    Non-Hispanic whites - 29%

    Hispanics - 53%

American Indian and Native Alaskans - 66%

    Blacks - 73%

  • Marlika

He thinks he knows his dad. We know how them YT women’s gets down.

  • sherri2016

Why is it that white people think all black kids grew up without a father my husband is a good dad so is my dad and every male in my family also they must forget its a bunch of heroin addicted whites not taking care of their kids

  • freelancepimp .

I don't think there is trash talking culture on the tennis court, so that means the kid had to go out of his way to be racist. They will do and say anything to make themselves feel better. Talk about serious inferiority complex. Kid probably couldn't make the basketball team because of those negroes and now they are coming on the tennis court too. Poor little white kid.

  • stav

    Media manipulation...that's why!

  • stav

And what color are the people that put these so -called stats out? Right! Media manipulation, one can never believe ANYTHING that's ALWAYS in favor of one race over the other. That's common sense, which we know is not common!

  • NeverSurprised

Are you serious? The 2012 report was issued by the CDC during the OBAMA administration. The CDC is a federal agency which reported to the OBAMA administration at the time of these findings. Does that answer your ridiculous question designed to further deny what we all know to be true?

Black men routinely sire multiple children by multiple women making it impossible for them to live in the same home with at least some of their offspring. Why do you feel the need to pretend this isn't true?

  • CaramelDrop

    How is he right?
Not knowing your dad and your dad not living in your home are two different things. The latter is often the case. Y’all must be in a real f’d up situation if this is YOUR and other black males around you truth.

  • CaramelDrop

You quote all these statistics but don’t recognize the vast difference in not knowing your dad and parents not being married. Certainly agree our family structure as a whole needs improvement but to say 73% of black children don’t KNOW their father is stupid, reckless and disrespectful to all black men and women as a whole.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

That person almost never misses an opportunity to same something negative about the black community.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

People are just getting bold now, saying whatever.

  • Tequila Mockingbird

This is not new. I'm Hispanic I went to a predominately white school. I've had kids (white kids) say way worse things to me as a kid and they weren't suspended. BTW, we don't actually know if he said that but not saying he didn't either.

  • Tequila Mockingbird

He should've said really? So do I. There's actually an "I Know My Dad" meeting after the game. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

  • MythCalledLove

At least I know my dad.. Do you? You were adopted. Now that would be funny as hell.

  • Quagsire!

Yeah and I would’ve told YT “I bet you do know your previous father. Do you shower together too?”

  • Evillene

YT bastard! "Appalachian State"? Well if he's from WV his dad is probably also his uncle or his grandfather.

  • Malcom Flex

Most did. Not have a dad it's the bm's curse you can't rise as a man if you fail your seeds.

  • Malcom Flex

It's the truth how many of you male's know your kid's favorite color?

  • GIJoeJones

Being an officer in the U.S. Military means having a front row seat to the products of dysfunctional white homes. Middle and upper middle class white folks don't tend to enlist in the U.S. army, they go to college and come in as an officer. So when I started speaking with young white enlistees about 18 years ago, it was my first exposure to dysfunctional white upbringings. I really didn't know the depth of the issue until then. It's also funny that this young man is frustrated about losing his match, and his first response is a swipe at his opponents race. Something that has absolutely nothing to do with the situation.
Just evidence once again, that this racism is brewing just beneath the surface, waiting to spill out into every day life whether they admit it or not.

  • Chanel

What part was racist?? I hear kid and grown ups, say this all the time. Yes, it's very immature for him to say something like this. Women tell other women in an argument, at least I have a husband. I just don't understand it. What else was said, to the young man?? I'm just totally lost on this one.

  • the guest

Child abandonment is child abandonment. Men who pay child support through a court order and CHOOSE to not know or co-parent their children ARE indeed STILL child abandoners. Child support is used as an excuse and cover up for child abandonment.

Not a new thing! I've heard people say stuff like this as kids to each other. Social Media allows the whiners to come out and blow everything up as an issue. All he needed was a good comeback, win the match and go home. SMH

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

I'm quite sure he said it. If he didnt say it, it's unlikely his school would have suspended him and also apologized after looking into it.

  • tintin

that ID channel makes you think.. people are crazy.. especially dem white ppl

  • Coffee1st

You're right Many don't. But you know what. I've lived in the projects, across the street from the projects, on Country Club drive, etc. My point is I've lived among the white and black in the hood and in very nice areas....and I'm seeing a trend. My "black, both-parents-in-the-home" children had many white friends whose fathers, or in some cases BOTH parents, take off leaving them in the care of their grandparents. I also started seeing young men in the hood, pushing strollers, dropping their kids off at school, at McDonald's eating with their kids, etc. I'm seeing a slow, subtle shift that will never make news. The headlines will continue to push lies, the media will continue to push stereotypes, and some of our own will continue to aide in our destruction from within.

  • Zeta Phi Beta 1920

    Are you serious?

  • Precious Kitten Heels

And if the stats were in favor of black people you wouldn't have a problem with those so called "media manipulated" stats would you. SMH.

  • Zeta Phi Beta 1920

    THE MEDIA.
THAT IS NOT RUN BY US.

  • stav

What does the Obama administration mean? The Government and politics sre bigger than one man. Cause Obama is black that means the stats were accurate?I stand by what I said. We agree to disagree !

  • Coffee1st

I agree with you. Its silly to regard his statement as racist. What is was, was a huge FAIL by a little prick suffering from melanin envy. They may have verbally sparred but yt boy got bested by Mr. Wilson and was out of ammunition. He, therefore, out of low character and ignorance, said something lame and irrelevant to the situation.
The spirit behind what was said was racist but the statement itself was so retarded, it wasn't even worth addressing. He got an "L" either way.

  • Quitedeliteful

What a wimp!!! He loses the match and then tries to make it personal?!? This clown is butt hurt because he lost. I feel his statement racial -- racial profiling. A black man bested him and he couldn't take it so reverts to a whack stereotype of black men not being there for their children. It's racial -- I bet he wouldn't have said this if his opponent was white... He probably would have shaken his hand and said congrats...

  • Coffee1st

Yes, yes and YES. My occupation gives me opportunity to visit multiple homes. Many of them are white folks from the trailer park to million $ homes. I see, first hand, the ratchetness and dysfunction. It was eye opening because I, like many others, believed the hype. That's why the insults they hurl don't bother me anymore. ?I KNOW their little secret These homes are a hot mess...lol,smh.

  • Quitedeliteful

    LOLLOLLOL!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Tequila Mockingbird

Not exactly. This is a similar situation as with the sexual assault cases. Most of those accusations are just that, accusations but men lost their jobs anyway. Should they have without definitive proof? Same with this. What will happen if he were to admit he made it up? Will the other boy get suspended for lying? Will these women who get exposed as lying have consequences? Not saying he didn't say it but, not saying he did either.

  • Applebootay

Is it racist? You have to ask? Would he had same the same thing to another pasty? Prolly not, i's what I call a disparaging remark with racial undertones....You know WHTY people stay slick saying everything they can think of short of calling you a Ni@@er. I work with them everyday so I know.

  • Malcom Flex

Not seeing what you see, in my region it's upset bw single mothers pushing strollers obese looking for a bf, packs of black males bothering people, african people married to each other with high-achieving kids, and the richest bm are swirl married. That's the trend in my region, oh and more fatherless boys getting arrested over stupid shitz.

  • Angela Flowers

Where is the full story my goodness. So he gets beat, walks up to the black guy and says "At least I know my dad"?

  • Bob Chalmers Jr

My question is, did anyone else actually hear that comment, or is this another case of unsubstantiated accusations, much like some of the sexual harassment claims that have suddenly surfaced, years after they supposedly happened, and nobody else seems to have heard or seen anything.

  • Colleen

Some of you are real ignorant if you really believe all white kids know who their daddies are....I worked in the child support system and saw the numbers, white absentee parents and white women on welfare. There were also many absentee mothers, so Wilson should have just replied by saying "yeah and at least I know my mother and I'm not destined to be a serial killer", if you want throw out stereotypes @sshole! So let's stop this foolishness, there is bad behavior in all skin color of humans and it's just sad that we still can't get along. Unfortunately, this guy problem did make the comment, it's amazing with everything going on in the world regarding black and white, white people will just not shut up instead hey have to always come back and apologize for their stupidity. It is stupid, you lose your career, your scholarship/college admission, be banned, just because you are so obsessed with people of color. You people can't ever live your life because you are so afraid of a person with darker skin is going to WIN!
    Get over yourselves!

  • Cannelle

I never worked in the child support system but know that absentee parents are a big problem in the white community. They try to hide it or deflect by saying "not me" and bringing up black people. I even read somewhere that the most expensive dodger of child support (he owed somewhere in the millions) was a rich white man. He HAD the money, he just wouldn't give some to the minor kids he chose to produce. How much of a low a$$hole can you be?

Anyway, this is just one in a long list of stereotypes that non-black people like to use against black people, as if they don't have their own problems with absentee parents, drug addiction, pedophilia, killings and all around ignorance. Another famous stereotype lobbed at black people is laziness; even as a child, I didn't understand this because I learned that black people built the USA, and their stolen labor helped build the roaring economies of France, the UK and elsewhere. How TF are they lazy?!

And speaking of stereotypes, I was actually pretty impressed that Dude Bro from Appalachia appeared to have all of his teeth.
