Lupita Nyongo

This is why some people can’t show enthusiasm for the new fantasy and science fiction movie Black Panther. Marvel Studios spent millions on promotion and marketing for a movie about a superhero in a mythical African nation.

Critics are raving about the film, which they say blends politics, culture and activism better than any Marvel movie to date.

One of the film’s stars, Lupita Nyong’o (pictured center), actually said Black Panther could “unite the country”.

But after Marvel Studios recoups its million dollar budget and sits back and watches the profits pour in, will they donate some of that cash to help feed hungry families in the real Africa?

Black Panther is on track for a $100 million to $120 million opening.

Will Marvel Studios build schools in Africa or donate money for wells to provide clean water to children in East Africa?

If only we could be as enthusiastic about Africa as we are about a fantasy movie.

It is unfortunate. The pride associated; as fabricated as it is, is the only pride some people will have…SMH

  • BadAss Will

First off its a fiction, they not obligated for anyone interpretation. Second why are the obligated to build houses in another country that is so called fiction? Why do society put extra responsibility in people? Damn it’s a fiction movie! White movie creators dont build shit yet black movies has too?

  • TMW

There is a lot of poverty, homelessness, mental health issues, education concerns, forced incarceration, etc. of African Americans in the United States. I get really confused why everyone wants to turn philanthropic efforts to other countries and ignore what’s going on in their own backyard. I agree that a false sense of pride is dangerous, especially when it makes you ignore what’s happening in real life.

  • WutizstillHERE!

What entertainment movie ever written went towards anything but the pockets of those who are affiliated with it? Like Dayum! Can anything black positive not be met with cynicism ?!! WTF..

I can’t stand when we spit conspiracy theories to divide ourselves. This is going to be a great movie and I can’t wait to support it. it’s the exact type of movie we have been crying that our black actors have been discouraged from benefiting from. I’m so proud for this cast of actors.

  • TMW

The other part of my comment didn’t post…

BUT, this is JUST A MOVIE. For entertainment purposes only. Why are people making it more than that, and expecting some big change for the black community because of it?

  • WutizstillHERE!

Damn! Can we enjoy this ride for a full 24 hours atleast? People always trying to rain on anything at all that’s positive in the black community. Even a damn movie. Keep on, ya’ll gone pay for that shyt!

  • Breitbart_Savior

    Good point.

In all fairness, it’s widely known that blacks are, typically, more emotional than cerebal — anything that excites the senses.

We’re more gung-ho about a movie than we are about showing solidarity for Colin Kapernick and the NFL boycott.

  • CrunchyBlack1

Only the faux pro blacks see this as a win. At the end of the day a white owned company is getting all those billions and the only thing we get to look at is a what could be situation. Whites aren’t afraid of this movie because they know nothing with come of it (cept billions) cause we’re too “crab like” to come together for anything that isnt self serving

I’ll see it when it comes to the Red Box. Anywhoo, Lupita has been a let down to me. First, her casting couch stories with Harvey Weinstein and reading about her snubbing black journalists and got the nerve to talk about unity?.

  • deanya

? cut the bs. It’s a movie and yes it is a win for black Americans! . Cause seeing that black action movies sell means more blacks in action playin the main character and more black kids having black superheroes to look up 2 . Don’t try to make it seem like they promised to give money to Africa or back to black Americans we all know how the game is played

  • iWasteTime

The excitement is due to representation!
For DECADES we’ve been portrayed as the help, the killer, the robber, the drug dealer, the gang banger, the rapist, the fatherless, THE SLAVE! etc etc. So much so that a lot of non blacks think it is a reality.
Why can’t we be excited to see a superhero and the supporting cast look like us and from the Continent? My son is excited, I’m excited he can see someone the same color as his momma save some sh!t

Folk are intentionally obtuse when it comes to anything Black folk are excited about or take pride in. Including Black folk.
This movie isn’t going to change the world.
This movie isn’t going to suddenly turn the blatantly racist president of the united states to a non racist.

My son can know that he has the ability to be the President like Barack and dream about saving the world like Black Panther instead of Batman

#truth…….and to think that Marvel will do any of those things is a far reach……faaarrrrrr reach. The thought is nice, but in reality….aint gonna happen. My boys are excited about the movie as well!!

  • Coffee1st

Just let this movie be great.
Movies don’t typically donate proceeds to outside causes and charities. They make movies to entertain and make money. Why should this one be any different. Oh, because it’s an overall all black cast with no roles as prostitutes, drug dealers, men in women’s attire, coons, street bums, low class/low intelligence, etc.
This movie is going to be straight fire and criticism has to be drawn somewhere – no matter how asinine.

  • Yoni7

THIS! I was excited when I watched Luke Cage on Netflix. So I know THIS is that amplified!

  • free

    lol

  • CrunchyBlack1

Going to see it to support the project/black casting vs thinking its going to be THE thing that wakes black folk up are two diff things.

  • CrunchyBlack1

they’re going to see it too. just watch. marvel has a lot riding on this movie. it may not affect its bottom line totally, but it will set the tone for future standalone movies, not connected to the avengers universe.

  • deanya

Nobody thinks that lol but it’s nice seeing a BLACK SUPERHERO. So yeah we’re gonna support it cause we wanna see black actors play real roles and not just thugs hoes or broken down woman

  • Blue

I’on care what this post say. I’m riding hard for Black Panther.

  • deanya

We all know whites are still gonna see the movie cause they wanna be able to say it’s bad .

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Black Panther is definitely causing a lot of fake Black pride. I’m not sure why everyone is soooo excited beyond purely the entertainment aspect of the film. There’s people going to see the film *strictly* because of the all Black cast & crew despite not actually liking comic book films. Weird.

  • violet_skyz

So why is building wells and opening schools a quest for a better Africa? Are those the only things you can think of to better Africa? or like most you dont know enough about Africa to say what it needs to be improved? Does anyone have thoae questions and answres? why is it up to a big studio to provide solutions for Africa????

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Why shouldn’t Marvel/Disney donate to Black causes? They are literally using the Black masses and their need to feel validation as a marketing tool. They might as well give back to y’all lol

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Auntie is an African from Europe….that’s her people and that’s why she writes on them.

  • deanya

It’s not fake pride . It’s support for black actors having a bigger role in movies . It’s the same thing when Obama ran for president hell yeah we went out and voted cause he’s black why wouldn’t we when white people do shit like this all the time

  • Anunnaki

Last I check Africa is rich in minerals and everything, I don’t be believing all the bs, they say about Africa

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Black actors have been playing “real” roles since before you and I were born. A few Black Africans and others playing superheroes does not erase the work from the past. Some of my favorite Black movies (with an all Black cast) are over 30 years old now and they did not have not one hoe or broken down woman.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

It’s fake pride. And using Obama is not a good example. His record with the Black community and Black immigrants is deplorable.

  • deanya

You dumb if you black and don’t support an all Black cast BLACK SUPERHERO Movie. Yall don’t get that this is the 1st big black superhero movie to hit main screen . This is a 1st in America history and yall trying down play it like this shit happens every day. It ain’t fake black pride it’s black support and we should all back this the same why we backed Obama cause this probably isn’t gonna happen again anytime soon

  • JRock

I will wait to see the movie first before gathering an opinion on this one.

  • MsVAllDay

Seriously! When was the last time you’ve seen an all black cast in this type of movie! This is an epic moment, that’s why people are going to watch it. Why wouldn’t blacks support it? I’m definitely going to support this movie and I’m certainly not a fan of comic book films at all. Not to mention the support of the black actors in the movie!

  • shun king

I saw an African president was agreeing with Trump that Africa is a s***-hole

  • deanya

It’s a great example cause black literally voted for him cause he was black

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Are you stupid or dumb? lol Like this literally is not a first. Meteor Man was the first Black superhero movie with an all-Black cast and crew.

  • Kim’s Original Face

I dont eeeemmm much care Im going to see it *Kanye Shrugs*

  • klwbaby

It’s just a movie. If the other movies from Marvel studios didn’t have the same questions asked about them, then why should this one?

  • deanya

? name 1 black superhero movie that did numbers like this ?

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

I never stated what people should and should not support. Any who, I saw Meteor Man in 1993. It was epic for us then too.

  • deanya

And nobody is saying it erase anything and even though some of your favorite movies with all black cast had blacks playing real roles can you tell me how many of those movies sold big in movie theaters ?

  • JRock

    Open post.

Back to the Grammys. I have always said ion care how broke I am or how many bills I gotta pay there are just some men I would not sleep with for money. Jay-Z was at the top of that list.

However, after reviewing my bills last night that I have to pay for February, I have decided the following.

Wait for it cuz I’m saying this in my Chris Tucker voice from Rush Hour 2.

“What’s that you’re eating?” I hold my head up and say: “Camel’s hump. Mmmm, dats kinda good.”

  • deanya

    Never heard of it .

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

The Black superhero films of the ’90s that I saw had limited budgets and marketing so their numbers reflect such.

  • ???TheRider???

That wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously. Meteor Man was a comedy, not backed by a big studio.

  • deanya

Never heard of it . And how much did that movie make? How long was that movie talked about ?

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Coming to America has made almost $300 million worldwide. And it’s a classic.

  • JRock

There are questions because of the mainly black cast in this movie whereas other Marvel movies have a mainly white cast.

Like I said people are always coming for our race no matter what good we try to do.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Sooo because you’ve never heard of it, it didn’t exist?

Let me guess, you just became a fan of Black comics yesterday all because Marvel marketed to you? Pathetic.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

I don’t know. You have Google don’t you? Don’t discredit a first because you don’t know it.

  • deanya

Never said I was a fan honestly I’m not gonna to see it cause I don’t like action movies lol and I never said the movie didn’t exist

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Most superhero films are pretty comedic. That’s the point. They are light and airy with a tinge of seriousness when the bad guys come around. It was as serious as Superman and them. But you know how y’all devalue *real* Black art.

  • TMW

I’m just speaking in general, not about Sandra specifically. Lots of American celebrities do the same thing – Oprah totally ignores what’s going on in Chicago in the black community, but does a lot for Africa. She could have easily built a leadership academy in Chicago. And I know it’s her money to do with what she pleases, but I just don’t get it.

  • WutizstillHERE!

They question isn’t really why but why haven’t they? Disney been getting black money and just in this decade finally has a black princess. What Im saying is that none of the other movie countries right in our own back yard are doing nothing to support those who they take money from either.

  • deanya

Lol that’s my point. This movie has the backing and market so why not “fake pride” (whatever that means) support it . And out all your favorite movies only 1 movie did big numbers ….see my point

  • Cannelle

omg I forgot about Meteor Man.

    *memories*

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

I only gave you one Black movie as a response because Google is your friend and you can read and research on your own….but judging by your grammar, you probably aren’t that literate and can’t decipher information well.

  • Ozad

Lordt!!! please do not ruin this movie’s premiere by making it political, there is plenty African actors portraying ( and making money) in the film….We don’t put this pressure on the 100’s of white themed movies released they not forced to sending donations to European countries.

  • deanya

So that movie didn’t have “fake pride” when it dropped ? Cause not everybody likes comedies or eddy

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

You know good and darn well that a lot of Black celebs feel nada about the Black American community. They would rather feel sorry for the “poor” Africans.

  • deanya

    Lol that’s not true tho

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Hellll nah Coming to America did not have all this mess attached to it. It was a comedy and people left it at that.

  • Confused

I’m soooooooooooo confused. Why would black people not find pride in this positive black representation? Why would we not feel pride in the first black marvel comic movie? Why would we not feel pride in seeing ourselves portrayed as the royalty we are? Africa is not poor. Africa is corrupt! The question no one wants to ask is why are black leaders so damn corrupt!

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

How would you know? You don’t watch superhero films? And you can stop stalking my comments now.

  • deanya

I didnt discredited anything lol I asked a question and you can’t answer it

  • Zeta Phi Beta 1920

You make a good point about giving back to the MotherLand. But, can the actors live & enjoy this for the moment?

  • You Could Never

Meteor Man? Is this a joke? Like I know who and what that is…but…okay man You got it

  • deanya

Lol no and my family is really into action movies so they talk about it

  • Phillybruh

Africa don’t need Marvel…China that is all just watch in a few years.

  • deanya

…you ever think they left it at that cause white people see blacks as clowns who can only be funny ?

  • Zeta Phi Beta 1920

    So?

  • Ozad

we all know there have been other black superhero movies, but besides Will Smith’s Hancock( where he was married to a white women) this is the first large scale multi million dollar budgeted majority black cast super hero movie based on African county. Its like Coming to America’s Zamunda on steroids

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Nah, it’s not a joke. That was a serious superhero movie. I think some Black people discredit it because it’s not Marvel or DC but many who are actual comic book fans enjoyed the film and its premise.

  • deanya

I mean I was only a kid when the movie dropped but I would think that blacks went the extra mile for this movie cause it was so black

  • You Could Never

Actually it is Marvel ma’am. Maybe YOU are the one who needs the Google you recommended below.

  • Cannelle

To me, a better Africa would mean throwing off Chinese exploiters.

  • You Could Never

    thanks for playing.

Meteor Man is a comic book spin-off of the 1993 MGM film The Meteor Man. Marvel Comics produced a six-issue limited series written by Bert B Hubbard and Dwight D Coye, and illustrated by Robert Walker and Jon Holdredge, where Meteor Man met Spider-Man and Night Thrasher. The fictional superhero was created by director/actor/writer, Robert Townsend.

  • Cannelle

Actually, this reminded me of the parody Blankman, which I liked less than Meteor Man. Ha! the 90’s.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

lol, you’re so sad and pathetic trying to discredit me and my knowledge of comics. Meteor Man was given a spin-off comic based on the screenplay that Robert Townsend created. It was not a Marvel original and only had 6 issues which had the same exact storyline as the film. So thank you for playing and maybe Google/Wikipedia should go more in-depth for you weirdos who think you know something by copying and pasting lmao

  • SumthinSweeter

Did the movie Roots donate anything to Africa or the Color Purple?

  • Confused

Who do you think those deals with China are going to benefit?

  • You Could Never

you said it was discredited bc it wasnt Marvel. You said that. Not I.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

And I was accurate. It is *not* a Marvel original comic. It was a film and then turned into a short-series comic sponsored by Marvel. It’s Robert Townsend’s brainchild, point, blank and period.

A Marvel comic is one in which Marvel’s content creators write and do the graphics for. Not one in which they basically “borrow” and give a mini-series to. But I have gone too deep with someone so shallow. Toodles dear.

  • DaughterOfaQueen

    Thank you!

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

Now Blankman was straight up comedy and hilarious. David Alan Grier was the best part of the Blankman movie lol

  • DaughterOfaQueen

    Go the fuwk away.

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

If you say so then I guesssssss

  • You Could Never
  • Phillybruh

I know who those deals are going to benefit however they are going to build the infrastructure that some places in Africa Truly needs in these times.

  • Trey

I agree…this is just a movie…and Wakanda is a fictional place that a white guy made up in Africa…..keep it 100…get ya check and keep it moving….mos def fake pride

  • morenYAHdelsur

This is a rare occasion because I actually agree with SR today. Must be the full moon LOL.

I want to see the film, but what about the real people in REAL AFRICA is right!

  • Trey

lol at you saying you voted for someone strictly based off their skin color and not their character…..

  • morenYAHdelsur

YEA! From Uganda I believe. Wtf is wrong with him?!

  • Confused

Then leave it to rot. They’re going to suck Africa dry like the rest. Africa needs to fix its problems from the inside. The leaders have been corrupt since decolonization.

  • Sistergirl

The problem in Africa is not a one fix. It is corruption and they just need to help monitor elections and have secret service investigating corruption and government money on a daily basis. One of aid is not going to solve anything. Africa is a continent, the last time I checked just one country was in debt by billions. African countries need to figure it out, it may take years but they need to figure that shit out!!!!! Build a school and it will only become run down and not maintained!!!!

  • Yardgirl

    That’s what I said!! WTF???

  • Anonymouse

smh… you don’t know what you’re talking about

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

No, Black people did not go the extra mile for Coming To America. We supported with our dollars and word-of-mouth. Literally every Black immigrant had a bootleg VHS of Coming To America.

Black people in the ’80s seemed more self-confident. We did not need all this fanfare to go see an all-Black movie.

  • vicci

    Don’t forget Spawn

Actress Olivia Cole who famously played in Roots and the miniseries Backstairs at the White House passed away from a heart attack on January 19. I just heard about it today for some reason even thought I watch the news every day.

    Rest in Heaven Ms. Olivia.

  • Omandesert

FUCK china! I remember few years ago I
was in Shanghi watching the news and Buhari was in China begging for money? Why?! Nigeria is the largest country in Africa rich in a natural resources. They have a lot of oil and when prices were high and countries (U.S.) weren’t fracking or fucking with the greedy Saudi Arabian prince, they were doing business with Nigeria. Africa needs to get its shit together and stop the corruption that has been taking place since and after colonization. Sucking China’s little wealthy dick won’t help Africa, just cripple it with co-dependency and more debt.

  • JV

I can’t tell people what to do with their money in a for-profit industry. It’s great to hear when people — whether they’re celebrities or not — donate time and money to help a good cause. But just have representations of black people, or any people who have faced oppression and persecution out there, is a good thing. If it makes people feel good and proud then I think that’s great and a good thing. Of course things can always be better, but it’s important be appreciative too.

And I don’t follow any of these actors and producers on Instagram like some do (I don’t even have that), so maybe some of them are donating to charitable causes.

I’m looking forward to seeing this movie, and I don’t really even like most comic book movies.

  • Ms.Vanilla

Thank you! Did the passion of the Christ give back to the community? That movie made over 300 million dollars and no one said anything about giving to a cause.

Hollywood remakes countless films and tv shows about the Vikings and Romans but we never see the ancient times of Africa in its golden age before it’s systematic decline by the powers that be.

Trying to curry favor, more than likely. For what, who knows.

I am just ecstatic a POSITIVE and PROFITABLE movie with a BIG BUDGET is flourishing. Reminds me how proud I was watching Coming To America at the movies back in the day. People all dressed up to see it!

Also, I’m excited to see Chadwick Boseman; my future, ex-husband, thrice removed.

  • Quitedeliteful

Marvel is only looking out for Marvel. Anyone that wants to do a small part to help Africa is welcome to do so. I have friends from Kenya, Senegal, Ghana and Cameroon. Whenever someone goes home I always send gently used clothing. That’s the best I can do. I wasn’t even going to go see this movie until all of the hype about how good it is now I can’t wait to see it…

  • Coffee1st

They’re trying to sabotage this movie like they did Birth of a Nation. Without getting all into that – NP got no backlash for any other movie he did until BOAN. Strong black portrayals are not on the agenda. I know this movie is fictional – but the talent and blackness are very real. They NEED weak, dumbed down, degenerate images of us. Images inspire and there’s hope in inspiration… and like Pres. Snow said, Hope is stronger than fear and therefore needs to be contained.

  • Dreadboi

Where’s this golden age of africa you speak of documented at??

  • 90’sBawdy

This is actually a great post.

  • Kayke

At the end of it all, black people rushing to the movies to see this is only padding Marvel’s pockets and the movie theatre owners, who most likely aren’t black. The actors have already been paid and won’t get additional funds…..and ya’ll already know the answers to the questions int he article. There is already enough funds circulating that noone should be hungry or dehydrated.

Oh boy, now Marvel is supposed to fix Africa. Jeez, our white saviors never get a break. First, Africans can stop massively raping girls, Boys, women and grown MEN to the point of creating a physical disability, for the men especially, then we can talk about Marvel I guess.

I cant wait to see it because I like Marvel franchise but of course they are milking it… LOL its Hollywood.
A lot of money was spent and I didnt have the same excitement for Blade with Wesley Snipes. A lot of people were pumped about the blade series too but I just couldnt get into like that.

  • MissHarlem

NSU alum Robert Townsend ?? hbcu stand up. And I’m straight tickled by “thanks for playing”

  • Scromes1212

I really hope this movie is good.

  • Li

Well, do people ask the same of Iron Man and Spider Man? I mean do those movies donate to the poor people of Apalachia? Or the white refugees in the Soviet Union….COME ON! Geez!

  • Li

A lot of assumptions Kayke. “The actors won’t get additional funds”….you don’t know what their contract calls for. These days, the actors sign for a base payment ($1Mil, $2Mil, $10Mil) + royalties from dvd and vod sales.

  • Lady_Elle

Ok… so nobody is going to say anything about Lupita looking like a d*ck is growing out of her head?

I look forward to seeing the movie.
It is the right of those making the movie to share the $$$ or not!

  • Li

I don’t remember any recent movies about Vikings and romans. There was a remake of Ben Hur last year that bombed big time, but I don’t remember any vikings.

  • Li

And — we don’t know what each individual actor has done for African causes. We don’t know if they have foundations that support black people or Africans…..so there’s a lot of assumptions on this board.

  • starbright9449

    Lmao

  • http://ebonynsweet.com Ebony N’ Sweet

None of these Movie studios does charity lol.. But I do believe it’s breeding false Black Pride….. It’s not the actors or the studio’s fault though. The Black Community are hypocrites in general about alot of subjects. They support Kendrick Lamar even though he speaks just like Ben Carson and Omarosa Manigault in interviews which is why i’m boycotting the film. I haven’t paid to see an Marvel movie since Iron Man 3 lol.. So i’m good. I watch it free online ha. None of these other movies from Marvel had these roadblocks it’s crazy. It could have been handled better on all levels. It’s a political film, and they should have done a better job with the soundtrack. You can’t claim it’s a pro-black film and then have Kendrick lamar on the soundtrack, they should of hired Kid Rock too lol… Hell

  • Chocolate Bliss

Exactly!!! Their contracts might even give them a whopping bonus depending on how well the movie does. Even their action figures could give them a kick back. I’m not mad at it. I’d rather see a fictional King and his people from a fictional country, showing black people in all their glory. Then to see black people playing slaves, mammys, maids chauffers, criminals, or overly sexualized.

  • hottlanta

Yep my fav as well. The scene with him and the sword and all you see is the land was breathtaking.

  • Ryan

I’m going to see this movie because it’s a rare big budget film where the main black characters aren’t slaves or maids and shows us being powerful and strong, which we are. The End.

  • Gloria

I’m not sure what was the intent of this write up….

How is genuinely wanting to see a film that depicts black people in a positive light contributing to false black pride? Why do people always try to turn something positive into something negative? Stop reaching!

  • Malcom Flex

WHAT black pride? Black pride is legal marriages with the father doing his job leading.

  • Malcom Flex

    say that

  • Holler If Ya Hear Me

What do you mean “he speaks like Ben Carson and Omarosa”? You mean he sounds intellengent when he speaks? You dumb ghetto n#ggas kill me with that. A person’s diction doesn’t define their blackness. You probably flip burgers at Checkers, freaking idiot.

  • ZZZ

I’m going to see this movie no matter what!!!!! I go to the movies to be ENTERTAINED and nothing else. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9b7d9958471bf95757a4c0c3978196a2aadb2714f076eb309d9a4415cac93c6c.gif

Black Pride is the Black LGBT weekends in Atlanta, DC, Miami, Houston, Chicago and other big cities. It also happens when down low Black women and lesbians get together for BlackLiesMatter gatherings.

  • Vagina Power

Sandra is calling out the Black queer millennials who think they are feminists pretending to be woke by suggesting ish like Black Panther will really move the culture forward. She expresses how easily impressionable they are by the white dollar. Good job, Sandra!!!

  • hottlanta

Er if you gonna do your job do it right and show it lower below the waist. Thank you.

  • ?Royalty?

Did “Coming to America” feed anybody in Africa?

And if we are really all the way honest…….you think Africa is in any way concerned about…………….*sigh*………..?

I promised I would be good.???

I can’t wait to see this movie. ???

  • Julia Lyons

Why do we always have to do shit for Africa? Damn!

  • hottlanta

I wanted to be one of those men putting that shea butter on that body. When he went and reclaimed that throne folks parted like the Red Sea. Ole boy talking about “Shaka My Lord” he stabbed his azz and fat boy butt sitting there who talked smack as a child didn’t say nothing. But when his mom betrayed him about that baby he lost it. He was like all I did for you and you do me like this. I taped the whole thing without commercials and it is 8 hours long and I watch the whole thing. Lil Hots went to South Africa and bought me back a Shaka Zulu candle and small shield which I cherish to this day. Music was Fab and the guys who did it won a Grammy this year.

  • Phillybruh

Go tell Africa they don’t need the internet and Highways. Go tell China to give back all that debt they are paying off.

  • ALLMINE?

exactly.. they sold us. they only do this shit to black Americans.. they dont guilt no other western blacks..

  • Julia Lyons

    Ikr…fuck ’em

  • Tammie Reed

    Lawd!

  • A D N

Good point SR especially since they some countries in Africa are labeled “shi t holes”

  • MythCalledLove

WTF! I’m a diehard Marvel fan since I was 12. We can’t ever do $h!t. When we get a chance to shine WE ALWAYS FU*K IT UP. This movie is about a black superhero. King of Wakanda. He is the richest, excels in science & technology. Went to Oxford University and is considered to be a genius. His country has vibranium nowhere else in the world can you find it. It is the hardest metal on earth. W/O it Captain America would hv no shield. He & his sister are experts in science and tech. His sister designed his new “suit” allowing him to transform into Black Panther anywhere at anytime (think Tony Starks). Their all female army are exceptional fighters. They are warriors that protect the country two of them are his personal bodyguards. One of their “weapons” is speaking in a language so ancient that it cannot be translated. He hangs out with a huge green giant,Two soldiers from Brooklyn that were frozen. Thor a hammer caring man from Asgard who has a brother Loki that can turn blue, a racoon name Rocket, a tree name Grot.and Sky Lord a junk collector in space his g/f is green. And he was married to Storm she can manipulate the weather. A Russian assassin Natalia turned good is now a Avenger. Hydra whose leader has a red skull. Some black folks hv ruined Black Panther. We never know how to act when we get something good. Seriously white folks hv got to be laughing at all this drama. Let this movie be just that a movie. Asking about Africa is dumb as hell. It’s not about us all the damn time. We holler for equal treatment yet when we basically get it (black supehero) we hv to find something wrong. Raccoons, trees, blind people, alcoholics I can go on. They didn’t get special treatment. Watch it just like every other Marvel movie and quit treating it like a damn telethon or charity.

  • Jygalo

Africa is a CONTINENT and contrary to ignorant popular belief the majority of the people there are not destitute smdh.

  • Yes

    Agreed.

  • Tlowe89
  • ZZZ

I did my job. If you want to see the lower part, take your ass to see on February 16….LOL

  • Tlowe89

I wish I could go see this movie but I truly hate super hero movies. I beyond emotionally support this move, because it about time they have our people in in the superhero role.

  • hottlanta

Now I got to sit down front and be in everyone’s way trying to peek.

  • SumthinSweeter

    Me too ?

  • violet_skyz

Its more complicated than that. Africa has been exploited and sucked dry of her resources. They are still being opressed with the dumbest things.

  • BlackFeeMale

Its a movie. Period. Hell yeah im spending my dough to see all these beautiful black actors and, cause i think from a cinematography perspective, its definitly celebrating and displaying Africas excellence. BUT ITS A MOVIE. PERIOD. An action movie at that. A kids mind might change about certain stuff in life after watching this but i doubt even a percentage of a nation full of grownups changing they perspective about Africa after this. I know this tho:
    1. Even tho i hate movie theaters, me n my fam showin up n showin out in.
    our kente cloth.
    2. Goin during the second week cause i dont like all that first week fuss.
    3. Always remember, me and my african lookin self and the africans still go
get treated the same EVEN tho our asses most likely gone b gettin kissed.
for a short while after the movie come out. Period. THIS MOVIE ABOUT TO.
    BE LIT!!! Im super juiced

  • violet_skyz

???? by far the biggest exploiters of Africa.

  • http://ebonynsweet.com Ebony N’ Sweet

You sound dumb. Why? Because you are speaking without all the information. Kendrick Lamar done an interview with Complex Magazine in 2015 about the Black Lives Matter protests in Ferguson. He stated that Black people are being killed because, “Black people, don’t respect themselves”. He said this about Mike Brown. So yes, he does sound like Ben Carson an Republican trump loving idiot. So f**k you… You’re a Coon if you still love him.

  • SweetTEE

The movie sure wasn’t financed by all black people and yet there is a mostly black cast…and they will be getting paid. Im sure someone will be donating, seems like basic PR. This movie is about to bring so much pride during the climate of this country. Look at the message behind the movie. I’m feeling this, Luke Cage & Black lightnening.

  • Ryan

This right here!! For real, thank you!

  • GIJoeJones

This Movie, in my opinion, is about uplifting the hearts and minds of those of African descent. In both real life and fiction, the narrative is almost always about blacks achieving success in a white system, resisting white oppression, or just being a regular person inside of white society. This story appears to be about a world where blacks have carved out their own existence, a world where a just, fair, and powerful black king leads his people fearlessly. This movie is about telling black people that this is what black excellence could look like, let’s become this.
I don’t think it has much to do with the actual continent of Africa, as much as telling the people from that continent that there is greatness in you.

  • http://www.swedishsoul.com Christina Duphorn Zehnder

Preach….I am going. Marvel comics all the way… Cannot wait for the cameo with Stan Lee and see who else from Marvel will show up.

  • Doink_Ahanahue

    THANK YOU!!!
Black people are always hollering about what someone else gets or has that they (we) don’t. Here is a super hero movie based ON BLACK PEOPLE! But the only question becomes about what’s being given to Africa? Are you asking that for every Black movie that has come out?
Go to whatever ticket purchasing platform (Fandango, Atom, etc or theatre) BUT A TICKET and SUPPORT THE MOVIE. Stan Lee is an old white man that has made movies and comic books for years and made tons of money in the process. Don’t hate on that, just enjoy the movie!

  • Anunnaki

But who allowing them to be suck dry, the africans, which it make no dam sense

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Please don’t let the plight of REAL Africans discourage you from making Marvel Studio executives richer. ?

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

The Marvel Studio millionaires thank you.

  • Lucy

I’m confused, did the producers of Hotel Rwanda and Invictus donate money and help build schools? These movie studios are “for profit” companies.

  • Renee26

I wish a mf would… they’d see me act a plum fool that day! I hope they stay closed

  • Layah Jhene

Lol what kills me is negroes acting like this is the first black super hero movie ever. And Sandra is right. Them white Marvel Millionaires about to cash out on black folks and won’t donate a dime to our people. People stuck on the movie and not the reality

  • ZRoJoTheLezBeyond

So Auntie, does this mean you won’t be going to see the movie in the theater?

  • ZRoJoTheLezBeyond
  • Dowoop

OMG – What are your emoji’s doing???

  • V Dubb

    ???? Yes!!!!

  • V Dubb

Oh black people….the ones who will see Jesus’ return and find something cynical to say about It. “White folks are just trying to distract you.” Give it a rest and relax watching a well made movie with some of our best and beautiful people. My God

  • Ryan

Some people sit by quietly when movies like The Help are released but for some reason get very irritated when even semi-positive images of African Americans enter the mainstream media.

If you don’t want to see the movie, that’s cool. It’s a free country still (for now anyway). But a full court press of negativity from random avatars claiming to be black screams jealousy and determination to put down any and all positive images of black people.

Not buying it. But I am buying tickets AND popcorn for me and a few friends and their kids.

  • Branch Davidian

It doesn’t matter if one dime gets donated. The takeaway is what Black People, in cinema, and in general, are capable of. For too long, Blacks have been conditioned to accept subservient, minority roles both in film and in life. Instead of embracing the victim mentality, Blacks can show that success is tangible and possible in ANY environment.

  • wiseone

It’s a movie – why all the negativity about a dam movie. I know why.

  • MythCalledLove

No disrespect since this is your garden however what you are saying would/should apply to almost every company/brand. This movie is about Black Panther returning to his country after his father was killed. That was the movie was Avengers:Age of Ultron. So this is not Marvel just picking some random black superhero and making a movie. Black Panther is a part of a storyline. Why is it everytime it is someone white we start asking for $h!t and placing demands and stay quiet as church mouse when it’s a black person. We always expect payment and start bringing up Africa. Wakanda is not even real. The same characters were in Vienna dies does Africa still apply? It’s not that serious. Every movie with a “black” cast and written by white folks they need to pay a toll? Do not pass go? Our own damn people that are in the position to give money to Africa are they excused? Hell do they even help blacks here? Roots on t.v. and Underground. Coming to America plenty of “African” characters are in movies directed by white people. Seriously can we just quit. Marvel may not hv donated to Africa but it showcased talented black actors. If your calling out Marvel then I suggest you call the black actors in the movie as well.

  • Nichole Congo

Sandra why are you always such a hater and post nothing but negativity when it comes to black films? SMH

  • MythCalledLove

    Add Coming to America

  • MythCalledLove

And the soundtrack for this movie is FIRE!

  • MythCalledLove

Why does everything hv to be so damn serious. Yes blacks should be proud of the damn movie. White folks hv had their hand in plenty of black movies. White agenda?? WTH?? It’s a damn comic book character. Why when it has to do with blacks we always hv to bring up the white man issue. I think everyone should be proud of this movie and the superhero because a black billionaire genius with a sister that is also a genius is a role model. We can’t be happy about the movie?? Sometimes a movie is just a movie and no-one should be vilified for liking the movie. I think intelligent people can see the movie for just what it is a good movie. We should be proud of this superhero it goes deeper than the damn white man. We cry when we are not in movies how we are portrayed in movies. Your so busy looking for what’s wrong with the movie that you can’t appreciate what’s right.

  • The WholeTruth

Dear black person (NEGRO) : The question “EVERYBODY” wants to know..DID YOU DONATE a dime to AFRICA? Trying to talk for all Marvel Studio “white millionaires”on their donations to Africa? Last time I check, the black actors in this movie making decent money as well. Did you confirm their donations and contributions to Africa? SMH. For the record, Marvel Studios( yes, white rich people and maybe some blacks) have given donations on much-needed learning materials (education) for as many as 123,000 kids in Nepal, Haiti (Yes, its not Africa), and the U.S. At least they did something for some minorities to say the least. Quick playing the race card game and this bull talk “We dont know reality”. Now enjoy the movie….And KEEP your Negativity “#BEPROUD#

  • Layah Jhene

Shut your coon ass up. #SitDown

  • K_LE

Sandra please don’t act like you care about the well being of Africans. You are a self hating Trump supporter who cares nothing about the people who share your skin color. Of course you would find something negative to say about a black film that doesn’t have us all looking like slaves and gangsters.

  • The WholeTruth

She always does that. Stirring up negativity. BOSSIP supporting the movie..but she got to hate..It’s in her DNA to bash her people.

  • JRock

it was a joke. Get a sense of humor. I still would not sleep with Jay. Bills be damned!

  • The WholeTruth

“Shut Your Coon Ass Up”? That’s your NEGRO response Angry Black Woman? Okay.

  • MythCalledLove

I wanted to address this false pride argument. I think it is black people glad, proud whatever you want to call it but finally we see a black man or blacks in general in a positive way. Billionaire scientists, Sister that’s a genius and excels in technology. So now your kid doesn’t hv to buy Superman or Batman. It’s not supposed to save the world. But I am glad to see this regardless of who is making money. Whites will not like it because this is not a stereotypical black movie. Just the fact that he is even a major character and one that actually puts him above major white characters. This character was created before the Blank Panther movement and has been a character all these years and he gets a movie and we can only say that’s not good enough..

  • MythCalledLove

Oh I forgot before you see the movie you should watch Captain America : Civil War on Netflix. This will help you understand the movie a bit.

  • The WholeTruth

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

I also pointed out the negative aspects of 12 Years a Slave, and I was among the few bloggers dragging Nate Parker and his slave film Birth of Nation. People were defending Nate. Who is the hater? Black Panther is JUST a movie. It won’t save the world. ?

  • violet_skyz

    yup, no arguing that one!

  • BlackFeeMale

Yaaaaaaasssss!!!!! I gotta go look at whos on it!!!

  • BlackFeeMale

    Wat u mean by that?

  • http://www.swedishsoul.com Christina Duphorn Zehnder

I’m starting to think Sandra is not black. She has not mentioned this not 1 time…. Guess it is not important to her.

  • Renee26

    Not important at all

  • deanya

Lol yeah just like most black people

  • deanya

So because black people are dressing up and going tell extra mile it’s fake pride lol OK

  • Doink_Ahanahue

    Wow!
1st, you’ve never responded to me before so thanks!

My point though, was that every time something happens it does not need to be a political movement or whatever. Stan Lee created the character for whatever reason. But I don’t hear people holding the Black directors to the same standard when they make tons of money off their movies.

  • K_LE

Of course you pointed out the negative aspects, it’s what you do when it comes to big budget black films. I don’t remember saying it would save the world. It’s just crazy how you find any and every reason to spread negativity when it comes to something positive for black people, but you’ll celebrate anything Trump related every chance you get. It’s sad

  • kikipoo

First off, thank you, Sandra, for your write up! I personally support Trump, though he’s not perfect, and I think you are a very smart woman who possesses the spirit of truth. Not everyone can see through the media hype to the truth. You can’t put Trump supporters in a box because they simply come from all walks of life and these are unique times. Back to the movie! Just saw Black Panther today. I loved it and found many things about it to be extremely inspiring. I want to address the praying to the ancestors piece and spiritual idolatry/adultery in the movie. I understand it is the culture, but why pray to ancestors when you can pray to the One who created the ancestors, and you- the source, God himself? This is idol worship, and if you want to please God, you pray to Him and praise Him and Him only, not your ancestors. Romans Chapter 1. “They served created things rather than the Creator, who is to be forever praised. Amen.” Who do you think created Africa? Who do think inspires people with ideas in their heart and spirit? Not the ancestors. It’s God. But I think I understand why they did that. Because of the way Christianity was used against slaves, and that would be interpreted as Christian. But aside from Christianity, praying to the Creator and not the created is just common sense. God wants a personal relationship with us. The movie aside from that was awesome on so many levels, and I’m from the Bay, so to see Oakland incorporated and tied together with the Black Panther movement was truly amazing. That’s my word y’all. Peace.

  • kikipoo

    lol!

  • kikipoo

P.s. I just want to add something ironic, that we noticed in the movie. WE DID NOT SEE NOT ONE PERSON EATING THROUGH THE WHOLE MOVIE. Hahaha. That was interesting. Perhaps a silent show of solidarity with the starving in Africa and all disadvantaged in the US? idk.

  • Africanist Africanist

Good movie but it portrays false hope .. Being living in Africa for 47 years now .. Will never see a city like that maybe I must move to marvel studios that’s where fiction starts and ends….
