Crystal Smith and Shaffer Chimere Smith Jr

Ne-Yo‘s wife Crystal Renay Smith is catching heat for describing her baby son’s hair as “Hawaiian silky”. Crystal, who is mixed race, says social media users were upset because they are uncomfortable seeing mixed-race couples together.

Crystal, 28, angered social media users when she said her 22-month-old son Shaffer Chimere Smith Jr. had “Hawaiian Silky” hair, aka good hair.

A TMZ airport hustler caught up with the R&B couple at LAX airport and asked her to comment on the controversy.

“I love my child, and I quoted something that my sister-in-law — his sister — said to me,” she said, referring to husband Ne-Yo’s sister. Crystal said she was simply requesting suggestions for products to tame her toddler son’s softly coiled hair.

Crystal said the ensuing criticism inspired her to launch her own children’s haircare line very soon.

When asked why she thought people were so critical of her comment, she replied, “Because they assume that I’m not mixed with black — I absolutely am — and they don’t like black man being with white women or other races.”

She added: “It’s just really stupid. I don’t get into the stereotypes: I will check you but I’m learning to do better at that. So it is what it is.

In October 2017, Crystal and Ne-Yo announced they are expecting another child together.

Ne-Yo has 2 children with his ex-fiancée, Atlanta socialite Monyetta Shaw.
