watermelon slices

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) issued a recall warning for Georgia residents to check their refrigerators for pre-cut watermelon slices and fruit salads that may be contaminated with fast-spreading Salmonella bacteria.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Caito Foods LLC recalled its fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fruit medley products on Friday after dozens of people were sickened by Salmonella.

At least 60 people in nine states, including Georgia, are confirmed to have contracted Salmonella from pre-cut watermelon slices, melons and other fresh fruit.

The CDC says 31 of those people have been hospitalized. So far, there have been no deaths reported.

The fruit products were packaged in Caito Foods LLC's Indianapolis facility and shipped to Costco, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon in nine states. The fruit is packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers.

The CDC says people should discard any fresh-cut watermelon, melon or fruit salad products bought from these retailers.

Kroger's and Publix Supermarkets in Georgia are not affected by the recall.

“The pre-cut melon and melon in pre-cut fruit salads sold in Kroger’s Georgia stores are sourced from a different supplier,” said Felix Turner, corporate affairs manager for Kroger’s Atlanta Division in a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "However, if a Kroger customer has any concerns about pre-cut melon and/or pre-made fruit salads purchased at a Kroger store, they may return it to the store for a full refund.”

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include: diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and abdominal pain. The symptoms begin about 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts about a week.

Contact your doctor or healthcare provider if your symptoms worsen; Diarrhea lasts for more than two days; you have bloody stools or a high fever (103 F or higher).

    Agreed.

And the stores Mark the price up for the convenience. $5.99 for 1/4 pound typically soggy chopped watermelon. Just buy whole and cut fresh and crisp at home.

Lady was going nuts in the store because they didn’t have any turkey patties I said why don’t you get the ground turkey and pat them out? She said it’s just me and my son I am not about to go through all that...people have reached a new level of laziness

  • goat

    Whew, Thank You Publix.

  • Trace da Ace

damn....glad I get the whole watermelon and cut that myself....hell..nothing is safe anymore...

  • Rhyme and Reason

It's scary that the best used or expiration date is so long? What are they using to preserve this cut fresh fruit, and where is being processed, here or abroad?

  • Alicia.Ashe

Buy and cut your own, you’ll get more from it.

  • Kemi

You get your money worth by cutting up your own. And it helps in maintaining sanitary as well...

  • FukkFolks2018

Lawd. Even judgement on folks and their grocery habits. Not everyone has the gift of time. I personally dont like pre-cut fruit. But hell I understand why folks cop it. Safety first and sorry people got sick.

  • Kanyade

i pick up pre-cut for convenience. i suck at cutting mangoes and melons and such.

  • millz

I don’t believe the whole organic thing anymore... how are there seedless organic grapes ?? the key is having seeds right?

  • justlooking

Most ladies born in the south don't buy precut ANYTHING.

I just started buying pre-cut greens

It spoils quickly, or it's laced with germs and germs from folks neither regions. IMO

  • FukkFolks2018

I work about 50 hours a week and commute about 15 (30-45 minutes each way). Im sure there are many out there like me. In fact I know there are, bc I pass the same cars most days to and from. I am blessed bc my guy works much closer and gets off much earlier. He is able to wash, and food prep and I just go home and drop that shit in pots and make it happen lol. And we have a 13 yo that lives there too that her sister and I have taught well and can cut the heck outta some stuff too lol. She cut up some stuff on Sat. for tacos. But damn. everyone aint able. They in here calling folks lazy etc. Folks are BUSY and/or might cannot cut.

  • FukkFolks2018

See below. I get it then again... I dont. Ladies of the south (or anywhere) are no longer homemakers or taking in laundry or keeping kids to make ends meet and havent been for a long time. In other words at home or got the time. I cheat and buy pre-cut stuff all the time. Not fruit. But some veggies that I can re-wash on my own. I sure do. See not a thing wrong with it.

  • GuestSTAR

I bought those precut collards before and they had so many stems, I was so pi$$ed. Never again.

  • FukkFolks2018

I hate pre-cut collards like in a bag for this very reason. I do get some from this grocery store that are washed and leaves all lined up by size and they look pretty etc. Re-wash them jokers and literally can cut the stem dead out the middle in one fell swoop.

  • justlooking

I feel like I get more when I just buy it. Nothing wrong with it, I figured I chop it vs paying the extra 1 or 2 dollars. Years ago I bought precut onions and they tasted horrible, so Iono do it anymore. Yes, most aren't homemakers. I pray to the HIGH heavens. working sucks. I could be laying down ret now and watching somebody court room debate. TUUHHHHHHHHH

  • justlooking

Up here they DO no wash the leaves...it like they pulled out the ground and no hose or water no where around.

  • FukkFolks2018

Hard pass. This is like getting greens from the Farmers Market lol. They got pulled up literally this morning lol. I can only do that much work for collards on Thanksgiving and Easter.

  • Kanyade

yeah i see all the judgment going on below. not all suthrun' womenz are adept at cutting a melon (me) lol. but i can shell the heck out of some peas! different strokes, different folkses.

You don't even have to make a mess. There are inexpensive gadgets out there that will slice, cut, chop and dice in one swoop for you.

In her defense, the Jennie o burgers are pre seasoned and less expensive than the ground turkey! At least here in nyc... the burgers of 6 are about 8 bucks while the ground meat is upwards of 11 dollars ?

He said yeah.????? He said I likes to add onions, seasoning and worchestire sauce. I hook it up? these people eat theirs plain. ?

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Wow!!! They listed Kroger as well in another post. No more pre-cut for me.

  • Alextra Ballard

Dass me...they need to hurrup and handle this asapidy... I was just in publix grabbing for the cut up cantaloupe and watermelon. Pre cut cost more, put to me it's worth it. I refuse to lift a big as watermelon.

  • Stab u in neck

You should be come aquatinted with a heterosexual black male I bet he will have not problem lifting it or cutting it

  • Alextra Ballard

lmao, nah umma pass... something tells me he gon wanna lift more than my watermelon.smh

  • RealATLPeach36

Exactly I put more on here but I deleted bc her petty ass start crying ? she showed her as at a farm...talking about she rather go to Whole Foods embarrassed me, so I was going to embarrass her ass on here.

She with me for the summer, her mother paid me, I told her butt I do not do refunds I’ll send you back to Chicago and it’s DEADLY ?

  • BadAss Will

Thankfully I don't do precut, they do not be sweet enough for me...

  • SumthinSweeter

Dang right... I love ground turkey over beef. I add onions to almost everything anyway and sometimes the Lipton Onion Seasoning packets are all you need for a good taste. I mix that in and the flavor is so perfect.

  • SumthinSweeter

    lmaooooooo

  • Mama Dee’s Wig Maker

It's like that sometimes...I bought some from Publix this past weekend and Im happy their watermelon is ok

  • Marlika

? You making me want a ? burger.

  • SumthinSweeter

    Lol, sorry. Grocery store run?

  • pure_rachet

I used to do catering and can break down fruit in seconds. Easy for me but I understand why its not easy for most. It kills me when I can buy a whole melon for $1 but the precut portion is $4

  • pure_rachet

I bought a pre washed bag of salad and it had a roach in it. NEVER AGAIN!

  • Kayke

Chances you take with convenience....I can get a whole watermelon for $7 ...
Not paying the same price for 1/6 of one because somebody cut it up.

  • justlooking

I just re read this.....I am tickled.

  • Kemi

Exactly I don’t trust those pre bagged salads/ veggies.

  • Queen B

Thank God I only shop at Publix and Krogers for my produce!!

  • joel adams

I buy mine from unc out the back of his truck. Im ok right?

  • joel adams
