Maleka Jackson

A Tennessee woman who died tragically during a boat explosion in the Bahamas was celebrating her 15th wedding anniversary with her husband.

Maleka Jackson, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was enjoying a romantic vacation with her husband, Tiran Jackson, when a boat they were riding in suddenly exploded around 9 p.m. off the coast of Barraterre Island, CBS News reports.

The couple left their 12-year-old son with a relative before they traveled to the Bahamas to celebrate their decade and a half marriage.

“Maleka would be I guess what I call a shooting star,” said her father, Melvin Grimes, in an interview with CBS News. “She had a life that kind of stayed straight on the course and it was a life that brought a lot of joy and a lot of support and love into the lives of others.”

via PEOPLE -- According to CNN, 10 American tourists and two Bahamians were on board the 40-foot chartered boat when the engine exploded.Video footage obtained by WFFF showed people jumping from a nearby boat and swimming to the burning vessel. Four Americans were airlifted to a Florida hospital, according to CNN.

Grimes told CBS that Tiran suffered burns and was taken to a Florida hospital.

A GoFundMe page has been created to raise donations for Jackson's funeral expenses.

  • Fire & Ice

!!Praying for Strength for her son and husband!!!!!

  • Alextra Ballard

The last contribution I made was for Haiti...I will contribute to Mrs Jackson GoFundMe. My Condolences to her family. My heart grieves for her 12yr old son.

  • Bossy704

Go Fund Me is not an insurance plan especially when you have children. If you can afford to go the Bahamas you can afford life insurance. Sorry not sorry.

  • Melinated Goddess??

    Looks at your picture.....
Sees that life has delt you a shitty hand already. It is what it is.

  • Rainbowbelow

She was the only one who died. There were nine people who were injured.

  • Willetta

    The GoFundMe may be bogus.

  • MJF

Right. This b*tch isn't even remorseful for the fact that someone just lost a wife and mother. People are so concerned with the wrong sh*t

  • Rainbowbelow

How do u know she paid for this trip?

  • BeUtFullSoul

    :'(
    My condolences to the family.

  • Nikkiknows

Wow, if you hadn't posted this I wouldn't have even known there were black people on the boat, all I'm seeing is stories about the girl who lost her legs and isn't awake yet...

  • Karen Brady

I've blocked only 3 or 4 ppl in this garden and this bytch is one of them.

  • Melinated Goddess??

I can be mean when I'm ready. But what she said was uncalled for and unnecessary.

  • Karen Brady

Same here and I can only imagine the comment. Again, this is why I had to block. Some folk are just plain NASTY for no good reason.

  • Phillybruh

Who says they didn't have life insurance, and they still have too bring her back to the states. Which has too be handled by a local funeral home and that costs money.

  • Miami8981

Their son expected both his mama and his daddy to come home to him. Mothers and sons have a special bond as does daddies and their daughters. Hopefully and prayerfully this child in a few years will smile again although the loss of his mother will forever leave a void in his heart.

As for the owner of the boat if it is true that he had no insurance and the boat was in disrepair they need to lock him up like yesterday for a long time.

Who goes on vacation, an anniversary trip no less, and does not come home EVER? Why do people take chances with other people's lives?

  • ChocolateChick84

This literally broke my heart. That poor baby's parents went to celebrate their anniversary and didn't come back home at all or like they left. Bless his heart and condolences to him, their family, friends, and her sorors. Speedy recovery and comfort to her husband.

  • ChocolateChick84

And avid soccer player, so sad.... Bless her heart!

  • Mec-One

    Condolences .....

This is why I don't do that extra ish on vacation.
A few years back in Cancun we saw emergency crew pulling some dude out the water who fell from hi up in the sky while parasailing. The rope snapped and the boat took off cause they were uninsured. Dude lived but he was broken up something awful

  • Lady_Elle

Awe... this just touches my heart!
My sincere condolences to the family, friends and other loved ones!
I am so sorry for your loss!

  • SumthinSweeter

Right! Biased ass media outlet's always do that that.

  • Yui

That’s so sad. Heard about this on the news. One of the passengers, a young woman lost her legs in the explosion. Awful.

  • Bossy704

How have you blocked me? Do tell! I'm genuinely curious.

  • Bossy704

Why is that? My life is actually quite lovely.

  • Bossy704

I'm not nasty. I used to sell insurance and this is epidemic in the Black community.

  • Bossy704

I don't care because I don't know them. You don't really care either. Just wanted a sassy comment. CONGRATULATIONS!

  • Bossy704

I am not mean. I used to sell insurance and this is epidemic in the Black community.

  • MJF

    "I don't care because I don't know them."
    ----------------------------------
God bless you and your heart. I'll just leave it as that.

  • Bossy704

They have been married long enough to have insurance regardless of who paid for the trip.

  • MJF

Let's stop giving this ugly chick clout. I'm ready for July 4, who else is???

  • Bossy704

Regardless of how I look I used to sell insurance which Black families don't tend to have. These are facts.

  • MJF

Lol girl bye with your commission based job. Do something and focus on ya heart

  • Bossy704

It was an assumption. I have the same info you do. Whatever they had it wasn't enough.

  • Bossy704

I have a full time job now. That was over a decade ago. I USED to sell insurance. It was PAST TENSE. Did you finish high school?

  • Bossy704

    I'll take my blessing. THANKS!!!!

  • Real Talk With Kizzy Rock

You do not have to know someone to have compassion in your heart .Only a heartless individual would feel NO remorse BUT just remember, your time will come and it could be unexpected like hres was and hopefully others will show remorse to you and not talk about her heartless and cruel you are

  • Real Talk With Kizzy Rock

    #hers

  • Bossy704

You are not the first person to call me heartless or emotionless. I am only kind because of how I was raised and intellectually wanting to do the right thing. I feel little for others - this is true.

  • Karen Brady

"This is why I don't do that extra ish on vacation." Lol.. personally I like to lay my fat azz on the beach cuz I'm scared of every damn thing.

  • Yoni7

Oh no! I keep seeing about the one chick having her legs amputated. My condolences to THIS family.

  • Eileen

uninsured? really how ghetto is that! Stay on mainstreet when you on these island because er-body got their own little side hustle para sailing, water-sking busines and then look what hapens!

  • SummerBaby

This is sad af. ? RIP! ??

  • Melinated Goddess??

You're an uncouth jackass! I don't give a damn what you use to due. What you said wasn't called for sour face! F.Y.I this isn't a black people problem, it's an IRRESPONSIBLE person problem. Your average person walking around DOESN'T HAVE A LIFE INSURANCE POLICY. Why? Well because your average person isn't thinking about dying, despite it being a natural part of life. Plus some people are vultures and will try to of your top for the insurance money.

  • Phil Mccrackenzme

That's right, critique the person that just lost their life.

Is it really the time to make THAT comment??? ?

  • Bossy704

Yes. It may help someone who is not properly insured. Expressing sympathies does nothing for this family or anyone else.

  • Bossy704

The average person should plan for the loved ones they could leave behind at any moment. I also didn’t have to resort to profanity to make my point. Who is “uncouth” in this conversation again?

  • IamAllnatural

The news here said Maleka Grimes was killed, I had a feeling she was black.

  • Strappyheels

Wait, wait, wait!! A cruise was affordable but life insurance wasn’t?

  • IamAllnatural

    ?????

  • Strappyheels

<——-Well, this Blackwoman and her family did!!

  • dinedaaka

She is my Soror. I'm almost positive she had insurance!

  • dinedaaka

As someone of Haitian descent, I appreciate this.

  • Logan Roberts

    Sounds good to me ?

  • Logan Roberts

I had to go back and read the full story. Soon as I read the title, I said the husband did it. So sad?

  • IssaOpinion

We get it you Used to sell insurance in the black community. Which is a total rip-off. I'm sure the husband or wife was employed full-time which would covered her with life insurance. Stop being so negative lady if your worried donate to the Go fund me. If not just RIP HER and chill.

  • Ms. Jackson

Ive been paying for my own life insurance since I was 19 years old. Also, I have a blood disorder and have the best insurance out there. In any event, I disagree with your statement.

  • hottlanta

Lil Hots called me and said she knew her personally. How sad.

  • hottlanta

I guess you won't be driving your car at home. You pass by people who die in accidents everyday but you still crank that car up and keep it moving. This has nothing to do with vacation. When it time for you to go you gonna go If someone dies in their sleep. What you gonna do sit up all night with your eyes open and be afraid to go to sleep.

  • hottlanta

There are such things as sand fleas on the beach. What cha gonna do wear a coat.

  • hottlanta

If it was a single woman with a designer bag folks would be going in but married folks gets all kinds of passes.

  • Ms. Jackson

don't care because I don't know them. ???????? Wowwwww. What an awful thing to say ???

  • Ms. Jackson

    ?? ?? ?? ??

  • Ms. Jackson

?? ?? And I'm thinking...?? She must be 'liking' her own comment. After every comment she makes... All u see is that
    one lonely up vote

  • Kimberly King

I hate I read the last sentence about the Gofundme ..... she didn’t have life insurance? I would think a couple married that long and with a young son would have some things set up just in case. Nevertheless, R.I.P.

  • Kimberly King

Lmao okay I don’t feel bad about my comment anymore. Like .... I know looks aren’t everything, but judging from the pic they don’t look like a broke family. IDK.

  • Real Talk With Kizzy Rock

Well at least your not in denial. I personally do not believe people are born heartless and emotion-less. Something along the way has harden them. Ex; Abuse, neglect, abandonment and the list goes on. it is easy to say, I was just born this way but it is not true. God created us to have love and compassion for one another. so I hope you tap into your soul to figure out what has caused you to be this way. best regards

  • interestingconcept1

I heard that! Me either. A couple on their honeymoon, scuba diving, wife died, husband was unresponsive don't know if he made, it ..no insurance form man who gave the lessons either

  • Mec-One

I'm speaking on how no one wants to sustain a major injury or die while on vacation because of someone else's blatent negligence ...... foh

  • the chosen one

    lmfao again.

  • Monty Bee

The GoFundMe is not for burial expenses or even the husband's medical care. It's for support in the times to come. Most folks don't have million dollar policies. Or they don't contemplate the loss of both parents' income, where one parent has died and the other has become permanently disabled in one incident. This isn't the first time I've seen or heard comments like this from life insurance salespeople, and I am sure it won't be the last. You all really give the industry a bad name.

  • speakinmymind

    an epidemic...sheesh

  • gail jones

    Girl bye!

  • gail jones

Somebody probably hoping you'll go ahead and die, so they can collect.

  • gail jones

You don't need sh?t, just make sure your black aš? is covered. It doesn't have to be for burial, it could be for the little boy therapy, college, etc. You pitiful fool.

  • Carmen

    who is lil hots?

  • hottlanta

Just because someone else get's VD ain't gonna stop me from getting some "D".

  • hottlanta

    My other half.

  • Diva4lyfe

Plus her husband had to be amputated so that goes towards helping the family out as well. WTH life insurance got to do with that. Come on be realistic about things you say.

  • Doink_Ahanahue

I don't Parasail. There are no laws that govern it's safety or ensuring the crews are properly trained in most places. Normally they boat rides are ok though

  • MsNewNew

That's what my initial thought was but then I saw this posted somewhere regarding the situation and it made me understand a little more. Condolences to her family.

"One might ask, “Why Go Fund Me?”...”Life insurance should take care of everything and health insurance too, right?”...Well, multiple surgeries in two different countries, flights for both, Tiran and Maleka, from the Bahamas back to the US, travel expenses for their family to stay near him in Florida when they are based out of Alabama and Tennessee. More surgeries and rehab for Tiran due to him suffering an amputation and other injuries. Initial funeral expenses for Maleka to be brought back to US soil and then home to have a proper Home Going Service. These are things we pray that we will never have to consider, but unfortunately this is this family’s reality.

If you can, please donate. This goes to Tiran and Maleka’s initial and immediate needs, as well as, their son Cameron who is our bright shining star. Maleka is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Tiran is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc."

  • MsNewNew

My thoughts as well but then I saw this posted and it made a bit more sense to me.

Hmm. She’s a soror. Didn’t know that. I’ll do more research into their funding page. Thanks for the info !

  • Patricia

me, too. ive been watching all those crime watch stories on youtube though. it changes your perspective about situations and people. this sounds like a tragic accident though...unless the explosion was intended for somebody elses spouse for a hefty life insurance payout on that boat...mmhmm
