Pastor John Gray sparked a heated debate among women online after he said his wife "birthed" him so he could be a better man.

Pastor Gray made the controversial statements during an appearance on Atlanta's "Sister Circle" daytime talk show on Thursday.

"The wife that I chose is better than the man that I am," Gray told hosts Rashan Ali and Syleena Johnson, who both seemed at a loss for words.

He continued: "She's a coat: I still can't fit her. She's bigger than me. She's had to cover me while I grow up."

But his metaphors got even more confusing when he said, "She's a covering, not a lid. Because if a man marries a lid, she'll stop your dream."

Pastor Gray added: "My wife has endured more pain birthing me than both of our children."

After the uproar among women on social media, the pastor's wife of 26 years, Aventer Gray, posted a lengthy message on her Instagram page attempting to clarify her husband's statements. But she only deepened the confusion.

"A RIB (wife)...covers vital organs of the body. It’s functionality is for Protection, Support, and Respiration. So, I can see things he can not," she wrote.

But many say the roles are reversed in the Gray household, and that the pastor's wife emasculated him by being the provider and the protection that a man should normally be for his family.

What do you think?

Wow! @realjohngray! This is beautiful! I’ve seen this floating and had opportunity to see some dialogue. I love dialogue...here is my response...A RIB (wife)...covers vital organs of the body. It’s functionality is for Protection, Support, and Respiration. So, I can see things he can not. God gave us wives heightened discernment to Protect from some of the oblivion that our husbands face. We Support in the best ways...we stand, we build, we give legs to vision, and it isn’t always happily ever after, in fact it’s “Jesus be with me” while this purpose is being birthed...YES BIRTH OF PURPOSE not actual birthing of a man. His mother did that part, but as wives, there are things that life can be given to in ways he may not have been able to produce alone, bringing me to my next function of a rib, the Respiration, meaning the act of breathing. Sometimes, it takes a wife to give the breath to make the vision alive, and it’s taking place simultaneously with the growing, development, and healing of broken places that had nothing to do with us!!! Some pain we walk into based on the upbringing of our husbands or experiences that limited or crippled his process that had nothing to do with us! Pain is a part of the process, not continuous pain, but pain that actually produces fruit and gets us all to Destiny! Don’t tell me one thing about a woman isn’t supposed to cover. One of my degrees is Cardiopulmonary Science and I’m a pastor. I may have a few correlations to share! ????? Wth is he talking about.... I’m sorry some people just shouldn’t speak. I’m glad he and his wife found each other because they stupid butts deserve each other. Stop trying to create your own analogies.

He's top heavy. Das' all I got.

Most people may not understand this, so I’m going to sit back and enjoy reading the comments!

Good for you! Whatever works for your marriage.

Pastor John Gray is so awesome and a man who has an awesome heart and love for God's people..A weak mind could never understand what he meant. His wife had to put up with a lot of his mess and he was probably difficult to deal with but she stuck beside him and covered him still in prayer and love. Sometime us men can be difficult to deal with but it takes a strong woman to deal with a "man" still becoming a "man". A woman by default is already a nurturer and she had to pretty much rebirth her husband to be the man he is now. His words are very powerful...

  • Sircaput

Are you really that shallow that you did not understand what he was saying...I wish you had took your own advice before you made this post.

I get it. All of it. *shrugs*

Here is what, every woman has a threshold of tolerance and what they can and cannot endure because of love. She felt that she should stick in there with him because she feels the Ministry in him was bigger than the messy she had to deal with in him. I cannot agree or disagree with her heart. At least he openly admitted he was a mess when she met him and acknowledge the hell he sent her through. Most men will deny deny deny that they are the cause of their woman's pain when they are still incomplete and emotionally unable to be faithful. We see this on "Unreality TV" everyday.

The part that is scary to me are the women who are dealing with pain that may be deeper than the pain he is explaining and in turn make the decision to stick it out with this guy who may be physically abusing her or mentally destroying her esteem and soul thinking that if she did it and they made it to the "Other Side" she can too.. and it end up destroying everything about her or he leaves and she spent years trying to emulate this message...

  • Soda

Was he a pastor at the time his wife had to put up with a lot of his mess, and what was it?

  • Victorious82

Seems like he’s being unnecessarily deep for no reason just say it straight so the folks can understand you without all the code. That aside, I understood his point. What’s wrong helping your man grow and become an even better man for you? I don’t get the whole, “it’s not my responsibility to help my man grown” mind set.

  • SJ

I completely agree. Their message is getting lost in translation.

Pastors are so used to speaking in figurative language, they don't leave it in the pulpit. You could be having coffee with them talking about something simple and they start talking in parables...lol

So, I kind of get what their saying. It seems like it works for them so hey...

  • ClaireHuxtable

Miss Sandra, I don't think they've been together for 26 years. I think he said 8. Please verify. Thank you.

  • tintin

he loves her, he's just professing what a great wife she is and more men should do this.

  • Sircaput

I'm not sure but it is possible he could have been or even a young pastor who was still growing and still being molded by God..but whatever the mess was why does it matter, he is sill human and as humans no one is perfect and we continue to make mistakes but we learn from them. Yes we do hold Pastors at higher standards but you have to have the understanding that they fail sometimes to, and if you do not understand that you will always be disappointed.

  • ClaireHuxtable

I got it, but can see how he may have lost a few folk on that journey...
Actually it's quite a compliment to her that he knows he's a better person through her influence. Most men feel that way but seldom admit it.

  • Rainbowbelow

If thats how he feels, so be it. My dad has said on multiple occasions that if it wasn't for my mom, he would probably be in jail or dead.

  • Nik

Haha! I can't! This is so cute. Good morning?

  • Nik

    Thx TinTin. Plain and simple.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

"Seems like he’s being unnecessarily deep for no reason just say it straight so the folks can understand you"
    ------
Exactly. He could have just said his wife is supportive and encouraging, and helped him become the man he is today.
These nigroes kill me, always trying to be deep. smh. Sometimes, simpler is better.

  • Nik

I think he was trying to big her up and it didn't come off well. The message could have been simplified but Syleena was busy egging him on.

  • Tlowe89

I don’t see any analogies in my message. Do you? No I’m not shallow, but I understand words mean things. You can’t just throw a bunch of words together that make no sense and expect people to not look at you with tilted heads and confused faces. Lol it’s like you start reading what he says and your like I get it... then he continues down that track and it’s like ... hmmm okay I’m not sure what your saying anymore because THE WORDS YOU ARE USING IN THESE PHRASES DOESNT REFLECT A MESSAGE. It’s just gibber jabber

  • Tlowe89

Po thing shaped like a yt man

  • FukkFolks2018

I kinda dont care. Its Friday

  • SunRiseBlossom

If people make something unnecessary out of this they must be unhappy. This man is simply praising his wife and giving her the honor and credit she is due for her endurance, unconditional love and stability.

  • Kim’s Original Face

    TGIF!!!! ??

  • Nik

A lot of women have been taught that it is okay to be with a man they have to build up. Thinking otherwise is considered having standards that are too high. No one is perfect, but it is unfortunate that people have made a doctrine out of fixing others. I see myself as my partner's equal and complement, not my son.

  • Black4life

    Really...I can't.

  • Ph.D

What a weak punk b-tch. It could NOT be me.

Some woman will interpret this as an excuse to hold on to a horrible man thinking she can "change" him. This just increases the single women in his congregation. He still had to come to the table with Something!!!

  • WutizstillHERE!

Say that again! The truth is many people seek love before know how to or before they have learned to love themselves. You absolutely correct that you are equals and not parents to each other.

    Uh......
......has this man ingested several bottles of Limited Edition Tiffany Haddish seasoning salt?

  • Strip Club Veteran

This mf annoying. Everyone want to be a philosopher on life and relationships. Same mfs will be in the news next week for some bs.

  • Soda

I don't have to understand it, I left that hypocrisy behind a long time ago. Why bother with "middle men" who seem like Sunday talent show performers when I can go directly to God without all the pomp and circumstance? A man who's still becoming a man shouldn't take a wife until he's grown enough to be her husband. Don't become a pastor if you can't practice what you preach.

  • Sircaput

Yes understandable but you can't help someone unless you have be through, people are healed and delivered through another persons testimony..So what he was talking about might not apply for some but I'm sure it helped someone. If it does not apply to you then we keep it moving but if it does then you take the bits and pieces and apply it to your life. One of the key word you said was "practice" no one gets it right all the time through "practice" but you "practice" to fix the mistakes that you have to make it right.

  • Lanegra??

Wow! I just scrolled back up and you are not exaggerating. His legs are super tiny compared to his upper body. His torso and his legs look like they belong to 2 different people

  • the guest

I was moved by what she wrote.

But I agree with you, and I imagine she’s an enabler of some things that should not be rationalized and enabled.

  • Guest

Lol. That is the first thing I noticed.

  • SingleGalCrazyWorld

I dont take stock in any man who goes to meet with Trump and then wants to play preacher on a talk show with a bunch of brainwashed women who have been so warped by the church that they dont even have a sense of self. For him to say that his wife had to go through pain in order to get his devotion is b.s.. I hate men that think they need to put you through hoops and fire then after you down, depleted, and miserable they finally wanna be in your corner. This is sickening...

  • pecancandy

    Thank you

  • Soon2BWife

The only thing that I see that is too big, is his upper body for those teeny tiny tiniest legs.

"Some woman will interpret this as an excuse to hold on to a horrible man thinking she can "change" him."
    ********************************************************
I see this quite a bit. Some remain for the kids and others remain because the devil they know is better than the one they don't. There's this belief that walking away from toxicity is giving up and therefore makes a person weak while hanging in there makes that person strong. NO. Every situation is not meant to be sorted. Sometimes walking away is self-preservation but people have been taught that saving themselves is a selfish act.

  • T Willis

He is saying that his wife rebirthed him. Rebirth means:
the process of being reincarnated or born again.
"the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth"
the action of reappearing or starting to flourish or increase after a decline; revival.
Rebirth, in this context, means that he was previously on a “decline” (i.e. probably excessive cheating; debauchary etc) and through her involvement, he was “reborn” a new person (i.e. release from his previous actions of debauchary) and now he’s living a “new” life, and it’s because of his wife. As his “rib” she provides nourishment, protection, and revitalization. That’s evident by the metaphor usage of “rib” and how the ribs serve the human anatomy’s vital organs.

  • Nik

I got what he was saying but I agree that he did not use the correct analogies throughout to convey his message. A lot of preacher's do that. It makes people excited and jump up and down because it sounds deep, but it has no practical application or substantive meaning.

  • Nik

I know a little of their backstory so I completely got what he was saying, but I can see how what he said got lost in translation.

  • MsVAllDay

You know what ya'll ain't ish today.

  • Nik

    WHAT??????????????????????

  • Tlowe89

Words mean this... i understand what he was trying to get at, but it was one good metaphor the they started to get all over the place... then he ended it she “ birthed (not rebirthed) me... ?.... words mean things..... I also got the context of what a “rib” means.

He was just doing to much......

She’s a covering, not a lid. Because if a man marries a lid, she’ll stop your dream.”

“She’s a coat: I still can’t fit her. She’s bigger than me. She’s had to cover me while I grow up.”

  • Brown & Proud

My mom adores that man, and I'm sorry but his skinny legs irk me! It doesnt help that he constantly wear super skinny jeans to accentuate the twigs. I dont trust anyone that affiliates with Joel Olsteen that man is a wolf in sheeps clothing. I canna.

John Gray appeared on both "Basketball Wives" & Family Hustle featuring the QUEEN of Ride to Die chicks Tameka "Tiny" Cottle. So that speaks for itself.

Adam was a completed man and it took being exiled out of the garden for Adam to realize that regardless of Eve's shortcoming God never told him to leave her.bone of my bone flesh of my flesh. It was and still is his responsibility to provide and protect. A women is to love and support and as the women in proverbs yes she does look well to the ways of her household. women can see things her husband may not notice because he is busy building providing and protecting but in no way is she supposed to step in and take over! A women CANNOT cover a man unless he is a little sissie emffeinate or whatever these mamas boys are today.Notice a white minister has nor would ever proclaim the craziness that John Gray is speaking. It is not Bibilical. Did john have a father in the home?

  • Eileen

He was looking for his daddy...trust and believe President Trump is not going to proclaim any of his wives birthing him!

  • Eileen

he is quite the interesting one...is he still tempting himself by dating that women for ever?

  • Eileen

    you crazy LOL

  • Eileen

thats because yo mama taught you better I know mines did. Amen for closed mouths and no books!

  • Eileen

only in the black churches because white men aint having it. I have been in white churches trust me there are somethings white men are not tolerating! when it comes to order ww know the drill and the rules and that is why they always get the prize of a well-lived life. Its that simple!

  • Eileen

I dont like beards earrings tattoos or skinny jeans. our men are like d-mn barbie dolls they in the mirror more than we are,,,,single-parenting black boys is the bane of our community and you see the results: jail birds and emffeminate pastors .God help us.

  • Eileen

You said it all honey and that is the modis operandi for black men. Umh I have another date with my white friend. No bill splitting, no booty snatching but he is already talking marriage within a month of meeting him and he is buying more than a few shares in GE smart move, homeowner, great dad a gentleman.......

  • Eileen

she needs to cover him by not letting him eat anymore ribs...thats right put his butt on a diet! My mother never allowed my father to get big and rotund.....

  • Eileen

but hold up the Bible said you cant remarry etc. etc. blah blah at the end of the day there are some issues you need to leave to God! Live your life and live it well! You can learn from other women. WW can be your heros they dont play! They know how it is supposed tobe that is why if the man aint doing his job they dont try to change him they book up outta there drop some more weight get a new haircut and a new man. bw will sit in the same church looking up at the same pastor for years!!! living the same old dead life for ever sometime you may have to move to a whole new state to live your best life ever, I did and its getting better and better!

Talking bout he didnt have sex until he was 30 .Wasnt nobody coming for his ugly behind. It aint like he had options. He was celibate by default no one wanted him. He needs 2 take his white skinny jeans pink shirt sponge bob shape behind somewhere n sit down. He is doing tooooo much.

  • Eileen

interesting...did he once ever say now I will cover her with my life...crickets

  • Eileen

My goodness best response ever...he doesnt have to say a word! The husband in Proverbs never said one word and the wife was working hard

  • Eileen

    Amen!

  • Eileen

    You mean...LOL

  • Nik

There's no consistency in the doctrine of remarriage in Christianity. Some teach the doctrine is perpetual while others teach the admonition was specific to the time and audience of that message. Either way, my comment addresses leaving a bad situation but not what comes after. That's above my pay grade. ???. But I hear you. We have got to do better living our best lives. I'm glad you are on your path to fulfillment!

  • Eileen

He should have said "rebirth" what is so freaking hard that?

  • Nik

I believe in being a supportive partner to my significant other, but not err on the side of being his mama. I think people tend to conflate the two.

  • Nik

    Heading to IG now.

  • whodatthere

    He look sweet to me...

  • Victorious82

What if it’s. It necessarily being his mama but having a nurturing spirit. Some men have very cold mothers and seek women that can be more nurturing to them. Just like some women seek men that can provide them with a sense of security their fathers didn’t.

  • Reina1718

I mean mama in the sense that she has to "raise" him; make him a man, teach him the ropes, handle all the business until he finally grows up. That I don't agree with because a man who is in that state is not an asset but a liability.

  • Reina1718

Praising her for staying after 8yrs of cheating...nah i’ll pass

  • Wreckognize Game

Did you get there and see all of that yet?

  • Neva RuthLess

This is why I say black relationships almost always fail, also black men’s interracial marriages end the most. Black men and black male patriarchy is inherently dysfunctional. White men just make better leaders their households are usually in order. Sorry not sorry.

  • TMW

I immediately thought of Humpty Dumpty sitting on the wall with his little skinny legs dangling.

  • Nik

Yes! Aventer should stop going back and forth because people are using it to dismiss her testimony. I agree with John and Derrick having a forum, but on neutral ground. I think John needs to clarify some things for people because the speculation is what is making this a runaway train.

  • ClaireHuxtable

I don't know anything about her, but remember meeting him many years ago. At the time he professed to being a "Virgin until marriage" which I thought was quite admirable for a man in those days.

  • Quitedeliteful

    Sniciker...

I know a few men and women who either are still virgins or married as virgins. I actually thought that was normal until I changed denominations.

  • SingleGalCrazyWorld

Thats the way it should be!! Not tearing down a woman to build a man up...a good man comes to the table with his own issues resolved or is working on a resolution... Good luck on your date!!!

  • TMW

I tried to watch this show, and I honestly don’t know who irritates me more. John or his wife.

With that said, I totally get what he’s saying. I really believe his comments are taken out of context to imply that his wife was being the provider and the protector. I actually believe he’s giving her credit for helping him grow up and become the man he is without limiting him or stifling his dreams.

When you’re in a relationship, if both of you aren’t growing and the relationship isn’t growing, it’s dying. People in a relationship should help one another become better versions of themselves, and should be able to acknowledge the contributions of their partner. A man definitely should be able to do that without being labeled as henpecked.

  • morenYAHdelsur

LMAO! Looking ? for that ‘male energy’ just like Kanye ???

Trump doesn’t respect women enough to even utter those words!

  • Quitedeliteful

Poor wife is a glutton for punishment. There is noo way I would have put up with his lying, cheating and other bullshyt for years. I bet the only reason he 'appreciates' her now is because he can't get it up anymore. I don't get why some men measure a woman's worth by how much bad treatment she can tolerate... There is no way Ima let a smelly-breath, fat man on stilts with man-boobs and a 'dead soldier' put me through heartache and aggravation.... smh...

  • January Jones

Never look for something externally to make you whole. You already have that within you and it is your responsibility to bring that to the forefront. A person who is external to yourself is only a means of support and not codependency.

It amazes me how the bible is used to condone staying with a man who commits adultery, when the bible, in Jesus's words says that is the only reason allowed for divorce. But anyway...Gray's wife reminds me of so many women who need a good reason not to look so stupid for the choice they made to stay with a man who mistreated them by being unfaithful. Unfaithfulness is bigger than he had a sexual relationship with someone. It includes, lying, stealing the joy from the household, unsettling the stableness of the relationship, breaking the vow to remain as one, sharing oneself with someone else physically, emotionally and mentally as well as financially. I can go on and on and on. And let's not go into bringing the possibility of bringing the cheated on spouse a disease or baby. ----
    ----
I've watched a girlfriend who married her high school sweetheart suffer through tears, depression and humiliation of her husband cheating by bringing home three kids, with two different women into their relationship/marriage. It took 20 years of going through all of this with him, and yes, she stayed as so many other women have, for the reason of God and forgiveness. She even used the excuse her husband had to grow and I had to love him through his weakness and uncovered pain. Amazing! Well....now, her husband is a religious man, preaching and teaching the word, exalting his wife's ability to remain with him through all of his "bad". They claim to have the best marriage ever, and love each other more than ever, so they use their story as a testimony to share. They even say the reason "they" went through so much is because they are vessels to share to others how to survive those issues. I put "they" in parentheses because how did he "suffer" for 20 years? He had the best of both worlds...the freedom to have all he wanted inside and outside the home.

Jesus on the main line. I can imagine how painful it is for her every time u make love 2 her.

  • A D N

Yes! The majority of men "come in from the streets because they are either too sick and need a nurse, the other women in the streets find him unattractive, or can't get it up anymore. It's a rare few who stop cheating when they realize what the consequences of their actions were.

  • facingrealit1

John never had sex until he met his wife. One of those OLD VIRGINS so his nose is definitely open.

  • A D N

Yes! Some men know when they are allowed to live their other lives and be married as well. They know their wives aren't going anywhere. I have an aunt who used to cheat on her husband all the time. She said she used to go to the club, meet men and have a great time dancing. She knew when she return home, she would get into a boxing match with her husband, but took the risk because the fun was worth it, and she knew he would not leave.

  • ClaireHuxtable

Oh My! I hope you weren't too disappointed.

  • Nik

No. I didn't convert until I was 20 so I had already walked around a block or two then practiced celibacy. My fear of pregnancy was greater than doing it for spiritual reasons so I can't judge.

  • ClaireHuxtable

You're such a sweet person...and well grounded too.

  • Nik

    Thank you so much!

THANK YOOOOOOOOOUUUU! "I don't need no man, I'm the mama and the daddy". Uh, bìtch, no you ARE NOT! You are BARELY the mother. The only women I give credit for claiming to have to do both are those whose children's fathers have passed (and not cause of no street bs) or the ones where the father just flat out refuse to do ANYTHING and have COMPLETELY WALKED AWAY.

  • gail jones

    Only the best Dah-ling.

All pastors aint shit because they are lying hiprocrits and dont preach the truth word which is every race came from a black woman , and how the black woman is the most hated and disrespected and the we are left under protected and that we are prisoners of war. And we was born to breed for this illusion . and quite frankly , I am jus sick of this Patriach System and everybody being ok with it . Let's talk about that 501 c3 that all the churches get where they dont pay Taxes and they can't preach the truth or they will lose the benefits , The Truth will set you free . Love and Light

  • Roxie Moxie

Well, I guess I'm going to hell then cuz I will divorce a man if I fell out of love and it ain't working no more. I want to be happy and I'm sorry, a book isn't going to keep me in an unhappy marriage just because he hasn't cheated. *shrugs*

And, I woulda left his a** asap. Forget that forgiveness crap. You bring home an outside baby, I'm getting allllll of your money via the court system.

A rich White man in Atlanta may get away with killing his wife after claiming he feared Black Lives Matter. According to reports by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Tex McIver killed his wife, Diane McIver, while they were returning to Atlanta after a weekend getaway.
