Regina King

Regina King was stunned when a foreign journalist admitted he didn't have a clue who she was. The Oscar favorite recalled the conversation she had with a Hollywood Foreign Press Association member that occurred before the Golden Globes awards ceremony.

The 48-year-old L.A. native said she was shocked that the journalist thought all Black actresses were the same.

The insensitive movie critic, whom the actress did not name, confessed that he didn't really know who she was after watching a private screening of her acclaimed new film If Beale Street Could Talk.

Regina, who has been acting for decades, won her first major movie role in the 1991 thug coming-of-age flick Boyz N the Hood.

"He said, 'So, the other members are telling me I should know who you are'," the actress tells Vanity Fair - and the conversation went downhill from there.

"I just let him keep talking, and he said, 'Yes, and you just were stunning in the movie, just fantastic in the movie. But you've been working for a while. You've done some Tyler Perry films?' I said, 'No, no, I've never done a Tyler Perry film'. And it's just that moment of, like, 'Man, you could just say that you thought I was great in the movie'. You want to be gracious, but then there's a part of you that wants to say, 'We're not all the same person!'"

Regina has good reason to feel disrespected. Through hard work and determination, she has earned the right to command top dollar and top billing in major films.

The star took home the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe at last month's star-studded ceremony and she's the red-hot favorite to pick up the same award at the Oscars on Sunday.

The actress is urging reporters to figure out a nicer way to address Black actors on the red carpet. She tells People magazine she has come to hate the question, "How does it feel to be here?"

"It's like, 'How am I going to answer this in a way that doesn't sound like I've been asked this question 952 times and I am excited about answering this question again?' It's really just a one word answer. 'It feels great!'"

Ummm....sorry. But his question doesn't necessairly mean that he thinks all black actresses are the same. Trust me, she wouldn't have ever been genuinely confused w Queen Winfrey. Further, cut the damn attitide. Each victory is a new level. People asking you how it feels could be (Could Be) them acknowledging you climbing higher and higher. Hell, 1 feet off the ground is a lot different than 100 and 1000. Just chill. These little tiffs could be awesome moments to leave a sweet aroma, not more shade. Ijs.

Ms. King is stunning. The epitome of a Star.

  • Bossy704

I don't think she would even audition for a Tyler Perry movie. Love him tho.

  • Phillybruh

I'm sorry but any entertainment reporter should know who she is. She's not new and she is award winning.

  • Renee26

Doesn't take away her success just magnified his ignorance. He wish he could be in her shoes versus reporting on her achievement

  • the guest

    Oh my god.

So you’ve done some Tyler Perry movies.

No, I’ve never done a Tyler Perry movie.

    That journalist should be terminated.

If he insulted Julia Roberts that way, he’d be terminated.

Regina King has been a working actress longer than Julia Roberts.

  • Phillybruh

Don't sleep on Tyler, even Angela humbled her self and signed up. He gave them work when no one else was calling.

This guy is a Hollywood journalist and doesn't know who this a list actress is????

Doesn't seem like he's very competent in his job.

  • the guest

Some respect on her legacy. This woman has been an established actor since she was a child. If she were white, Hollywood would be referring to her as an icon no different than Jody Foster who was established since a child. Black classic shows and movies, and actor longevity has the same validity as white.

  • iWasteTime

Nah, As a journalist you should know who you're interviewing.
This journalist made assumptions about her as an actor based on her race.

  • Zeta Aggie

He asked her if she did Tyler Perry movies so umm yeah that’s what he was insinuating. It’s his JOB to know. He sucks.

They ask her how it feels because they don’t know her history. Seriously?

  • the guest

I remember Ebert reviewing Poetic Justice back in the day and raving about Regina’s acting and saying she deserved a best supporting actress award for acting in that movie. I mean he deconstructed and praised that one scene with her and Chicago. Said she was a star to watch. And he was right.

  • Coy little wink

If you are on a red carpet sticking a mic in someone's face asking them for a sound bite you should at minimum know who you are speaking to

  • HelloToni

Regina played it cool. Tyler Perry movie art really insulting it was just insulting he didn't know who she was. I wish she would have named the journalist but again, she is too classy for that.

  • the guest

I hear you. I love Tyler Perry’s self made Black Hollywood. I do.

But it is wrong for anyone to presume Tyler Perry movies as the catch all of every black actor/actress’s experience.

The journalist was wrong to condescend that inference and mispresumption toward Regina King.

  • Phillybruh

    I agree with that wholeheartedly.

Regina King is probably the most sane, humble and down to earth celebrity. She is the complete opposite of a diva or drama queen.

Her and I used to work together, she looked out for me when I was younger by keeping me under her wing and on high paying jobs, so that I did not get sucked into the industry like most girls do.

I have nothing but respect for her.. she is super humble and real.

The journalist should not be interviewing someone she does not know. Or at least do her research before she ask for an interview. Journalism 101

On the one hand, you could say she is overly sensitive. However, I have been a fan of hers for a long time. She is pretty unassuming and down to earth, which I think contributes to her low profile relative to other actresses. Unlike that actress Jussie the Fraud Smollett, she gets a pass from me.

  • Jersey Girl

    Agreed!

  • tintin

that's true, i think they do pretend a lot.

  • dru and neil

So foreign press mistook her for someone else, well that’s actually understandable. She’s barely a household name in the states. We BLACK FOLKS love and adore her for decades now, white folks just found out about her a couple months ago. This came across as a spoiled American attitude abroad, IMO.

  • YellowSauce

This ANNOYS me .... a foreign journalist doesn't know who she is and she gets mad ???!!!! I had a girl from my childhood get mad because I didn't remember her ... now what would have happened if I were a celebrity and didn't remember her ...she would have gotten on social media and had an entire meltdown rant ( we did argue about it lolol ) .... meanwhile she is like 300 pounds now and 20 years older .... EVERY year there 20 new celebs and I never know who they are ... They should just be grateful the SOMEONE knows who they are because not everyone does ..... SMH ... I'm different because I like a person until I don't ... and right now I don't like her very much for this ..... I have to add also that just because he doesn't know her doesn't mean he thinks all black women look alike ... He just doesn't know you sweetie .. I bet he knows who Beyonce is lolololol ....

  • dru and neil

I don’t think that’s it, she’s just now hitting it big and he didn’t know her. He probably should have asked someone prior as a reporter, but she should chill too because she’s only been a household name in black homes for many years, until now.

  • NeverSurprised

"Regina has good reason to feel disrespected. "
    ------------

No she doesn't. It's the Hollywood FOREIGN Press Assn. She is well known here because her resume dates back to 227, but she is NOT well known in foreign markets.

You said yourself her breakout film role was Boyz in the Hood. It was a huge hit here in the US($56 mil). But do you know how much it made in foreign markets in TOTAL? $25,001.00 .Twenty five thousand!! Hollywood execs don't even get out of bed for $25k.

    https://m.the-numbers.com/movie/Boyz-n-the-Hood#tab=international

I used to sell tv and film programming in the foreign market and there has never been a big call for black films. Even Spike Lee's fims were historically difficult to sell in some foreign markets, for a variety of reasons.

My point is, it is understandable that members of the FOREIGN press are unfamiliar with her since she is just now becoming a major MOVIE star.

  • dru and neil

    Exactly.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Wow. $25K? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise in the foreign film market.

  • dru and neil

Julia Roberts has been pushing out blockbuster movies since 1990. She’s not a “working actress.” He wouldn’t have mistaken her because she’s internationally known. It’s not right but it’s the truth unfortunately. Yes, Regina is just as capable of being as popular as Julia but color has stood in the way. It’s sad as hell but true.

  • dru and neil

    Maybe in the states..

  • Marlee D

    STFU
If you had did your research before wanting to rush to and give a judgmental comment. You would know she is one of the most humble down to earth Actresses in Hollywood. The reporter was being facetious. He was trying to belittle her accomplishments by reducing her credits to a few Tyler Perry movies. This woman is a child actress that actually made it as an adult actress, without the drugs or drama that a lot of child actors experience. From the TV show 227 to Jerry Maguire Boyz in the Hood, Friday, Poetic Justice ,American Crime, to Seven Seconds,The Leftovers, Southland Miss Congeniality 1&2,Ray and the list goes on and on....... Regina has won 3 Emmy's and won nominated for an Oscar in the movie Ray. Regina is nominated now for if Beale Street could talk and she also directs. Regina is well respected in Hollywood.

And ever since her 227 days she’s has been working consistently. She’s just not up In your face all day, cause she has a whole regular life outside of being famous.

  • YellowSauce

  • 100milesperhour

He didn't feel he had to b/c she's black. W/o knowing anything about her, he reduced her accomplishments to doing Tyler Perry movies.

No I don’t know who that is. I never got in to it that deep to know who’s is who. I worked directly with her and she was the one who got me all my higher paying jobs.

  • Rhyme and Reason

If it peeves her, then it does!

She mentioned this for a reason, maybe, just maybe, more journalists here or abroad will take a minute, and Google celebrities they’re not familiar with!

I also, agree that she’s not as known by the Foreign press as Will Smith or Halle Berry!

Is she being over-sensitive, I can’t say because I’m not in her shoes, and it’s her battle to fight or bone to pick!

I was fresh out of college at the time.

  • YellowSauce

Me too .. Marry me ... HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • MsVAllDay

So are they basically being funny when asked if they were in a Tyler Perry movie??? Is he the laughing stock of the industry? Asking for myself.

  • MsVAllDay

But you are talking about an Emmy winner several times over and a golden globe winner and a person who is about to win an Oscar. The Tyler Perry comment was also belittling. It's like he was trying to be funny which is not necessary even if you don't know who she is. I mean she didn't just start acting a week ago. She's been in the game for a long time and has several high profile accomplishments at this point. As a journalist they should do their jobs and know actresses or if you don't be humble and figure out who they are before you belittle them. We tell these black actresses to be humble but say nothing when these white folks demand respect!

  • MsVAllDay

I totally understand where she was coming from.

  • MsVAllDay

Exactly! I can't even believe people are clowning her here. They don't take the time to learn who the black actors and actresses are b/c they feel we are beneath them. That's the point! I bet he did his due diligence on every clear that was present. This was disrespectful and she shouldn't have to take that. If you don't know who she is that's fine, but there's a better way to handle it. The fact that you try to diminish her accomplishments with the Tyler Perry comment was completely uncalled for.

  • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

    YOU TOO!

  • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

On a positive note.... She looks DAYUM GOOD for her age???

  • NeverSurprised

I'm just telling you how the industry works. She is not a big enough star to be known among foreign journalists, not yet. She has been primarily a SUPPORTING tv actress, not a headlining film star.

She JUST won a Golden Globe, and if she ever wants to win another one she should stop bad-mouthing a member of the FPA.

As for her Emmys, they don't care about that. Emmys are an AMERICAN Award. Every country has their own version. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards are the British version. You wouldn't know the names of most BAFTA winners the same way the Foreign Press reporter didn't know the name of a relatively minor tv star like King.

  • PlayerP

I was doing interviews on the red carpet at a major event in NY, during fashion week. There were some people whom I just learned their names and faces and others needed no introduction. Those names I didn't know where very gracious even though they were well known and respected in their field. Celebrities (celebrated and well known), in their field. I say it again, cuz these people had already had a notable level of success, and yet they still remained humble. There was one actress, whom at the time, was rising high - apparently. I did not know who she was at all. So I asked her name, I repeated it incorrectly, as I heard her incorrectly. It was noisey and it had happened a couple of other times in the night, no biggie. But as my friend say's, she tried to "big time" me. She corrected my error but then told me I should be more professional and know my press list. I kept it professional and didn't tell her, she was NO WHERE on it, ever. Even the last minute press list I just got minutes before we started filming - "oh you mean that one?", oh ummk. To this day, I have seen ONE thing she was in. ONE. Not to say that I don't dig her, even after her display of headassyness, she's not on my radar. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on who you are and how you look at it, I don't watch her work, completely unintentionally.
Now, speaking OT, I too cringed when I read the TP comment. And I agree, whom ever this critic is could have and should have had more decorum. Do I feel his question had some racist undertones to it, yes, however, this just feels like go ol fashioned ignorance. And true, racism is borne from ignorance, this doesn't seem deliberate or malicious.
Not everyone is going to know who you are no matter how well known you feel you might be.
He was right about one thing - RK is stunning!

  • T Willis

I mean, Regina King isn’t really A-list, not even by black celebrity standards. I can understand why the foreign press doesn’t know who she is. In fact, I think it was Will Smith that said that he worked harder to make sure that his films were promoted overseas, because black cinema isn’t really marketed or promoted overseas. Regina King - for all her time spent in Hollywood - should be more aware of that than anyone else.

I understand the slight (given her time and body of work in Hollywood), but, she has to remember that she’s a black American actress. They just aren’t as familiar with her like we are in the U.S. ?????

  • T Willis

And repugnant lack intelligence and basic common sense????? Tis the world we live in

  • T Willis

She’s a black American actress that’s held predominantly supporting cast roles ?????. I can’t even think of more than 1-2 roles where she received top billing. Now if this were Halle Berry, Will Smith, Denzel Washington - then I can understand the slight, but... I’m thinking she needs to be a bit mindful of the barriers that most black films receive when they’re presented overseas. It’s not really marketed unless it has a black crossover actor - which Regina is not

  • T Willis

    Exactly!
Btw, I did not know that tidbit about Boyz in the Hood. Crazy.

  • T Willis

Regina’s roles have mostly been supporting cast. Why would the FOREIGN press take time to investigate an actress who has never received top billing on a film? An actress - despite her credits - that has never really crossed over in America’s mainstream market. You have to put this in perspective and understand that oversea markets don’t cater to black cinema pictures unless the actor has already crossed over in American mainstream markets. Regina should just take it all in stride. Her time is coming, but the attitude, she needs to lose it before some of these doors slam close before they’ve even opened (for her)

  • Sowell62

The journalist is the Idiot.. Regina King is awesome!!!!

  • Willette Capers

The Hollywood Foreign Press is an American based organization. Foreign is in the name because in the 40s they would share info with other organizations during the war. They only thing the organization does is sponsor the Golden Globes. The reporter was American and probably being shady.

Ditto! Her authenticity comes through in her roles, which I can appreciate...

  • Notatall

Idk- maybe we had to be there to really understand where she is coming from because reading it on paper doesn't sound like a big deal.

  • Tiff J

But if you are a reporter, you should KNOW who you are speaking to. There should be SOMEONE there to whisper in your ear.... or even the celeb's publicist, to announce who the celeb is. If you do NOT know who she is, are not familiar with her work , then stick to "general" questions. don't assume that just because she's black, she's been in a Tyler Perry or Spike Lee film. :hardeyeroll:
