Gabrielle Union called out hairstylists working in Hollywood who have no idea how to style black hair. The 46-year-old actress has had her share of bad hair days on the red carpet.

Gabrielle reacted to model Olivia Anakwe's statement against "texture discrimination" in an Instagram post, after a fashion brand failed to hire a backstage hairstylist with knowledge of styling textured hair despite booking her to wear cornrows during a Paris Fashion Week show.

A chorus of African-American actors, including Gabrielle, Insecure actress and writer Natasha Rothwell and Community star Yvette Nicole Brown, also shared their frustrations with the lack of Black hairstylists in Hollywood.

"The pressure to just be happy they picked you & you got a job, don't ask for the SAME things every other actor/model gets on GP," wrote Gabrielle. "Listen, if u stay quiet, u WILL have bald spots, hair damage, look NUTS (tho they will tell u its cuuuuuuuuute)," the Bring It On star tweeted.

She also drew attention to the difficulties that Black hair stylists face getting into the industry, because of difficulty getting into restrictive unions.

"What alot [sic] of non-industry folks don't realize is that u can't just use [your] normal hairstylists/barbers/makeup artists on a union job (most jobs are union) Those artists HAVE to be IN THE UNION & getting them in has NEVER been easy or smooth. Ever. Like never," she shared.

"PSA: If you cast a POC (person of color) - And thank you for doing so! - you also have to hire someone who knows how to do ethnic hair," tweeted Natasha Rothwell. "Not someone who's "comfortable with it" but someone who actually knows how to style ethnic hair types. Congratulations on advancing to the next level of inclusion!"

And actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen, who played Black Manta in Aquaman, sympathized with Olivia after she shared she was "ignored" and "forgotten" by Caucasian hairstylists backstage, explaining the issue affects many Black actors in Hollywood as well.

"100% of Black Actor/Actress I've spoken to on this topic face the same thing in film and television," he said. "Hair Stylists in our industry should have proper training, AND be able to show proof. Too often they begin to 'figure it out' the second we sit in the chair."

With all the things going on in Hollywood, hair is not the priority. Gabby, get your own hair stylist and bring them with you on set. Problem solved. Now back to bringing down sodom and gomorrah, aka, Hollywood.

I wouldn't let someone who doesn't have the qualifications do my hair, that is what a wig is for, since they have to be union members on union jobs, bring you some wigs.

  • TRUTHbeabsolute

This is the reason why they wear wigs because massa doesn't want to look at yo nappy head. Then it becomes a trend and all negro women start wearing this sh_t and they're laughing at us because we are so stupid that we make up excuses for not wearing our own hair. #ONCEWASLOST.

They are not allowed. If you read the whole write up you'd remember that if the stylist of choice isn't in the union, they can't come on the set and style their client...

  • Carrington

There really is no excuse for this because all the actresses who are complaining have to do is recommend someone into the union and they can be used.

  • Carrington

    How old are these folk?

  • Dowoop

And nobody buys that there isn't a few black stylists in the union. She should have said she didn't want to pay her own stylist so she was stuck looking like a mess because the white lady on set didn't know how to do her hair and face

  • Kay Gee

They have to have it done before they get to the set, unlike their non Black co stars, who have their type of stylist on set.

I just commented about the union and, I've seen several people get recommended into the union. Maybe they got in because they were recommended by A-list. But these women have enough power, when banded together, to get the union to let some people who know how to style them in.

Anything that involves making serious dough and predominantly white will always be difficult to get into. In other words they keep us out. You can see the arrogance in that profession too. The serious money makers are the gay white men, so that in and of itself answers your question if you know anything about gay white men. "Sweet as pie" but deep down he's still a white man FIRST.

  • B.Loveitt

Some people are just sad MF's.

  • B.Loveitt

    Not that easy...

  • TRUTHbeabsolute

So you trying to say they mistook union for Union? I ? you.

  • Carrington

If the actress has enough clout, it can be. I know someone who got in just on the recommendation of Queen Latifah.

  • Kay Gee

I believe her/them, she isn't the only Black person speaking on this, sandra used her name because she knew people would make it a negative about Gabby.

  • NeverSurprised

She's annoying. I don't care what point she is making and whether it has merit. She has raised "annoyance" to an art form, so I can't listen to anything she has to say.

And I don't buy it because there are plenty of black women who have never looked messed up

And if you're gonna whine about your hair.. buy a wig or hire your own hair dresser instead of dissing other workers who probably had a tough time with your hair.

  • Wile E. Coli

OK.. I've seen a lot of totally stupid gifs here but that one.. cool.

  • Myopinion

Girl she's just making a statement that's true, how do you know she had no complaints? Why does she need to sit down? Some one needs to stand up for the very remedial issues black people face or we will continue to be ignored in a lot of areas. This is considered small to you, but not to people in the industry who has to deal with this. You can go to your cousin Kim at the shop to get your hair done, but they have to have stylists who are in the union and not many are black.

  • Sushi

I would have my hair styled, before I go in, depending on the style I am supposed to wear, one issue solved. The other issue of not having many AA, in Tinseltown to style AA hair, is a whole entire situation, that should be addressed.

  • Dowoop

Exactly... So there is no real issue. If you work where you are not catered to then you get a job where you are catered to or you prepare for yourself before you go.

I understand that but in order to get what you need in this world asking permission doesn't do it ... you have to start to DEMAND to get the things you need to do your best job and this is why its so hard because instead of insisting on having what they need they beg for it ... no one gives beggers anything they give things to people who take what they need ... so it being hard should not stop them ... it didn't stop them from being actors .... Ms. Union can't just do it. Fortunately my boyfriend got in a year ago and it's not easy. And don't think that Gabrielle hasn't tried to use her influence b/c you don't see what goes on in the background. How many times have we watched a talk show, and a white woman is styling a black woman's hair live on TV, and we are all at home watching like.....She does not know what the fu*k she's doing!)? Okay that's what Gabby is saying and she has EVERY RIGHT! But its funny when they show her bob up close on TV that Becky messed up but she can't complain? FOH!

  • WutizstillHERE!

When you are in a production of any kind you are at the mercy of whatever the production budgeted as the stylist. Like she said sis its all union and you cannot bring anyone on set and say do my hair...not for any major production.

  • KcoolMuziq

Did U read what Gabby said? U can't just bring ANYBODY on set to do your hair unless their union. It's NOT easy getting to be union. That can cause major complications.

It was a MAJOR problem for Victoria Rowel that use to play Dru on Young & The Restless She had to get her hair done in the hood away from the show. She REFUSED to let them white hairstylist do her hair. Kristoff St Johns(r.i.p.) hair looked BUSTED on YnR. I guess he didn't care.

It's hard in a time frame. But it just goes with being African American. Even though some hairstyles have to fit a role. Now that can be a MAJOR problem.

'they' got their foot in the door first, so, like any other secure gig that later opened up for us too, 'they' still want to maintain the status quo of bringing in folks who look like them.
same reason Ruth Carter just (and finally) won an oscar for costume design, but Edith Head won several during her career. same reason "flesh colored" band-aids don't match MY epidermis, LOL!

  • the guest

Do what Cardi does. Hire family and friends who know black hair. By the way, Dominican salons are the best salons for black hair. They're old fashioned, will still hot comb, they're not afraid of nappy and kinky, they don't over relax, they don't believe in relaxing too often, and they still do roller sets sit under the dryer for a natural way of having straight/curl style (like black women used to do in the old days).

This definitely explains a lot because when Viola Davis first appeared on HTGAWM, I couldnt understand why her wig was always falling off and her makeup looked cruddy. Clearly they recently put a sister on payroll because she’s been slaying this past season! The only hairstylist these companies need in their union is Kim Kimble because the woman is VERY talented! Also the young lady that does Tika Sumpter’s hair. He hair is always laid.

I know a few black celebrities that have their own personal hair stylist. Matter of fact a lot of white celebrities hire very expensive companies from LA to fly out to do their hair on tv and movie sets.... an associate of mine work for such a company and he is paid anywhere from 15k to 30k to fly out and do celebrity hair all
Over the world. Gabrielle stop being cheap and hire your team.

  • http://citygirlzen.blogspot.com/ missarewa

I don't see anything wrong with her hair in the cover picture. That's what relaxed hair looks like and it is combed and groomed. Edge control and baby hair is not mandatory. Too much time laying edges but careers and bank accounts are not laid, education not laid, no legacy, nothing but edges.

  • Zeta Aggie

So true. Because we naturally come in all shades and textures.

Random I was getting highlights at a upscale place in Dallas- white girl asked if I had a relaxer. I said no. She kept touching my hair then said well if you have used chemicals then the color could do damage. I said yeah I know and I’m good. Bish asked me AGAIN. And I said no I don’t have a relaxer. She was about to say something else and I twisted around to look at her and loudly said “some of us do have naturally straight hair you know.”

She turned red and stfu smdh. Ugh the struggle is real.

  • INDUSTRY GURU

Yes, Bella you are correct. There are work arounds, I know people who have trailers off set as a work around to Union issues. It can get tricky though dancing around union policies this is considered cheating the Union. It can get you a bad name in an industry where black listing and the reputation of your" name" carries alot real consequences. Union rules with a iron fist and a set and production can quickley be shut down over union issues.

Some off the issues here though are, wardrobe changings, script calling for a new look happens alot, also there are often very long hours, hair styles get messed up, - so their is a constant need to have people available right there on set a moments notice.

If you remember the recent "#Oscars so white " campaign Jada speaking out and the black actors protesting. Old 'Tinsel Town' is still in this current area very discriminatory. Black actors have not banded together for real solutions because once youve made it in the circle of Hollywood as a "working" actor thats what becomes important to keep getting work. People are afriad to ruffle feathers. You see Tyler created his own Hollywood in Atlanta, built his own Studio complex and made them - Come to him.

  • C Mack

Lol. You failed the reading test

Cardi hires them for appearances and shxt. We’re talking about film and tv. Doesn’t work the same

  • C Mack

    You in the Union??

  • B.Loveitt

There are many that will tell you the same from YouTube, IG etc. Some that are even union will tell you isn't much help either. This college admission scandel is a prime example...they take care of their own but phuck you if you're trying to take care of your own due to another hue. Just because master is enamoured with you and your talents, lets you sit at his table doesn't mean he's down for all of us. Again "it ain't that easy."

Sure you can. The actor/ actress just have to make the request. It is not exclusive like the labor unions ie: Teamsters...

  • classycns

This is when Black A-list entertainers(men and women) can use their wealth and influence to get Black stylists and makeup artists union jobs on the set. I remember when Kenya Moore was on Celebrity Apprentice. The hairstylists complained that she was difficult because she used her own hair stylist. Insert side-eye. Even the haters know that is her real hair. So why was the stylists so annoyed with her using her own stylist since they don't have any experience with textured hair. I think they wanted to damage her real hair.

  • Rhyme and Reason

They have such a stereotypical view of us about various aspect of everyday things!

I bet she looked stupid, when she blow dryed or cut your hair!

  • classycns

Agreed but A-list celebrities should use their influence to get as many Black stylists has they can in the union even if they have to donate the money to do it like with other races and cultures. There are plenty Black A-listers in the last couple of decades to have gotten enough Black stylists in the union. Trust and believe TP got plenty of Black stylists in the union.

  • classycns

Tika should work to get her stylist in the union but does the stylist want to be in the union.

  • the guest

Everybody's own hair was thick and lovely back then too.

  • bella28498 .

    U are right!

  • interestingconcept1

You have to get hired to get the credit-which is on lock down by white head of the department and or pay a substantial fee. Most black actresses have to sneak their hair stylist onto the lot/set but if they are caught-the union always send reps to snoop around and you can’t deny them access, the Line Producer can get in a lot of trouble-fired and the union will sue the production company.

  • interestingconcept1

Chile you can see her natural hair in that weave, a white person did that.

  • Faux Gibbler

Double edged sword. If you don’t have unions then you get taken advantage of by the Tyler Perry’s in the biz.

  • Li-Wright

You still bring YOUR own hairstylist and have them instruct the Union-paid hairstylist how to do the hair; or have them assist.

  • Sharonda Rowell

Currently working on set credits to get in..I worked on set last summer for a Christmas movie, and I've done a few other projects locally so that I can join..When its not summer, I teach cosmetology in a high school every August-May...do you have any helpful suggestions?

  • C Mack

You’re doing it! I’m working on getting in myself by doing stuff around ATL, too! I’m also an educator? Are you as ready for spring break as me? Lol

  • Melanated Goddess??

What Dominican salons are you going to? I would never encourage a black woman to go to a Dominican hair salon. They use way to much heat to burn the kinks out of your hair. Blow outs can and are extreamly damaging to kinky hair. You can see the smoke from the hair dryer as their blowing out. After a while your hair will start to shead like a cheap rug. They also have a tendency to cut way to much off during a trim especially if your hair has some length to it. They also talk shit about people in spanish.

  • Melanated Goddess??

Asians are the biggest bootleggers. They copy , steal and imitate people. Them wearing fro's and cornrows is just another way for them to take more money out of black peoples hands. I'd never allow a racist imitator to touch my head.

  • Sassie

    Damn. It's THAT serious? Wow.

  • Sassie

Gabby made it clear that most jobs are union jobs and it's hard to get REAL stylists on the set. She has money. I think she might know what she's talking about since she's in the business.

  • Sassie

    Good point.

  • Sassie

I'd just get my hair done BEFORE I arrived on set and just had them do my makeup.....and would pitch a fit if they wanted me to change my hair. I'd try that just to see if I could get away with it.

  • bella28498 .

If they are in the union many Black MUA's and other stylist will tell you they are the last pick. The older Hens don't like the younger ones. You've seen many get recommendations but the Black stylists who are "Unionized" still aren't working like they should be! It comes from their mouths and I know it to be true even if they never spoke a word.
