Brenda Renteria thought she would be safe from her abusive ex-boyfriend if she exchanged custody of their son at a police station in California. Police say Jacob Munn, 30, killed the 27-year-old in front of her shocked relatives on Sunday.

Renteria and relatives went to the Hawthorne police headquarters to meet Munn to pick up their 17-month-old son.

Munn, who has a violent history, took the baby inside the station. When Renteria arrived at the police station, the two began to argue. Munn went to his black Chevy pickup truck, retrieved a shotgun and shot Renteria in front of the police station. The baby was still inside the police station and was not injured.

The Los Angeles Daily News reports one of the officers inside the police station heard the gunshot and rushed outside.

Munn then fled the area in his vehicle which was later found abandoned in a Denny’s parking lot half a mile south of the police station. Munn was caught three hours later not far from where the truck was found.

KCAL reports Renteria was so afraid of Munn, that she had asked her family to come with her to pick up her son at the police station, where she felt safe making the exchange.

According to the Dailymail.com, Munn has a history of violence that includes a battery charge on a former girlfriend.
