Some Black women are furious with mixed race singer Beyonce Knowles-Carter for implying that her song "Brown Skin Girls" is needed to convince Black women we're beautiful.

Black women everywhere are posting testimonials under the social media hashtag #BrownSkinGirl, named after Beyonce's song.

But the song launched a debate about placing value on skin color. In response to the furor, Beyonce uploaded a video to her Instagram page that shows dark skinned women and girls singing along to the lyrics of "Brown Skin Girl".

According to Madamenoire.com, Beyonce "went out of her way" to celebrate "marginalized women". So now dark skinned women are marginalized?

Question: Do Black women really need Beyonce to tell us we're beautiful?

Beyoncé is mixed? I thought both of her parents were black.

And who is mad now? Let me guess, anyone who doesn’t have brown skin ?

Black women and girls do need to be gassed up and told their beautiful because for sooooo Longgg we were conditioned to think that European standards of beauty were the only acceptable form of beauty.

  • Dowoop

    Another useless outrage post.... ??

  • Let them eat cake

    The bald girl is gorgeous.

If beyonce is mixed race than so are 90% of black americans. Bey just made a song, and people simply responded. everyone knows they can't count on kelly rowland for support. beyonce is a superstar, no matter what she does its going to get attention. and this is coming from someone that isn't even really a fan.

I know one thing.. if beyonce grows up and does that to face (what her mom tina has done) I’m going to find her and whoop her ass

  • ShelbyMoore

Because Black Men, especially, along with everyone else, make it a point to tell dark skin women that they are NOT beautiful.

  • ShelbyMoore

I think I only like 2 of her songs and the only one I can remember is Irreplaceable, which means that it must be the only song that I liked.

  • Bushbabe

I have been over Beyonce and her insecure behind. Every since the time when she would not bow out graciously and sang at last when she know she sounds like a yodeling goat. Eff her and her unstable emotional stans. She seems to have a God complex.

  • Kimberly King

It definitely shouldn't take Beyonce or a song for you to make you feel good about your skin tone. Dark skin women have some of the most smooth and beautiful skin I've ever seen. They're actually my preference when it comes to my random relations with women. I haven't listened to the song or the soundtrack. Bey is an OG when it comes to pandering the black community. Every time she does something, people go crazy. Next

  • ShWa

Yesit is so much negativity amongst black people....

? Nah! What happened to ??Black is Beautiful ? Black Girls Rock?Black Girl Magic ?????

  • Anunnaki, in A twilight Zone

Have you not seen the hate against dark skin, i think she did a great jesture, cause people will follow her and maybe the low self esteem women will start to love their skin. Especially the ines that bleach, all over in africa bleaching. So I say kudos

  • Nicol B

I grew up wanting to be brown. That had more to do with my mother who is beautiful and brown. Also, I grew up with my standard of beauty being black women. So, I feel blessed not to have a "colonized" attitude of what is beautiful among my own people.

  • Anunnaki, in A twilight Zone

    Right

  • SemajBeyPhilly

She’s trying to uplift the women that Chris Brown is putting down but since it’s “Beyonce” ppl (Sandra) is against it. I ain’t hear one negative comment until I came here. Smfh y’all love trying to bring this lady down

  • SemajBeyPhilly

  • Floriduhh Evans

Little black girls might need to hear this, not everyone is blessed with parents or family/friends to tell them that they are beautiful and worthy. If you pay attention to most popular music/movies/tv and social media, it tends to uplift the mixed phenotype and plastic surgery bodies.

  • http://www.instagram.com/yeuphonic @yeuphonic

Sandra knows this cause she was brave and vocal about LSLH dominating all things black media and other which marginalized DS and BS girls.

  • Joy King

When were brown skin women not beautiful. And please don’t blame this foolishness on European standards because everyone they choose, going as far back as the first black supermodel to represent black beauty, is either brown to dark skin women. I’ll just name a few below for the folks who keep this topic going.

Donyale Luna first black supermodel, Beverly Johnson, Naomi Sims, Iman, Grace Jones, Pam Grier, Diahann Carroll, Whitney Houston, Gail O’Neil, Roshumba, Beverly Peele, Naomi Campbell, Kiara Kubukuru, Alek Wek, Liya Kebede, Jessica White, Lyndsey Scott, Lupita Nyong.

Just finding out about this song today, Well..... Considering how so many people are lightening and bleaching their skin, I can't be mad at beyonce! Look at how Chris, 50cent etc offends brown skinned women, I ain't mad at Beyonce making a song about how beautiful I am. Ppl get pissed if she's silent on a matter about black people then they got pissed when she showed support for Trayvon Martin and his Mom. She puts out a song about brown skinned women and people are up in arms!! Who are these lifeless people?

  • Bree

I don't think a song was necessarily what dark skinned women needed. All women, dark skinned, light skinned are beautiful. I think the song is okay. But I'm more of a fan of TLC's Unpretty. It came from a pure place. Hopefully this song did too. If we're going to make a statement, make sure it is meaningful and not just for publicity

  • Faithz

    Ain't that the truth....

  • Rent em Spoons ?????????

Lol didn’t see it but heard it wasn’t what it is , Blade John farve, she just got the check.

  • starbright9449

And the thing is Bey showing off other women and girls in the video. She's not showing off herself in a bunch of designer costumes. Even tho she's not dark skinned she didn't make the video all about herself. We know she could have. I don't get why people are angry.

  • Rent em Spoons ?????????

Exactly , just proof you can’t please anyone , that’s why I wasn’t mad at CB , beauty/ nice looking is subjective and he gave no description of what he considered nice.

If anything I’m more mad that CB blatantly trouts around with a curly brown skinned girl in his Drake video to appease to fake woke socialites. One brown girl amongst 800 light skinned video girls smh.

  • ReadingIsFundamental4Real

It's a good positive song. Heaven forbid people of any shade allow it to empower their beautiful minds.
Bet can't do right for those who see her as wrong.
    Fake News.

  • WhoKnew

Folks at the front of the cherch that pushed the first lady off her pew and her wig flew across the sanctuary just so they could sit up front ain't trynna to hear this but BeYonkers uses the "brown and dark-skinned girl" card whenever she is working on a project and the folks in the back of the cherch aren't singing her praises and shouting kudos to the queen. Seriously, she does this "brown girls matters" about every 2 years.

  • Li-Wright

IMO all this "love yourself" shy%T is over-hyped. It seems everybody is on board with the Hot girl summer, Love yourself mantra. Geez! Can we change the channel?

  • Li-Wright

I think this "love yourself" stuff has gone toooo far. I'm starting to think it's a big stunt to get MORE attention.

  • starbright9449

It shouldn't take Beyonce to make a girl feel good about her skin but trust me, for some low self esteem women and impressionable young girls, it does!! Especially when they look around all they're seeing is biracial and light skinned women getting all the attention.

  • Rent em Spoons ?????????

Agree with you on everything but the CB part. When did CB directly diss brown women ? Because to my understanding people of all complexions have both good or bad hair.

  • Let them eat cake

Nothing will ever touch the original.

  • WhoKnew

    Blewp. Facts.

  • ReadingIsFundamental4Real

Right. All this means is she would have been a breeding, cooking, cleaning house nigga during slavery being raped, separated from her children, and abolished from her culture. A nigga none the less. But people will argue that was better than the fields.
    We are our worst enemy!

  • starbright9449

Considering how Chris Brown, 50 cent and other rappers and singers have been trashing dark skinned women, how can anyone say its gone to far when teenage girls and young women who could be facing insecurity issues say its gone to far? Some people need a reminder almost everyday. As long as its not harming anyone, motivation can never go to far!!

  • Satui Lerne

This statement right here! One of the reasons I'm such a fan of hers is she gives opportunities to black musicians, dancers, and professionals. . and that was WAY before Beychella

Even if it is in conflict with her not making a statement in 2008. Like folks aint got a memory or Google.

  • Torae

Neither me nor my children need Beyoncé to tell us our brown skin is beautiful. She should tell herself and Kelly that being as though they chopped their AFRICAN noses off for a more European standard? Beyoncé made this song to make sure she takes all you insecure women coins...

  • KcoolMuziq
  • 100milesperhour

Black men being brutalized & killed by police, but have time to degrade black woman's complexion & hair texture. They're the last ones to stand up for their own women. Let me clarify, lowlife rappers who have lots of $ but no power have a platform to advertise their hate. Who cares what they think? This country is run by racist white men that don't differentiate based on skin tone. All blacks are "less than" to them.
Look around, as a whole black men marry black women. The ones that uplift other races are highlighted in the media to push an agenda.

  • Wayup!

This is just my opinion but BSG is THE most underwhelmin song off of the album.....
I mean it just wasn't outstanding in lyrical content or beat wise.....so why all the dark skin and brown skin girls going crazy over this saying now they feel validated in their skin I don't know.....
the only conclusion I can come to is that the women who feel so highly validated are and were weak-ass individuals to begin with....?

  • Dun Dilly

Some folks need serious mental therapy.

  • Skin Deep Beauty

Pretty much..shyt I remember the saying "the darker the Berry the sweater the juice" was empowering! Beyonce did nothing for me... Her ENTIRE LIFE IS A FACADE! AND UNTIL SHE GO AND GET HER G.E.D. she can just GTFOH!

  • Meme

Not gonna lie a part of me cringed slightly when I heard the song it felt a little patronising, HOWEVER, it is a nice song, (just nice not spectacular) and we must remember that not everyone comes from a home where they are Praised and uplifted and Told the truth of their beauty, so if this song can counterbalance the negative lies some fools put out there about melanated beauties then more power to her and the people who have an extra spring in their step when the hear it!

  • Skin Deep Beauty

    That last part ESPECIALLY

  • GrandHustleGirl1

Girlllllll.......if she would have picked up on the darker the berry the sweeter the juice saying and turn that into a song....

Not only would have been hot it would have been ?

but something tells me her team already thought of that and she shot it down because she's light-skinned....

So they went back to the drawing board and came up with this preschool childish play school sesame Street song....
This is not a song for a full grown adult...
This is a little ditty for infants to 5 years old....??

  • EMILY POST

Is that the measure? A BET show. WOW That they had to go out and make after they were criticized for their poor imagery of women and Ratchetness..

  • Desi

  • GrandHustleGirl1

Like she played out that cheating mess, first she uttered it in a few songs, then she made a full fledged album about it. This after she told yall to leave yall cheating men...lol. what a joke. Let me guess, later on when black beauty ain't as popular she gonna sing about her golden skin again
    Bye yonce!

  • Wayup!

Yeah you're right it is a cute little song for sesame Street

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

    Because many worship her
I dont take advice from weak bishes like her but she didnt lie brown dark light medium skinned women are beautiful.

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

    Lol
    Never that
Thats too much blackness for her
Though she might now, she seems to be trying to stay relevant by acting woke

  • GrandHustleGirl1

And that pre- Hollywood nose and skin wouldve had her in the field so ...yeah. lol

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

They did all that and kelly still looks like her father matthew knowles.

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

Shes not a joke because shes not even funny, just pathetic and weak and a horrible example to follow.

  • Junkanoo

It's sadly a message that still needs to be heard by many. My one issue is has Beyonce bleached her skin. People are free to engage in plastic surgery but telling black females they are beautiful as they are while having had plastic surgery doesn't look good. I do wish blonde wigs on black women completely went out of style.

  • EMILY POST

    I haven't heard the song.
It would be interesting to see her real take on her experience as being a black woman. I remember the moment in time when Rhianna star started to rise and everyone like how authentic she was and they first compared her to Beyonce . Beyonce who's Bestfriend was Gwenyth Paltrow and she was marketed as everything but black on the Loreal Box and she was doubling as a Shakira twin..... That was interesting. Now is the super Wokeyonce journey..
Her father gave a real account of his experience as a black man and his relationships with black women. He had a pretty good take.

  • Meme

Reminds me of the time (in my much younger days lol) when buju made a song about browning, now initially I thought it applied to all black women till the yardies said nope it about light skin gyals ? so anyhow there was outrage from certain contingent of dark skin girls so he brought out a song for the dark skin girls ( mi nah stop cry for all dark woman respect all the girl dem with dark complexion). Lawd that seemed like a pity song, so to this day if I hear the tune he made for the dark skin girls I cringe just seems soooo patronising lol

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

I recently had to go check lupitas room when she was in LA to make sure that she had all she needed, usually assistants handle that but LN is a new HUGE client so we werent taking chances, tell me why as i walked out i ran into her and was rendered speechless? Her eyes are dark the the scleras are super white so that grabs your attention but her lips cheekbones and nose are equLly a work of art. She had no makeup on and looked fawking gorgeous and then she haf the nerves to tell me i look beautiful as if i could ever compare to her majestic @$$ ?

  • Maxx

It is a nice song. Everyone speaking on it is just making it more controversial which will make it sell more sooooo...if you don't like it don't talk about it & don't buy it, then it will go away. I definitely don't need Beyoncé to tell me I'm beautiful, but why not take that positive message from anyone? We need more positive messages even from the 'machine' & the 'fakeness' that is Beyoncé, the message is still positive.

  • INDUSTRY GURU

Beyonce has marketed herself as an EXOTIC non black for decades. Branding her self with words like words like Creole and French and American Indian. She has been traveling the Globe circling it for decades and avoiding AFRICA for decades. THIS YEAR marked her FIRST EVER performance in Africa.

Most people have forgotten when she stated in an interveiw "she is jealous she wasnt born Latina"

Both Jay Z and Beyonce have aged out, meaning they are no longer capable of tweeking and hiding their age which is the industry norm. In this business once you get the "OLD" title your value PLUMENTS.

Her 2016 Super Bowl performance using Black Panther back up dancers and her Music video showing her perched on a submerging police car with the words "stop killing us" super imposed marked the begging of a intentional marketing campaign - a revamping of her image to cater to BLACK ISSUES to make up for loss market value (profit decline) due to aging. Jay in unision dropped 444 his Social Conscious Album.

Both Jay and Beyonce have realized that being socially consciounce NOW at this cross road in their career is PROFITABLE. Hence the public image you now see. Contrary...... to the image Harry Belonfante once very publically critized .

  • burp p

Funny how so many of our ppl praise Beyonce for writing a song about black skin...meanwhile Madonna gets called "old" "irrelevant" and gets NO support from our community and she is LITERALLY building schools, hospitals, and orphanages in a poor black country as well as adopted 4 african children and pretty much saved their lives....madonna has LITERALLY poured more money into helping our ppl than most black celebs combined and was hiring black dancers, singers and production crew BEFORE beyonce became a thing...but are we supporting her?????????

  • No Love Lost

LITTLE GIRLS who don't have anyone to look up to that have self esteem issues about their skin, can take great solace from Beyonce's song. And fyi, before anyone mentions Indie Arie. These little girls don't know a thing about her, but they definitely know who Beyonce is. That being said, this song has a BEAUTIFUL message, so I don't get why people (jealous blacks who hate Beyonce) are finding a problem with it. Like how can you find a problem with such an inspiring song about loving your dark skin. I'm telling you, some of you blacks are SAD as fk.

The worst thing about your comment is not the comment itself but it's the fact that you actually think you said something... Lol So the muck, the dirt and the swamps you speak of in your comment is the levees that broke in the swamps that killed black people (which she gave money to help.) It's the police brutality and killings against black people. It's all the injustices that black people face and not kneeling to an anthem that degrades black ppl all to which Beyonce has spoke against in her music/performances. THAT'S HER PLATFORM!!!! Every freedom fighter won't take the same approach as Harriet but can still be just as effective as her. And for the record, the ancestors did sing songs of freedom to freedom as well. There's more than one way to skin a cat and everyone has a different role to play. And who gives a damn if she lives and work in a predominantly white neighborhood? I'm not going to have millions of dollars and live next to your hating ass or people who think as you do.

Singing old negro spirituals in order to pass time and motivate ourselves while doin backbreaking work in a damn field all day is NOT the same as producing a song/album in a comfortable recording studio and selling it to buy Jet A fuel for a $40 mill bombardier jet...i live in LA and work in entertainment....these "hollywood" black folks are the fakest, phoniest goddamb bunch of people you will EVER meet....so unless u are in LA dealing wit these ppl one on one, u are not telling me anything about their MOTIVES!

same crowd singer Mya moved towards

  • Minx Mosaic

I work with them everyday myself. I know first hand their motives and tactics but that's not my point. You're speaking about something that means absolutely nothing to the little brown girls who go out into this world being teased, ridiculed and treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. So to have another song (by a light skinned artist) that's uplifting them and telling them to be proud of their skin perhaps could be life changing for them. Regardless of how you feel about Beyonce and rather you like it or not, these young girls look up to her. So for Sandra to pose a question of "Do black women need Beyonce telling them their beautiful?) is stupid and shows the crab in the barrel mentality. Living in a world where the media will actually post an article explaining why black woman are ugly, YOU DAMN RIGHT WE NEED ANY AND EVERYBODY SPEAKING, SINGING AND SHOUTING IT OUT TO THE WORLD TO THESE GIRLS THAT THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • Kylla Williams

saaaaay that....this girl been going on and on about her mixed roots her whole career now they are so pro black. jay even said his presence was charity. now they eating some humble pie.

  • Kylla Williams

true true true. she even has a bday spanish edition album. she said this around that time.

  • Kylla Williams

i wanna know if kelly made this song, would ppl be so positive and receptive? nope its only a big issue cuz its beyonce. just like jay and his socially conscience music on 444, he was praised butttt nas been doin it his whole career

  • Minx Mosaic

Also, I totally get where your frustration lies but we're speaking on two different points. I apologize for my offensive language towards you. I get caught up in being passionate about my point but that doesn't excuse my behavior. Hope you accept my apology and have a great night. ***You made some valid points*** I respect that.

  • Jessy

? She’s just reminding the crackers that think they can mimic us that they will never be us. And if you’ve ever spent a lot of time around wypipo you know all they do all day is try to act like their features, body types are some standard of beauty. No bish.

  • Simone
  • Music

Why is it always an issue? Artists don't support black people and there's a boycott. Attempt to support, and then there's complaints about being exploited. Ugh, Its exhausting! If this was a marriage, I'd file for divorce.

  • Raquelle Dellaghetto

Blond wig swinging chick said what???

  • EMILY POST

Rock by paying employees a Decent wage that work for their company.
Not defending Beyonce but after they dissed her daughter on air about her hair... on a so called black network she really doesn't owe BET or their programs anything. Prior to black girls rock being a public relations response to all of the heavy criticism they received for basically telling black girls they are not enough and for decades of less than positive imagery its almost like Satire because their imagery has been filled with anything but the sort.
If their programming would have rocked they would have zero need for the show but it's good for publicity. Kind of like VH1s Dear Momma Show... After they spend much of their programming time green lighting black women in a negative light. Just like their Love and Hip Hop Trash and all of the bad behavior and imagery. Not Impressive.

  • SemajBeyPhilly

Smh y’all don’t need men bringing y’all down. Women are doing a good of enough job tearing each other down. Never once heard Kelly was black & ugly. Second best yes but never ugly. That lady always been beautiful. Y’all sad bruh!

That would be dope if this was Kelly’s song!

  • Kylla Williams

i get what ur saying but to be honest the singer is the problem. she has embraced her creole background her whole career, she's done all but say she isn't black she is creole. has a song titled creole. thats MY issue about her getting this uplifting title. it didn't come from a genuine place. she juuuussst started speaking on black issues. and the fact that she wanted to write a love letter to africa, as she says, is soo comical cuz her joint tour with jay is the first time in forever performing there, if she has ever performed there. she is exploiting the culture for riches. she's appropriating the african culture.

  • Kylla Williams

    and brown skin

  • Pamela

    G.E.D. is so overrated. /s?

  • Renee Bee

    Lol.

  • Kylla Williams

but she's attended the bet awards after that diss to perform with kendrick lamar and collect the awards they just pass out to her. soooo the point is she doesn't support black events unless she is being awarded or its something her or her family created. u only see her supporting artist that she's working with. she is an opportunist and with every opportunity she grasps at she gets this pedalstool of doing something so wonderful when there are other artists that are genuine and get overlooked. i dont think the song is the issue i think its the creole girl who used to tell everyone who would listen that she is everything but black. this is a collective album she could have gotten kelly to sing this or at least collaborate.

  • Miss Thang

Because Beyoncé has spent her whole career upholding the idea that white features are better through her image and plastic surgeries.

  • Kylla Williams

right its multiple artist it would have been received better and seemed more genuine had it worked out that way.

She needs to keep us around so when yt folks stop listening to her music she can come back home. Look at Janet wants to appeal black folks now. Look at O.J. he used black people to get away from murder. • Look@m3

Hmmmm....maybe she grew up and matured. Idk....that's fd up tho if this was because of the culture like wtf....we have way more vibrant culture than any race so that's BS. I really hope someone educated her since then and she matured!

In Jay Zs Holy Grail...he is talking about Blue Ivy as the Holy Grail, the perfect child, similar to Jesus....in the video for Family Feud, Blue Ivy is an adult sitting at the head of the table of all world leaders who are all women...Beyonce has already presented herself as Isis and Jay is Jehovah...so we are being conditioned to accept Blue Ivy as a leader when she gets older. They are passing the torch with this song

You have proven to me that you are no Industry Guru.

That is great. One of the little girls in the video, Ava, who's mother is singing the song to her and along with her. Well the mother has said numerous times how horrid her mother was to her growing up. Her skin color was a problem for her mother because she was dark, and neither her mother or father were. Jay Z And Beyonce Are Inspired By Africa So Why Won’t They Perform There?

Article written by Africa columnist Lynsey Chutel:

    https://blackamericaweb.com/2018/06/28/jay-z-and-beyonce-are-inspired-by-africa-so-why-wont-they-perform-there/

Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s On The Run II tour draws inspiration from the classic Senegalese film of two young lovers on the run, Touki Bouki.

And as noted by Quartz Africa columnist Lynsey Chutel, it’s “hardly the first time the superstar couple have looked to Africa for their aesthetic. And yet, The Carters have never honored African fans with a live performance. ”Even Beyonce’ s 2016 visual album Lemonade drew heavily on an African aesthetic, from the voluminous, antebellum-styled dress in an intentionally ironic Ankara print to the collaboration in “Afromysterics” with Nigerian contemporary artist Laolu Senbanjo.

Somali-British poet Warsan Shire’s words were threaded through the visual album,“ Chutel writes in a piece titled: “Jay-Z and Beyoncé may be inspired by Africa, but they won’t perform here.”She adds: “For her 2017 Grammy Awards performance, Beyoncé called on the Yoruba goddess Oshun in her styling. Before that, for 2011’s “Run The World (Girls),” Beyoncé flew Pantsula dancers from Mozambique to teach her their moves, and featured them in the hit single’s video.”

“The On The Run II tour schedule lists no African cities. Neither did the first “On The Run” tour, nor Beyoncé’s solo shows “The Formation World. Tour” and “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.” For all their allusions to touring the world, the Formation tour went as far as western Europe, while the Mrs. Carter Show travelled to South America and Australia.”

“The last time Beyoncé performed in South Africa was part of a charity concert for late former president Nelson Mandela’s 46664 foundation in 2004—back when she was still a member of Destiny’s Child and just months after releasing her 2003

Its well documented Beyonce has ignored Africa for most of her career.

You only post when some one criticizes beyonce. You have been stanning for Beyonce for years attacking people for their comments.

You worship a woman who wears blond wigs, chopped of her black nose, bleached her skin, white washed her photos, worshipped other races over her own and has contributed nothing SIGNIFIGANT to very people who spend millions on her yearly.

By signifigant I dont mean food drives, and feel good PR stories and trips. I mean things like what La Bron has done, Rihanna has done, Akon has done,Beanie Man has done.

You dont seem to get it, you are blocked by most people which is why you never get replys.

I have just added you to my BLOCK list
so by the time you read this you will be BLOCKED. Please find something worth while to do with your life

  • Primo Levi

How can a person that wears tons of make up tell you ur beautiful when they can't embrace their natural beauty!

  • Rhyme and Reason

The reason Brown or Dark Skin Women may feel ignored or uncelebrated is because of the media!

The best way to celebrate an array of Black Women is to show the VERY BEAUTIFUL of all races or skin colors!

Whether it’s blondes, brunettes, redheads, or light skin black women, they are beat, air brushed, tweaked to OPTICAL PERFECTION!

Brown or darker hue women are often featured as something out if the wild, or as Iman says, “we’re seldom shown at our very best!” Victoria Secret and the fashion industry at large minimally feature us!

I used to do fashion shows, and for some reason, I always had some of the most gorgeous dark chocolate models, and they were the standouts, wearing red or tangerine, hot pink lipstick, white leather, lime green, brunt orange evening gowns, or yellow patent leather mini dresses, hair snatched, natural, wigged or weaved, BLACK GIRLS ROCK!

Present us like Becky is shown, Beyoncé or Rhianna, and they will dim bright lights or light up any space!

Brown Skin Girls aren’t basic, just under-represented. Look at 70’s, 80’s or 90’s Black Female s e x symbols, singing superstars or actresses! Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Pam Grier, Lola Falana (read her story), Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills, “Thelma” from Good times, Janet Jackson, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Lil Kim, SWV, MJB, XSCAPE, Brandy, Monica, among others, colored girls at the top!

We [the media, the entertainment industry, our beauty ideals] have DIGRESSED!

  • No Love Lost

If this doesn't apply to you, why respond. Also, what is there not to agree with Beyonce on when it comes to this beautiful inspiring song about loving your dark/brown skin?

  • SLEEZO

Lol, ruined a childhood classic. Could'nt get past Beyonce saying " Sumba" through the entire movie with that heavy accent. Beyonce and acting is no beueno, not even voice overs.

  • Coco

And little black girls being bullied for darkskinned, not just friends by also families could benefit from hearing the song.

Only Sandra and her “black” fans would find something negative about this.

  • Coco

Sandra’s fans are saying this isn’t true. We’ve always been uplifted in the community. Little black girls don’t need to hear this kind of positivity lol.

  • Coco

    Not when it’s from Beyoncé.

  • Coco

Kelly made a video called “my hair, my crown” but had a bunch white and mixed girls and the black girl had braids. She’s not the type to exclusively celebrate black girls.

  • Coco

Some of y’all are unnecessarily hateful. Whatever Beyoncé did to women on this blog must have been very serious.

  • Coco

It’s been 10 years, people grow, learn and change. Except people here I guess.

  • Cannelle

    What?!! She said that??

  • rayne215

nas has been celebrated his whole career as well

  • rayne215

you can praise both. beyonce has done alot of charity as well

  • rayne215

people forget that she was under her dads thumb for years and had to play a certain part. once she broke away from him,she was able to do her own thing.

  • rayne215

it was when she mentioned the latina community and dance and thought she couldnt move like them, it was around that shakira era.nothing skin color related etc

  • rayne215

no, she didnt. her comment centered around dance and her liking latin dance culture, circa that shakira era

  • rayne215

but shes creole.......and black. why is it not ok to embrace both. she has always mentioned both cause of her parents.

  • rayne215

2008? really? thats what you go to? people forget how she was under her matthew's thumb and did not have any freedom to do what she want.

  • Rhyme and Reason

People don’t understand how something can be carefully crafted, orchestrated, and still beneficial like rich people raising money and awareness for causes, and find out they were anything but benevolent!

It’s marketing, rebranding, pure and simple!

Good for those who were uplifted!

  • INDUSTRY GURU

Very well said, perfect, you have a beautiful mind.

My mother told me as a child, when I first started learning to read and had a vast hunger for knowledge.

" Dont just read the title, research the author before you digest the material"

Think about the word "INFLUENCERS" the buzz word in reference to social media today. There is definately an Information War constantly going on now more than ever.

  • Honeylove123

Well forgive me but the research phrase “consider the source” applies here. I can’t take Black (excuse me “Brown”) female empowerment from a chick who reps her creoleness every chance she gets and rocks a blonde weave. Clearly she doesn’t love thyself!

  • Elevated Soul

I held off of this but it's time for real to speak.....

Many Black women of a darker hue, feel uplifted by the words of Beyonce because many have been taught to vilify Black women/girls who were born with lighter skin,so hearing the upliftment coming from someone whom many of a darker hue, were taught to "resent" because of their lighter hue especially since she is a female, will make many with low self esteem feel validated.

No one should allow anything to lower your self esteem and this goes for all Black women/girls of ALL hues....

  • OvertheMississippi

    WE DON’T!!

  • Desi

That is unfortunate. For me, it was my mother. But she definitely reminded me that beauty is skin deep and it should come from the inside out. It boggles my mind that black women have to even make a song about brown skin being beautiful. Because it simply just is and everybody knows it.

  • Yardgirl

This country is run by racist white men that don't differentiate based on skin tone. All blacks are "less than" to them.
    *******************
Period!! WE are the one that discuss skin tone and make fun of our own. SMH

  • Munchosgirl

Okay and does not negate the fact that Beyonce has performed for Mandela in 2004 in Africa, she was in Africa for her own tour(The Beyonce Experience)in 2007, she and Jay was there performing for the Global Citizen Festival.

That same era and album had that song Creole on it. So yes. Was skin color related during that era.

So all my red bones get on the floor
And all my yellow bones get on the floor
And all my brown bones get on the floor
Then you mix it up and you call it Creole

That's 3-4 at most shows total Muncho over 20 years of making music and touring. The Beyonce Experience since you pointed that ONE tour out, had ONE show there. Uno. Out of 96 shows total.

    46 in North America
    31 in Europe
    13 in Asia
    5 in Australia
    1 in Africa
    96 in Total

  • Ebony Starr

And the fact that they don't know who India Arie is, speaks volumes!!!

  • Stan4NoOne

It's not that we needed her to acknowledge us, it's nice to have a song that shows appreciation for our beautiful brown skin. It's really just that simple. https://media1.giphy.com/media/944QdcLbeUd1e/giphy.gif

  • Desi

Exactly. This is coming from the same woman that "supposedly" got her own natural hair down her back, but STILL to this day would wear a braided lacefront or a blonde lacefront wig. They also don't think that people notice the "tweeks" they do to their faces. Now if Jill Scott waz singing Brown Skin Girls, that would be more relatable to me. We shouldn't even be making songs about brown skin cause everybody wants to be tan/brown. We waz treated like animals for it, but yet they'll literally bake themselves to death trying to be BROWN.

  • WhoKnew

Fro Zone (on my Samuel L. Jackson voice).

  • WhoKnew

She doesn't think what she says will ever come back. I will never forget the interview she did saying Jay was 8 years older than her. So if he's in his 50s how in the world are you claiming to still be in your 30s? It's impossible. Gabriel said they're the same age so if Gabby is 48 that makes Jay 56. She needs to quit lying. She looks every bit of 48 botox and plastic surgery be damned. That's why I don't ride for these people because all they do is lie ALL the time.

  • Brown & Proud

She had a sister named chocolate Thai ??? lol -brown suga babe

  • Lucy

We dont...Its just a song. Jill Scott. Solange, Bianca, Secrett..the list goes on. They all sang about black women being strong and beautiful. We have enough people trying to divide us...stop!

  • Kimocha

Beyonce IS very popular and has a lot of young impressionable fans who suck up everything she says and does... And due to the fact that racism against all ppl of color is at an all time high... And even colorism from the blk race against dark skinned ppl (females in particular)... I would say the message in the song is very much needed.

  • Rere

I don't think Beyonce is just now becoming "woke" I think she knows how to pick her battle's in this industry. She is a huge celebrity at this point & if she sleeps better at night knowing she helped smbdy else, then good for her?

exactly, a dark skinned woman that has been singing about the beauty of brown skin and the young girls that need to hear beyonce's song soooo bad doesn't know who she is. remember the grammys didn't show her accepting her award.

  • Kylla Williams

kinda the point that was being made. she says and does whats popular for the moment for her own benefit.

  • Kylla Williams

u missing the point, she is just now embracing her black. never celebrated her blackness before. thats the issue that many ppl have. to me its not genuine. prior to lemonade i can't think of a time she embraced her black roots. she not latina but she expressed her love for that culture. not just that why is it when darker artist make songs uplifting women of color they get no kind of credit.

  • Renee26

As I've gotten older my perception of the world has changed; maybe theirs has too. They don't ignore blk issues; they bailed people who were jailed for protesting in Ferguson out of jail...

  • Renee26

Did a whole album in Spanish... Nothing wrong with it

  • Renee26

    Are they going to Dubai?
    Sex trafficking??

  • Applebum

Beyonce is very calculated and a walking contradiction. She’s down with uplifting black women through songs while trying to to look less black as possible. She said “
I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils“ but had at least 3 nose jobs. And she’s the same one who made Farrah tan her skin because she wanted to remained the light skinned one in the group. Farrah is/was lighter than her.

There are people who will scream black is beautiful as long as they don’t have the phenotype of a black woman, they’re all for it then. Beyonce star power is not as big as it was so she’s trying to reel in more fans in. That’s why lately you see her trying to seem relatable and posting robotic “fashionable” pictures daily. The job of a celeb is to keep their remaining fans while reeling in more fans with each projects, songs, posts, etc.

I see through the B.S but if the song is giving black girls some self esteem then that’s great because black women are being attacked left and right, especially by black men. The agenda is real.

  • Coffee1st

I DO NOT care for Beyonce in the least. But i don't see what the uproar is about.
*hard sigh*..... what WON'T "Black" folk argue and bicker about.
This s**t has gotten old and tiresome.

  • Applebum

I just mentioned the same thing above.

  • samuel severino

You forgot to mention that she has also bleached her own skin several times. Go look at that video Happily Ever After with Case and you will see how much she bleached her skin, changed her nose and got butt implants.

  • samuel severino

Bro, you have Trump Derangement Syndrome for real. Level 9. No matter what the conversation is about you manage to bring up his name.

  • No Love Lost

And that's because of India's dark skin,..which Beyonce is bringing attention to with this inspiring song.

    Speaking of agendas~
"Black rag dolls with instructions to 'slam the toy against a wall' were pulled from three stores following complaints that they were racist and offensive'
The president of One Dollar Zone said roughly 1,000 dolls were pulled this week from its store in Bayonne and two others also in New Jersey
The dolls were made of black fabric with red, green, black and yellow hair"
In 2019, we gotta deal with This $#!& ??

  • Chhzz

Wow. I like this actually. To answer the titles question. Because I do not ever recall seeing so many brown skin girls before. Maybe she has given them an international platform. Something about it feels so good

Folks will just get mad about anything these days, I swear. It is so exhausting and could take away from the seriousness of some actual stuff that is pretty messed up. I swear next someone is going to post they farted and the people who queef are going to be furious and protesting in the streets because they feel like the post and comment was not inclusive to all forms of passed gas. And said person will be labeled as a queef hater and have to apologize publicly for any queefs that were offended or felt disrespected due to the insensitivity of the post. Yup, you heard it here 1st folks... The fart and the queef, so no one gets upset. ?

  • Rhyme and Reason

Absolutely from day one, I would believe. Especially during slavery, the brown paper bag measurement, inbreeding to keep family lineages light skinned, our own [black] problem with “colorism!”

But, since the 2000s, the millions of media impressions that we take in have not been diverse! The launch of major superstars (influencers) have been light, i.e, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj! ERASURE!

The media molds and shapes attitudes, marketers program and condition consumers using various media platforms!

It’s vital to see positive images of oneself, and why they don’t readily show whites (blacks, no problem) living in abject poverty, white Appalachia, poor rural towns, trailer parks (the projects)!

A Vogue, product ad or apparel model is chosen after looking over hundreds of models for the absolute best image to project! We’re not shown at our best, IMO!

    Sorry about the long post!

I agree one THOUSAND percent with this article!!! I remember Kelly Rowland did an article where she said Tina Knowles taught her how to love her brown skin and how she started to tan to get more “chocolatey” (her words) after Tina praised her skin. It’s like it took a light skinned woman to make her appreciate her beauty. I think she told her mother about it or something. How your own mama’s words/affirmation/love of your skin fall short to your homegirls mama?!?!

  • Harley

Why do bloggers feel the need to pit women of color against one another? Why do bloggers promote colorism for click and bait? Why don’t bloggers tell all women of color they are beautiful?

Funny how people wanna find something negative in an artist pushing an agenda to love ourselves. Funny how these “so called bloggers” like friction and dissention amongst people of color

  • Harley

It’s sad how people wanna find negativity in a positive movement. All these women now promoting stripping and being provocative yet people wanna find an issue with this

***My Family comes first**** BINGO! , major props for looking out for your grandmother - seniors in America have it hard. American culture doesnt honor and watch over seniors like we should.

Our Grandmothers have been through alot and carry alot of wisdom we can use in society today. We need it, our generation of today is lost in the wilderness. May God Bless you, and continue to watch over you and your family. I love your comment,...

Here is an affirmation by one of my favorife authors Florance Scoval Shinn "All that is mine by Divine Right is now released and reaches me in great avalanches of abundance, under grace in miraculous ways"...

Psalm 34:17-20 ....When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.

Right, so what’s the issue? Beyoncé just has a wider reach and therefore is more impactful than say a Fantasia. And James Brown still makes us feel proud today. And Beyoncé and before that with Destiny’s Child has been making songs & albums that make people feel proud for 20 years.

  • WutizstillHERE!

To answer this question.. No we don't need anyone to affirm our greatness strong black women already KNOW we are strong black women. We are however happy to see that others can now join in on our celebration of our melanin. It also can help (hopefully) bridge that great divide that has plagued women of color that is still very present which is the closer to white the closer to right you are.. If we all can begin to celebrate both our unified roots and at the SAME time celebrate together our unique beauty..that... THAAAAT would be worth celebrating and acknowledging

  • fRAktal Reality

As an immensely proud and unapologetically Black, dark-skinned (=original, non-recessive) woman, it is my opinion that SELF-validation trumps any 3rd party validation. Petty insecurities can't fester and thrive within the psyche of an individual who has achieved or is SELF-DIRECTED, SELF-CENTERED, SELF-GROUNDED, SELF-GOVERNED, SELF-CONFIDENT and SELF-SECURE. Such SELF-thinking potentials are amplified when the collective group is unified by a cohesive cultural and ethnic identity.

I am appreciative of systems my ancestors originated that emphasized the development of the INNER SELF (MIND/SPIRIT) so that the individual could create, produce value, problem solve and achieve his/her purpose.

Beauty is more than the exterior.

  • fRAktal Reality

"The reality is that colorism is alive and kicking and dark-skinned black women receive the brunt of it."

Colorism is a CASTE IDEOLOGY that stems from the criminal pathology of RACISM--the basis of WHITE HEGEMONY (often misnomered as WHITE SUPREMACY--which doesn't exist in nature). Such non-intelligence doesn't originate out of Africa. However, its autochthonous people, who are global are most adversely impacted by discriminatory, exclusionary and genocidal policies spurred by colorism and racism. Our genetics are penalized.

Well some of your readers do. And more importantly in this world we have enough hate coming towards black people as a whole. So If we have a platform to promote and uplift each other why not. Love always wins. Peace and Blessing my Black Sister.

    Are u happy about that?

  • Not Today

That's a dumb ass question. I know who I am and where I come from. The original comment I made was " mixed race", It was a stupid header. And for you to continue to have something to say about it makes me wonder ( not really, because I have better things to do) why you so worried about my comment. With that being said, I SAID WHAT I SAID. GOOD DAY TO YOU

  • ALLMINE?
