Police in Los Angeles say East Coast rapper Pop Smoke was “targeted” and murdered execution-style in a home he rented in the Hollywood Hills early Wednesday.

The LAPD reports the 911 call about Pop Smoke’s home invasion in California came from a caller in New York.

The LAPD says 4 gunmen barged into Pop Smoke’s rental house despite a deadbolt lock on the front door. The alarm had been disabled by someone inside the house. The gunmen apparently got his address from a gift bag he carelessly showed off in an Instagram video.

Rappers from Nicki Minaj to Drake said their RIPs in social media posts for the rapper they barely knew, but whose death reminds them, there is no loyalty among thieves.

But not everyone has sympathy for Pop Smoke or rappers like him who flash cash and material things on social media.

One Instagram user wrote:

“this was selfish & also rappers arent safe bc they arent humble hov been told them stop holding they money up (they still did it took it as an insult) … they flex all day & then want sympathy from us when the materials they just threw in our face have been stolen from them … its called accountability … you dont hear this stuff happening in other genre’s … anybody ever tried to hit a lick off dolly parton? no bc all dolly flex is a new wig or boots… rant over.”

Another IG user writes:

“Mac Miller never got shot at. There’s a lot of rappers that don’t wake up and go to sleep scared of being shot at or robbed. I wonder what the reason for this is.”

A third user wrote:

“Well instead of wasting money I’m jewelry and things that don’t matter why don’t you guys actually buy a house that is secluded pay for security do you guys think you’re untouchable could you rap about guns?”
