2 Live Crew founder Luther “Luke” Campbell was blindsided by his wife, Kristin Thompson, when she filed for divorce after 12 years of marriage.

Campbell, 59, is best known for his group’s raunchy, bass-heavy rap songs that glorified the strip club culture and helped to take twerking mainstream.

In a statement released to the media, a devastated Campbell explained he was caught off guard and totally surprised by his wife’s divorce action.

After twelve years of marriage, on July 17th, my wife decided to file for divorce. It’s mind-boggling, hurtful, and a total surprise,” he wrote. “I never intended to get married to get divorced. That’s not in my DNA nor my family’s history. I believe in the sacred vows, for better or worse, but I have to respect her decision.”

The father of seven children continued:

“Under no circumstances was there any infidelities nor verbal or physical abuse by me. I am now trying to make peace with her decision as best as I can. It will take time. The most important focus for me now is our son and being the best parent I can in this situation. Most of our family members know about this already, but now I am at the point where I feel an announcement is necessary to my friends.

“Please understand this is not a nasty split, so I would ask all who are aware, not to speak on our personal lives and respect our privacy by staying positive for our son’s sake. He is our top priority.”

Fans theorize that Campbell’s wife may be monitoring the bitter divorce drama between mega producer Andre “Dre” Young and his estranged wife, Nicole Young.

Thompson is the mother of Campbell’s seventh child, a boy.
