7 Superfoods for a Healthier Thanksgiving Dinner
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, families around the country will sit down to feast on a traditional Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and all the fixings.
Registered dietician Ellie Krieger has seven superfoods that can help you see better, increase your energy and make your skin look more youthful.
Krieger recently appeared on ‘Inside Edition‘ with Deborah Norville where she explained the benefits of eating healthy by including these 7 superfoods in your holiday meals.
Superfood #1: Kale
“Kale is great for your eyes because it has lutein that can help your eyes and prevent damage from aging.” Sauté it or throw it in a salad.
Superfood #2: Dried cherries
“Especially tart cherries. Interestingly, they contain melatonin which has been shown to help regulate sleep patterns.” They’re great as a snack or toss them in a salad, pancakes or muffins.
Superfood #3: Salmon which is loaded with omega-3 fats.
“Omega-3 fats reduces the inflammation in the body. So inflammation is thought to be at the root of many diseases, including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, even cancers. Fresh salmon costs about $20 per pound. You can get a can of salmon which will run you about $4 per pound and it has all the omega fats.”
‘The Strange Thing About the Johnsons’ (Video)

Yesterday, one of my loyal readers, EB, posted a link to a short film titled ‘The Strange Thing About the Johnsons’.
At first I wasn’t going to post the film because the subject matter is so disturbing that it might cause mental anguish in some of my readers. But after speaking with a friend last night, I decided to post this film and use it as a teachable moment.
Without giving away too much of the plot (for those of you who want to see it), let’s just say that this film can only be categorized as a “dark comedy” because it is laughable.
There is a good reason why we can only access 10% of our brain power. The brain has many defense mechanisms in place to protect itself (and you) from the type of activity that is depicted in this film.
The young man in this film would have to circumvent those defense mechanisms in his brain to be able to do what he does. And as a result, he would be psychologically disturbed. It would not be a secret to anyone around him that he was psychotic.
The scene where the young man appears to be a normal, healthy adult about to get married would never happen in real life.
This is the reason why men like Usher Raymond, who are stuck in the Oedipus complex phase, seek out older women for sexual gratification — because the alternative would be psychological harmful.
So as you watch this film, take it for what it is: a comedy that sprang from the overactive imagination of a man (the director) who has a limited understanding of how the brain works.
Medical Minute: Body Image Disturbance (BID)

The last post I wrote on Body Image Disturbance (BID) profiled a 23-year-old woman who died of complications related to her sixth breast augmentation surgery.
Despite the increased media focus on botched butt enhancement injections, many women continue to put their lives at risk.
Miami Gardens police have arrested a man (pictured above) who posed as a fake doctor to conduct unauthorized plastic surgery procedures on a woman who required hospitalization afterwards.
Cops say 30-year-old Oneal Ron Harris injected a substance consisting of cement, “fix-a-flat,” mineral oil, and “super glue,” into his victim as a butt enhancement and then sealed the incision with “super glue.”
The injections resulted in what police called a “serious medical condition,” requiring the victim to be hospitalized.
Miami Gardens Police say Morris also performed a similar procedure on himself. Source
Body Image Disturbance (BID), or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental illness that is on the rise in the black community. Celebrities such as Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian help to perpetuate the myth that bizarrely altering a woman’s body parts will bring them riches and fame.
Rather than improve a woman’s low perception of herself, the illegal butt injections often results in depression, serious illness or death.
Kelly Rowland Wears Sexy Milk Mustache in New Campaign
Singer Kelly Rowland recently posed for Britain’s version of the ‘Got Milk’ campaign to raise awareness about the healthy benefits of drinking milk.
The new posters featuring Kelly wearing the famous milk moustache on her upper lip will be splashed across buses in Britain, according to the Daily Mail.
“I really believe that looking after your body makes you feel good on the inside and happy on the outside,” said Rowland, 30.
“When I’m feeling fit, I also feel confident and comfortable in my own skin.”
Heavy D was on weight loss program when he died

According to published reports, rapper Heavy D was on a weight loss program when he died suddenly last week at the age of 44.
The rapper had begun a weight loss plan and kept a regular workout regime, according to EURweb.com.
Tony Wisniewski, the rapper’s trainer at the Ultra Body Fitness gym in Los Angeles, set Heavy up on a fitness plan three months before his death. Wisniewski is the same trainer that helped him lose 150 pounds back in 2008.
Autopsy reports show that Heavy D, real name Dwight Arrington Myers, weighed 344 pounds at the time of his death.
The autopsy was completed on Wednesday, but the coroner’s office declined to release a cause of death until they know the results of toxicology reports, which could take weeks.
According to Heavy D’s cousin, he had a “touch of pneumonia,” after returning from a trip to England a few days before he passed.
“We really do believe obesity makes people do worse with lung diseases,” said Dr. Benjamin Suratt, associate division chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital.
“If Heavy D died of a garden-variety pneumonia,” said Suratt, “it could be that he wasn’t able to fight it off due to his lungs not being able to fully expand and his immune system not having been fully functional.”
GUILTY! Judge Remands Murray to Jail Without Bond

Michael Jackson’s former physician, Conrad Murray, 58, has been found guilty of one count of manslaughter. The jury reached the verdict after 10 hours of deliberations which began on Friday, Nov. 4.
Murray faces a sentence of up to 4 years in prison. He could receive probation if Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor decides that Murray is a defendant with no prior criminal record, a circumstance that might mitigate in favor of probation.
Jackson died of cardiac and respiratory arrest following an acute Propofol (anesthesia) overdose on June 25, 2009 in his rented Holmby Hills, CA mansion.
UPDATE II:
La Toya Jackson screamed out in the quiet courtroom when the verdict was read. Court officers asked her to be silent.
UPDATE I:
Conrad Murray showed no emotion as the judge remanded him to jail immediately without bond.
