Is ‘Colombiana’ a Blaxploitation Film?
The much anticipated Sony Pictures action movie Colombiana opens in theaters everywhere today. Colombiana stars actress Zoe Saldana, 33, in the leading role as a beautiful trained assassin, who, as a child, witnessed the murder of her parents.
The trailer for Colombiana is a tour de force of revenge, retaliation and butt kicking action. I’m sure Colombiana will have the same empowering effect on your little girls as the films Foxy Brown and Cleopatra Jones had on my friends and me in the 70s.
Pam Grier starred in 1974′s Foxy Brown, as a gorgeous, big breasted, vigilante killing machine. And at 6 ft 1 in, Tamara Dobson was every black girl’s heroine in 1973 as Cleopatra Jones.
Unlike Colombiana, who has an arsenal of high powered weapons at her disposal, Cleopatra Jones and Foxy Brown used their hands and feet to karate chop their attackers (mostly men) down to size.
As much as black girls were inspired and empowered by the sight of these powerful black women kicking butt on the big screen in the 70s, the NAACP informed us we were being exploited.
Celeb Style: Sandra Bullock wearing Adeler and Le Vian Jewelry
One of our favorite actresses, Sandra Bullock, attended ‘The Change Up’ Premiere at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, California yesterday. Her wrist was elegantly adorned in fine Adeler and Le Vian Jewelry. Adeler jewelers have been making custom jewelry for the stars since 1975. Celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton, who routinely wear their pieces on the red carpet.

Terrence J Leaving 106 & Park

Terrence J has announced he’s leaving BET’s 106 & Park — but only for a month. The popular music countdown show host is taking a hiatus from 106 & Park to work on an upcoming film.
Terrence J, real name Terrence Jenkins, saw his stock rise sharply with the ladies following his acting gig on BET’s “The Game” this past Winter. Terrence’s smooth ladies man role on “The Game” earned him more offers of work, including a starring role in the upcoming film, Think Like A Man.
The movie, which is based on the best selling book written by Steve Harvey, host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, is about a group of women who uses Steve’s book to figure their men out.
Think Like a Man‘s all-star cast includes Gabrielle Union, Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good, Kevin Hart, LaLa Vazquez-Anthony, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, and Morris Chestnut.
Terrence J explained his role to writer Insanul Ahmed for Complex magazine:
“I play Michael. Michael is a mama’s boy. All of those guys I mentioned, we’re all best friends. We end up discovering that they know about the book and then we use the book against them. So it’s a really hilarious romantic comedy. The way it uses the book with Steve Harvey is really interesting and creative. It’s going to be a great date movie.”
Rihanna featured in Battleship Trailer

The trailer for the sci-fi action flick Battleship has hit the Internets, featuring singer Rihanna in her first acting role. First of all, you only see a fleeting glimpse of Rihanna wearing her battle fatigues after the 1:10 mark (if you blink, you miss her); and secondly, Battleship is clearly targeted to the hormone-driven, online gaming crowd under the age of 16.
There’s nothing to see here.
Roger Friedman: ‘The Help’ is Astonishingly Good
The new Disney/Touchstone Pictures movie ‘The Help’ was screened in Atlanta a few weeks ago. The movie, which hits theaters August 10th, is getting rave reviews for its talented cast who handle the movie’s sensitive subject with poise and grace.
‘The Help,’ adapted from the book of the same name, is about an author who writes a book from the perspective of Black maids in the deep South.
“Get ready for ‘The Help’ to hit the box office like a tornado,” writes Roger Friedman of ShowBiz411.
Celebs Out & ABout: Dwyane Wade, Gabriel Union, Rihanna
Friends Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade were pictured at the ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ Premiere in Times Square in NYC yesterday. After walking the red carpet, the two went their separate ways. It’s good to see ex-lovers remain friends, isn’t it?

R&B singer Rihanna gripped her butt cheek during her performance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles yesterday. My spies tell me that the real reason singer Cee-Lo dropped out of the LOUD tour is because he thinks he’s a bigger star than Rihanna is, and he resented opening for her. Speaking of Rihanna, she is tapped to host the Grand Opening of the new Vision, now called Reign. The occasion is also owner Alex Gidewon’s 40th birthday party.
