According to published reports, President Barack Obama was rushed to a military hospital near Washington D.C. on Saturday after complaining of a sore throat. Doctors there diagnosed Obama with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) caused by acid reflux.

Comedian Joan Rivers also suffered from acid reflux (GERD). She was undergoing an endoscopy (a test to diagnose GERD acid reflux) when she died tragically in a Manhattan clinic on Sept. 4 at age 81.

Joan Rivers was pronounced dead at 1:17 p.m. Thursday at a NY hospital. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, made the announcement just moments ago.

Rivers, 81, stopped breathing while undergoing a routine outpatient endoscopy procedure at a NY clinic on August 28. The clinic is now under investigation by NY state health officials. Rivers reportedly experienced laryngospasm (tightening of the larynx) which cut off oxygen to her brain during the outpatient procedure. Doctors don't know how long her brain was deprived of oxygen.

Rivers suffered respiratory and cardiac arrest during a routine outpatient endoscopy procedure last week. Rivers, 81, was reportedly undergoing a non-surgical endoscopic procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy clinic when she experienced respiratory and cardiac arrest as a result of a lack of oxygen to her brain.

Comedian Joan Rivers was rushed to a NY area hospital where she is listed in stable condition after she stopped breathing while undergoing a routine endoscopic procedure at an outpatient clinic. An endoscope is a small, flexible tube with a camera and a light at the end of it. The endoscope is passed down a patient's throat by doctors who look for abnormalities (tumors, ulcers, etc.) in the patient's esophagus or the stomach.
