The military’s efforts to regulate unkempt Afrocentric hairstyles is drawing flack from natural hair enthusiasts.
The Army’s new regulations ban twists, cornrows and dreadlocks or dreads. The Army prepared a poster illustrated with photos of the banned hairstyles in an amendment to Army Regulation 670-1. The new rules go into effect on Monday.
TV One’s Roland Martin (“News One Now”) joined a panel of black female current and former soldiers to debate the Army’s ban on Afrocentric hairstyles.

The 33-year-old “Girl On Fire” singer showed off her edgy modern mohawk hairstyle. The mother of one was stylishly clad in an asymmetrical black and brown leather biker jacket over a black turtleneck top, paired with black jeans, and black Isabel Marant wedge sneakers.

Beyonce’s sister Solange Knowles, 27, was seen arriving at the “Noon By Noor” show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014 in New York City earlier today. Solange’s wind blown natural afro evoked memories of Bozo the Clown, a popular TV character who entertained children in the 1960s and ’70s. Solange sashayed down the block wearing a smart looking skirt set and white shoes.

Vanessa VanDyke, 12, faces expulsion from her Central Florida school if she doesn’t cut, or at least groom her puffy afro hairstyle, WKMG Local 6 reports.
Vanessa, who is a talented violinist, said school officials gave her an ultimatum: either cut her unruly afro or be expelled from Faith Christian Academy in Orlando, where she has been a student since the third grade.
