The gunman who executed 2 Virginia journalists has died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at a north Virginia hospital.

Vester Lee Flanagan II, of Roanoke, Virginia was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m. Wednesday.

Flanagan, 41, shot himself after losing control of his car during a police chase on I-66 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Flanagan shot and killed WDBJ-TV reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, during a live broadcast at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The WDBJ-TV journalists were conducting a live interview at Bridgewater Plaza when Flanagan approached and opened fire.

UPDATE: The suspect who shot and killed 2 Virginia reporters has apparently taken his own life shot himself following a high speed police chase on I-66 in Fauquier County, Virginia, MSNBC reports.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Vester Lee Flanagan II, is in critical condition at a hospital after shooting himself at the end of a police chase along I-66.

Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, were shot and killed while interviewing Vicki Gardner from the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. Gardner was shot in the back. She is expected to survive her injuries. At least 15 shots were fired.

There have been wildly conflicting reports that the gunman was dead. He is in fact alive and in critical condition, MSNBC reports.

A Virginia television news reporter and her cameraman were shot and killed in a hail of gunfire during a live report early this morning.

Alison Parker, 24, and Adam Ward, 27, were interviewing a woman during a live report at 6:45 a.m. for WDBJ-TV in Virginia when a gunman dressed in black approached and opened fire.

UPDATE 1: The Washington Post identified the shooter as a disgruntled former employee of WDBJ-TV. Virginia police are in active pursuit of the gunman on I-64 in Virginia.

Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe said the suspect who has been identified is believed to be a disgruntled employee of the TV station. Federal law enforcement officials are searching for the gunman.

McAuliffe also said that authorities had ruled out an act of terrorism and described the shooting as a “criminal case.” He said police have a photo of the individual and are “in pursuit as we speak.”

UPDATE, 11:15 a.m.: The August County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Vester Lee Flanagan, 41, of Roanoke, VA.
