Meriam Ibrahim blessed by Pope Francis

If it weren't for her tremendous courage, bravery, and the compassion of Christians all over the world, Meriam Ibrahim would not be alive today.

Sentenced to death in Sudan for refusing to recant her Christian faith, Meriam, her husband and their 2 children, toddler Martin and infant Maya who was born in prison, arrived in Italy on Thursday.

An Italian diplomat who accompanied the family from Sudan said Italy relied on its historic ties within the Horn of Africa region to negotiate Ibrahim's release.

Sudanese woman freed

Sudanese Christian Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, who was sentenced to death for refusing to renounce her faith, was freed on June 23.

Ibrahim and her children -- 2-year-old Martin and a daughter who was born in captivity last month -- were secreted away to a safe house after their release. Her life was still in danger: her own family member had threatened to kill her if the government didn't.
