Dwyane Wade says going public with his son Zion Wade's struggles with a gender disorder helped his own self-awareness. "I'm growing into the man that I've always dreamed of becoming."

Wade, 38, opened up about Zion's gender confusion in an interview with openly lesbian television host Ellen Degeneres, 62, on Tuesday.

Wade said 12-year-old Zion identifies as a girl named Zaya, who prefers using feminine pronouns.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Thursday, the retired NBA player defended going public with such a personal family issue.

"We're not the only family that's had to deal with gender expression, gender identity, sexuality, with their child," he said.

Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, 47, were heavily criticized for exploiting their son's struggle with gender confusion and sexuality at such a tender age.

Union reportedly sought advice from the gender-bending cast of the hit TV series Pose, rather than a licensed therapist.

Wade claims his critics are simply "uneducated" and he suggested that God gave him the platform to exploit his emotionally troubled child for publicity for his upcoming Netflix documentary.

"We understand the position we've been put in," Wade told ET, "especially in our community, and even though it's not always a popular thing to speak out on issues that people are uncomfortable with or not as educated on, but this is the platform that God gave me and my family. So, we use it."

Wade said Zion's gender confusion has helped him grow into the man he should be.

"I've learned to keep my mind open, keep my eyes open, keep my heart open, keep my thoughts open. That's what I've been trying to do as I'm growing into the man that I've always dreamed of becoming," Wade said.

For years, Wade has been plagued by rumors that he is a bisexual man trapped in the closet. Black Twitter seems to think Wade is ready to come out and join his son.

Dwyane Wade's ex-wife is apparently not on board with his new "woke" agenda. Dr. Siohvaughn Funches still refers to her youngest child, Zion Wade, as her son.

Wade and his wife, troubled actress Gabrielle Union, 47, delighted in telling the world that 12-year-old Zion is now a "Zaya", a "transgender" girl.

But Funches apparently did not get the memo. While she hasn't spoken out publicly about her emotionally troubled child, insiders say she still refers to Zion as her son.

Sources say the deeply religious Funches, who divorced Wade when Zion was a toddler, refers to the boy as Zion, not Zaya, as he prefers to be called nowadays.

She also uses male pronouns for Zion and his older brother, Zaire Wade, 18.

Zaire, a standout basketball player at L.A.'s Sierra Canyon Day School, is very supportive of Zion. He penned a heartfelt note to his little brother, whom he calls his best friend.

Man, I remember bugging my mom as a kid telling her I wanted a brother so bad. I was the only child looking for company and someone to look after and take care of," he wrote on Instagram. "I have been blessed to have my best friend, Zaya with me for 12 years. We did everything together...we fought, we played, we laughed and we cried. But the one thing we never did was leave each other behind..."

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union sought advice from the cast of hit FX television series POSE when Wade's 12-year-old son, Zion, told them he wanted to be known as "Zaya" and use feminine pronouns.

During a guest appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, that will air on Tuesday, Wade said his son, "came home and said, 'Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I'm ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as 'she' and 'her'. I'd love for you guys to call me Zaya'.

The retired NBA player told Ellen DeGeneres that his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, 47, turned to the cast of POSE for advice on dealing with a child who suffers from a gender disorder.

"That was our job to go out and get information, to reach out to every [LGBT+] relationship we have," Wade said. "My wife reached out to everybody on the cast of Pose. We just tried to figure out as much information as we (could) to make sure we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self."

POSE, about New York City's Black and Latino LGBT+ and gender-nonconforming ballroom culture scene in the 1980s, is a cast of cross-dressing and non-binary actors.

Wade insisted neither he or his wife ever questioned Zaya's decision to come out, adding: "Once Zion came home and said, 'Call me Zaya,' and was ready to take on this, I looked at her and said, 'You are a leader. It's our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.'

"Right now it's through us, because she's 12 years old, but eventually it will be through her."

Wade, 38, shares 16-month-old daughter Kaavia James Union Wade with Union. He also has a son, Zaire, 16, with his first wife Siovaughn Funches; and a love child, Xavier, 6, with a fan, Aja Metoyer, 36.

Gabrielle Union shared a normal photo of her stepson Zion Wade, 12, on her social media account over the weekend.

Union, 47, posted a series of photos that show her, Zion, and her toddler daughter, Kaavia, posing next to a backyard tree decorated in Christmas lights. She captioned the images, "Family Time Is The Best Time."

In the Christmas photos, Zion appears to be a normal 12-year-old boy. The new images are in contrast to the provocative Thanksgiving photo she shared on Instagram.com that showed Zion wearing a crop top, leggings and acrylic nail tips.

His appearance, which was clearly inappropriate for a minor child, sparked a massive backlash against Union and her husband, retired NBA star Dwyane Wade, on social media.

Many called Wade an unfit father. Critics said the issue was not Zion's assumed sexual identity. They accused Wade and Union of exploiting an emotionally troubled child for their own selfish benefits.

The criticism must have struck a nerve with Wade because the 37-year-old sports analyst hit back, telling concerned social media users to kindly mind their own business.

Union posted the controversial photo after she was fired from NBC's America's Got Talent. She later accused the show's founder, Simon Cowell, of sexism, and she accused guest judge Jay Leno of racism.

After a 5-hour meeting with NBC and lawyers representing Cowell's Syco last week, Union deemed the meeting "productive".

She allegedly said Cowell's staff claimed her hair and clothes were "too black" for the show's audience.

Dwyane Wade's eldest son, Zaire Wade defended his little brother Zion Wade after the effeminate boy was criticized for wearing fake nails in a Thanksgiving photo.

The controversy erupted on Thanksgiving Day when Wade's wife, actress Gabrielle Union, 47, posted a Thanksgiving family photo on Instagram.

In the photo, Zion, 12, dresses seductively in a crop top and leggings. He also wears sharp acrylic talons and lipstick.

Zion, then-11, came out during Miami's Pride parade in April. Union proudly rode on a float with him during the parade.

Wade, 37, responded to critics by telling them to kindly mind their own business and he will raise his son as he sees fit.

In defense of his brother, Zaire, 17, posted an Instagram photo that shows him sitting on a throne while his brother stands next to the chair.

The caption reads: "We didn't ask for y'all opinion."

Wade and Union showed their support for Zaire's post in the comment section, with Union commenting "Facts."

Dwyane Wade fired back at concerned Internet users who questioned his parenting skills when his wife, actress Gabrielle Union posted an Instagram photo of Wade's 12-year-old son, Zion Wade, wearing a crop top, leggings and sharp acrylic nail tips.

Mothers everywhere were shocked and saddened by the boy's sexually suggestive attire. They criticized Wade on social media. But the retired 37-year-old NBA player asked them to kindly mind their own business while he raised Zion as he saw fit.

Gossipmongers wondered aloud if Wade's ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches - who was SO outspoken during their bitter divorce - had something to say about Wade and Union exploiting her son to advance their careers.

Siohvaughn, a 38-year-old author who first dated Wade in high school, has not said a word publicly - probably because she's under a very restrictive non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

According to MTOnews.com, Siohvaughn is making some explosive allegations against the NBA baller.

In throwback videos, that were coincidentally re-uploaded to YouTube on Dec. 2nd, Siohvaughn claims that she suffered physical and mental abuse at the hands of her ex-husband.

"I saw him sell his soul. I saw him taking his character and exchanging it for yet another endorsement," she told Successful Ladies Live in a series of interviews.

She also said Wade beat her while she was pregnant with Zion. Siohvaughn, who said she was mentally abuse by Wade, may have transferred that negative energy to her unborn baby. The boy was born into a dysfunctional home filled with violence and hate.

Siohvaughn told Successful Ladies Live:

"I woke up in the middle of the night. I was sick - obviously because of the pregnancy. And I noticed that [Dwyane] wasn't in the house. And so I was calling him because it was like 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, and we went to bed together...

"He finally got back several hours later. I was very upset... [Dwyane] started cursing and calling me names. Telling me 'Shut the F up', 'Women talk too much' and 'You should know your place'.

"Then it turned to physical violence. He picked me up, and threw me down. He threw me down so hard, that when my back hit the ottoman it broke into pieces. And my head and back hit the marble floor.

"After that I immediately got up and went to the phone, and went to call the police. He snatched the phone out of my hand and slammed it into my body, so hard the phone broke into pieces."

She said she begged him not to enter the NBA draft because she knew the money and instant fame would break her family apart.

Siohvaughn also says Wade cheated on her constantly after he signed his NBA contract. She must have felt vindicated when Wade's 3rd son, Xavier, was born to a California woman six years ago - while he was dating Gabrielle Union, 47.

Watching Siohvaughn speak so openly about the abuse she allegedly endured - all while struggling to keep her family together in 2007 - will touch the hearts of women who can relate to Siohvaughn's emotional story.

Stiletto nails are all the rage among celebrities, such as Beyonce, Rihanna, and Cardi B (pictured below). But the tips are considered dangerous due to their sharp pointy tips.

Stiletto nails are hard acrylic nails painted with layers of polish and often decorated with tiny art or rhinestones.

Wade's fans praised him on social media for allowing the boy to live in his truth. They said 12 is not too young for the child to express his sexuality at an age when he should be playing sports.

Zion is Wade's son with ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. Wade's oldest son with Funches, 17-year-old Zaire Wade, is a top ranked high school basketball star.

Union, 47, was let go as a judge on NBC's America's Got Talent last week. She has since opened up about being fired from the show.

"When the world feels like it's falling apart. Try to find your peace," she captioned a video clip.

In a tweet, Wade, 37, said he was proud of Union for "standing up for what she stands for" and practicing what she preaches to their daughter Kaavia.

"As proud as i were of her being selected as a judge on #AGT— I am even more proud of her standing up for what she stands for and that’s US. So [cheers] to you @itsgabrielleu on not losing sight of the lessons we've talked about teaching our daughter and for kicking ass while you were on that platform. Number 1 judge on one of the biggest shows in the world."

Gabrielle Union responded to the debate over her husband Dwyane Wade's social media post in which he expressed love for his "girls" - including his son, Zion Wade.

In the post, Zion poses with his stepmom, Gabby, and his half sister, Kaavia James, 1. Zion wears a pink scrunchie on his wrist.

Zion, who is only 12, came out of the closet during a Pride parade in Miami earlier this year. Since then, both Wade, 37, and Union, 46, have used Zion to promote themselves as LGBT allies.

So it was no surprise that Union responded to the controversy on social media.

"Looks like love to me," she wrote in a post featuring the original image. "I truly hope that everyone gets the love, support and hugs they deserve."

But social media users fear that Union's role in pushing the agenda is more than simply supporting and loving their sons. Many say little Zion didn't exhibit feminine tendencies until Union entered the picture.

Women fear that something more insidious is underfoot.

On Instagram.com, one user reposted the GQ magazine cover featuring an effeminate Pharrell Williams. The cover was for "The New Masculinity Issue".

This was a question for Democratic presidential candidates at the recent CNN presidential town hall on LGBTQ issues, held last Thursday, Oct. 10, at The Novo theater in Los Angeles.

With all the problems facing LGBT Americans, this question was at the top of their list. Why? Who takes puberty blocker medications?

Johnny Louis/WENN.com

Democrats are eager to lower the price of puberty blockers to get them into the hands of as many Black boys as possible. Boys like Zion Wade, who will soon be old enough to take puberty blockers without his dad's permission (age 16).
