Gossip tabloid TMZ.com reported incorrectly that Bruce Jenner's Cadillac Escalade did not cause a chain reaction 4-car pileup that killed a female motorist last weekend.
According to witnesses, Jenner's Escalade rear ended a white Lexus driven by Kim Howe, 69, forcing her car into oncoming traffic where she collided head on with a Hummer. Jenner's momentum sent him crashing into the back of a black Prius.
TMZ originally reported that the Lexus hit the Prius and Jenner hit the Lexus. Witnesses say Jenner was texting at the time of the accident -- a charge that Jenner denies. Police were reportedly subpoenaing Jenner's cell phone records.
Paparazzi photos show Jenner apparently smoking a funny looking cigarette just seconds prior to the crash.
Now comes word that preliminary police investigation determined that Jenner was the cause of the crash and he may be charged with vehicular homicide.
Jenner, who is taking female hormones at age 65, is said to be "depressed" at the prospect of spending the rest of his life in a men's prison.
“Grief doesn’t even touch it,” an insider told In Touch magazine. “He is devastated, and in so much fear that he can barely talk. He knows there is a very real chance that he could go to jail.”
A sergeant at the LA County Sherriff’s Department tells ‘In Touch’ the accident is being investigated, and if the evidence suggests Bruce was at fault, he could be charged.
California-based criminal defense attorney adds that vehicular manslaughter is determined by driving patterns — so if Bruce’s unsafe choices contributed to the death of his 65-year-old neighbor, he may be found guilty.
Law enforcement sources tell the site it’s believed Bruce was unaware of the traffic in front of him and stopped short, causing the collision.
