Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was arrested in Alabama on drug possession charges.
Gillum, 46, was arrested by police in the town of Daphne, Alabama, on July 2. He was booked into the Baldwin County Jail in Bay Minette, and released the same day.
Police Chief Brian Gulsby said Gillum was pulled over around 10:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 98 for driving erratically. Police searched the car after they saw a glass pipe on the center console.
Police found eight baggies containing meth, 8 marijuana cigarettes, several “blunts,” a bong, three glass pipes and four cut straws, according to TMZ.
Gillum was the first Black Democratic nominee for governor in Florida’s history. He lost the general election to Republican Ron DeSantis in 2018.
Two years later, Gillum and another man were found naked and under the influence in a room at the Mondrian Hotel on South Beach. A friend discovered the two men in an altered state of consciousness. He called 911 to report a possible overdose.
Police released body cam footage and images that showed Gillum naked and lying on the floor in a bathroom. The video showed several prescription pill bottles inside the room. Cops also removed three small bags of methamphetamines.
Police did not arrest the 2 men because there was no evidence linking them to the drugs found in the hotel room.
Gillum came out as bisexual in an exclusive interview with Tamron Hall in 2020. Gillum’s wife, R. Jai Gillum, provided emotional support for her husband during the interview. They share three minor children.
