WNBA star Brittney Griner filed for divorce from attorney Cherelle Griner in Atlanta.
In court documents, obtained by TMZ, Griner said the marriage is “irretrievably broken.”
Court documents stated they separated on July 24, weeks after they celebrated Cherelle’s 33rd birthday in a photo dump on Instagram.
The couple married in 2019, and they share a 2-year-old son delivered via a surrogate in 2024. Griner, 35, is asking the court for an equitable division of marital property and for child custody and child support to be resolved by the court.
Griner’s attorney, Randall Kessler, issued a brief statement Friday afternoon.
“This is a matter we hope the parties can resolve privately. There is no further comment at this time,” he said in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Griner was briefly married to former WNBA player Glory Johnson, 36, after allegedly cheating on Cherelle, her college sweetheart.
Despite a domestic violence incident that landed both Griner and Johnson in jail, they were married in May 2015.
On June 4, 2015, Johnson announced she was pregnant and would miss the 2015 WNBA season. One day later, Griner filed for annulment which was rejected by a judge.
Johnson gave birth to twin girls in October 2015. Griner was eventually ordered to pay child support to Johnson. Their divorce was finalized in June 2016.
Griner was the No. 1 overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft. She played 11 years for the Mercury.
She was arrested at a Russian airport for drug smuggling and jailed in February 2022.
U.S. officials agreed to a prisoner swap with Russia, and Griner was released from a Russian prison on December 8, 2022.
