Congress is threatening a DOJ investigation into the WNBA after multiple attacks against Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

In an unprecedented move on July 7, eleven members of Congress wrote a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert demanding answers about the physical attacks against Clark.

The letter threatened a Department of Justice investigation into the ongoing heterophobic attacks on Clark by opposing players.

House Rep. August Pfluger, a Republican from Texas, tweeted on Wednesday:

“I led my colleagues in demanding accountability from @WNBA Commissioner Engelbert after MULTIPLE attacks against Caitlin Clark, a player who is transforming women’s sports and inspiring a new generation of young girls to participate in athletics.”

He continued: “I’m putting the league on notice that if it keeps letting the violent targeting slide, they could find themselves facing a DOJ and EEOC crackdown for violating federal civil rights law.”

“These incidents go far beyond routine physical play.”

The letter from the Republican Study Committee reads:

“Clark has been hip-checked, poked in the eye, and struck in the throat during games. These incidents go far beyond routine physical play, yet the WNBA and its officiating have too often failed to address these unacceptable incidents and hold players accountable.”

Congress gave Engelbert until July 24 to reply to the letter.

“We request answers to the following questions by July 24, 2026.

1. What is your review mechanism for physical hostility and violence on the court?
2. How will you hold players accountable for overly aggressive actions on the court, including towards Caitlin Clark?
3. What steps are you taking to protect WNBA players from online harassment and off the court threats?”

Clark, 24, is currently on the team’s injured list after she was hit in the throat by the Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas during a June 24 game.

In response to a massive public uproar after the game, the league reviewed video of the incident. Thomas, 34, received a flagrant 2 foul and she was suspended for one game.

The June 24 incident was the latest in a series of ongoing heterophobic attacks against Clark since she was drafted No. 1 overall by the Indiana Fever in 2024.
