Howard University automatically unenrolled hundreds of students for unpaid tuition before the start of the Fall semester.
Howard University notified over 500 students that they were unenrolled.
The private HBCU school in Washington, DC “blindsided” the students by unenrolling them because they missed their July 10 tuition payment deadline, ABC 7 reported.
The student is responsible for making sure his/her tuition is paid before the semester begins.
Financial aid (student loan) is available from the federal government. Additionally, financial aid is provided by grants from banks, colleges, and public and private trusts.
Financial aid is based on data submitted to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Freshmen students took to social media after being kicked out of school. The Fall semester begins on August 17.
Isabella Williams panicked when she was informed by Howard that she was unenrolled. She had her truck packed for the long drive from her home in Alabama on Thursday. Isabella was set to begin her internship with the school’s football team next week, Page Six reported.
“They stated that there was no way for us to come back, and that they suggested that we come back for another semester as a transfer student,” Isabella told ABC 7 News.
“I had two scholarships from Howard University. I had an $11,000 scholarship and a $16,000 scholarship that was directly from them. And then I had originally it was $13,000 that I had to pay off, but it was actually $12,000 because they let you waive your health insurance,” Isabella explained.
“Never in my life have I been so disappointed,” she said in a tearful video on her Instagram page. “Never in my life have I gotten so far and worked so hard for it to be stripped from me on a random Wednesday.”
Isabella captioned her post: “I’m supposed to move in on SATURDAY. Howard University was unenrolled 100s of students. Financial aid TOLD ME that my external scholarships would suffice. Please, hold them accountable @amen.hong @scholarshipcollegemama @howard1867 @wxtxfox54 @wrblnews3 #howarduniversity.”
