NYPD officers rescued a depressed woman who climbed a suspension cable on the Brooklyn Bridge and threatened to jump. The incident happened on Wednesday, July 8.
Witnesses say the woman climbed the suspension cable above the East-bound lane of the bridge. She sat down near a structure that prevents people from climbing higher on the cable.
The bridge was closed to East-bound traffic, causing many commuters to turn their cars around.
NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers responded quickly to the crisis and attempted to talk the woman down. A police bodycam captured the scene as an officer tried to talk her down.
Nearly an hour later, the woman stood up and leaned forward.
An officer grabbed her around the waist and said, “Don’t do it! Don’t do it, please… I got you! Everything’s gonna be OK. You’re not in trouble.”
The woman was handcuffed and transported to a hospital for evaluation.
